SUMMARY:Author Talk: Have You Eaten Yet?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Cheuk Kwan\, director and producer of the 15 part documentary series\, “Chinese Restaurants” on YouTube and author of “Have You Eaten Yet?” a book inspired by his series. Before Anthony Bourdain’s “A Cook’s Tour”\, there was Cheuk Kwan’s\, “Chinese Restaurants.” He traveled for 4 years to unexpected places in the world of the Chinese diaspora. \nCheuk will share the stories of Chinese immigrants found in unexpected places in the world.  From the Amazon River in Brazil to Israel; to Norway\, the land of the midnight sun and one of the few Chinese restaurants within the Arctic Circle; to Cape Town’s first Chinese restaurant to the oldest one in Istanbul. Running a restaurant is the easiest path for the Chinese immigrants to integrate into a new community and get on their feet. Through the lens of food\, they shared their stories with Cheuk – stories of courage\, survival and hope. Each story is unique and at the same time\, very familiar to our own immigrant story. \nWe will also have a drawing for 3 signed books at the end of the webinar.  Winner must be present.

DESCRIPTION:A comedy play that looks into the dynamic of an interracial family\, as they welcome a newborn baby\, and the Asian mother-in-law joins.\n\n\nWhat does your family dynamic look like? How does it shift when a new member joins the picture? What about in an interracial family? The Museum of Chinese in America is pleased to collaborate with playwright Rachel Chin to present a staged reading of her new play\, Mountain Mom. This play follows the couple Grace and Salim as they welcome a newborn baby. When Grace’s Malaysian-Chinese mother comes to the United States to stay with them\, Salim\, who is African American\, must navigate the perils of cross-cultural communication. This reading will be followed by a Q&A session. \nABOUT Playwright Rachel Chin\nRachel Chin is a Malaysian-born Chinese playwright and actor based in Illinois. She is a nominee for the Playwrights’ Center’s upcoming Venturous Playwright Fellowship\, and an inaugural resident of the Centre 42 Playwright’s Professional Development Residency\, a Veda Mekani performing arts scholarship recipient\, and a founding member of the sketch comedy group Otters United FC. SUMMARY:Top Chef’s Kristen Kish in Conversation with Stacy London: Accidentally on Purpose
DESCRIPTION:The pivotal moments in Kristen Kish’s life are chronicled on her tattooed arms — arms that can barely contain the moments and now also reflect an Emmy nomination. \nKish’s unlikely trajectory — born in South Korea and adopted into a family in Michigan\, a meteoric rise in the culinary world that took her from Top Chef contestant and winner to the full-circle moment of becoming the show’s host — has been full of unexpected turns. But as she reveals in her deeply personal new memoir\, Accidentally on Purpose\, it’s in the unplanned moments that life truly takes shape. Kish joins us with stylist\, fashion designer\, author and friend Stacy London to talk about the book and the backstory of her journey in food and in life\, about coming out and finding love\, and more. And she shares the lessons she has learned along the way: there is no map\, accidents happen\, curveballs come\, be open. \n“She’s written a recipe for a life worth living: with purpose\, curiosity\, forgiveness\, luck\, and of course—what every recipe relies on—love.” ― Stacy London\, co-host Wear Whatever the F You Want on Amazon Prime

SUMMARY:Theorizing Liberation: Third Worldism and the Legacy of Gary Okihiro
DESCRIPTION:The Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race (CSER) invites you to “Theorizing Liberation: Third Worldism and the Legacy of Gary Okihiro at CSER\,” a gathering in honor of the legacy of CSER’s founding director\, Gary Okihiro (1945-2024)\, who passed away in May of last year. \nGary served as CSER’s director from the Center’s formation in 1999 until 2007. He laid the groundwork for CSER to become Columbia’s only hub for comparative and interdisciplinary analysis of ethnicity\, race\, and Indigeneity\, nationally recognized for its academic initiatives and transformative scholarship. CSER now serves over 100 undergraduate majors\, minors\, and M.A. students a year. \nGary’s 2016 book\, Third World Studies: Theorizing Liberation (Duke University Press)\, contends that contemporary Ethnic Studies has fallen short of its original mandate\, which emphasized the interconnectedness of the struggles of all Third World peoples. This event brings together five of Gary’s former students\, several of whom studied with him during his years at CSER\, and went on to become accomplished scholars in the field. \nOur panelists will reflect on the histories of CSER and the field of Ethnic Studies more broadly\, Gary’s scholarly contributions\, and the prospect of Third World studies. In doing so\, they will be engaging in “a work of imagination\,” envisioning possible futures for Ethnic Studies at Columbia and beyond.

