SUMMARY:SUZIK (Queens)
DESCRIPTION:South Korean company Force defies gravity in this street circus performance and NYC premiere. \n\nSuzik—the Korean word for verticality—is a Chinese pole performance that reimagines the vertical as a space of connection\, trust\, and collective movement. Three performers navigate the precarious heights of the pole\, entering a world where balance depends on the presence\, strength\, and care of others. \nAgainst the force of gravity\, Suzik explores a different way of moving upward: not through individual ascent\, but through shared momentum. The performers reach\, support\, and respond to one another\, transforming moments of risk into acts of trust and possibility. \nSuzik extends its exploration of connection beyond the pole itself\, transforming each public setting into a place of encounter and shared experience. As the performers reshape the vertical structure of the pole into a site of relationship and reciprocity\, the work invites audiences to imagine new ways of moving through the world together. \nABOUT THE FESTIVAL \nCitizen Arts International transforms New York City’s public spaces into vibrant stages for free international performance\, participatory art\, and cultural exchange. Bringing art into everyday life across the boroughs\, the festival fosters civic engagement and strengthens social connection. \nThe Citizen Arts International Festival is produced in partnership with Citizen Arts and Education and the Ukrainian Museum\, in affiliation with Social Practice CUNY\, with special thanks to the PhD Theatre + Performance Program at the CUNY Graduate Center. \nwww.citizenartsinternational.org \n@citizenartsinternational

SUMMARY:All Star Video / Adelic Penguins
DESCRIPTION:All Star Video\n『電子の拓本』 \nOpening with Ongaku Zukan era Ryuichi Sakamoto in a technological haze\, All Star Video breaks out into a series of interviews\, documenting “All Stars” of the New York arts scene—John Cage\, Allen Ginsberg and Charlotte Moorman among them—many of whom are interviewed by Sakamoto himself. Re-enacting Fluxus performances\, from cello concertos to a piano’s destruction\, and interspersed with musical interludes throughout\, Paik’s All Star Video pays an indelible tribute to the collaborative spirit of Fluxus and the avant garde. \nDir. Nam June Paik\, 1984\, 32 min.\, digital\, color\, in English and Japanese. With Ryuichi Sakamoto\, Allen Ginsberg\, Charlotte Moorman\, Laurie Anderson\, John Cage. \nAdelic Penguins \nCommissioned by Sony and performed live on a fourteen-story TV set aptly named the JumboTRON at the Expo in Tsukuba\, Adelic Penguins is a six-part video art mesh of diving penguins\, chroma key composites and propulsive rhythms. Sakamoto\, not merely credited with composing the music\, appears on screen dancing\, twirling and performing in the expanse of Fitzgerald and Garrin’s radiating\, polychromatic overdrive.  \nDir. Kit Fitzgerald\, Paul Garrin\, 1986\, 33 min.\, digital\, color\, in Japanese with English subtitles. \nPart of Music by Ryuichi Sakamoto\nSeptember 11—12

SUMMARY:Tokyo Decadence
DESCRIPTION:Based on Ryu Murakami’s 1988 short story Topaz and lesser known than Hideaki Anno’s point-and-shoot adaptation of its sequel Love & Pop: Topaz 2\, Tokyo Decadence marks the fourth feature directed by the transgressive author behind Audition and In the Miso Soup. A murky descent into Tokyo’s seductive underworld of BDSM\, Murakami’s erotic drama whisks lovesick callgirl Ai (Miho Nikaido) between clients amid the empty spaces of high-rise lofts and dimly lit hotels in Tokyo’s nocturnal cityscape. Murakami formulates a bleak indictment of Japan’s bubble-era excess as Ai struggles to find purpose and meaning in catering to the degrading desires and hedonistic fantasies of an anesthetized elite. \nDir. Ryu Murakami\, 1992\, 113 min\, DCP\, color\, in Japanese with English subtitles. With Miho Nikaido\, Sayoko Amano\, Yayoi Kusama. \nPart of Music by Ryuichi Sakamoto\nSeptember 11—12

