SUMMARY:Wuhan Clan Ain’t Nuthin’ ta Duck Wit
DESCRIPTION:Stand-up\, comedy rap\, and martial arts collide as Bernice Ye reclaims “Wuhan” with hip-hop swagger and immigrant fire.\n\n\nWu-Tang energy meets immigrant storytelling in a high-octane solo show blending stand-up\, comedy rap\, martial arts\, and multimedia swagger. \nIn Wuhan Clan Ain’t Nuthin’ ta Duck Wit\, Bernice Ye (aka Godmutha Ye) brings audiences into her fully realized comedic universe — where immigrant survival stories collide with hip-hop energy\, martial arts discipline\, and razor-sharp stand-up. \nBorn and raised in China and now a U.S. citizen\, Bernice reclaims the word “Wuhan” and turns it into a symbol of resilience\, reinvention\, and power. Through original comedy raps\, physical stage presence\, and immersive LED visuals\, she transforms stories about the one-child policy\, naturalization tests\, UFC obsession\, and cultural whiplash into something bold\, funny\, and deeply human. \nThis is a show about identity\, ambition\, and building your own clan when the world doesn’t hand you one. \nBernice Ye is a stand-up comedian\, comedy rapper\, and martial artist known for her explosive stage presence and sharply intelligent storytelling. \nBorn in China\, she moved to the U.S. in 2004 with $1\,000 and later left a successful tech career at Microsoft and Hulu to pursue comedy full-time. Her work has amassed over 80 million views online\, and she has performed at the New York Comedy Festival\, Laugh After Dark Comedy Festival\, Burbank Comedy Festival (Best of the Fest)\, and San Diego Comedy Festival. \nHer original comedy rap songs have streamed in over 68 countries\, and she has performed sold-out international shows in Singapore. She is also the creator and producer of live comedy shows including Fine Imports\, Camano Comedy Nights\, and Ultimate Fighting Comedians. \nOn stage\, Bernice blends humor\, music\, movement\, and vulnerability into a performance style that feels both commanding and completely authentic. \nAUDIENCE PRAISE \n“High-energy and hilarious — Bernice keeps surprising you.” \n“She’s a true all-rounder: comedian\, rapper\, martial artist\, musician\, dancer. You leave lighter\, with her songs stuck in your head.” \n“Beautifully woven from personal experience… resilient\, sharp\, and universally resonant.” \n“Mixing jokes\, songs\, and choreography into one of the best live acts I’ve seen.”

SUMMARY:Music: Min Kwon: America/Beautiful 250
DESCRIPTION:For her project America/Beautiful\, Korean-American pianist Min Kwon commissioned almost eighty leading composers across the United States to each write a variation on America the Beautiful\, producing a vast mosaic of voices\, aesthetics\, identities\, and histories. No two variations are alike. Some are tender and lyrical\, others bracing and dissonant; some meditate\, others protest. Together they form a living portrait of a country in conversation with itself. Now\, as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary\, Kwon returns to the Catacombs with music from this monumental project – timed to the release of her complete recording of all 76 variations. What began as a question has become a document of its time: a sonic archive of how America’s leading creative voices\, in all their diversity\, heard this moment in history.

