SUMMARY:Geopolitics\, Identity\, and the Fight for Civil Rights
DESCRIPTION:The third webinar in this series examines the downstream effects of U.S. foreign policy through both a historical and contemporary lens. Drawing parallels across time\, the conversation will explore how periods of international strain have influenced domestic policies and legal interpretations—from immigration restrictions to citizenship rights—and how these dynamics continue to evolve today. \nThe session will explore how narratives of rivalry and suspicion can translate into real-world consequences for communities with heritage ties to countries at the center of geopolitical tension. We will discuss the tradeoffs policymakers face and provide a nuanced understanding of how national priorities intersect with civil liberties.

SUMMARY:Unpacking AANHPI Grief: Demystifying and Making Space for Grief and Loss
DESCRIPTION:Grief is the natural response to loss of all kinds\, but we are rarely given space in our everyday lives to acknowledge it. As human beings with intersectional identities living in a grief-illiterate society\, how do we make space for grief\, individually and in community? \nIn this interactive talk with Chinese-American grief coach and author Charlene Lam\, we will debunk myths about grief\, and address cultural taboos about talking about grief\, death and dying. Together\, we will name what we’ve been carrying and create opportunities to engage with grief through personal reflection and community witnessing. \nAll participatory elements are optional. We will have time for Q&A and open discussion. A pop-up installation by The Grief Gallery will be on display. Attendees are invited to bring an object that represents who or what you’re grieving – for instance\, a memento of a person\, pet\, place\, identity\, or anything else you’re mourning – to add to the collective display. \n \nAbout Charlene: Charlene Lam is a certified grief coach\, speaker\, and the author of Curating Grief: A Creative Guide to Choosing What to Keep After a Loved One Dies. \nAfter her mother died suddenly in 2013\, she started presenting exhibitions with her mother’s belongings\, which became the foundation for her Curating Grief® framework. As curator of The Grief Gallery®\, she presents international exhibitions featuring the belongings of loved ones lost\, including installations in Los Angeles\, Toronto\, and London. \nHer TEDx talk\, “What Grief and Soy Sauce Taught Me About Life After Loss\,” has been viewed more than 20\,000 times. \nA proud Chinese-American New Yorker like her late mother\, Charlene is based in Lisbon\, Portugal. She works with clients worldwide (and really wants you to ask her about the soy sauce in her mother’s kitchen.)

SUMMARY:AAWW & The Strand Present: Isabel J. Kim + Jinwoo Chong
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a release event with award-winning short fiction writer Isabel J. Kim\, discussing her debut book SUBLIMATION.\n\n\nHeralded as “one of the best debuts of the year” by SFF legend John Scalzi\, this thrilling novel imagines a world where crossing a border splits you into two lives\, and characters must confront what they owe to their other selves. \nModerating this discussion is award winning author Jinwoo Chong. This event will be hosted in the Strand Book Store’s 3rd floor Rare Book Room at 828 Broadway on 12th Street. \nThis event is co-presented with the Asian American Writers’ Workshop. For more information\, please visit their website at aaww.org. \n  \nCan’t make the event? Purchase a signed copy of Sublimation here. \n  \nACCESSIBILITY: \nStrand Book Store is an ADA compliant venue. The event space is accessible via elevator. \nASL interpretation is available for this event by request only. Please reach out to our events team at events@strandbooks.com by May 19 to request. \nPlease ask a Strand employee upon arrival for directions to accessible seating if preferred. \nFor further information on accessibility in this space\, or to make a request\, please contact events@strandbooks.com \n——————————————————————— \nDoppelgangers\, corporate intrigue\, heartbreak\, betrayal\, and the harsh permanence of the border: Sublimation is a thrilling and provocative debut for fans of Severance that asks what you’d sacrifice for a different life from award-winning author Isabel J. Kim. \nThe border cuts you in two. \nWhen you immigrate\, you leave a copy of yourself behind\, an instance. One person enters their new country; the other stays trapped at home. \nSome instances keep in touch\, call each other daily\, keep their lives and minds in sync in the hopes of reintegrating and resuming a life as one person. Others\, like Soyoung Rose Kang\, leave home at ten years old and never speak to their other selves again. Rose\, in America\, never imagined going back to Korea until her grandfather died and her Korean instance called her home for the funeral. \nShe doesn’t know that Soyoung plans to steal her body and her life.\nHow far would you go to live the choice you didn’t make? \n\n\n\nFor over 30 years\, the Asian American Writers’ Workshop (AAWW) has been dedicated to publishing and amplifying Asian American literary culture. Operating from a radically inclusive ethos\, AAWW expands the definition not only of who is a writer\, but also of who is Asian American. Through a robust and diverse lineup of programming\, AAWW serves as a vital sanctuary space for writers and readers alike. \n\n\n\nPhoto credit: Amanda Silberling \nIsabel J. Kim lives near New York City in an apartment filled with books and swords. She is the author of numerous short stories and has won the Nebula\, Locus\, and the Shirley Jackson Award. Her work has been translated into multiple languages and reprinted in multiple best of the year anthologies. When she’s not writing\, she’s practicing law or podcasting. Sublimation is her first novel. \n\n\n\nPhoto credit: Kristen Fedor \nJinwoo Chong is the author of I Leave It Up to You and the novel Flux\, a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway and VCU Cabell First Novel awards\, a New York Times Editors’ Choice\, and named a best book of the year by Esquire\, GQ\, and Cosmopolitan. His short stories and other work have appeared in The Southern Review\, Guernica\, The Rumpus\, LitHub\, Chicago Quarterly Review\, and Electric Literature. He lives in New York.

