SUMMARY:The Cherry Orchard
DESCRIPTION:Considered one of the great plays of the modern era\, Anton Chekhov’s final play about a family on the edge of ruin is radically reimagined by acclaimed director and dramatist Simon Stone\, who returns to the Armory following his blistering Obie-Award winning take on Federico García Lorca’s Yerma (2018). His refreshing adaptation resets the action from Russia to a rapidly transforming modern-day Seoul\, South Korea\, where the original noble siblings are now corporate heirs struggling to adapt to a world that has moved on without them\, suffocated by a rising middle class and wealthy self-made entrepreneurs. Caught between the past and the present\, hope and despair\, tradition and innovation\, the chaebol family is forced to grapple with the inevitable forces of change. \nJeon Do-yeon is well-known for her roles in You Are My Sunshine (2005) and Secret Sunshine (2007)\, for which she was awarded Best Actress at the 60th Cannes Film Festival and making her the first Korean actor to receive such recognition. The talented actress stars alongside Emmy-nominated actor Park Hae-soo of worldwide Squid Game fame as well as a stellar all-Korean ensemble cast in spontaneous\, immediate performances. Equal parts tragedy and comedy\, the story unfolds on a masterfully designed set by celebrated architectural designer Saul Kim that features a modern\, transparent glass house allowing audiences a voyeuristic peek into the characters’ private lives. An intimate\, bittersweet portrait that is deeply South Korean and yet universally moving\, this must-see reinterpretation is a timely reflection of loss\, change\, and social transformation. \nTickets start at $45 (including fees) \n🎟️ Special Offer for KCCNY followers!\n✨ Save 10% on tickets for all performances\n🎫 Use promo code: CHERRYKCCNY\n⏰ Offer valid through 11:59 PM (ET) on August 21\, 2026. Standard ticketing fees apply. \n🗣️ Performed in Korean with English captions. \nPhoto credit: Studio AL\, LG Arts Center

SUMMARY:MOCA PERFORMS – Three Lives
DESCRIPTION:THREE LIVES is an autobiographical solo show that follows Alex Xander Luu and his family’s escape from war-torn Saigon in 1975 to America. Journeying across continents and generations\, “Three Lives” presents the Vietnam War story through the eyes and experiences of its oft-forgotten casualty – – its refugees – – his father\, grandfather\, and Luu himself as their lives are violently uprooted and resettled in the “promised land.” With equal doses of laughter and heartbreak\, Three Lives combines humor\, kinetic physical movement\, and raw storytelling that peels back the layers of the standard Hollywood narrative of the Vietnam War and instead gives a front and center portrait of the equally comical and painful effects of assimilation\, the loss & reclaiming of identity\, and the strength of the human spirit. Coming on the heels of 2025’s 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War\, Three Lives frames the personal immigrant narrative and its timeless themes against the universal backdrop of today’s fraught political climate. \nTime: 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM each day

SUMMARY:Yuen Woo-ping Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:In a Hong Kong film industry overflowing with martial arts talent\, Yuen Woo-ping stands apart. His legendary influence\, in a career spanning more than five decades\, has earned him the widely celebrated\, industry-bestowed moniker “天下第一武指\,” which translates as “The Number One Martial Arts Director Under the Sky.” As both film director and action choreographer\, Yuen helped elevate martial arts cinema into a sophisticated art form\, blending technical precision with character\, poetry\, and astonishing physical invention. His choreography prioritizes movement legibility\, spatial clarity\, and expressive geometry over brute force\, reshaping the visual grammar of global action filmmaking. \nBorn into a family of Peking Opera performers\, Yuen grew up in a tradition where drama\, martial arts\, acrobatics\, and dance were inseparable—a heritage linking him to contemporaries like Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung\, who emerged from the same rigorous training. Yuen’s father\, Yuen Siu-tien\, an accomplished opera performer\, actor\, and martial arts director\, introduced his children to the film set. The Yuen siblings began as stunt performers and rose through the ranks. Together they formed the Yuen Clan\, becoming some of Hong Kong cinema’s most respected stunt performers and action directors. \nYuen’s first two films as a director\, Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow and Drunken Master (both 1978)\, launched Chan’s stardom. By shifting martial arts cinema away from solemn violence to wit\, personality\, and comedic invention\, the films established a template for Chan’s career. Yuen went on to collaborate with icons like Hung\, Jet Li\, Michelle Yeoh\, and Donnie Yen\, while consistently demonstrating an unparalleled ability to train performers of all backgrounds—including Hollywood stars like Keanu Reeves and Uma Thurman—in his intensive “fight camps.” \nYuen’s work on The Matrix (1999)\, which seamlessly integrates Hong Kong wirework—human-controlled harnesses and cables that propel and suspend performers—with science fiction\, fundamentally altered how Hollywood approaches action. With Crouching Tiger\, Hidden Dragon (2000) he showed that martial arts could deepen a film’s emotional and intellectual resonance as much as its spectacle. Yuen’s extraordinary adaptability made him the definitive collaborator for visually distinct auteurs as diverse as Stephen Chow\, Ang Lee\, Quentin Tarantino\, Tsui Hark\, the Wachowskis\, and Wong Kar Wai. Decades after his debut\, Yuen’s latest epic\, Blades of the Guardians (2026)\, proves his vision still dictates the rhythm of modern action cinema. \n\n\n\n\n\nIron Monkey (少年黃飛鴻之鐵馬騮).1993. SUMMARY:Best by 07/21/2026