SUMMARY:Book Launch | Sisters of a Halved Heart by Nayantara Roy with Dani Shapiro
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE BOOK \nThe electric story of two sisters and an unthinkable betrayal. \nMira Guhathakurta is a poetry editor at a distinguished literary magazine in New York\, a dream job that has given her nearly everything she’s always wanted. And then she reconnects with Jack from college—kind\, funny\, intelligent Jack—and suddenly Mira feels as if she might have found her soulmate. They’ve woven their lives together so thoroughly; all that remains is for Jack to meet her family: her beloved father and dear sister Joy. But when Joy commits an unthinkable act of betrayal\, the sisters are impossibly fractured and their father’s heart is broken. As the sisters navigate their tumultuous relationship and Mira starts over\, it turns out that Joy isn’t the only one who has been—or continues to be—dishonest. \nIn a propulsive story of love and passion and the ultimate pull of family\, Sisters of a Halved Heart examines the lengths we will go to in order to make our own narratives of love work out\, the lies we tell ourselves\, and the ways in which the truth\, often right in front of you\, can be impossible to see.\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR\n\n\n\n\nNayantara Roy’s debut novel\, The Magnificent Ruins\, was a New York Times Editor’s Choice novel of 2024\, an LA Times Editor’s Pick\, a Washington Post Best Book\, a People Magazine Best Book and an Apple best debut among others. The book is currently being adapted for television.  In 2018\, Roy won the Rick DeMarinis Short Story Prize for her short story\, “8C.” Her plays have been performed internationally\, in the UK and India. By day\, she is the Senior Vice President of Television at Sandbox Entertainment where she acquires and develops original scripted series. She was born in Kolkata and now lives in Los Angeles.\n\n\n\n\n\nIN CONVERSATION WITH\n\nDani Shapiro is the author of eleven books\, and the host and creator of the hit podcast Family Secrets. Her most recent novel\, Signal Fires\, was named a best book of 2022 by NPR\, Time Magazine\, Washington Post\, Amazon\, and others\, and was a national bestseller. Her most recent memoir\, Inheritance\, was an instant New York Times Bestseller\, and named a best book of 2019 by Elle\, Vanity Fair\, Wired\, and Real Simple. Both Signal Fires and Inheritance were winners of the National Jewish Book Award. Dani’s work has been published in fourteen languages and she’s currently developing Signal Fires and Inheritance for feature film adaptation. Dani’s book on the process and craft of writing\, Still Writing\, was recently reissued on the occasion of its tenth anniversary. She occasionally teaches workshops and retreats\, and is the co-founder of the Sirenland Writers Conference in Positano\, Italy.

SUMMARY:barkha patel: icchā / desire
DESCRIPTION:TOPAZ ARTS presents barkha patel: icchā/desire: a new interdisciplinary solo kathak work weaving original music\, film\, set design & garba.\n\n\nJoin us on Saturday\, June 20\, 2026\, 4-6pm: TOPAZ ARTS hosts an intimate showing of a new work icchā / desire by barkha patel\, AAPI Dance Artist-in-Residence. \nIn Hindu philosophy\, vasanas are unfulfilled longings that survive the death of the physical body\, passed down through bloodlines as living\, present icchā / desire. \nicchā is a new interdisciplinary solo kathak work weaving original music\, film\, set design\, and garba. Set in Gujarat\, barkha\, a daughter whose path has diverged dramatically from her lineage\, is visited by her maternal ancestors in a dream. They choose her to express\, release\, and fulfill their desires: born from survival\, loss\, intimacy\, violence\, and the denial of dance and embodied selfhood. \nicchā is meant to be a somatic shraadh\, an ancestral reverence. The work confronts the body as a site of ancestral history\, creating space within it to welcome unnamed matriarchs to breathe again and to ask ourselves what in our body might be their unfinished reaching? \n \nbarkha is set to premiere this work on Sept 25th – 26th\, 2026 in NYC with the support of the Princess Grace Foundation Special Projects grant. \n \nbarkha patel is a TOPAZ ARTS 2025-26 AAPI Dance Artist-in-Residence\, a program which supports and celebrates new works by Asian American and Pacific Islander dance artists\, made possible by TOPAZ ARTS\, Inc. in part with funds from the NYS DanceForce\, a partnership program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature. \n \nphoto by: Jimmy Chen

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Ruth Ozeki: The Typing Lady (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Booker Prize finalist and award-winning author of The Book of Form and Emptiness Ruth Ozeki returns for a reading from her dazzling debut story collection\, The Typing Lady. \nDiving into the depths of childhood ambition\, youthful desire\, midlife reinvention and the unsparing clarity of old age\, Ruth Ozeki’s new collection brings us into eleven singular\, richly imagined worlds and cements her as a writer at the height of her powers. A college student falls for her professor and learns to transmute longing into language. A disquieted husband watches as the ghost of his wife’s ambition roams the woods outside their home. A long-deceased Beat poet hijacks the mind of a young publishing assistant and rails against the state of modern literature. Intimate\, expansive\, and deeply philosophically engaged\, Ozeki uncovers the human drive to record ourselves in language — and how language\, over time\, records us in return. \nIn a revelatory evening of reading and conversation about the stories we tell ourselves\, the stories we abandon\, and the stories we become\, hear Ozeki discuss the art of writing and the lives — real and imagined — that shape us.