SUMMARY:JEST ASIANS: Lab Edition
DESCRIPTION:JEST ASIANS: Lab Edition is the small-room\, experimental sister show of JEST ASIANS — All-Pro Asian Comedy Showcase\, first co-presented by Humor Section and Asia Society New York. \nWhile the Asia Society edition brought a polished lineup of top Asian comedians to one of NYC’s leading cultural institutions\, the Lab Edition creates a more intimate and playful space at PARTEA LAB — a room for fresh jokes\, new ideas\, and close-up audience energy. But “experimental” does not mean random: every show is still carefully curated\, featuring comedians with strong voices\, real credits\, and material worth developing. \nThe show is produced by Humor Section\, a comedy brand founded in Beijing in 2013 and now based in New York. As one of the early forces in China’s stand-up comedy scene\, Humor Section helped build a platform for a new generation of comedians\, and now continues its mission in the U.S.: advancing Asian comedians on the global stage.

SUMMARY:Performance – The Table
DESCRIPTION:The Table is a new work of performance that explores insatiability\, grief\, and the body within larger systems. Through immersive\, visceral meditations and a fever dream-like performance language—combining movement\, puppetry\, and everyday objects—the work opens liminal\, shifting worlds where anything can become a portal. Rooted in Pink Fang’s legacy of socially engaged\, interdisciplinary performance\, the work centers collective experience\, relational exchange\, and the body as a site of inquiry. Both poetic and unsettling\, it examines the forces that drive desire and dissatisfaction\, asking a central question: What is enough?

SUMMARY:Art Exhibit: Shared Lines: Asian American Stories on Route 66
DESCRIPTION:Route 66 might be the U.S.’s most famous highway. Traversing the country from Santa Monica\, CA to Chicago\, IL\, it’s been immortalized in songs\, books\, and movies. But along that iconic highway are stories that are far lesser known. \nWith a grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation\, illustrator Sammy Yuen set out on a roadtrip to capture those stories. This exhibition — coinciding with Route 66’s 100th anniversary this fall — brings some of them to life. \nLike the stone guardian lions that appeared out of nowhere in Amboy\, CA\, a former ghost town purchased by Japanese American restaurateur and preservationist\, Albert Okura. The water towers in Kingman\, AZ that once supported operations of the railroad built by Chinese laborers. The Chinese American Museum of Chicago\, housed in an erstwhile tofu factory donated by Chinese immigrant and grocery magnate Raymond Lee. \n“This whole journey started with my first exhibition at Pearl River Mart\,” says Sammy. “Showing my new exhibition there brings it back\, full circle. I also like the idea of exploring Asian American communities outside of New York City’s Chinatowns. Beyond Manhattan and Flushing. Sometimes it’s just a strip mall or restaurants spread out in an area. But the stories of the people are often the same.” \nJoin us for the opening reception on June 6. Attendance is free but registration is appreciated. \n\nOn view June 6 through Sept. 27 in the Pearl River Mart gallery at 452 Broadway\nFree and open to the public every day from 11 AM to 7 PM\nLearn more in our interview with Sammy\n\nSpecial thanks to the National Trust for Historic Preservation\, who provided curation for this exhibition. \nThis exhibition is dedicated to Sammy’s father\, Sammy Yuen\, Sr. (1935 to 2026)\, for his unwavering support of the people he loved. \nAbout the Artist\nSammy Yuen is an artist\, illustrator\, designer\, writer\, and martial arts instructor. He is the recipient of multiple grants\, including awards from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council\, the National Trust for Historic Preservation\, and the Asian American Arts Alliance. His work has been exhibited at Pearl River Mart\, the Chinese American Museum of Chicago\, and Google Arts & Culture. He is currently developing a multi-generational picture book inspired by his family’s martial arts legacy. \nWith over 20 years of experience in the publishing industry\, he has created book covers — including more than 35 New York Times bestsellers — as well as marketing and advertising materials\, animated videos\, and social media assets. Across all of his work\, his goal is to tell stories that engage audiences and spark conversation.

