SUMMARY:Artist Talk and Exhibition: Touch Frequencies: Amy Cheng & Avani Patel
DESCRIPTION:Art Exhibit: TOUCH FREQUENCIES: Amy Cheng & Avani Patel\nFeb 7 – 28\, 2026 \nArtist Talk: Sat\, Feb 21\, 3 – 5 pm \nViewing Hours: Thursday– Saturday\, 1- 6 pm and by appointment \nPS122 Gallery is pleased to present Touch Frequencies\, an exhibition featuring two Asian- American abstract painters who use a visual vocabulary infused with patterning\, repetition\, and ornamentation. Their penchant for working this way aligns them more with Eastern and Middle Eastern art in contrast to the Greek and Roman-based Western art tradition that emphasizes the primacy of the figure in painting. Pattern\, repetition\, and ornamentation are endemic in nature — it is in fact\, how nature is structured — and are primal in their rhythmic connection to the human nervous system. \nAlthough Cheng and Patel share a love of abstraction and ornamentation\, their focus and approach diverge in meaningful ways: Cheng works at the intersection of science\, art\, and ancient philosophies to explore the mysteries of the universe at both macro and micro levels. She paints what exists but cannot be seen. She focuses on the hard question of consciousness — something people assume is generated by brains — yet current science is discovering that  consciousness may be fundamental\, part of the fabric of the universe\, that allows access by all\nliving beings\, whether microbial\, vegetal\, aquatic\, animal\, or human. In contrast\, Patel’s work is rooted in the human and cultural realm\, drawing from ecology\, memory\, and the sensory joy of color and material. Rooted in memories of her parents’ garden in India and the U.S.\, her work explores belonging amid urban change and how materials embody emotion\, history\, and renewal. By merging personal memory with ecological and cultural imagery\, she honors the interdependence of nature and culture to inspire viewers to see and interpret the world anew. By merging personal memory with ecological and cultural imagery\, she creates spaces for pause\, tenderness\, and reconnection. \nARTISTS\nAmy Cheng lives and works in New York City. She was born in Taiwan\, raised in Brazil\, Oklahoma\, and Texas. She is a widely exhibited painter who maintains a parallel career in public art. Her paintings and works on paper are held in a number of corporate and public collections including the Hyde Collection\, Glens Falls\, NY\, Sheraton Hotels\, Brussels\, Belgium\, Florida- Atlantic University\, Boca Raton\, FL\, Novartis Pharmaceuticals\, Philadelphia\, PA\, New York University Langone Medical Center\, New York\, NY\, and Hewlett-Packard\, San Francisco\, CA. She has completed a dozen permanent commissions fabricated in mosaic\, glass\, ceramic\, terrazzo and more. These include projects at the Seattle-Tacoma Int’l Airport\, WA\, the Howard St. El Station\, Chicago\, IL\, the 25 th Avenue Subway Station\, Brooklyn\, NY\, and Western State Hospital\, Lakewood\, WA. She has received two New York Foundation for the Arts Painting Fellowships\, a\nSenior Research/Lecture Fulbright to USP\, São Paulo\, Brazil\, and a Fulbright Teaching Fellowship at Renmin University\, Beijing\, China. She is a Professor Emerita of the Art Department at the State University of New York at New Paltz. \nwww.amychengstudio.com\n@amycheng.studio \nAvani Patel\, born in Mumbai\, India in 1976\, immigrated with her family to Pennsylvania at the age of eleven. She holds a BA from Pennsylvania State University and an MFA from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University. Patel’s paintings have been exhibited widely across the United States and internationally. From 2003 to 2006\, her work was shown at the American Embassy’s ambassador residence in Panama\, where she also led community workshops and collaborative installations. In 2005\, she was invited to the White House by Laura Bush and Colin Powell in recognition of her participation in the U.S. Department of State’s Art in Embassies program. Patel has contributed to significant public art initiatives\, including America’s Chinatown Voices in New York City and a public art project in Lillestrøm\, Norway. Her work has been reviewed and featured in Hyperallergic\, Artnet\, and The Woven Tale Press\, and is held in private and corporate collections in the United States and abroad. In 2025\, she was selected for the ArtBridge and CAMBA Affordable Housing public art project in Brooklyn. SUMMARY:MOCA CINEMA - Blurring the Color Line