SUMMARY:Emily Feng on Identity in Xi’s China
DESCRIPTION:Conformity is a prized commodity in the Xi Jinping era. And for those who don’t conform — to the Party narrative\, or to a narrow definition of what it means to be “Chinese” — the state attempts to conform them\, through pressure\, censorship or detention. \nThis battle over identity in China is the core theme of Let Only Red Flowers Bloom: Identity and Belonging in Xi Jinping’s China (Crown\, March 2025)\, a reported investigation of state oppression and grassroots push-back\, from award-winning NPR correspondent Emily Feng. Based on her journalism on the ground\, the book narrates the stories of varied individuals in China who run against the grain of society: a Uyghur family split apart by detention camps; human rights lawyers fighting to defend civil liberties; a teacher from Inner Mongolia fighting for his mother tongue; and a Hong Kong fugitive trying to find a new home.

SUMMARY:An Open Space for the Children of Asian Fathers
DESCRIPTION:Why Are You The Way That You Are? An Open Space for the Children of Asian Fathers \nHave you ever gotten into a tiff with your Asian father and thought\, much like Michael Scott once did: why are you the way that you are? Do you feel like you’ve spent decades of your life trying to make sense of the unique psychology of your Asian father to little avail? Do you just need an open\, honest\, and affirming space to reflect on the nature of Asian fathers and fatherhood from the perspective of their Asian offspring? Then this session is for you. \nJoin Nairuti\, fellow child of an Asian father\, for an hour of: \n\nprocessing our unique relationship to our Asian fathers;\nfinding solace in community for said relationships’ joys and challenges; and\nideally\, co-visioning a world in which Asian fatherhood can be something more poignant than a bowl of cut fruit.\n\nInstructor Bio: \nBorn and raised in Ahmedabad\, Gujarat\, Nairuti is a proud descendent of care workers and revolutionaries who fought for Indian independence in the early-mid 20th century. It is this very spirit that informs her work as a researcher\, educator\, and practical radical. Prior to joining the Center for Economic Democracy as the organization’s inaugural Director of Policy & Research\, Nairuti spent eight years as a movement operative supporting anchor institutions to realize their potential\, driving national narrative change campaigns\, organizing resource-holders (and holding them to account)\, accelerating community wealth building activity\, and more. Ultimately\, Nairuti dreams of a world where community is at the heart of our political\, economic\, and social systems.

SUMMARY:MOCA COOKS - Taiwanese & Taiwanese American Cuisine
DESCRIPTION:Professor Paoyi Huang to share her research on the roots and evolution of Taiwanese and Taiwanese American cuisine.\n\n\nDid you know that bubble tea originated in Taiwan? When you think of Taiwanese cuisine\, what comes to mind? In recent years\, Taiwanese food has gained widespread popularity\, with a surge of restaurants such as A-Pou’s Tastes\, 886\, Ho Foods\, Win Son\, and Wenwen\, among others. Before this wave\, long-time favorites like Taiwan Pork Chop House and Taiwan Bear House had already established themselves in Manhattan’s Chinatown. But what exactly defines Taiwanese cuisine? \nMOCA COOKS: Taiwanese and Taiwanese American Cuisine invites Professor Paoyi Huang to share her research on the roots and evolution of Taiwanese and Taiwanese American food. This program will explore the migration history of the Taiwanese people and examine how Taiwanese identity has evolved over the past few decades. We will also discuss the rise of Taiwanese restaurants in New York City and the factors driving their recent boom in popularity. Owners of Taiwanese restaurants will join us to share their stories and perspectives. \nTo enhance the experience\, participants will be treated to a selection of Taiwanese light bites\, snacks\, and beverages. \nABOUT Paoyi Huang\nPaoyi Huang is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC). Her research spans migration\, gender\, and education\, with a focus on how structural and cultural forces shape everyday experiences. Her dissertation project was an ethnographic study examining gender dynamics and ethnic tensions within cross-border marriages between Chinese women and Taiwanese men. Since joining BMCC\, her scholarship has expanded to include carework\, pedagogy\, and the experiences of community college students\, such as research on challenges they faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently\, she is excited to explore the intersection of identity\, nation branding\, and the transformation of the Taiwanese food landscape in the New York metropolitan area. \n*MOCA members are required to present their MOCA ID at check-in.