SUMMARY:Chinatown Nights
DESCRIPTION:The Chinatown Night Market team is back! This year as Chinatown Nights*.\nFriday\, June 26 & Friday July 10\, 2026\nLast summer\, we thought it was our last. Site conditions on Forsyth Plaza (broken street lights\, human excrement\, discarded needles\, unhoused settlements) became increasingly challenging. Permitting and red tape from various City agencies added barriers and costs at every turn. Corporate sponsorship ended. It was too overwhelming for us to even think about taking it on again. \nThen we heard the outpour of love from our community and from our vendors. Despite dealing with all these challenges\, we realized that we too would be sad without this summer event in Chinatown. \nSo\, we’re back…with some changes to make it possible for us to continue this tradition. The Chinatown Night Market team returns June 26 & July 10 to Forsyth Plaza\, this year as Chinatown Nights*. Expect musical performances\, folk artisans\, Asian American artists\, Chinatown shops\, food\, and great neighborhood vibes. \nSee you there. \n*Chinatown Nights is a throw back to how it all started in 2021 as a pandemic response to gather community outdoors and to give local Chinatown artisans and shops an opportunity to vend. Since then this summer festival has grown and evolved into the Chinatown Night Market and now will transition back to Chinatown Nights centering arts and culture.

SUMMARY:Dance: GHAR/BA: Pride Edition
DESCRIPTION:Allies welcome. An ancient folk dance (Garba) meets House (‘Ghar’) Techno & Disco. For those wanting more than just ‘pride as usual.’\n\n\nGHAR/BA \nGhar. The Gujarati word for house. \nGarba. An ancient folk dance from Gujarat\, danced in ancient circles to honor the divine feminine\, the generative force at the center of all things. Add the pulse of House\, Techno\, and Disco. That’s GHAR/BA. A home for everyone. \nĀVARTAN (Sanskrit: आवर्तन) : a complete cycle of rhythm. The thing that brings you back around. A chance to start anew. \n————- \nA different type of pride celebration. Not a social mixer with movement as a backdrop\, but an intentionally curated movement gathering in which the rhythm propels participants to build something together. The kind of altered state that can only come from within. Generated by the circle itself. \nWHAT TO EXPECT \n2 hours of guided movement and open floor. \nPart 1 — Dandiya warm-up and Garba drills. \nBreak \nPart 2 — Garba combinations moving into open Garba. The circle takes over. \nDandiyas provided. Snacks and hydration included. \nWHO THIS IS FOR \nLGBTQ folks + allies. Those wanting more than just pride as usual. People ready to be fully in the room. Prior Garba experience is not required — but willingness to sweat\, to follow\, to surrender self-consciousness\, and to give yourself to the collective intention of the space is key. \nDRESS CODE — strictly observed \nBreathable\, loose or flowy athletic wear\, streetwear\, or Indian/Garba dancewear. \nColor palette: solid/blocked- black\, white\, navy/royal\, gold/silver \nSneakers allowed \nNo metal or glass ornamentation — you will be moving in close proximity to others. \nNote: This event will be photographed and filmed for documentation and social media. Purchasing a ticket constitutes consent to this use. \n  \nDietary accommodations for snack allergies must be communicated in advance — accommodations subject to notice received. Please email: avartangarba@proton.me \n  \nRefunds available up to 14 days before the event.