SUMMARY:Between China and the West: Gu Hongming’s Cultural Homecoming
DESCRIPTION:Few figures in modern Chinese intellectual history have generated as much fascination and controversy as Gu Hongming (1857–1928). His extraordinary life\, lived across cultures and civilizations\, continues to raise profound questions about cultural identity\, intellectual tradition\, and the relationship between China and the West. As discussions of global order and intercultural dialogue take on renewed urgency\, revisiting Gu Hongming’s life and thought offers a timely opportunity to reflect on the historical encounters between China and the wider world. \nThe Renwen Society of China Institute is pleased to present an online lecture by Dr. Chunmei Du\, Professor and Chair of the Department of History at Lingnan University\, Hong Kong\, on September 12\, 2026 (8:00–9:30 PM EDT). Based on her newly published Chinese book\, Gu Hongming’s Eccentric Chinese Odyssey (Qishi Yilü: Gu Hongming Huanxiang Ji\, 2026)\, the lecture offers a fresh perspective on one of the most intriguing figures in modern Chinese history. \nGu Hongming (1857–1928) remains one of the most controversial figures in modern Chinese intellectual history. Born in British Malaya and educated in Europe\, he stunned many by remaking himself as a loyal supporter of the Qing dynasty and a devoted defender of Confucianism. He championed monarchy and Confucian morality\, even defending practices such as footbinding and the queue\, while proclaiming the superiority of the “spirit of the Chinese people” over modern Western civilization. Seen by many of his Chinese contemporaries as an ultraconservative\, he nonetheless rose to prominence in the West as a prophetic voice from the East \nToday\, as shifting geopolitics revive debates about “the West versus the Non-West\,” Gu Hongming’s reflections feel strikingly contemporary. His critique opens up space for intercultural dialogue from a perspective that is at once insider and outsider. His legacy also speaks to ongoing efforts to reimagine “authentic” Chinese culture as a powerful vehicle for projecting global soft power. \nPublished in 2026 by Social Sciences Academic Press\, the Chinese edition of Gu Hongming’s Eccentric Chinese Odyssey traces Gu’s intellectual and psychological journey against the sweeping currents of global history. Following this “cultural amphibian” across geographical\, cultural\, and racial boundaries\, the book explores his lifelong search for belonging. It brings to life a trickster-sage who moved restlessly between worlds\, never fully at home in either. That in-between existence shadowed him with personal loss\, yet it also gave him the distinctive voice that carried his ideas into global civilizational debates. \nIn this lecture\, Professor Du will draw on her research and the writing of Gu Hongming’s Eccentric Chinese Odyssey to reexamine Gu Hongming’s intellectual world and his lifelong search for cultural belonging. Through the story of this remarkable “cultural amphibian\,” she will explore how Gu crossed geographical\, cultural\, and racial boundaries while navigating between civilizations\, and how his complex legacy continues to illuminate questions of intercultural understanding\, dialogue\, and identity in today’s world.

SUMMARY:Donald Cammell’s Wild Side (Director’s Cut)
DESCRIPTION:The fourth and final film of eccentric filmmaker Donald Cammell\, best known for his brilliant 1970 debut Performance co-directed with Nic Roeg\, Wild Side was butchered by studio interference\, re-cut and taken away from Cammell who subsequently took his own life. A provocative\, erotic neo-noir starring Christopher Walken in one of his most over-the-top performances\, Wild Side indulges in a rapacious world of power\, sex\, crime and money. Walken’s paranoid Bruno\, a notorious money launderer\, is the subject of an undercover sting operation that pulls in Anne Heche’s banker-turned-high-class prostitute\, who in turn becomes enraptured with Bruno’s elegant wife (Joan Chen). Painstakingly re-cut by Cammell’s widow and longtime editor using Cammell’s notes and a personal cut\, this posthumous director’s cut restores much of its original vision: its humor\, avant garde leanings and non-linear plotting\, along with a new score by Ryuichi Sakamoto. Screening on one of only two 35mm prints ever made. \nDir. Donald Cammell\, 1995/2000\, 111 min.\, 35mm\, color\, in English. With Anne Heche\, Christopher Walken\, Joan Chen\, Steven Bauer\, Allen Garfield\, Adam Novak. \nPart of Music by Ryuichi Sakamoto\nSeptember 11—12

SUMMARY:SUZIK (Brooklyn)
\n\n\nABOUT THE FESTIVAL \nCitizen Arts International transforms New York City’s public spaces into vibrant stages for free international performance\, participatory art\, and cultural exchange.

