SUMMARY:Town Hall: A Readout of New Data on Health Risks & Air Quality Levels of Chinatown’s Megajail
DESCRIPTION:As the excavation and construction phases of the Manhattan Borough-Based “Megajail” begin\, there are growing concerns in Chinatown of a repeat of the issues present throughout the demolition phase. This time\, the air\, noise\, and vibration issues will persist for several years. \nFollowing a previous town hall with Neighbors United Below Canal\, which examined the health and environmental risks posed by the demolition phase\, we are reconvening the community on Aug 13th from 6 to 8 PM at The Hub to continue the conversation and to look ahead in preparation for the construction phase. Our panel will discuss findings from a recent air quality monitoring study conducted during the megajail’s demolition phase\, and share experiences advocating for improved safety measures and how we can fight together for better solutions. \nLimited seating — RSVP via the link to reserve your spot.

SUMMARY:Film: Kyoko Kagawa Rarities: Little Peach / Anzukko
DESCRIPTION:Asia Society presents Kyoko Kagawa Rarities\, a series of five remarkable films starring the beloved Japanese actress\, in partnership with Anthology Film Archives\, from August 13-16\, 2026. \nDiscovered in a “New Face” contest run by the Tokyo Shimbun in 1949\, Kyoko Kagawa joined upstart film studio Shintoho at age 17\, initiating a steady stream of appearances that would establish in her image an aptitude for projecting brightness and “pure feeling.” Going freelance early in her career in 1952\, she would quickly become a staple of Japanese Cinema’s Golden Age\, becoming immortalized especially as the youngest daughter in the Yasujiro Ozu masterpiece Tokyo Story (1953). With the distinction of working with all of Japan’s “Big Four” directors (Ozu\, Kenji Mizoguchi\, Akira Kurosawa\, and Mikio Naruse) and many more of its greats (Hiroshi Shimizu\, Kozaburo Yoshimura\, Hirokazu Kore-eda\, to name a few)\, and in a career spanning over 70 years and 130 films\, Kagawa’s filmography can read like a roadmap to Japan’s cinema\, her characters meaningful guides in its living history. \nThe greatness in Kagawa’s filmography overflows\, but many of her most widely-circulated roles are in support of other leads or larger ensembles. Composed entirely of imported celluloid\, “Kyoko Kagawa Rarities” looks at the rich history from another vantage point\, and puts Kagawa\, deservedly\, in the center lane. Highlighting discovery and revelation (special mention for the U.S. premiere of Farewell to the Highland Station)\, and postulating a new set of classics\, the series looks to give fresh color to this dear and familiar face. —Joseph Eusebio \n“I am truly delighted and grateful that audiences in New York will have the opportunity to see this selection of films in which I appeared as part of this special retrospective. New York holds a special place in my heart\, as I once lived there for about three years because of my husband’s work\, and I remember the city with great fondness. I was still young in some of these films\, but I hold deep gratitude for the exceptional source material and for the guidance of the distinguished directors with whom I was fortunate enough to work. It is thanks to them that these films endure and can continue to be met by audiences today. I hope that you will enjoy watching the different ways in which each of the women in these films chooses to live her life. “ —Kyoko Kagawa\, June 2026 \nNote: The first film in this series\, Mikio Naruse’s Little Peach (Anzukko)\, will screen at Anthology Film Archives on August 13\, 2026. Click here for information and tickets.  \nGuest curated by Joseph Eusebio and Akinaru Rokkaku. \nProgrammed with support from the Japan Foundation\, New York.