DESCRIPTION:A residency-then-exhibition Artists: Clare Hu\, Tianyi Sun\, and Shaan Ken Rao \n398 West Street\, New York\, NY 10014 Residency: July 21 – September 16\, 2026 Exhibition: September 17 – October 17\, 2026 Opening Reception with the artists: Thursday\, September 17\, 2026 | 6-8 PM \nEli Klein Gallery is pleased to present Best by 07/21/2026\, a residency-then-exhibition featuring artists Clare Hu\, Tianyi Sun\, and Shaan Ken Rao\, opening on its own expiration date. Following At-Will Adaptation (2024)\, the gallery’s residency program returns this year for its second installment\, running from July 21st and culminating in a three-artist exhibition on Thursday\, September 17th. The three artists\, working in various mediums such as sculpture\, weaving\, painting\, and photography\, will create entirely new bodies of work using Eli Klein Gallery as their studio. The gallery will be open to the public during normal business hours throughout the duration of the residency. \n“Can the concept of the human survive discovering how the “sausage” of us is actually made\, what we really look and smell like at the cellular level?” This question\, raised by the writer and scholar Sophie Lewis in her catalog essay “New Wombs for Old Men” of the New Museum’s inaugural exhibition “New Humans\,” challenges the default practice of separating the maker from their associated defecations during the formation of a public-facing identity. On a metaphorical and non-visceral level\, contemporary art’s birth-giving process today resembles an ectogenesis\, with the “sausage-making” process susceptible to both curated previews and packaged commercialization. An artist’s studio is only alive when it breathes and excretes\, and more so when the discarded substances are studied\, categorized\, archived\, and recycled.

SUMMARY:Tchah Sup Kim: The Key to a New World
DESCRIPTION:Tchah Sup Kim (1940–2022) was an artist whose lifelong practice explored fundamental questions of civilization\, the universe\, existence\, and humanity. Moving beyond formal experimentation\, his work sought new ways of seeing and understanding the world—often by challenging established boundaries between East and West\, the individual and the cosmos\, and the finite and the infinite. \nKim moved to New York in 1974 and studied printmaking at Pratt Institute\, where he began developing a distinctive visual language. His landmark etching Triangle Between Infinites (1976)\, now in the collection of The Museum of Modern Art\, New York\, introduced the triangle as a central motif in his practice. Rather than treating it as a closed geometric form\, Kim opened its vertex\, transforming the triangle into a structure of openness\, circulation\, and connection. \nThroughout the 1980s\, his work reflected his experiences of migration\, otherness\, and diasporic identity in New York. After returning to Korea in 1990\, his inquiry expanded toward broader questions of civilization\, history\, and the origins of humanity. \nNew York played a pivotal role in this artistic and intellectual journey. It was here that Kim encountered the center of Western modernism while also beginning to question its prevailing systems of thought. Presented now in New York\, The Key to a New World revisits that formative relationship and considers his practice through a contemporary lens. The exhibition title comes from a phrase found in one of Kim’s own notes. For him\, a “new world” was not simply a vision of the future\, but the possibility of thinking and seeing beyond existing frameworks. \n\nTuesday – Friday: 10 AM – 6 PM / Saturday: 11 AM – 5 PM\nClosed on Sunday and Monday.\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nAbout the Artist \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTchah Sup Kim received his BFA from Seoul National University in 1963. With a grant from John D. Rockefeller 3rd Fund Fellowship\, he completed his MFA at the Pratt Institute in New York in 1976. \nWorking primarily in paint and mixed media\, Kim explores the principles of cosmos through nature and its phenomena. He raises questions regarding the universal truth that human beings have sought in and out of history. His artistic journey can be divided into three major periods: from 1965 to 1982\, during his early years in Korea and New York\, his work is characterized by a focus on geometry; from 1983 to 1993\, during his New York period\, he turns toward geopolitical and historical themes; and from 1993 to 2022\, after leaving New York for the rural village of Naepyung-ri in Korea\, and later alternating between the two locations\, he focuses his work on geography and nature. \nTchah Sup Kim’s artwork is currently housed in the collections of many renowned institutions\, including the Museum of Modern Art (NY)\, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY)\, and the National Museum of Contemporary Art (Gwacheon\, Korea).

