SUMMARY:Cover Collage & Memory Mixtape Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Co-sponsored by the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU. \nREGISTER \nInspired by COVERS BY MP3\, this playful\, hands-on workshop invites participants to create a mini CD keychain with a shareable memory playlist\, paired with a self-designed album cover. \nCOVERS BY MP3 is a multimedia community arts project that documents stories from the Korean diaspora through music\, memory\, and recreated album covers featuring participants in place of the original artists. \nIn this workshop\, participants will build a playlist of the music that has shaped their lives and collage an album cover inspired by the memories it evokes. Their design will then be transformed into a mini CD keychain that links to the playlist\, allowing their personal soundtrack to be shared at the tap of a phone. \nThis program is made possible in part with public funds from the Queens Arts Fund\, a re-grant program supported by New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and administered by New York Foundation for the Arts. \nIt is also made possible through the generous support of the Queens Public Library. \n  \nAccessibility note: This venue is accessible to wheelchair users. Hokkaido\, the northern island of Japan\, was previously called Ainumosir\, or land of the Ainu. After many years of persecution and erasure dating back to the Meiji era\, the Ainu population is down to less than 20\,000 people in Hokkaido\, and Ainu traditions and language are in danger of being lost.  This film\, through the stories of elders\, documents dedicated grass roots efforts to revive and keep Ainu culture alive. \nBorn in Hyogo Prefecture in Japan and having moved to NYC in 2004\, Emmy winner Naomi Mizoguchi has been working in the film and television industries for over 30 years.  She has directed over 100 film projects and has edited over 400 projects.  As a filmmaker her personal work has focused on cultural and humanistic storytelling.  Please visit ainuhito.com for more information about the filmmaker and her journey. \nPlease RSVP to george.hirose@gmail.com by 6/28 with “RSVP Ainu Film” in the subject line. \nSave the Date! \nIn recent years Naomi’s interest in telling the story of Ainu peoples has become a mission that has expanded to bringing worldwide awareness and recognition of Ainu culture and historical traditions.  She has been working extensively with the town of Biratori in Hokkaido\, where many Ainu still live\, to bring performers\, artisans\, and culinary experts to New York for a series of exciting programs at Japan Society this July and August.  Details to be announced soon at japansociety.org!

SUMMARY:Solidarity As Medicine: Asian & Black Communities Healing Together
DESCRIPTION:Community conversation about working with\, not against\, cultural difference.\n\n\n\nIn a time of rising harm\, division\, and distress\, BEAM and the Asian Mental Health Collective are coming together to hold space for a long-overdue talk: cross-cultural solidarity centered in healing justice. \nThis community conversation invites us to move beyond individual and racially siloed healing into the practice of collective care that transcends\, but still authentically honors\, ethnicity. We will acknowledge and draw from the powerful history of Black\, Asian\, and Indigenous folk (alongside other communities of color and allies) coming together across difference\, address the very real divisions being weaponized against us\, and explore what it looks like to continue to build sustainable ecosystems of care together. \nThis session is for those wanting to close the racial chasms and for anyone who believes that our liberation is interconnected. If you are ready to deepen relationships across cultures\, join us. \nAbout the Guest Speaker \nAyesha Meer (she/her) With over a decade of experience in nonprofit and public management\, Ayesha has grown Asian Mental Health Collective into the leading organization addressing mental health in Asian communities. Ayesha’s own journey to find mental health support\, as an Indian South African immigrant to the US\, led her to join Asian Mental Health Collective as Executive Director in 2023 and to work to create a mental health system that is by and for pan-Asian communities in the US. \nPrior to joining AMHC Ayesha served as Executive Director for Artemis House—a domestic and sexual violence shelter and response organization in Western South Dakota. Ayesha has a particular interest in ending shame around capitalist ideas of productivity. SUMMARY:JEST ASIANS - Asian comedy night by Humor Section (Lab Edition) 亚裔脱口秀
DESCRIPTION:An intimate Asian comedy night in NYC by Humor Section\n\n\n\n\nJEST ASIANS: Lab Edition is the small-room\, experimental sister show of JEST ASIANS — All-Pro Asian Comedy Showcase\, first co-presented by Humor Section and Asia Society New York. \nWhile the Asia Society edition brought a polished lineup of top Asian comedians to one of NYC’s leading cultural institutions\, the Lab Edition creates a more intimate and playful space at PARTEA LAB — a room for fresh jokes\, new ideas\, and close-up audience energy. But “experimental” does not mean random: every show is still carefully curated\, featuring comedians with strong voices\, real credits\, and material worth developing. \n\n\nThe show is produced by Humor Section\, a comedy brand founded in Beijing in 2013 and now based in New York. As one of the early forces in China’s stand-up comedy scene\, Humor Section helped build a platform for a new generation of comedians\, and now continues its mission in the U.S.: advancing Asian comedians on the global stage. \n\n\n\n\n\nLineup to be updated: \nTony Chou (Host & Producer) \nTony Chou is one of the very few native Chinese comedians touring the world performing stand-up in English. Based in New York\, he has performed across the U.S.\, China\, the U.K.\, Australia\, and Southeast Asia. He is the co-founder of The Humor Section\, a comedy platform launched in Beijing by Des Bishop in 2013\, and previously co-hosted the hit late-night show The Vicious Liang Huan Show. His work has been featured by major media including the BBC\, CNN\, The Atlantic and more. \n  \nPast JEST ASIANS — All-Pro Asian Comedy Showcase at Asia Society New York

