SUMMARY:Bangladesh Not "Bhaangadesh"
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition explores how Bangladeshis in Bangladesh and beyond took actions during the 2024 mass uprisings against the quota system in place\, since 1972\, immediately after the birth of the country in 1971. Featuring articles such as printed international artworks by Bangladeshi artists\, handcrafted tools\, and relevant media\, the exhibition serves as a homage to learn\, reflect\, discuss\, and heal. \nBangladesh\, Not “Bhaangadesh” seeks to raise social (in)justice awareness through showcasing Bangladeshi artistic expression\, and persistent crimes against humanity from the summer of 2024–of government-implemented curfews\, with “shoot-on-sight” commands\, country-wide internet revoked\, houses raids\, innocent lives taken\, and unnecessary arrests made\, etc. After decades of corruption and nepotism\, Bangladeshi students stood up against the unjust quota system of prioritizing government positions rather than basing hiring on skill\, talent\, and merit–for descendants of ancestors prominent in the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971.

SUMMARY:Who Belongs? Stories Against a Narrowing World
DESCRIPTION:PEN America World Voices Festival closing night event!\n\n\nWho Belongs? Stories Against a Narrowing World\nAll PEN World Voices Festival tickets are non-refundable. Please confirm the time and location of your event before finalizing your purchase. \nGlobally\, political and cultural forces are aligning to narrowly define national identities. Surging book bans\, the outlawing of languages\, the erasure of histories from official records\, and the censorship of words increasingly limit who belongs and delineate who is other. Literature subverts that.  \nFor the festival’s closing night event\, PEN America President Dinaw Mengestu will convene prominent international writers to discuss how literature champions a diversity of cultures and reflects the multiple heritages\, customs\, and traditions we all carry. Joining Mengestu in this vital conversation are Tash Aw (The South)\, Susan Choi (Flashlight)\, and Madeleine Thien (The Book of Records).  \nCART caption is provided at this event. Captioning is being provided\, in part\, by a grant from NYSCA/TDF TAP Plus. \n\n\nThe 2026 PEN World Voices Festival is a celebration of world literature and free expression. SUMMARY:Beyond the Pages: How Ashley Lam bridges corporate success and cultural legacy through storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Ashley Lam is an Executive Director at BNP Paribas\, with 15 years of experience in financial technology\, compliance\, and operational risk. She’s also the author of Wrapped with Love: Wonton Noodle Day with Grandma—a debut children’s picture book she created for her daughter and her mother\, all while raising three kids and without a publishing background. \nAshley didn’t write the book to change careers. She wrote it because the story she wanted to give her daughter didn’t exist yet. \nThis isn’t your average book talk; think of it as a live YouTube podcast with a business edge. To help tell Ashley’s story\, Sabeen Khan will lead the conversation. With a background in tech investment banking at Bank of America\, her own history of bold creative leaps as a beauty/wellness/tech startup co-founder and narrative builder at Refinery29\, Sabeen knows how to peel back the layers of Ashley’s personal and professional journey.