SUMMARY:Film: Farewell to the Highland Station
DESCRIPTION:Asia Society presents Kyoko Kagawa Rarities\, a series of five remarkable films starring the beloved Japanese actress\, in partnership with Anthology Film Archives\, from August 13-16\, 2026. \nFarewell to the Highland Station\nNobuo Nakagawa\, Japan\, 1951\, 35mm\, 76 min.\nIn Japanese with English subtitles. \nA botanical researcher (Michitaro Mizushima) visits a tuberculosis sanatorium in the highlands. Collecting plants in the area for his research\, he falls in love with the nurse in white (Kyoko Kagawa). \nProduced quickly to capitalize on the massive success of Minoru Obata’s hit song of the same title\, within the genre trappings of the “kayo eiga” (song film)\, Farewell to the Highland Station elevates to the sublime under the masterful direction of Nobuo Nakagawa. Known in most histories exclusively for his classics of the horror genre\, legendary critic Shiguehiko Hasumi has explained that Nakagawa is indistinguishable without this film. Something similar could also be said about Kagawa: that if this film were known\, her role in it as the young nurse would likely be amongst her most iconic. \nA revelatory film\, newly subtitled on the occasion of this series\, for what is believed to be its U.S. premiere. —Joseph Eusebio \n35mm print courtesy of the National Film Archive of Japan. \nA limited amount of complimentary tickets will be available to NYC college students with ID at the box office on the day of the screening.

SUMMARY:Book Launch for Catherine Cho's The Devoted with Vanessa Chan
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a release event with acclaimed author Catherine Cho\, discussing her new novel The Devoted. Moderating this discussion is internationally bestselling author Vanessa Chan. This event will be hosted in the Strand Book Store’s 3rd floor Rare Book Room at 828 Broadway on 12th Street. \nIn this emotionally transportive literary debut about family and fate\, a young Korean woman becomes entrenched in an infamous crime organization—and the dangerous world she once sought to escape. \n\n\n\nRaised in Hong Kong by their Korean grandmother in a quiet village\, Eunha and her brother Solomon live a sheltered life. Their father is a Dragon Head\, a leader within the infamous criminal organization of the Triads. While their beloved grandmother does her best to shield the children from the constant hum of violence and fear that surrounds their father and his world\, Eunha only has Solomon and their one permitted companion\, a boy named Kai\, for company. \nBut as Eunha grows up and marries into a supposedly respectable Hong Kong family\, the veneer of her careful life begins to crack. When her young son is kidnapped\, she is cast into the city’s criminal underground and back into the orbit of Kai\, now a Dragon Head himself. \nWill Eunha finally give in to the life she has strived so hard to rise above or was her future always fated?\nThe Devoted is at once a sweeping family drama\, a moving account of forbidden love\, and a story about a woman’s determination to choose her own destiny. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCatherine Cho is the acclaimed author of The Devoted and the memoir Inferno. She was shortlisted for The Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year 2020 and shortlisted for the Jhalak Prize. Catherine also runs her own literary agency Paper Literary. Originally from the United States\, she now lives with her family in London. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVanessa Chan is the Malaysian author of internationally bestselling The Storm We Made\, a Good Morning America Book Club Pick\, BBC Radio 2 Book Club pick\, and New York Times Editor’s Choice. The novel\, her first\, will be translated into more than twenty languages worldwide. Her other work has been published in Vogue\, Esquire\, and more.

