For the GSD\, he established the Real Estate Practicum as the new capstone requirement of the GSD’s Master in Real Estate (MRE) curriculum. The practicum\, which each student fulfills with a private\, public\, or non-profit real estate organization\, updates the paradigm for the MRE degree in that it advances a more holistic and contemporary approach to projects by which real estate development professionals can help to shape a more sustainable\, inclusive\, and vibrant future for their communities. For the American Academy in Rome\, he established three new scholarly programs. \n \nThe Tsao Family Rome Prize supports scholarship that illuminates the philosophical and existential ideas and questions that link eastern and western cultures\, drawing on the experience of Rome as a crossroads. These ideas and questions animate the world around us and are evident in art\, architecture\, design\, literature\, and even the writing and interpretation of history itself. Collectively\, the work emanating from this fellowship aims to encourage our world’s many societies and cultures to develop cooperatively and to strengthen the foundation of a more humane and mutually supportive global community. \n \nThe Tsao Family Residency supports distinguished Asian artists in a two month stay to create art or conduct research in the Academy’s library and archives. Tsao Family and Harvard University Graduate School of Design Affiliated Fellowship at the American Academy in Rome servers as a bridge by bringing the finest architects and designers at the GSD to the Academy to promote a critical engagement between the two institutions in the areas of architecture\, urban design\, or landscape design. \n \n▦ Moderator and Chair of the Committee of 100 Conversations ProgramPeter Young \nCEO\, Young & Partners \nCommittee of 100 Member\, New York Regional Chair and Board Member \nPeter Young is CEO of Young & Partners\, a boutique corporate strategy and investment banking firm focused on the life science and chemical industries. SUMMARY:Labor\, Cultural Work\, and More Ways to Organize the City
DESCRIPTION:This conversation draws crucial connections between cultural work and labor organizing in working-class communities across New York City. Bringing together organizers\, artists\, and community members\, the event traces how struggles over labor and land are deeply intertwined—from tenants organizing against evictions in Chinatown to campaigns resisting casino development in Flushing\, and movements to decriminalize sex work—we ask: are there other ways to organize the city? What forms of solidarity are necessary to build communities rooted in care? By placing past and present organizing in dialogue\, this program invites us to consider what forms of organizing are needed in this moment\, and how we build toward more sustainable futures for Chinatown residents and all working-class communities. \nWhether you’ve been part of W.O.W. since the beginning or are just getting to know the work\, we welcome you to join us for an evening of reflection\, celebration\, and community.

SUMMARY:Virtual: China Institute Lunch and Learn
DESCRIPTION:Lunch and Learn is a free monthly online program on Chinese language and culture. No prior knowledge of Chinese is required. Conducted in English\, the program offers participants the opportunity to gain insights into Chinese life through art and literature\, guided by our language and cultural experts—all from the comfort of home. \nWe are featuring Chinese Medicine in Spring 2026! \nJoin us virtually to explore Chinese medicine as a living cultural tradition and learn how Chinese ideas about the body\, nature\, and balance have shaped daily life for thousands of years. \nTraditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has evolved over centuries\, offering a distinctive way of understanding health\, the body\, and the world around us. Rooted in observations of nature and grounded in philosophical ideas such as yin and yang\, qi\, and seasonal harmony\, Chinese medicine reflects a holistic view of life that connects the human body with the environment\, community\, and time. Exploring these concepts offers a meaningful pathway to understanding Chinese culture\, history\, and ways of living. \nWe will explore core cultural concepts in Chinese medicine\, including balance and harmony\, seasonal living\, food and herbs as everyday supports\, and gentle mind–body practices. We will highlight how these ideas have influenced daily routines\, dietary habits\, and wellness practices across Chinese history and into the present day. \nContact:\nYongqiang Lin\, ylin@chinainstitute.org \nSee the playlist of past Lunch & Learn on YouTube