SUMMARY:Afterlayers: Tai Hwa Goh & Julia Kwon
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception: Thursday\, September 17\, 2026\, 5-7pm \nTwo artists transform traditional materials–textile and paper–to explore themes of identity and memory. Tai Hwa Goh creates intricate\, layered installations from printed and cut paper\, inspired by organic forms\, landscapes\, and the relationship between the interior and exterior. Goh’s process pushes the limits of traditional printmaking\, as she modifies the characteristics of paper and thin fabric by covering with batik or ironing thin sheets of beeswax onto her prints\, deliberately obscuring the underlying images. She then uses techniques like sewing\, gluing\, and manipulating printed materials to construct intricate\, honeycomb-like structures. Found objects seamlessly integrate into the work\, reflecting the blending of the personal and the universal\, as well as natural and artificial elements.Through this process\, the imagery gradually moves away from recognizable forms\, and the dense layers serve as a space where nature\, memory\, and personal experience intertwine. Her installations invite viewers to contemplate the balance between the natural world and human existence\, and how everyday moments can reveal deeper insights into our lives. \nJulia Kwon sews interpretive Korean textiles\, specifically in the form of patchwork bojagi (Korean object-wrapping cloth)\, to critique received notions of Asiatic femininity and challenge reductive\, easily legible identities. Although her bojagi textiles may initially be perceived as traditionally Korean\, the patchwork designs are actually derived from urgent contemporary sociopolitical issues and events. Her work moves beyond simply representing minority identities as she aims to comment on the interconnected systems of oppression. Kwon’s practice contests the notion of authenticity and explores the complexities involved in constructing identities within the current framework of cultural hybridity\, intersectionality\, and the collective pursuit of social justice \nThe Korea Society Gallery is open only by appointment.\nThe appointment must be made at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled visit. \nGallery Hours: Monday-Friday 10 AM-4:30 PM\nBy Appointment Only

SUMMARY:Zine* Together
DESCRIPTION:Please join Asia Art Archive in America on Thursday\, September 17th from 5-8pm for the opening reception of their exhibition\, Zine﹡ Together. \nZine﹡ Together is the first exhibition of its kind to examine Asian American zines not only as objects\, but as actions—creative\, collective\, and relational. Drawing from Asia Art Archive in America’s Reading Room collection\, this exhibition highlights collaboratively produced zines from 2010 to the present\, alongside newly commissioned projects and prompts that trace zine-making as a mode of shared authorship and community building. \nIn the 1960s and 1970s\, zines (short for “magazines” or “fan-zines”) were characterized by their photo-copied\, staple-bound formats and emerged as popular do-it-yourself platforms for sharing counter-cultural socio-political programs and avant-garde art practice. In more recent decades and particularly in Asian American communities\, zines have served as a place to explore artistic narratives\, diasporic histories\, and collective responses to marginalization. \nKey to this exhibition is a commissioned research project and essay by Michelle Yee\, PhD\, and Elizabeth Chung that investigates the recent history of Asian American zines in relation to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic and the parallel rise in anti-Asian violence across the United States. Situating zine-making within this moment of crisis\, the research frames the medium as one of many grassroots strategies for care\, documentation\, and solidarity. Together\, the exhibition and research project position zines not as peripheral ephemera\, but as vital cultural tools that register and record how communities respond in times of uncertainty. \nZine﹡ Together\, itself a collaborative project\, is organized by Claire Kim\, Susanna Chang\, Sarula Bao\, Michelle Yee\, Elizabeth Chung\, Mary Y. Yang\, Chen Luo\, and Tasnima Tanzim.