SUMMARY:Chinatown '75 Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:CHINATOWN ‘75 is an interactive walking tour that tells the story of the police brutality case that rocked Chinatown and the protest movement that arose in its wake. In May of 1975\, 25\,000 protesters marched from Chinatown to City Hall to demand justice for the beating of Peter Yew. \nBased on archival research and oral histories with march participants\, CHINATOWN ‘75 traces the route of the original Peter Yew protest march to paint an in-depth portrait of a transformative moment in Chinatown’s history. We’ll explore how the interactions between radical social movements\, community organizations\, and the NYPD shaped the ensuing demonstrations\, and how the iconic photographs of the march came to symbolize a generation of Asian American activism. \nImportant: The meeting location is the south side of Canal Street and Elizabeth Street. The ending location is Foley Square. Tour runs rain or shine. \nDate and Time: 8/15 at 2:00 PM\, 8/16 at 11:00 AM\nTIckets: $28.52 Student/Senior\, $33.85 General \nTours will be led by Dr. Michael Menor Salgarolo\, a New York City-based historian\, walking tour guide\, retired stand-up comedian\, and founder of UNASSIMILATED Walking Tours. He holds a PhD in History from NYU and is now an Assistant Professor of History at Bard College. \nThis walk is presented by UNASSIMILATED Walking Tours and Think!Chinatown\, as part of the 2026 Chinatown Storytelling Festival. \nUNASSIMILATED is a walking tour company that crafts unique narrative experiences to tell a people’s history of Asian America. SUMMARY:Chunxiang: a Queer Musical
DESCRIPTION:This August\, join us for the first public presentation of Chunxiang: A Queer Musical\, an original Mandarin musical inspired by The Peony Pavilion. \nABOUT THIS WORKSHOP \nThis event is a work-in-progress staged musical reading workshop featuring the first half of the musical. It is not a complete production or a fully staged performance. \nThrough live readings and musical performances\, audiences will have an early opportunity to experience the world\, characters\, and music of the piece as it continues to take shape. \nThe presentation will be followed by a conversation with the creative team. We invite audience members to share their responses\, questions\, and ideas. Your feedback will become part of the musical’s ongoing development. \nRather than simply attending a finished performance\, you are being invited into the creative process and helping us discover what this story may become. \nABOUT THE MUSICAL \nChunxiang: a queer musical is an original Chinese-language musical reimagining the Ming-dynasty classic The Peony Pavilion through a queer-feminist lens. The piece blends the lyricism of Chinese opera with the emotional immediacy of contemporary musical theatre\, exploring desire\, death\, and rebirth across time. \nAt its heart is the belief that queerness is not a modern invention\, but as old as human longing itself. By restoring queer voices within canonical texts\, the work bridges tradition and the present\, offering both continuity and new ways of seeing. \nThis August in Flushing\, join us for a work-in-progress musical reading workshop\, and become part of the musical’s development. \nLanguage: Mandarin Chinese with EN supertitles \nWhether you’re a theatre lover\, a fan of new musicals\, or simply curious about new stories\, we‘d love to have you with us at this early stage of the journey. \n📅 Saturday\, August 15\, 2026\n🕒 2:00–4:00 PM\n🏠 Glow Cultural Center\n📍 133-29 41st Ave\, Flushing\, NY\n🗣️ Performed in Mandarin Chinese with English supertitles\n🎟️ Donation-based RSVP

SUMMARY:Film: Five Sisters
DESCRIPTION:Asia Society presents Kyoko Kagawa Rarities\, a series of five remarkable films starring the beloved Japanese actress\, in partnership with Anthology Film Archives\, from August 13-16\, 2026. \nFive Sisters\nSeiji Hisamatsu\, Japan\, 1954\, 35mm\, 100 min.\nIn Japanese with English subtitles. \nSeiji Hisamatsu’s buoyant shomin-geki (“common-people’s drama”) adapts Sakae Tsuboi’s short story collection A Calendar the same year that Keisuke Kinoshita was filming the author’s better-known Twenty-Four Eyes (1954). Set on the same island within the Seto Inland Sea\, Five Sisters interrogates marriage in a contemporary Japan amidst the lively and dynamic sisterhood of the Hinata family. \nWith Kinuyo Tanaka as Michi\, the eldest\, and a great Yoko Sugi as the spirited Kuniko\, Kagawa plays Mie\, the youngest and the heart of the distinguished ensemble. Harboring vigor and youth in one of the clearest distillations of her predominant screen persona (emblematized by the prior year’s Tokyo Story)\, Kagawa stretches the canvas further in this memorable leading role given life amidst an atmospheric beauty rivaling the aforementioned films. —Joseph Eusebio \n35mm print courtesy of the National Film Archive of Japan. \nA limited amount of complimentary tickets will be available to NYC college students with ID at the box office on the day of the screening.