SUMMARY:Book Talk: In Celebration of Abundance
DESCRIPTION:Join AAWW for a celebration of Hafeez Lakhani’s Abundance\, featuring Victor Suthammanont!\n\n\nJoin AAWW for a celebration of Hafeez Lakhani’s Abundance\, featuring Victor Suthammanont! \n_ \nIn suburban Miami\, sixty-year-old Sakeena—co-owner of a Dunkin’ franchise along with her husband\, Ramzan—has nine months to live unless she consents to an organ transplant. Thirty years ago\, at Ramzan’s behest\, she left her beloved Rawalpindi\, India\, for the United States. In the years that followed\, she compromised her belief in naseeb\, the Muslim notion of destiny\, and acquiesced to fertility treatments. This time\, she is adamant that she should live as intended—without medical intervention. As her health deteriorates\, Ramzan desperately seeks to reunite their grown children with the hope of convincing Sakeena to extend her life. \nBut there are complications. Eldest daughter Fareen is consumed by an important business deal that\, if successful\, will land her a highly desired (and lucrative) promotion. Meanwhile\, youngest son Adnan is living abroad and unable to return to the States due to his own unscrupulous business practices\, a pattern stretching back to his adolescence. If they have any hope of saving their mother’s life\, the siblings must take extraordinary action to wrestle with their life choices\, actions that reveal the always-present tension between ambition and fate. \nBrought to life by prose that captures the spirit of contemporary Miami as effortlessly as it conveys the challenges of running a Dunkin’ franchise\, Abundance is a beautiful\, moving read from an exciting new American voice. \nHafeez Lakhani was born in Hyderabad\, India\, and raised in suburban South Florida. His fiction and essays have appeared in Crazyhorse\, Exposition Review\, Salt Hill Journal\, Tikkun\, The Cortland Review\, and The Southern Review\, among other publications. He has received fellowships from PEN America and the Center for Fiction\, has been recognized twice with a Notable Essay in Best American Essays\, and has been nominated twice for a Pushcart Prize. \nVictor Suthammanont is a lawyer and author. Hollow Spaces is his debut novel. He lives in New York City. \n_ \nCOMMUNITY CARE & ACCESSIBILITY \nAt AAWW\, the safety and comfort of our community is our top priority. We invite you to practice intentionality and care in your behavior and language when engaging with our programs and with each other. Violence of any kind\, including but not limited to racism\, sexism\, homophobia\, transphobia\, ableism\, ageism\, class or casteism\, bigotry or bias toward religion or faith\, or any action or assault against marginalized identities\, is not tolerated. Those who bring harm to our community in person or online are not welcome\, and will be asked to exit the space. \nWe are located on the 9th floor of 18 W 21st Street (between 6th and 5th Avenues)\, there is an elevator that will take you directly to our office.

SUMMARY:Amader Dawat\, Apicha CHC\, DRUM Presents: "Elijah" (Screening & Discussion)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of “Elijah”\, a coming-out story of a Bengali-American trans man. Followed by a Q+A with filmmaker\, Razid Season!\n\n\nSypnosis: A South Asian Muslim taxi driver faces the reality that the American Dream may never be his. Grueling hours\, rude customers\, a collapse in medallion values\, and suicides among fellow drivers continually chip away at his hope for the future. Against this backdrop\, crisis spills into his family as his child comes out as a transgender man. His relationship with his transgender son challenges his past views on LGBTQ issues\, forcing him to confront prejudice in his community to protect the child he loves.\n\nWe’ll be screening this beautiful film\, followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker\, Razid. Refreshments will be provided. \nAbout Us:\nRazid Season: Born in Abu Dhabi & raised in Dhaka\, Razid Season is a Bengali filmmaker based in New York. He is the founder of a non-profit\, Image Maker Films Inc. Besides\, he has worked as a freelance project evaluator for POV. He was an invited jury at the Plural+ Youth Film Festival 2022\, run by UNAOC and IOM. He has received several awards for his films\, including the Lawrence and Danielle Nyman award (2018 & 2019)\, the Best Director award from SAIFF 2020\, Honourable Mention from Columbus Jewish Film Festival 2020\, and ISA Los Angeles. His films have premiered at the 43rd Asian American Film Festival in New York\, the Buffalo International Film Festival\, the Williamsburg International Film Festival\, and the Los Angeles Polish Film Festival. His film premiered on CUNY TV\, Yiddishkayt Initiative\, and The Archeological Channel’s web streaming. His film Kaddish ranked as one of the top 10 independent short fiction works by Cinema Daily US. Razid is interested in making films that deal with humanitarian issues\, and he wants his films to be a tool to advocate for those underprivileged communities whose voices are not heard in the mainstream media. \nAmader Dawat is a Bangladeshi and Bengali queer and trans led grassroots collective based in NYC. Rooted in radical care and the tradition of dawaats (gatherings)\, we aim to foster community\, connection\, and empowerment by standing with all oppressed people. We strive to build celebratory and safe spaces by synergizing arts\, culture\, and political education. Our core mission is queer liberation–we firmly believe no one is free until we are all free. \nApicha Community Health Center is a Federally Qualified Health Center. Their mission is to provide high quality\, whole person\, and compassionate care delivered in a welcoming manner. \nDesis Rising Up and Moving is a multi-generational\, membership based organization of over 1\,800 low-wage South Asian immigrant workers\, youth\, and families organizing for social and economic justice in New York City.
