SUMMARY:Film- History of NYC's Chinatown: The Toishanese Migration
DESCRIPTION:History of NYC’s Chinatown: The Toishanese Migration\nDocumentary Screening and Filmmaker April 29 6:30 (MoCA) \nw/ Virgo Lee & Chester Lee Q&A \nA newly released documentary from NYC Media that traces the origins of one of New York City’s most enduring neighborhoods. Through sweeping historical insight and intimate community voices\, the film centers the Toishanese immigrants who helped build not only America’s railroads\, but the foundations of Chinatown itself. \nAcross decades shaped by exclusion and resilience\, early arrivals forged a world of their own through family associations\, storefronts\, dialects\, and traditions. Within a few dense blocks\, they created networks of care that sustained generations and preserved cultural memory. Over time\, those roots extended beyond Manhattan\, shaping new Chinatowns in Sunset Park\, Flushing\, and Elmhurst\, each reflecting new waves of migration and evolving identities. \nFeaturing appearances from MOCA and members of the community\, the film offers a glimpse into a living history still unfolding. Following the screening\, stay for a conversation with producers Andrew Chow Guidone and Joy Lau\, joined by community members Virgo Lee and Chester Lee featured in the film. Together\, they will reflect on the process of documenting Chinatown’s layered histories and the urgency of preserving stories that are too often left untold.

Now\, at thirty\, Dahee has found herself in a Korean American community in a New England beach town\, once more running to the rescue of her debt-ridden relative. Ever the idealist\, Channing—who has spent her life haunted by the tragic story of Chunhyang and Mongryong\, Korea’s parallel Romeo & Juliet—has fallen in love with Minjae Oh\, all the while fending off the advances of powerful\, manipulative Kent Cho\, a local politician. As Channing and Minjae’s romance blossoms\, and as Kent’s suspicion and obsession grow\, Dahee begins to realize that it may be up to her to make sure her cousin and beloved escape Chunhyang and Mongryong’s doomed end. \nFor fans of Hello Beautiful\, Dreamt I Found You is a wondrous\, tender retelling of Korea’s most classic love story\, steeped in the travails of a rigid class system\, the power of premonition\, and shot through with Korean folklore and magic. \nJimin Han was born in Seoul\, South Korea\, and grew up in Providence\, Rhode Island; Dayton\, Ohio; and Jamestown\, New York. She is the author of A Small Revolution and The Apology. She has written for NPR’s Weekend America\, Poets and Writers Magazine\, Catapult Magazine\, Platypus Press\, and Citric Acid Literary Journal\, among others. SUMMARY:Theater: Indian Princesses (with Discount on May 17)
DESCRIPTION:Access $25 tickets Use Disount Code: JAANY for May 17 at 7pn show. \nIndian Princesses\nby Eliana Theologides Rodriguez\ndirected by Miranda Cornell \nn the summer of 2008\, five young girls of color and their white fathers attend a program designed to bond families through handmade activities\, camp-like adventures\, and a heavy dose of cultural appropriation. But where can these girls turn when the program sparks questions that their fathers are unable – or unwilling – to answer? Inspired by the playwright’s experiences in a father-daughter program of the same name\, Indian Princesses is a tender satire that explores the stories we tell\, the histories we omit\, and the truths that live inside us\, waiting to come out.

SUMMARY:Book Event: Mother Dearest: Understanding our Mothers
DESCRIPTION:A conversation will traverse three countries to explore the most fundamental relationship of all: mother and child.\n\n\nMother Dearest: Understanding our Mothers\nAll PEN World Voices Festival tickets are non-refundable. Please confirm the time and location of your event before finalizing your purchase. \nAs much as we are shaped by mothers\, they too are shaped by their times and social milieu. \nIn three new books\, Abdellah Taïa\, Gish Jen\, and Molly Jong-Fast grapple with their mothers and the complexity of those difficult and loving relationships. In Living in Your Light (tr. Emma Ramadan)\, Taïa follows three moments in the life of Malika\, a Moroccan countrywoman and fictionalized version of his mother\, from 1954 to 1999. In Bad Bad Girl\, Jen blends autofiction and memoir to trace her mother’s life from her birth in Shanghai in 1924 in an attempt to understand why her mother was so hard on her. Jong-Fast’s memoir How to Lose Your Mother follows a year in the author’s life as she navigates her mother’s dementia and looks back on her sometimes chaotic childhood as the daughter of a celebrity mother. \nModerated by Dalia Azim (Country of Origin)\, this conversation will traverse Morocco\, Shanghai\, and 1970s New York City to explore the most fundamental relationship of all: mother and child. \n\n\nThe 2026 PEN World Voices Festival is a celebration of world literature and free expression. The 2026 edition will be the 21st World Voices Festival. SUMMARY:Bangladesh Not "Bhaangadesh"
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition explores how Bangladeshis in Bangladesh and beyond took actions during the 2024 mass uprisings against the quota system in place\, since 1972\, immediately after the birth of the country in 1971. Featuring articles such as printed international artworks by Bangladeshi artists\, handcrafted tools\, and relevant media\, the exhibition serves as a homage to learn\, reflect\, discuss\, and heal. \nBangladesh\, Not “Bhaangadesh” seeks to raise social (in)justice awareness through showcasing Bangladeshi artistic expression\, and persistent crimes against humanity from the summer of 2024–of government-implemented curfews\, with “shoot-on-sight” commands\, country-wide internet revoked\, houses raids\, innocent lives taken\, and unnecessary arrests made\, etc. After decades of corruption and nepotism\, Bangladeshi students stood up against the unjust quota system of prioritizing government positions rather than basing hiring on skill\, talent\, and merit–for descendants of ancestors prominent in the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971.

SUMMARY:Who Belongs? Stories Against a Narrowing World
DESCRIPTION:PEN America World Voices Festival closing night event!\n\n\nWho Belongs? Stories Against a Narrowing World\nAll PEN World Voices Festival tickets are non-refundable. Please confirm the time and location of your event before finalizing your purchase. \nGlobally\, political and cultural forces are aligning to narrowly define national identities. Surging book bans\, the outlawing of languages\, the erasure of histories from official records\, and the censorship of words increasingly limit who belongs and delineate who is other. Literature subverts that.  \nFor the festival’s closing night event\, PEN America President Dinaw Mengestu will convene prominent international writers to discuss how literature champions a diversity of cultures and reflects the multiple heritages\, customs\, and traditions we all carry. Joining Mengestu in this vital conversation are Tash Aw (The South)\, Susan Choi (Flashlight)\, and Madeleine Thien (The Book of Records).  \nCART caption is provided at this event. SUMMARY:Beyond the Pages: How Ashley Lam bridges corporate success and cultural legacy through storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Ashley Lam is an Executive Director at BNP Paribas\, with 15 years of experience in financial technology\, compliance\, and operational risk. She’s also the author of Wrapped with Love: Wonton Noodle Day with Grandma—a debut children’s picture book she created for her daughter and her mother\, all while raising three kids and without a publishing background. \nAshley didn’t write the book to change careers. She wrote it because the story she wanted to give her daughter didn’t exist yet. \nThis isn’t your average book talk; think of it as a live YouTube podcast with a business edge. To help tell Ashley’s story\, Sabeen Khan will lead the conversation. With a background in tech investment banking at Bank of America\, her own history of bold creative leaps as a beauty/wellness/tech startup co-founder and narrative builder at Refinery29\, Sabeen knows how to peel back the layers of Ashley’s personal and professional journey.
