SUMMARY:Writing Intimate Distance - Virtual Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Megan Pinto and Kiran Bath for a virtual workshop on writing about the people we love!\n\n\nHow do we write about the ones we love? A common writing adage is write what you know\, and while free writing\, we might find ourselves returning to core relationships that have shaped us\, be it romantic\, familial\, or platonic. How do we tell our own stories when they involve other people? Is there an ethical line to what we can and cannot say? Join poets Kiran Bath (Instructions for Banno\, Kelsey Street Press) and Megan Pinto (Saints of Little Faith\, Four Way Books) as they explore strategies to navigate self disclosure and shared history. We’ll explore a diverse range of formal approaches\, with close readings from poets such as Bhanu Kapil\, Reetika Vazirani\, and passages on craft from writers like Melissa Febos. We will also do some writing of our own. (Optional\, but not required\, bring in a passage of a draft you are struggling with to work on during this session). \n__ \nMegan Pinto is the author of Saints of Little Faith\, her debut collection\, just out from Four Way Books. Her poems can be found in the Los Angeles Review of Books\, Ploughshares\, Lit Hub and elsewhere. She has won the Anne Halley Prize from the Massachusetts Review and an Amy Award from Poets & Writers\, as well as scholarships and fellowships from the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference\, the Martha’s Vineyard Institute of Creative Writing\, the Port Townsend Writers’ Conference and Storyknife. Megan lives in Brooklyn and holds an MFA in poetry from Warren Wilson College. \nKiran Bath is a writer and lawyer currently based in New York. Her debut collection\, INSTRUCTIONS FOR BANNO was released in July 2024 with Kelsey Street Press. Kiran has received fellowships and support from Poets House\, the Vermont Studio Center and Brooklyn Poets. Kiran is a Kundiman fellow and a Tin House alumnus. Her writing appears in wildness\, The Adroit Journal\, The Brooklyn Rail and other journals. \n__ \nCOMMUNITY CARE & ACCESSIBILITY\nThis event will be streamed on Zoom Webinar. Please RSVP to receive a Zoom link via email\, which will be sent out two days in advance of the event. For other access needs\, please contact msaleh@aaww.org. \nAt AAWW\, the safety and comfort of our community is our top priority. We invite you to practice intentionality and care in your behavior and language when engaging with our programs and with each other. Violence of any kind\, including but not limited to racism\, sexism\, homophobia\, transphobia\, ableism\, ageism\, class or casteism\, bigotry or bias toward religion or faith\, or any action or assault against marginalized identities\, is not tolerated. Those who bring harm to our community in person or online are not welcome\, and will be asked to exit the space.

SUMMARY:Opium Wars\, Chinatown\, and NYC Punk with Alvin Eng
DESCRIPTION:NYPL Long-Term Fellow Alvin Eng presents a work-in-progress look at his forthcoming work of history and memoir\, Urban Oracle Bones\, which explores the cultural dynamic between opium and the “heroin chic” punk scene of 1970s NYC. Drawing on resources from the Library’s Henry W. and Albert A. Berg Collection of English and American Literature\, as well as firsthand accounts of life in Lower Manhattan and Chinatown\, Eng examines this period and its legacy through the dual lenses of William S. Burroughs’ character “Johnny Yen”—immortalized in Iggy Pop and David Bowie’s song “Lust for Life”—and his own grandfather’s opium overdose in Chinatown\, spotlighting the forces that shaped both his life and broader cultural movements.