SUMMARY:Chinese American Excellence in Business & STEM
DESCRIPTION:Join Committee of 100 and The Asian American Education Project for a three-part series examining the rich contributions of Chinese Americans to U.S. society\, both historically and in the present day. The content was sourced from Committee of 100’s report “From Foundations to Frontiers: Chinese American Contributions to the Fabric of America.” \nChinese Americans have found success in the fields of business and entrepreneurship and science and technology. Their ability to thrive in these industries has been impacted by immigration policy at different moments in American history\, yet Chinese Americans have found ways to adapt and survive. In this workshop\, participants will learn about early Chinese American contributions to business and STEM\, and how they made progress in later decades up to the present. Participants will gain classroom resources for teaching these contributions in the classroom. \nThis workshop will be offered twice on Thursday\, March 27  at 1pm and 7pm EST to accommodate educators in different time zones. Each session will present the same content. \nThis workshop series is facilitated by Ashley Chu from The Asian American Education Project.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Jinwoo Chong on I Leave It Up To You\, In Conversation With Grant Ginder
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Brooklyn Heights Library to hear Jinwoo Chong discuss his new novel I Leave It Up to You with Grant Ginder.\nFrom the award-winning author of Flux comes a dazzling novel about love\, family\, and the art of sushi that asks: What if you could return to the point of a fateful choice\, wiser than before\, and find the courage to forge a new path? \nA coma can change a man\, but the world Jack Jr. awakens to is one he barely recognizes. His advertising job is history\, his Manhattan apartment is gone\, and the love of his life has left him behind. He’s been asleep for two years; with no one to turn to\, he realizes it’s been ten years since he last saw his family. \nLost and disoriented\, he makes a reluctant homecoming back to the bustling Korean American enclave of Fort Lee\, New Jersey; back into the waiting arms of his parents\, who are operating under the illusion he never left; and back to Joja\, their ever-struggling sushi restaurant that he was set to inherit before he ran away from it all. As he steps back into the life he abandoned—learning his Appa’s life lessons over crates of tuna on bleary-eyed 4 AM fish runs\, doling out amberjack behind the omakase counter while his Umma tallies the night’s pitiful number of customers\, and sparring with his recovering alcoholic brother\, James—he embraces new roles\, too: That of romantic interest to the male nurse who took care of him throughout\, and that of sage (but underqualified) uncle to his gangly teenage nephew. \nWhy do we run from those we love\, and why do we still love those who run from us? A highly entertaining and poignant story about second chances and self-discovery\, I Leave It Up to You navigates loss\, love\, and the absurdity of finding one’s footing after the ground gives way. \n\nJinwoo Chong is the author of the novel Flux\, a New York Times Editor’s Choice\, a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award for Debut Novel and the VCU Cabell First Novelist Award\, and named a best book of 2023 by Apple Books\,  Amazon Books\, Esquire\, HuffPost\, GQ\, Cosmopolitan\, and Goodreads. His work has appeared in Guernica\, The Southern Review\, The Rumpus\, LitHub\, Chicago Quarterly Review\, and Electric Literature. He lives in New York with his husband and cat. \nGrant Ginder is the author of the novels Let’s Not Do That Again\, Honestly\, We Meant Well\, The People We Hate at the Wedding\, Driver’s Education\, and This is How It Starts. Originally from Southern California\, he studied at the University of Pennsylvania and received his MFA from NYU\, where he currently teaches writing. He lives in Brooklyn with his husband\, Mac\, and their disastrous dog\, Frankie.