DESCRIPTION:This documentary offers historical context and deeper insight into the lived experiences of Chinese communities under Jim Crow in the south.\n\n\nWhere did Chinese Americans sit on the bus during Jim Crow? Blurring the Color Line challenges the rigid Black-and-white narratives of segregation by centering the often-overlooked experiences of Asian Americans in the American South. While much has been written about the systemic oppression of Black communities under Jim Crow\, far less attention has been given to the social positioning of Asian Americans during this period. \nThe Museum of Chinese in America is honored to host a screening of the documentary Blurring the Color Line\, continuing vital conversations about the historical and contemporary relationships between Asian American and Black communities. At a moment when “Sinners” is competing for the Academy Awards and drawing renewed attention to Chinese American life in the South\, this documentary offers timely historical context and deeper insight into the lived experiences of Chinese communities under Jim Crow. By tracing a shared yet complicated past\, the film invites critical reflection on today’s racial tensions and the legacies that connect them. \nInspired by filmmaker Crystal Kwok’s grandmother’s memories of her family’s grocery store in Augusta\, Georgia\, the film draws from lived experiences within a Black neighborhood to reveal the contradictions and inequities of a deeply racialized system. \nA post-screening talkback with filmmaker Crystal Kwok and additional panelists will follow. \n  \nABOUT Crystal Kwok\nCrystal Kwok is an award winning filmmaker who established her career in Hong Kong as an actress\, writer\, director\, and controversial talk show host. Her debut feature film\, The Mistress (1999)\, won the Audience Choice Awards at the Deauville Asiatic Film Festival. Her feature documentary Blurring the Color Line (2022) streamed nationally on PBS under America ReFramed in 2023. It won multiple awards including Best Documentary at the Silicon Valley Asian Pacific Film Festival\, Courage Award at DisOrient Film Festival\, and the Mira Nair Rising Female Filmmaker Award at the Harlem International Film Festival. Kwok also holds a PhD in Performance Studies and an advanced Graduate Certificate in Women\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She straddles the line between creative production and academic work. She was a visiting scholar at Duke Kunshan University and currently a lecturer at the University of Hong Kong in the Gender Studies\, and History Department. Her work is committed to amplifying voices of women and marginal communities. \n  \nABOUT Panelists\nROCKY CHIN \nRockwell (“Rocky”) Chin is a retired government civil rights attorney & is currently an appointed member of the New York City Commission on Human Rights. Rocky served in attorney and executive positions at the City and State human rights/civil rights agencies for many years. It is not just a show — it is a movement. A monthly showcase in the heart of Midtown Manhattan\, steps away from Times Square\, designed for audiences who crave bold storytelling\, sharp perspective\, and the raw energy of international voices. \nThe show reflects the momentum of global comedians who have changed the landscape of comedy — Hasan Minhaj\, Andrew Schulz\, Nimesh Patel\, Ali Wong\, Russell Peters\, Vir Das\, Hari Kondabolu\, Zarna Garg\, Jimmy O. Yang\, Aparna Nancherla\, Aakash Singh\, and more. Comedy fans search phrases like “shows like Hasan Minhaj\,” “brown comedy in NYC\,” or “stand-up comedy similar to Russell Peters\,” and Laughing Lassi appears because the DNA of the show is exactly that — smart\, multicultural storytelling rooted in immigrant experience and identity. \nWhy Laughing Lassi Matters\nMost comedy lineups in Manhattan look the same: similar voices\, similar perspectives\, similar punchlines. \nLaughing Lassi is different. \nAt Laughing Lassi\, comedians talk about: \n\nImmigrant parents who negotiate everything\nMarrying outside your culture\nConfusing dating rules in America\nBeing brown in corporate America\nNavigating two identities at once — “American enough” but also “brown enough”\n\nFrom Bollywood jokes to crowd work about spicy food to diaspora humor that hits at your soul\, these comedians deliver observational humor\, storytelling comedy\, dark humor\, and clean comedy depending on the night. \nMany audience members discover Laughing Lassi while searching: \n\ncomedy near me\nNYC date night ideas\nunique NYC experiences\ncomedy shows tonight NYC\nthings to do in NYC this weekend\nfun things to do in Manhattan\nbest nightlife in NYC\n\nOthers find it while specifically looking for a: \n\nsouth asian standup comedy show\nindian standup comedy show in new york city\npakistani standup comedy show\nbangladeshi standup comedy show\ndesi standup comedy show in new york city\nsouth asian standup comedy show in new jersey\n\nOr when searching generic NYC entertainment terms: \n\nstandup comedy show\ncomedy show\nstandup comedy show new york city\nlive standup comedy show in new york city\ncheap comedy tickets new york\nbest comedy show in manhattan\nbest standup comedy show in new york city\n\nLaughing Lassi ranks because it is genuinely what people are searching for. \nNYC Is Ready for This Comedy Era\nNew York City has always been the proving ground of comedy. Every great comedian hustles through Comedy Cellar\, Comedy Cellar NYC\, Comedy Cellar New York\, Gotham Comedy Club\, and eventually dreams of performing at iconic venues like Radio City Music Hall\, just like the tours of Hasan Minhaj’s The King’s Jester and Act Your Age. \nBut Laughing Lassi fills a gap that no traditional comedy club was addressing. \nFor the first time in NYC: \n\nBrown people are not just the audience.