SUMMARY:Eastwind Summer Book Club: Orphan Bachelors by Fae Myenne Ng(Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our second annual Summer Book Club where we’ll be discussing Fae Myenne Ng’s intimate and striking memoir Orphan Bachelors!\n\n\nJoin us for an heartfelt discussion on Orphan Bachelors\, the Fae Myenne Ng’s award-winning memoir on being a confession baby\, Chinatown daughter\, baa-bai sister\, caretaker of exotics\, literary balloon peddler\, and grand historian of a doomed American family. \nPlease RSVP for the Zoom link. This will be a virtual event\, so come in your comfiest clothes and have your favorite snacks on hand. We encourage you to finish the book before the event\, but you’re more than welcome to join us no matter how far you’ve read. We look forward to seeing you! \nThere is also a special book club sale for the book on our website. The paperback is $5 off for book club attendees! \nAbout the Book \nIn pre-Communist China\, Fae Myenne Ng’s father memorized a book of lies and gained entry to the United States as a stranger’s son\, evading the Exclusion Act\, an immigration law which he believed was meant to extinguish the Chinese American family. During the McCarthy era\, he entered the Confession Program in a failed attempt to salvage his marriage only to have his citizenship revoked to resident alien. Exclusion and Confession\, America’s two slamming doors. As Ng’s father said\, “America didn’t have to kill any Chinese\, the Exclusion Act ensured none would be born.” \nNg was her parents’ precocious first born\, the translator\, the bossy eldest sister. A child raised by a seafaring father and a seamstress mother\, by San Francisco’s Chinatown and its legendary Orphan Bachelors — men without wives or children\, Exclusion’s living legacy. She and her siblings were their stand-in descendants\, Ng’s family grocery store their haven. \nEach Orphan Bachelor bequeathed the children their true American inheritance. Ng absorbed their suspicious\, lonely\, barren nature; she found storytelling and chosen children in the form of her students. Exclusion’s legacy followed her from the back alleys of Chinatown in the 60s\, to Manhattan in the 80s\, to the high desert of California in the 90s\, until her return home in the 2000s when the untimely deaths of her youngest brother and her father devastated the family. A a child\, Ng believed her father’s lies; as an adult\, she returned to her childhood home to write his truth.Orphan Bachelors weaves together the history of one family\, lucky to exist and nevertheless doomed; an elegy for brothers estranged and for elders lost; and insights into writing between languages and teaching between generations. It also features Cantonese profanity\, snakes that cure fear and opium that conquers sorrow\, and a seemingly immortal creep of tortoises. In this powerful remembrance\, Fae Myenne Ng gives voice to her valiant ancestors\, her bold and ruthless Orphan Bachelors\, and her own inner self\, howling in Cantonese\, impossible to translate but determined to be heard.

SUMMARY:Film: Shozo\, a Cat and Two Women
DESCRIPTION:Asia Society presents Kyoko Kagawa Rarities\, a series of five remarkable films starring the beloved Japanese actress\, in partnership with Anthology Film Archives\, from August 13-16\, 2026. \nShozo\, a Cat and Two Women\nShiro Toyoda\, Japan\, 1956\, 35mm\, 135 min.\nIn Japanese with English subtitles. \nShiro Toyoda\, known as a master of prestige literary adaptations\, turns to the text of literary giant Jun’ichiro Tanizaki for this wry and award-winning comedy of domestic strife. Why should Shozo pay heed to his new wife or his ex when the sweet purrs of Lily the cat are what makes his heart flutter? \nThe film’s titular quadrangle\, like a prism\, magnifies the competing impulses towards modernity\, tradition\, and escape. Popular comic veteran Hisaya Morishige plays the hapless Shozo\, while screen legend Isuzu Yamada plays kimono-clad ex-wife Shinako. Bursting out of a closet in full beach attire\, Kagawa is introduced as the mambo-crazed moga (modern girl) Fukuko. Cast far against type\, and to great dramatic effect\, Kagawa goes toe to toe in competitive frenzy with her acting role model\, Yamada\, in a performance praised by Tanizaki himself. —Joseph Eusebio \n35mm print courtesy of the Japan Foundation.  \nA limited amount of complimentary tickets will be available to NYC college students with ID at the box office on the day of the screening.