SUMMARY:One-Day Nihon Buyo Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is designed for those who are interested in Nihon Buyo (Traditional Japanese Kabuki Dance) and are considering joining our 8-week Nihon Buyo Workshop. \nThis 90-minute workshop is an introductory class where you will have the opportunity to experience and explore some of the movements of Japanese traditional dance (Nihon Buyo). \nUnlike modern dance\, which often features outward\, energetic\, and fast-paced movements\, Nihon Buyo is characterized by inward\, subtle\, and quiet movements. The mind must move along with the body\, requiring concentration\, awareness\, and an understanding of the movements. \nThis workshop is recommended for anyone interested in exploring this style of movement\, as well as those who are considering joining the 8-week beginner workshop series starting in October. \nDuring the workshop\, you will have the opportunity to experience and learn what will be taught in the full course. Because it can be difficult to understand the body movements while wearing a kimono\, participants will not wear kimono or yukata during the workshop. Please wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. Participants will dance in socks. \nWe apologize\, but this workshop is not recommended for people with knee problems. Photography and video recording are not permitted during the workshop. \nLocation: Andy’s Studios\, 353 West 48th Street\, 3rd Floor\, Manhattan

SUMMARY:Book Launch for Ke Huy Quan's Memoir: Never Say Die
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a release event with Oscar-winning actor Ke Huy Quan\, discussing his new memoir NEVER SAY DIE. \n\nThis event will be hosted on the 6th Floor of The Strand Building located at 826 Broadway on 12th Street. \nCan’t make the event? Purchase a signed copy of Never Say Die here. \n——————————————————————— \nIn this stunning and compulsively readable memoir\, the Oscar-winning star of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom\, The Goonies\, and Everything Everywhere All at Once\, Ke Huy Quan\, tells the story of his journey from Vietnamese refugee to 80s child star to the most inspiring comeback in Hollywood history. \n“A monumental work of self-discovery and the power and grace of communal survival. Quan’s voice is crystalline and luminous\, and his Odyssean journey to the screen is\, in itself\, a triumph of storytelling.” –Ocean Vuong \nKe Huy Quan’s Hollywood adventure began when he was twelve years old\, a mere five years after his family escaped Communist Northern Vietnam and settled down to a relatively peaceful life in L.A.’s Chinatown. After attending an open call audition on a whim\, he was unexpectedly swept up in the wild world of filmmaking: learning to swim from Harrison Ford on the set of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom\, receiving trucks full of toys from Steven Spielberg and George Lucas for his birthday\, meeting Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker\, and making lifelong friends on the set of The Goonies. \nA star of two of the most beloved movies of the ‘80s\, there appeared to be no limit to Ke’s rise. But just a few years later\, the roles had dried up and it seemed like Hollywood no longer had a place for him. He eventually left acting to work odd jobs behind the scenes for directors like Wong Kar Wai. His confidence was badly shaken\, but his love of performing never abated. It wasn’t until decades later\, when he was 49 years old\, that he stepped back in front of the camera to star in a strange little indie film called Everything Everywhere All at Once\, which surprised everyone with its incredible box-office and awards season success. To call Ke’s Oscar-winning performance a triumphant return would be an understatement. \nIn this moving\, inspirational memoir\, Ke paints a vivid self-portrait\, telling both heart-wrenching and funny stories of his early rise\, slow fall from the spotlight\, the resilience that kept him going through his darkest times\, and his eventual resurrection on one of the biggest stages in Hollywood. Never Say Die is the story of Ke’s extraordinary life\, a love letter to the movies and people that shaped him\, and a powerful testament to never giving up on your dreams.