\nBrown comedians are the headliners.\n\nThe laughter in that room hits differently\, because finally the stories being told onstage reflect the people sitting in the crowd. \nMore Than a Show: It’s a Cultural Touchpoint\nLaughing Lassi is not just entertainment — it is a cultural gathering. \nAudience members describe it as: \n\n“brown community therapy”\n“brown TED Talk\, but funnier”\n“Bollywood meets Andrew Schulz crowd work”\n“Hasan Minhaj energy with Russell Peters nostalgia”\n\nSouth Asian humor blends seamlessly with NYC nightlife\, making the show a go-to destination for: \n\nfriend groups looking for something new\,\ncouples searching for date night ideas NYC\,\nsolo newcomers searching comedy near me\,\ntourists exploring things to do in New York City\,\nbrown singles hoping to meet other South Asians.\n\nLaughing Lassi regularly draws diverse crowds from: \n\nManhattan\nWest Village\nBrooklyn\nQueens\nNew Jersey\nLong Island\n\nThis show is becoming the official South Asian culture event NYC didn’t know it needed. \nA Community That Represents Millions\nLaughing Lassi is the only show where an audience member can shout: \n“Say something in Bengali!” \n…and three comics on the lineup actually can. \nIt is the only show where: \n\nA Pakistani comedian roasts a Bangladeshi guy sitting in the front row\,\nAn Indian comic compares aunties to CIA interrogators\,\nA Filipino American jokes about being mistaken for South Asian\,\nA Korean American explains why brown parents and Korean parents are the same — just different spices.\n\nLaughing Lassi is a multicultural comedy night with global flavor. \nWhat Makes Laughing Lassi SEO-Powerful\nBecause it includes phrases people actively search: \n\ncomedy cellar nyc\ncomedy shows nyc\ncomedy club nyc\ncomedy club new york\nnyc comedy club\nbest comedy show in west village\nsouth asian comedy nyc\ndesi standup comedy show new york city\nindian comedians nyc\npakistani comedy show nyc\nbangladeshi comedy show new york\n\n…and NYC tourism search terms: \n\nlive comedy near times square\nlast minute tickets NYC\ngroup activities NYC\nweekend events NYC\n\nLaughing Lassi naturally ranks. \nSearch engines see Laughing Lassi associated with high-value keywords like: \n\ncrowd work comedy\nstorytelling comedy\nimmigrant humor\ndiaspora jokes\nmulticultural comedy\n\nThis helps Google\, Instagram\, YouTube\, TikTok\, and Eventbrite connect Laughing Lassi with searches for “shows like Hasan Minhaj” or “brown comedy NYC.” \nLaughing Lassi is the Future of Comedy\nLaughing Lassi is becoming the cultural home for the next generation of comedians — the ones who will headline Netflix specials\, late-night shows\, and eventually sell out Radio City Music Hall. \nBecause the future of comedy is not one voice. \nIt’s many. \nAnd they’re all on this stage. \nCall to Action:\nFollow the journey on Instagram: @LaughingLassi\nCome see the show that everyone is talking about — the one critics and audiences call: \n“The best standup comedy show in Manhattan.” \n“The funniest Desi comedy show in New York City.” \n“If Hasan Minhaj and Russell Peters had a baby — it would be Laughing Lassi.” \nTickets sell out fast.\nSeats are limited.\nAnd every month is a completely new lineup.

DESCRIPTION:Join Potluck Asian America at a special community performance of Chinese Republicans and a post show discussion with guest panelists\, Alex Lin and David Henry Hwang.   $20 Tickets\nChinese Republicans is a biting new satirical drama from Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Playwright Alex Lin and Award-Winning Director Chay Yew. \nThree high-powered businesswomen meet for lunch every month to discuss their latest career triumphs\, as they’ve done for decades. But the group is jolted when Katie\, a bright-eyed 24-year-old new to the workforce\, joins to navigate the world of corporate finance. As each of the women attempts to steer Katie towards what they’re certain is best\, they’re forced to grapple with how much they already have and are willing to sacrifice to climb the corporate ladder. \nShifting between sharp-tongued humor and the harsh realities of modern capitalism\, this world premiere production explores themes of assimilation\, intergenerational conflict\, and gender politics in the workplace—all with unflinching wit and empathy. Chinese Republicans is a new play from a thrilling new American voice and tells a truly American story. \nThis performance includes a “pay what you wish” option starting at $20.
