SUMMARY:DJ Rekha in Washington Park
DESCRIPTION:Come dance with DJ Rekha in Washington Park!\n\n\nDJ Rekha will be in Washington Park in celebration of Meena Hasan’s gallery show in the Old Stone House. \n \nAbout the gallery:\nThings Fall Apart: Meena Hasan at the Old Stone House \nOn View: May 2\, 2025 – July 6\, 2025 \nIn collaboration with Dylan Yeats and Imran Khan \nThis site-specific installation draws inspiration from the fact that British commander Charles Cornwallis\, who occupied the Old Stone House during the Battle of Brooklyn in 1776\, later defeated one of the fiercest opponents of colonialism in India\, Tipu Sultan\, the Tiger of Mysore. Hasan’s paintings wrestle with the contradictions of history\, memory\, and image – asking us to piece ourselves together within the various layers of disruption\, connection\, destruction\, and creation we have inherited. \n \nAbout DJ Rekha\nDJ Rekha (born Rekha Malhotra) is a DJ\, producer\, curator\, and educator. Their dynamic dub and hip-hop informed DJ sets often incorporate South Asian Diasporic dance music with ears to a global sound that resonates with dancefloors across the planet. They are the founder of Basement Bhangra™\, Bollywood Disco\, Lipstick Optional\, and co-founder of Mutiny (with Vivek Bald) and Ronak (with Atif Ateeq) club nights. \nAs a sound designer and producer Rekha worked for the TONY award-winning Broadway Show\, “Bridge and Tunnel\,” and received a Drama Desk Award nomination for their work on the play “Rafta Rafta.” Rekha was the associate producer for the NPR Radio Documentary\, “A Feet in Two Worlds.” They created the opening theme (with Raj Makhija and David Sharma) for Padma Lakshmi’s Hulu show\, “Taste the Nation.” They have done remixes for artists that range from Meredith Monk to Major Lazer. \nDJ Rekha was NYU’s A/P/A Artist-in-Residence for 2006-2007. SUMMARY:AAPI Art and Power Intersect: Creative Media for Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:Hear from artists who uplift AANHPI voices\, help inform our communities\, and advocate for our rights through their work at this virtual event on Friday\, May 30th 2 PM – 3 PM ET. As we close out Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM)\, we reflect on how AAPI women and gender expansive people use diverse media to empower our communities and inspire acts of resistance\, throughout history and today. We’ll discuss the power of art in movements and why this is especially resonant with and critical for AAPI communities. Panelists will discuss how AAPI artists are using their platforms to change the world; the idea that art is intrinsically “political”; and the history of art in movement work. There will be time for Q&A at the end of the panel. Please register to be able to submit questions.\n\n\nPanel: \n\nNatalie Bui\nJanet S. Kim\nAmanda Phingbodhipakkiya

SUMMARY:MOCA x Committee of 100 x NY Phil Musicians Present: Home and Belonging
DESCRIPTION:This performance highlights music by composers and performers from across the AAPI diaspora.\n\n\nJoin the Musicians of the New York Philharmonic for a special afternoon of music in celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. This concert is part of their ongoing commitment to fostering community\, inclusivity\, and representation in the performing arts while amplifying the missions of partner organizations. This event highlights the work of Committee of 100\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the participation and representation of Chinese Americans in all areas of American life. \nCentered around the themes of home and belonging\, this concert brings powerful storytelling through music to communities beyond Lincoln Center — and invites audiences to connect through shared experiences and new perspectives. \nNearly one-third of the Philharmonic’s musicians are of Asian descent. This performance honors their cultural heritage and artistic voices\, highlighting music by composers and performers from across the AAPI diaspora. The works featured in the program were chosen for the personal significance they hold for the performers. The afternoon will also include a brief presentation from Committee of 100\, who will share more about their mission and impact. \nWe hope you’ll join us for this meaningful celebration — a tribute to identity\, heritage\, and the power of music to bring us home. \nMUSICIANSHannah Choi\, violinAlina Kobialka\, violinAnna Rabinova\, violinLeah Ferguson\, violaCong Wu\, violaClaire Kim\, celloQiang Tu\, celloSumire Kudo\, cello \nPROGRAMSEight Chinese Folk Songs (1998)\, Zhou Long (b. 1953)I. What started in a backyard as a space for performers to share their craft has grown into a dynamic community platform. DearCo uplifts emerging artists hosting events from music and poetry to comedy\, magic\, and beyond\, we exist to celebrate performance in all its forms and to foster meaningful connection. Welcoming not just artists\, but also young professionals seeking space beyond their day-to-day to explore\, express\, and connect. \nViet Creative Society (@vcs.nyc) sparked from a single video call between creatives. Their first collaboration—a fashion show paired with original music—led to the birth of an organization that now highlights and connects Vietnamese artists across NYC. VCS is about empowerment\, visibility\, and celebration through art. \nGrab yours now and come be part of something special!! \n