SUMMARY:The Literature of Japanese American Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:Reception & Book Signing to Follow \nTO RSVP In Person or zoom: https://host.nxt.blackbaud.com/registration-form/?formId=4acaad42-64c0-494d-b709-d724ab8837ff&envId=p-rzKFBb2xVk253Ulcjd_x1w&zone=usa \nMarking Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month at Roosevelt House\, please join us\, together with the Hunter College Asian American Studies Program\, for a discussion of the new Penguin Classics anthology\, The Literature of Japanese American Incarceration. The event will feature the volume’s coeditors Frank Abe and Floyd Cheung in conversation with Hunter College professor of education\, and the granddaughter—and daughter—of incarcerated Japanese Americans\, Cathlin Goulding. \nAn “essential volume\,” according to The New Yorker\, this anthology recovers\, and reframes\, the literature produced by those affected by the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II— based solely upon the race they shared with a wartime enemy. In a decision even FDR’s great admirers have condemned as one of the most indefensible of his presidency\, the Roosevelt administration expelled resident aliens as well as U.S. citizens from their homes\, imprisoning 125\,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry in camps—without due process. \nFrom the extensive collection of essays\, memoirs\, letters\, fiction\, and poetry in the anthology emerges a shared story of the struggle to retain personal integrity in the face of increasing dehumanization. The contributors span incarcerees\, their children born in or soon after the camps\, and their descendants who reflect on the long-term consequences of mass incarceration for themselves and the nation. \nMany of the voices in the book are those of protest. Some are those of accommodation. All are authentic. Together\, they form an epic narrative with a singular vision of America’s past—one with disturbing resonances with the American present. \nAs citizens are once again incarcerated without due process\, under the same Alien Enemies Act used during WWII\, please join us for this important historical—and yet urgent—discussion. \nFrank Abe is the lead author of the graphic novel We Hereby Refuse: Japanese American Resistance to Wartime Incarceration and a finalist in creative nonfiction for the Washington State Book Award. He wrote\, produced\, and directed the award-winning PBS documentary Conscience and the Constitution\, on the largest organized camp resistance\, and\, with writer Frank Chin\, helped create the first Day of Remembrance in Seattle in 1978. \nFloyd Cheung is a professor of English Language and Literature and American Studies at Smith College. Coeditor and contributor to Recovered Legacies: Authority and Identity in Early Asian American Literature\, he has worked on the recovery of writings by H.T. Tsiang\, Sadakichi Hartmann\, Kathleen Tamagawa\, Munio Makuuchi\, and others. \nCathlin Goulding is a Hunter College professor of education and curriculum designer. She co-directs the YURI Education Project\, which helps PK-12 educators teach and tell Asian American histories. Her grandparents were incarcerated at the Jerome and Gila River camps\, where her mother was born.

SUMMARY:Ching Ho Cheng: Luminous Life and Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Panel conversation on the life and artistic legacy of Ching Ho Cheng with Sybao Cheng-Wilson\, Gordon Wilkins\, and Kyle Croft\n\n\nPlease join BANK NYC for a panel discussion on the life and artistic legacy of cultural luminary\, Ching Ho Cheng. This panel talk coincides with Cheng’s solo exhibition\, Tracing Infinity\, at BANK’s NYC pilot space from May 2 – June 14\, 2025. \nOur panelists\, Sybao Cheng-Wilson\, Director of the Estate of Ching Ho Cheng\, Gordon Wilkins\, Robert M. Walker Curator of American Art at the Addison Gallery of American Art\, and Kyle Croft\, Executive Director of Visual AIDS\, will contextualize Cheng’s work within the rich New York art scene of the 1970s and 1980s and offer critical perspectives on his practice as a prolific Asian American and LGBTQ artist. \nThis panel discussion precedes Cheng’s inclusion in Sixties Surreal at the Whitney Museum of American Art in Fall 2025 and his upcoming traveling retrospective\, Ching Ho Cheng: The Light Will Continue\, which will originate at the Addison Gallery of American Art in early 2027. This will be Cheng’s first major institutional retrospective\, which fervently reconsiders this Asian American artist’s often overlooked life and body of work. It will also be accompanied by a monograph published in collaboration with Visual AIDS. \n  \n\n\n\nSybao Cheng-Wilson was born and raised in New York City\, where both she and her mother studied at the Mayor School of Fashion Design. After graduating\, she moved to Paris and modeled for fashion icons Antonio Lopez and photographer Bill Cunningham while studying French and ballet. She returned to the US in the 1970s and created a collection of hand embroidered women’s wear with her mother\, distributed to boutiques and the finest department stores across the country. Cheng-Wilson was featured in New York Magazine’s Best Bets and Soho News. \nAs of 1989\, Cheng-Wilson has dedicated herself extensively to the stewardship and curatorial duties of Ching Ho Cheng’s extensive oeuvre as Director of the Estate of Ching Ho Cheng. She has organized posthumous solo exhibitions of her brother’s work at Shepherd W&K Galleries\, David Zwirner\, and Art Basel Miami\, as well as Cheng’s upcoming traveling retrospective at the Addison Gallery of American Art. \n  \n\n\n\nGordon Wilkins is the Robert M. Walker Curator of American Art at the Addison Gallery of American Art\, Phillips Academy\, Andover\, MA. Wilkins oversees the care\, exhibition\, and growth of the Addison’s world-renowned collection of American art across media with a particular focus on the art of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He has curated numerous exhibitions on a broad array of topics\, ranging from European-American perceptions of the natural world in the nineteenth century to 1970s Bay Area conceptual photography. Wilkins is currently working on several special exhibition projects\, notably Ching Ho Cheng: The Light Will Continue\, the artist’s first retrospective and posthumous solo museum exhibition. The exhibition will open in early 2027 at the Addison before travelling to additional venues. \n  \nBefore he arrived at the Addison in October 2018\, Wilkins served as the Assistant Curator for Exhibitions and Research at the Peabody Essex Museum\, Salem\, MA for three years where he helped organize several temporary and permanent exhibition projects and publications including the celebrated Sally Mann: A Thousand Crossings (co-organized with the National Gallery of Art\, Washington). He has contributed to several scholarly publications\, including Unnamed Figures: Black Presence and Absence in the Early American North (2023) and Young\, Gifted and Black: A New Generation of Artists (2020)\, and has lectured widely. Wilkins has also served as an Adjunct Professor of the History of American Art at the University of New Hampshire. \n  \n\n\n\nKyle Croft is the Executive Director of Visual AIDS. In his seven years with the organization\, he has worked to preserve the legacies of artists lost to AIDS and support a global community of artists living with HIV. He is organizing the exhibition Ministry: Reverend Joyce McDonald\, opening this July at the Bronx Museum\, and has edited volumes on Darrel Ellis\, Frederick Weston\, and William Olander.