SUMMARY:Mourning the Ming or Mourning the Self? Writing Dream of the Red Chamber and Reading It Across Time
DESCRIPTION:Since its emergence in the eighteenth century\, Dream of the Red Chamber has been widely regarded as the greatest novel in the Chinese literary tradition. Written over more than a decade by Cao Xueqin under conditions of poverty and without patronage\, the novel was left unfinished at the author’s death. Yet despite censorship\, repeated bans\, and its early circulation only in manuscript form\, it achieved extraordinary vitality among readers and went on to inspire countless adaptations in drama\, film\, and television. \nThis lecture explores how Dream of the Red Chamber has been written\, read\, and reinterpreted across different historical moments. From its early reception as a work of emotional and artistic brilliance\, through the late Qing and Republican debates between allegorical “hidden meaning” interpretations and modern textual scholarship\, to its Marxist readings in the socialist era\, the novel has continually been reshaped by changing intellectual and political climates. \nBy tracing the novel’s transmission history and major interpretive frameworks\, this lecture asks a broader question: how can an unfinished work remain endlessly generative\, inviting each generation to read its own concerns into its pages? In doing so\, Dream of the Red Chamber emerges not only as a literary masterpiece\, but as a mirror reflecting the evolving cultural psyche of China itself.

SUMMARY:AANHPI Civic Engagement: Voting Rights -Post Callais Decision
DESCRIPTION:AAPIP is convening a funder briefing to address what the Callais decision means\, what organizations need\, and where philanthropy can act before 2026 election maps are finalized. \nThe Callais Decision Is Already Redrawing Maps. Here’s What Funders Need to Know \nOn April 29\, 2026\, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a 6-3 ruling in Louisiana v. Callais that effectively dismantled Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. The decision raised the legal bar for challenging discriminatory voting maps\, a standard Congress had explicitly lowered in 1982 because it was too high. \nThe consequences are already in motion. Louisiana halted an active primary election to redraw congressional maps. Alabama\, Florida\, Georgia\, Mississippi\, South Carolina\, and Tennessee have initiated or are actively considering emergency redistricting sessions. The maps being drawn now will likely have an immediate impact on midterm elections\, with longstanding implications for future election cycles. \nAANHPI communities in the South are part of this fight. In Georgia\, North Carolina\, Texas\, and Virginia\, AANHPI voters have helped shift competitive congressional seats. The same legal standard that previously protected Black voters from discriminatory mapping also protected AANHPI voters. Its erosion is a shared and immediate loss. \nRegister\nYou will hear from: \nJohn C. Yang\, Executive Director\, Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC on legal analysis of the Callais decision and its implications for AANHPI communities \nChristine Chen\, Executive Director\, APIA Vote on national analysis of impact\, trends\, and where AANHPI communities face the greatest exposure \nAshna Khanna\, Executive Director\, Asian American Advocacy Fund on state-level analysis with a focus on Atlanta and the Southeast \nQuanita Toffie\, Co-Executive Director\, AAPI Civic Engagement Fund on philanthropic strategy\, rapid-response giving opportunities\, and a direct call to action for funders \nThis briefing is designed to give funders specific information\, direct access to organizations with identified funding needs\, and concrete steps to act within the current redistricting window. \nJust 0.34% of U.S. philanthropic dollars currently reach AANHPI communities. Organizations are being asked to scale legal support\, voter education\, and organizing work without the funding to sustain that pace. \nWe hope you’ll join us.

SUMMARY:JAPANESE GRANDMA FUNERAL (A Fringe Fundraiser Show)
DESCRIPTION:Kento the Clown restages his Okinawan grandmother’s funeral with the audience as family—a joyful\, participatory ritual. Fringe fundraiser.\n\n\nKento the Clown restages his Okinawan grandmother’s funeral—with the audience as his family—in this joyful\, participatory ritual about grief\, culture\, and learning to ask for help. Speaking of asking for help\, this performance is also a fundraiser supporting the show’s upcoming Edinburgh Fringe run. \nKento the Clown missed his Okinawan grandmother’s funeral\, so he’s creating a new one—with the audience cast as his entire family—in this intimate\, participatory clown ritual. This performance also serves as a fundraiser to support the show’s upcoming run at the Edinburgh Fringe. \nAudience members are invited into gentle\, joyful participation: performing a candy version of hashiwatashi (the bone-passing ritual)\, holding cue cards while Kento performs Macbeth for his grandmother (a former high-school drama teacher)\, and joining small communal gestures throughout the ceremony. \nBeneath the playful clowning is a deeply human story about a boy raised to be “strong and independent\,” so much so that he never learned how to ask for help. In this imagined funeral\, Obaachan teaches him her final lesson: strength doesn’t mean doing everything alone. \nWhile it deals with death and family\, audiences leave feeling warm\, included\, and unexpectedly buoyed. \nKento the Clown is played by Kento Morita\, a Japanese American actor\, clown\, and writer. He originated the role of Actor 5 in Akira Kurosawa Explains His Movies and Yogurt at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company\, and has provided voice work for Marty Supreme and Get Jiro!. Kento is a contributor to The Onion\, and regularly performs at Upright Citizens Brigade\, The Second City\, and other performance spaces around New York.