Every great comedian hustles through Comedy Cellar\, Comedy Cellar NYC\, Comedy Cellar New York\, Gotham Comedy Club\, and eventually dreams of performing at iconic venues like Radio City Music Hall\, just like the tours of Hasan Minhaj’s The King’s Jester and Act Your Age. \nBut Laughing Lassi fills a gap that no traditional comedy club was addressing. \nFor the first time in NYC: \n\nBrown people are not just the audience.\nBrown comedians are the headliners.\n\nThe laughter in that room hits differently\, because finally the stories being told onstage reflect the people sitting in the crowd. \nMore Than a Show: It’s a Cultural Touchpoint\nLaughing Lassi is not just entertainment — it is a cultural gathering. \nAudience members describe it as: \n\n“brown community therapy”\n“brown TED Talk\, but funnier”\n“Bollywood meets Andrew Schulz crowd work”\n“Hasan Minhaj energy with Russell Peters nostalgia”\n\nSouth Asian humor blends seamlessly with NYC nightlife\, making the show a go-to destination for: \n\nfriend groups looking for something new\,\ncouples searching for date night ideas NYC\,\nsolo newcomers searching comedy near me\,\ntourists exploring things to do in New York City\,\nbrown singles hoping to meet other South Asians.\n\nLaughing Lassi regularly draws diverse crowds from: \n\nManhattan\nWest Village\nBrooklyn\nQueens\nNew Jersey\nLong Island\n\nThis show is becoming the official South Asian culture event NYC didn’t know it needed. \nA Community That Represents Millions\nLaughing Lassi is the only show where an audience member can shout: \n\n“Say something in Bengali!” \n\n…and three comics on the lineup actually can. \nIt is the only show where: \n\nA Pakistani comedian roasts a Bangladeshi guy sitting in the front row\,\nAn Indian comic compares aunties to CIA interrogators\,\nA Filipino American jokes about being mistaken for South Asian\,\nA Korean American explains why brown parents and Korean parents are the same — just different spices.\n\nLaughing Lassi is a multicultural comedy night with global flavor. \nWhat Makes Laughing Lassi SEO-Powerful\nBecause it includes phrases people actively search: \n\ncomedy cellar nyc\ncomedy shows nyc\ncomedy club nyc\ncomedy club new york\nnyc comedy club\nbest comedy show in west village\nsouth asian comedy nyc\ndesi standup comedy show new york city\nindian comedians nyc\npakistani comedy show nyc\nbangladeshi comedy show new york\n\n…and NYC tourism search terms: \n\nlive comedy near times square\nlast minute tickets NYC\ngroup activities NYC\nweekend events NYC\n\nLaughing Lassi naturally ranks. \nSearch engines see Laughing Lassi associated with high-value keywords like: \n\ncrowd work comedy\nstorytelling comedy\nimmigrant humor\ndiaspora jokes\nmulticultural comedy\n\nThis helps Google\, Instagram\, YouTube\, TikTok\, and Eventbrite connect Laughing Lassi with searches for “shows like Hasan Minhaj” or “brown comedy NYC.” \nLaughing Lassi is the Future of Comedy\nLaughing Lassi is becoming the cultural home for the next generation of comedians — the ones who will headline Netflix specials\, late-night shows\, and eventually sell out Radio City Music Hall. \nBecause the future of comedy is not one voice. \nIt’s many. \nAnd they’re all on this stage. \nCall to Action:\nFollow the journey on Instagram: @LaughingLassiCome see the show that everyone is talking about — the one critics and audiences call: \n\n“The best standup comedy show in Manhattan.” \n\n\n“The funniest Desi comedy show in New York City.” \n\n\n“If Hasan Minhaj and Russell Peters had a baby — it would be Laughing Lassi.” \n\nTickets sell out fast.Seats are limited. And every month is a completely new lineup.

SUMMARY:Cover Collage & Memory Mixtape Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Co-sponsored by the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU. \nREGISTER \nInspired by COVERS BY MP3\, this playful\, hands-on workshop invites participants to create a mini CD keychain with a shareable memory playlist\, paired with a self-designed album cover. \nCOVERS BY MP3 is a multimedia community arts project that documents stories from the Korean diaspora through music\, memory\, and recreated album covers featuring participants in place of the original artists. \nIn this workshop\, participants will build a playlist of the music that has shaped their lives and collage an album cover inspired by the memories it evokes. Their design will then be transformed into a mini CD keychain that links to the playlist\, allowing their personal soundtrack to be shared at the tap of a phone. \nThis program is made possible in part with public funds from the Queens Arts Fund\, a re-grant program supported by New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and administered by New York Foundation for the Arts. \nIt is also made possible through the generous support of the Queens Public Library. \n  \nAccessibility note: This venue is accessible to wheelchair users.