SUMMARY:Book Launch | Against Tech Oligarchy by JS Tan and Clarissa Redwine
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE BOOK \n\n\n\nAs tech bosses fall in line with the right\, tech workers are fighting back. This is the rousing inside story of their movement—and the way it spawned an anti-worker backlash now reshaping the industry. \nAfter Donald Trump’s election in 2016\, the tech industry sprang into action to oppose his right-wing agenda\, with workers and CEOs alike joining mass mobilizations against the new president’s anti-immigrant policies. But it wasn’t long before the tech bosses started to fall in line with the new administration. \nIn response\, tens of thousands of tech workers protested against their own employers for betraying the progressive values that once defined the industry—including organizing against military contracts\, walking out to protest sexism\, and even launching a wave of union drives. By the early 2020s\, these workers had sparked what observers were calling the tech worker movement\, one that seemed capable of checking the industry’s reckless growth and reactionary drift. \nBut as their struggle grew\, so did the employers’ backlash. A new class consciousness took root among tech’s billionaire owners. Hell-bent on stamping out any and all dissent\, tech executives embraced Trumpism\, fired organizers\, and began lashing out against the “woke” ideology they blamed for turning their once loyal employees against them—and replacing the good tech jobs of the 2010s with incessant layoffs\, grind culture\, and a management style that treats workers as disposable. \nAGAINST TECH OLIGARCHY provides a gripping account of this inspiring workers’ movement and the rise of the hostile labor politics that define Silicon Valley today. \nABOUT THE AUTHORS \nJS Tan is getting his PhD at MIT and formerly worked in tech\, where he spent years organizing across the industry. His work has been featured in The New York Times\, MIT Technology Review\, Dissent\, Jacobin\, Foreign Policy\, The Baffler\, and The Guardian\, among other outlets. More of his work can be found here. \nClarissa Redwine helped organize the Kickstarter union\, and has since dedicated herself to organizing the industry. She cofounded and runs the annual tech organizing conference Circuit Breakers. Her organizing work has been featured in The New York Times\, the BBC\, The Guardian\, The Verge\, TechCrunch\, and elsewhere.

SUMMARY:Curator’s Talk: Strolling Together in the World of Chinese Art
DESCRIPTION:Join three expert art historians in unraveling China Institute Gallery’s anniversary exhibition\, China Institute Gallery at 60\, 1966–2026: Selections from Three Millennia of Chinese Art. Bringing decades of collective expertise\, the speakers will recount the multifaceted stories and messages embedded within these works. They will unpack their ancient history\, whether as objects of private scholarly treasures or as public assertions of dynastic power\, while also remarking on their modern history in the Gallery’s 122 past exhibitions over the past 60 years. \nThe presentations will span a wide variety of media\, featuring classical paintings and ceramics alongside garden rocks\, jades\, and other small objects that recreate the complete sensory tapestry of Chinese cultural life. \nThrough three keynotes and a panel discussion\, the cherished tradition of scholarly dialogue will be revived. We invite you to stroll alongside our curators\, to observe\, admire\, and contemplate these works in intimate detail. \n\nKeynote One: “Pursuit of the Afterlife”\nSpeaker: Dr. Annette Juliano 朱安耐\nFor the ancient Chinese\, the pursuit of the afterlife meant ensuring the deceased’s transition to another realm. This required anticipating their needs and correctly preparing the tomb.  An ancient sage summarized the process: the deceased were treated “as though dead and yet still alive\, as though gone and yet still present.” Well-cared-for ancestor spirits meant good fortune for living. Neglected spirits turned into implacable ghosts. My discussion will center around the enormous creativity this pursuit inspired in Chinese culture – making objects for the tomb\, such as mingqi (clay spirit objects). I will incorporate objects from the exhibition as well as from other sources. \n\nKeynote Two: “The Scholar’s World”\nSpeaker: Dr. David Ake Sensabaugh 江文苇\nOver the past six decades\, China Institute has held many exhibitions that have introduced the world of the Chinese scholar. I will concentrate on just a few works from exhibitions on gardens\, rocks\, books\, and seals. These were all subjects of groundbreaking exhibitions\, and we are fortunate to have been able to reassemble several works from those exhibitions. I will discuss paintings from the Ming dynasty depicting gardens and rocks; rocks from the Qing dynasty; rare books published in the late Ming dynasty; and hardstone seals and books of seal impressions from the early Qing dynasty. All of them open up aspects of life in traditional China. \n\nKeynote Three: “What Makes a Great Chinese Painting?”\nSpeaker: Dr. Alfreda Murck 姜斐德\nChina Institute Gallery at 60 has fifteen excellent paintings on display. They range in date from the Southern Song (12th–13th century) to a few months ago. They range in size from small fans to a hanging scroll two and a half meters tall. Selected to represent ten exceptional exhibitions\, many of these paintings exhibit the factors that make for a great work of art. I will talk about five factors that make a painting compelling. Most of my examples come from paintings in the exhibition; a few are from other sources. Full disclosure – these are subjective judgments but based on years of studying and admiring Chinese paintings.