He has also taught at The Cooper Union\, Syracuse University\, and The New School/Parsons School of Design. He has been a lecturer\, panelist\, or guest critic at many U.S. and overseas institutions. He is Chair of the Board of the American Academy in Rome\, where he was a resident in 2010\, and is President Emeritus of the Architectural League of New York\, where he continues to serve as a director. \n \nThrough the Tsao Family Foundation\, Mr. Tsao has recently effected major endowments for both the Harvard GSD and the American Academy in Rome. For the GSD\, he established the Real Estate Practicum as the new capstone requirement of the GSD’s Master in Real Estate (MRE) curriculum. The practicum\, which each student fulfills with a private\, public\, or non-profit real estate organization\, updates the paradigm for the MRE degree in that it advances a more holistic and contemporary approach to projects by which real estate development professionals can help to shape a more sustainable\, inclusive\, and vibrant future for their communities. For the American Academy in Rome\, he established three new scholarly programs. \n \nThe Tsao Family Rome Prize supports scholarship that illuminates the philosophical and existential ideas and questions that link eastern and western cultures\, drawing on the experience of Rome as a crossroads. These ideas and questions animate the world around us and are evident in art\, architecture\, design\, literature\, and even the writing and interpretation of history itself. Collectively\, the work emanating from this fellowship aims to encourage our world’s many societies and cultures to develop cooperatively and to strengthen the foundation of a more humane and mutually supportive global community. \n \nThe Tsao Family Residency supports distinguished Asian artists in a two month stay to create art or conduct research in the Academy’s library and archives. Tsao Family and Harvard University Graduate School of Design Affiliated Fellowship at the American Academy in Rome servers as a bridge by bringing the finest architects and designers at the GSD to the Academy to promote a critical engagement between the two institutions in the areas of architecture\, urban design\, or landscape design. \n \n▦ Moderator and Chair of the Committee of 100 Conversations ProgramPeter Young \nCEO\, Young & Partners \nCommittee of 100 Member\, New York Regional Chair and Board Member \nPeter Young is CEO of Young & Partners\, a boutique corporate strategy and investment banking firm focused on the life science and chemical industries. SUMMARY:Labor\, Cultural Work\, and More Ways to Organize the City
DESCRIPTION:This conversation draws crucial connections between cultural work and labor organizing in working-class communities across New York City. Bringing together organizers\, artists\, and community members\, the event traces how struggles over labor and land are deeply intertwined—from tenants organizing against evictions in Chinatown to campaigns resisting casino development in Flushing\, and movements to decriminalize sex work—we ask: are there other ways to organize the city? What forms of solidarity are necessary to build communities rooted in care? By placing past and present organizing in dialogue\, this program invites us to consider what forms of organizing are needed in this moment\, and how we build toward more sustainable futures for Chinatown residents and all working-class communities. \nWhether you’ve been part of W.O.W. since the beginning or are just getting to know the work\, we welcome you to join us for an evening of reflection\, celebration\, and community.