He hosts a traveling food show\, works with his best friend\, and samples the best the world has to offer. There’s only one problem: his love life. Hubie treats his romantic partners as courses on a tasting menu. His one rule when it comes to love: three months and it’s over. Hubie is no hubby. \nThen he meets Anastasia\, a mysterious woman who seems to share his approach to life—she wants fun\, sex\, and the freedom to depart before dawn. They have chance encounters in glamorous locations around the world—a luxury spa in the Utah desert\, a cliffside hideaway in Jamaica\, exclusive Los Angeles parties—where they party and flirt with electric energy\, but are always with other partners. When they finally connect\, the chemistry is undeniable. Just as they find a way to be together\, the specters of their pasts—the secrets and burdens beneath their carefree exteriors—arise to threaten everything. Will they be able to accept each other fully when they know the full truth? Can they shake off shame\, regret\, and emotional baggage to free themselves to love? \nSharply comic but with hidden depths\, Come Undone is about how we run from love and how it hunts us down.\n“Come for the satirical millennial cringe and over-the-top luxury lifestyle fantasy\, stay for the surprisingly sensitive portrayal of a bombastic\, bighearted Asian American dudebro who risks it all for a chance at the real thing: true love! Exuberantly horny and—believe it or not—absolutely romantic.”—Jean Chen Ho\, author of Fiona and Jane \n\n\n\nEddie Huang is a decorated chef\, director\, and New York Times bestselling author. Owner of the iconic Baohaus\, which ushered in a generation of Taiwanese-Chinese restaurants and launched his career hosting Huang’s World for Vice\, Huang went on to adapt his memoir\, Fresh Off the Boat\, into a critically acclaimed ABC comedy series. SUMMARY:Beyond 250: We Belong: Citizenship and Exclusion
DESCRIPTION:Register for “Beyond 250: We Belong\,” a timely conversation on citizenship and exclusion in the U.S. with National Immigration Law Center\, Asian Law Caucus\, and the Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI)\, happening tomorrow\, Wednesday\, June 17 at 10 am ET.\n\nBeyond 250: We Belong\nWednesday\, June 17\, 2026 10:00 AM ET / 7:00 AM PT \n\nBirthright citizenship is under attack. The 14th Amendment — born out of the fight to recognize Black Americans as full citizens — is being weaponized to strip citizenship from children of immigrants and redefine who this country claims as its own. \n\n\nThe United States’ 250th anniversary must be a moment of reckoning and taking stock of where we are as a country\, what it means to build a multiracial democracy\, and who truly has a path to citizenship and belonging. In the opening webinar of Advancement Project’s new campaign “Beyond 250: Another World is Possible\,” we embrace the concept that we belong in America’s next 250 years. \n\n\nWe’ll be joined by Cassandra Charles\, National Immigration Law Center; Nana Gyamfi\, Black Alliance for Just Immigration; and Aarti Kohli\, Asian Law Caucus\, as we examine the history of citizenship and exclusion in America\, the legal and political battles happening right now\, and what a democracy that truly belongs to all of us could look like.

SUMMARY:Music: Min Kwon: America/Beautiful 250
DESCRIPTION:For her project America/Beautiful\, Korean-American pianist Min Kwon commissioned almost eighty leading composers across the United States to each write a variation on America the Beautiful\, producing a vast mosaic of voices\, aesthetics\, identities\, and histories. No two variations are alike. Some are tender and lyrical\, others bracing and dissonant; some meditate\, others protest. Together they form a living portrait of a country in conversation with itself. Now\, as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary\, Kwon returns to the Catacombs with music from this monumental project – timed to the release of her complete recording of all 76 variations. What began as a question has become a document of its time: a sonic archive of how America’s leading creative voices\, in all their diversity\, heard this moment in history.