SUMMARY:New York Asian Film Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:This year’s program features more than 50 filmmakers\, ranging from acclaimed veterans to exciting new voices\, who will be on hand for post-screening Q&As and special appearances\, giving audiences an insider’s look into the stories behind their work. \nTickets will go on sale on Thursday\, June 18 at 2pm\, with an early access period for FLC and NYAFF Members starting on Thursday\, June 18 at noon. \nComplete lineup to be announced soon! Sign up for updates. \nTwenty-five years ago\, the New York Asian Film Festival started by screening the most exciting new films from Hong Kong\, Korea\, and Japan. A quarter century on\, Film at Lincoln Center (FLC) and the New York Asian Film Foundation announce the first highlights of the 25th New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF)\, a landmark anniversary edition celebrating 25 years of championing the filmmakers\, stars\, and cinematic movements that have shaped the future of Asian cinema. Running from July 10 to July 26 across five New York venues\, including Film at Lincoln Center\, SVA Theatre\, IFC Center\, Anthology Film Archives\, and the Korean Cultural Center New York\, NYAFF 2026 marks a major milestone for North America’s leading festival of Asian cinema. Screenings at FLC take place July 10–23\, and two venues are homecomings: Anthology Film Archives (where the festival began in 2002) on July 16–18\, and IFC Center (the festival’s home for four formative editions) on July 13\, 15\, 16\, and 22. \n“We are proud to support the 25th edition of the New York Asian Film Festival\, and uplift the stories of Asian communities in NYC and beyond\,” said Commissioner Rafael Espinal of the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment. “Festivals like NYAFF are an extremely vital part of the city’s filmmaking and entertainment ecosystem\, and create platforms and opportunities to expose New Yorkers to new and diverse storytelling.” \nOpening Night on July 10 at FLC will feature the North American premiere of Yeon Sang-ho’s Colony\, the highly anticipated Korean box-office sensation fresh from its world premiere in Cannes’ Midnight Screenings program—the same section that launched Train to Busan 10 years ago. Already the fastest Korean hit of the year\, the film locks its survivors inside a central Seoul high-rise while a virus tears through the floors quicker than anyone can say “zombie.” Jun Ji-hyun (Gianna Jun) plays the biotech professor who turns reluctant hero\, alongside Ji Chang-wook\, Koo Kyo-hwan\, and Shin Hyun-been. Yeon Sang-ho will be in person on Opening Night ahead of the film’s August 28 theatrical release. \nColony arrives after Korean cinema’s strongest box-office rebound since the pandemic. NYAFF is planning a special presentation of the year’s other biggest hit: The King’s Warden\, now the highest-grossing Korean film of all time\, starring Yoo Hae-jin (Exhuma) and Park Ji-hoon. One film broke the all-time record. The other got to the top faster than anything else this year. Both are at the 25th edition of NYAFF. \nFollowing Colony’s premiere on July 10\, the Opening Night Market returns to the Frieda and Roy Furman Gallery at Film at Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater for an annual gathering of the NYAFF community with live music and Asian street food. \nThe festival is presented with major support from the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York (HKETONY)\, The Ministry of Culture of Thailand and the Department of Cultural Promotion\, Fundstrat Global Advisors\, BitMine\, Cathay Pacific\, Taipei Cultural Center of TECO in New York\, Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY)\, and Korean Film Council (KOFIC) whose partnership amplifies Asian cinema’s most vital voices. \nLearn more here.

The Chinatown Night Market team returns June 26 & July 10 to Forsyth Plaza\, this year as Chinatown Nights*. Expect musical performances\, folk artisans\, Asian American artists\, Chinatown shops\, food\, and great neighborhood vibes. \nSee you there. \n*Chinatown Nights is a throw back to how it all started in 2021 as a pandemic response to gather community outdoors and to give local Chinatown artisans and shops an opportunity to vend. Since then this summer festival has grown and evolved into the Chinatown Night Market and now will transition back to Chinatown Nights centering arts and culture.