SUMMARY:The Cherry Orchard
DESCRIPTION:Considered one of the great plays of the modern era\, Anton Chekhov’s final play about a family on the edge of ruin is radically reimagined by acclaimed director and dramatist Simon Stone\, who returns to the Armory following his blistering Obie-Award winning take on Federico García Lorca’s Yerma (2018). His refreshing adaptation resets the action from Russia to a rapidly transforming modern-day Seoul\, South Korea\, where the original noble siblings are now corporate heirs struggling to adapt to a world that has moved on without them\, suffocated by a rising middle class and wealthy self-made entrepreneurs. Caught between the past and the present\, hope and despair\, tradition and innovation\, the chaebol family is forced to grapple with the inevitable forces of change. \nJeon Do-yeon is well-known for her roles in You Are My Sunshine (2005) and Secret Sunshine (2007)\, for which she was awarded Best Actress at the 60th Cannes Film Festival and making her the first Korean actor to receive such recognition. The talented actress stars alongside Emmy-nominated actor Park Hae-soo of worldwide Squid Game fame as well as a stellar all-Korean ensemble cast in spontaneous\, immediate performances. Equal parts tragedy and comedy\, the story unfolds on a masterfully designed set by celebrated architectural designer Saul Kim that features a modern\, transparent glass house allowing audiences a voyeuristic peek into the characters’ private lives. An intimate\, bittersweet portrait that is deeply South Korean and yet universally moving\, this must-see reinterpretation is a timely reflection of loss\, change\, and social transformation. \nTickets start at $45 (including fees) \n🎟️ Special Offer for KCCNY followers!\n✨ Save 10% on tickets for all performances\n🎫 Use promo code: CHERRYKCCNY\n⏰ Offer valid through 11:59 PM (ET) on August 21\, 2026. Standard ticketing fees apply. \n🗣️ Performed in Korean with English captions. \nPhoto credit: Studio AL\, LG Arts Center

SUMMARY:MOCA PERFORMS – Three Lives
DESCRIPTION:THREE LIVES is an autobiographical solo show that follows Alex Xander Luu and his family’s escape from war-torn Saigon in 1975 to America. Journeying across continents and generations\, “Three Lives” presents the Vietnam War story through the eyes and experiences of its oft-forgotten casualty – – its refugees – – his father\, grandfather\, and Luu himself as their lives are violently uprooted and resettled in the “promised land.” With equal doses of laughter and heartbreak\, Three Lives combines humor\, kinetic physical movement\, and raw storytelling that peels back the layers of the standard Hollywood narrative of the Vietnam War and instead gives a front and center portrait of the equally comical and painful effects of assimilation\, the loss & reclaiming of identity\, and the strength of the human spirit. Coming on the heels of 2025’s 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War\, Three Lives frames the personal immigrant narrative and its timeless themes against the universal backdrop of today’s fraught political climate. \nTime: 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM each day