SUMMARY:Book Talk | Sunset at Lion Rock by Matthew Wong Foreman
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE BOOK \n\n\n\nNobody in Eric’s family talks about why photos of his Uncle Mikey are on every table\, in every room. Years of silence\, together with a relentless Buddhist upbringing\, has Eric convinced he is Mikey’s reincarnation. But when a summer in the mountain temples of Lion Rock Hill results in a crisis of faith\, Eric is confused by his feelings of betrayal. His growing understanding of his place in Hong Kong society and the circumstances surrounding his uncle’s disappearance compels him to question all that he has come to believe is true. And just like his uncle before him\, Eric finds himself forced to choose between his family and himself. \nSUNSET AT LION ROCK is a letter from a nephew to his uncle who died before he was born. It serves as a window into parts of a Eurasian child’s life which his family can never know\, documenting his attempt to navigate racial confusion\, religious trauma\, the meaning of friendship\, and the struggle for self-discovery in a shifting culture on the eve of the 1997 handover of Hong Kong to the People’s Republic of China (PRO). \n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nMatthew Wong Foreman is a Hong Kong-born writer. He read history and philosophy in Hong Kong and Oxford before completing a PhD in History at Northwestern University in the United States\, where he taught history and writing. A monograph entitled To Mix or Not to Mix: The Making of the Chinese Race\, 1895-1949\, is forthcoming in 2027 (Brill\, Leiden). SUMMARY:New York Premiere of Award-Winning Drama Mulan
DESCRIPTION:Use code DANCE30 for 30% off\nChina Arts and Entertainment Group (CAEG) presents the New York debut of the award-winning dance drama MULAN produced and performed by China Ningbo Performance & Arts Group\, with four performances only from September 18-20\, 2026 at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts\, 20 Lincoln Center Plaza\, NYC. Performances: Fri & Sat at 7:30pm\, Sat at 1:30pm\, Sun at 2:30pm. Tickets start at $30 and can be purchased online https://www.davidhkochtheater.com/tickets-and-events/mulan. \nWinner of the China Dance Lotus Award\, the highest honor in Chinese dance\, MULAN is a sweeping\, visually resplendent dance drama that reimagines one of China’s most enduring legends for global audiences. In that legend shaped by filial piety\, bravery\, and the yearning for peace\, a young Chinese heroine disguises herself as a man to take her father’s place on the battlefield — and rises to eternal renown. Beyond depicting a warrior’s journey\, it unfolds a profound narrative of self-identity\, inner growth\, and human compassion — the story of a woman who stands firm for her family\, her homeland\, and her true self. \nCreated by award-winning choreographers Zhou Liya and Han Zhen\, the production masterfully merges classical Chinese dance\, martial arts\, and epic theatrical aesthetics into a powerful movement language. Where traditional retellings focus solely on Mulan’s heroism\, this interpretation reveals her grace\, vulnerability\, and unwavering longing for peace. \nCentral to the production is a monumental 15-meter revolving stage\, which acts as a quiet yet expressive presence: heightening the intensity of battle scenes\, framing intimate emotional moments\, and symbolizing the cycle of life\, war\, and remembrance. Complemented by exquisitely crafted period costumes and atmospheric lighting\, the design elevates an ancient legend into an immersive contemporary theatrical experience — where East meets West\, tradition meets innovation\, and history comes vividly to life. Evocative original music weaves traditional Chinese folk instruments with dramatic symphonic orchestration. Transcending linguistic and cultural boundaries\, it resonates with universal values: loyalty\, sacrifice\, self-discovery\, and the eternal pursuit of peace.\nA flagship production of CAEG’s Image China initiative\, MULAN makes its New York debut at the David H. Koch Theater this fall. Majestic and unmissable\, MULAN is far more than a dance drama — it is a timeless human story crafted for the world stage. \nCreative Team\nChief Directors / Choreographers: Zhou Liya\, Han Zhen\nPlaywright: Zhu Hai\nComposition: Du Ming\nExecutive Directors: Li Chao\, Lv Zimin\nSet Design: Tan Ze’en\nLighting Design: Han Jiang\nCostume Design: Wang Yukuan\nMake-up Design: Jia Lei\nChoreographers: Han Zhen\, Zhou Liya\, Lv Zimin\, Li Chao\, Liu Wei \nLeading Roles (Casting Subject to Change)\nMulan: Tang Xinyi\nGeneral Wei: Xia Tian\, Wang Zheng\nRou’er: Wu Wei\nMulan’s Father: Wang Zheng\, Jiang An\nLittle Mulan: Liu Siyu\nEunuch: Du Boyan \nArtist Bios\nZhou Liya (Chief Director / Choreographer)\nA graduate of the Choreography Department at Beijing Dance Academy\, Zhou Liya is a resident choreographer and stage director with the China Oriental Song and Dance Troupe.