SUMMARY:Teaching the 14th Amendment & Birthright Citizenship: Making Sense of the Political Moment Through Asian American Histories
DESCRIPTION:Birthright citizenship—a cornerstone of the 14th Amendment—is once again under attack. In partnership with Asian Law Caucus\, this workshop will delve into the history and ongoing relevance of the 14th Amendment\, exploring how Asian Americans have played a pivotal role in shaping its legacy. Together\, we’ll examine landmark moments including the Chinese Exclusion Act\, United States v. Wong Kim Ark\, and Executive Order 14160\, and reflect on the broader question: Who gets to be an American citizen? A legal representative from Asian Law Caucus will join us for a live Q&A to address the current threats to birthright citizenship and answer your questions. Educators will leave with historical context\, up-to-date legal insights\, and ready-to-use resources to teach this critical topic in their classrooms. \nFree and open to all. Professional Development hours awarded. \nFacilitator: Sulynn Miao \nThis event is brought to you by Teach Asian American Stories\, AAPI New Jersey\, and Asian Law Caucus.

SUMMARY:Chinatown '75 Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Tours on May 11\, 17\, and 18\, 2025 from 11:00am to 12:30pm \nCHINATOWN ‘75 is an interactive walking tour that tells the story of the police brutality case that rocked Chinatown and the protest movement that arose in its wake. In May of 1975\, 25\,000 protesters marched from Chinatown to City Hall to demand justice for the beating of Peter Yew. CHINATOWN ‘75 traces the route of the original march in commemoration of its 50th anniversary. \nBased on archival research and oral histories with march participants\, CHINATOWN ‘75 uses the Peter Yew protests to paint an in-depth portrait of a transformative moment in Chinatown’s history. We’ll explore how the interactions between radical social movements\, community organizations\, and the NYPD shaped the ensuing demonstrations\, and how the iconic photographs of the march came to symbolize a generation of Asian American activism. \nTours will be led by Dr. Michael Menor Salgarolo\, a New York City-based historian\, walking tour guide\, retired stand-up comedian\, and founder of UNASSIMILATED Walking Tours. He holds a PhD in History from New York University\, where he teaches courses in Asian/Pacific/American Studies in the Department of Social & Cultural Analysis. \nThis walk is presented by UNASSIMILATED Walking Tours and Think!Chinatown\, as part of the 2025 Chinatown Storytelling Festival. All proceeds from ticket sales will go to Think!Chinatown.