SUMMARY:Transcendence
DESCRIPTION:Fou Gallery is pleased to present Transcendence\, a group exhibition featuring Tianshu Zhang (张天舒)\, Tao Xian(陶显)\, and Gloria Fan Duan(樊段晓春)\, on view from July 11 through September 5\, 2026. \nAs in the philosophy of the I-Ching [易经]\, the world is not an empty abstraction\, but a living structure of patterns through which all things transform. At a moment when attention is increasingly pulled outward by speed\, image\, and instability\, Transcendence turns inward\, inviting viewers to explore within for the subtle flow of energy that connects body\, mind\, and the natural world. \nBringing together painting and sculpture\, the exhibition considers abstraction not as a rejection of form\, but as a way of approaching what cannot be fully represented: spirit\, dream\, memory\, and the quiet forces that shape both human and natural existence. Through bodies\, imagined organisms\, and reconstructed botanical forms\, Transcendence explores the traces of inner energy moving between consciousness and the unconscious\, creating a path for viewers to enter a realm of inner light\, meditation\, and spiritual perception. \nFor Tianshu Zhang\, painting emerges from the threshold between dream and embodiment. Drawing inspiration from the imperceptible yet constant flow of Qi\, her paintings seek a balance between silhouette-like structures and fluid movement. Through layered brushwork\, Zhang evokes the body in abstraction\, where flesh\, spine\, and inner currents appear only partially\, as if sensing the presence of energy moving within. The body becomes a vessel through which consciousness moves between memory\, desire\, vulnerability\, and transformation. \nTao Xian approaches this spiritual interiority through the imagined life of nature. Drawing from Daoist thought\, Jungian psychology\, and organic forms\, she creates luminous semi-abstract paintings that occupy a space between organism and inner landscape. In works inspired by deep-sea plants and imagined botanical forms\, Tao allows imagination to become a mode of perception\, suggesting a silent energy shared between the individual soul and the larger universe. The visible traces of nature become vessels for psychic and spiritual life\, where the boundary between self and world remains fluid. \nGloria Fan Duan extends the exhibition’s inquiry into nature\, perception\, and unseen forces through a practice situated at the intersection of art\, science\, and technology. Conceived during NARS Foundation (Brooklyn\, New York)\, An And Foundation (Wassaic\, New York) and Fou Gallery’s Tulum Residency (Mexico)\, the series presented in this exhibition combines cast resin and glass flowers\, leaves\, and stems with handmade vessels\, assembling them into sculptural installations inspired by Japanese ikebana. Through mediation\, preservation\, and deliberate arrangement\, Duan reconstructs nature in translucent botanical forms that hover between specimen and offering\, garden and laboratory\, occupying a threshold between existence and non-existence. No longer living plants yet still carrying the trace of organic life\, these works offer a material counterpart to Zhang’s bodily energies and Tao’s imagined spiritual organisms. The processes of preservation\, reproduction\, and arrangement become forms of meditation\, suggesting that the artificial may also serve as a vessel for care\, ecological memory\, and spiritual attention. \nThrough the body\, the imagined organism\, and the reconstructed garden\, form becomes a threshold through which inner energy\, memory\, and spiritual perception may appear. Rather than presenting transcendence as escape\, the exhibition understands it as a process of attunement\, a way of sensing what exists beneath the visible. Installed as a quiet and immersive environment\, Transcendence invites viewers to move through the works as they might move through a breath cycle\, a dream\, or a moment of meditation\, entering a space where the visible world opens onto its unseen dimensions. In this suspended space\, transcendence becomes a quiet practice of returning to the energies that bind the self to the world.

SUMMARY:Film: Lingua Franca
DESCRIPTION:Asia Society presents “Desire & Solitude: The Cinema of Isabel Sandoval”\, featuring Sandoval’s latest film alongside two that inspired it and her three previous features.  \nLingua Franca \nIsabel Sandoval\, Philippines/USA\, 2026\, 95 min.   \nIn English\, Russian and Tagalog with English subtitles. \nFollowed by a Q&A with Isabel Sandoval moderated by film critic Genevieve Yue.  \nIn her only feature to date made in the USA\, Sandoval stars as Olivia\, an undocumented trans Filipina woman living in Brooklyn and working as a caregiver. SUMMARY:Film: Moonglow
DESCRIPTION:Asia Society presents “Desire & Solitude: The Cinema of Isabel Sandoval”\, featuring Sandoval’s latest film alongside two that inspired it and her three previous features.  \nPreceded by the short film Shangri-La (2021). \nMoonglow \nIsabel Sandoval\, Philippines/Taiwan/Japan/USA\, 2026\, 107 min.    \nIn English and Tagalog with English subtitles. \nFollowed by a Q&A with Isabel Sandoval moderated by film critic and programmer David Schwartz. \nSandoval’s latest feature is a sterling representation of the dramatic themes and tendencies that have animated her work until now. The filmmaker stars in a noirish moral tale set in 1979 Manila. She plays Dahlia\, a corrupt police chief’s right-hand woman; her decision to betray him\, in an attempt to help victims of his wrongdoing\, has deadly consequences. With luxurious colors\, camerawork and period design— Sandoval cites Melville and Ophuls as inspiration and will introduce screenings of their films as part of this series— Moonglow marks a milestone in a major filmography. \nA limited amount of complimentary tickets will be available to NYC college students with ID at the box office on the day of the screening.
