SUMMARY:Author Event: Mackenzie Reed and Katie Jung
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate I Hope This Email Finds You in Hell and You’re the One That I Haunt\, we’re hosting a BK event with Mackenzie Reed and Katie Jung. \nThere will be a book signing to follow. This is a ticketed event that includes a paperback copy of either Mackenzie’s I Hope This Email Finds You in Hell or Katie’s You’re the One That I Haunt. \nCan’t attend the event? Signed books from Mackenzie and Katie will be available for Brooklyn pick-up and shipping here. Must order by September 17. \nAbout I Hope This Email Finds You in Hell: \nWhen staying late at the office leads to witnessing an exorcism\, Brie Benson’s mundane life takes a hellish turn…literally. \nAfter her parents’ death\, twenty-seven-year-old Brie has mastered the art of compartmentalization to survive her mind-numbing routine as a receptionist at a life insurance company. But when she accidentally catches her hot\, uptight boss\, Luke\, performing an exorcism on Debra from accounting\, her carefully ordered world implodes. \nSwearing Brie to secrecy\, Luke reveals he’s from a line of demon hunters and that demonic activity is spiking. But when her emotional support coworker vanishes\, Brie is determined to find her. With nothing left to lose\, she convinces Luke to let her join his rescue mission. \nThe problem? Their destination is hell. And the entrance is in Times Square. \nNow Brie and Luke must navigate a corporate underworld of monsters and bureaucratic nightmares while racing to save their colleague and repair a tearing veil between worlds. All before their growing feelings become irrelevant and hell claims them forever. \nAbout Mackenzie Reed: \nMackenzie Reed is the author of two young adult novels\, The Rosewood Hunt and The Wilde Trials. She cultivated her love of storytelling at Nazareth College\, where she graduated with a BA in communication and media. A native of upstate New York\, she can usually be found spending time with her family\, trying to outwalk her plot holes\, and living out her authorly dream of writing in local cafes. I Hope This Email Finds You in Hellis her first adult novel. \nAbout You’re the One That I Haunt: \nTo save her best friend and lifelong crush from his family’s deadly curse\, Libby must team up with (and try not to catch feelings for) a handsome ghost only she can see \nLibby Lakoski has two major problems. First\, she’s secretly in love with her best friend\, Carter Coldwell\, and second\, he’s marrying someone else. Carter’s the only person who has ever made Libby feel chosen\, and sure\, his fiancee is a British diamond heiress\, but Carter and Libby have years of shared history and longing looks between them. Not to mention\, Libby is the only person Carter trusted enough to tell about the dark magic that plagues his family. \nBut then a third and related problem presents itself—or\, himself. Trip Coldwell is Carter’s handsome\, smart\, flirtatious cousin who also happens to be… a ghost. Trip’s “unfinished business” is to break the Coldwell curse\, but the solution hinges on Libby encouraging Carter to allow his wedding to proceed. Unfortunately\, Libby is the only person who can see Trip\, and her objective is the exact opposite. Can Libby put aside her pining for Carter and work with his hot and not-quite-living cousin to save both men? \nAs they follow a trail of clues across New York City\, Libby finds herself questioning just how much Carter reciprocated her friendship\, feeling perplexed by a growing attraction to Trip\, and fantasizing about actually touching him. With the countdown to the wedding in full swing\, Libby must choose between saving the Coldwells and holding tight to her own happily ever after. \nAbout Katie Jung: \nKatie Jung writes romance about the messy parts of being human\, and what it means to define our own happily-ever-afters. She lives in upstate New York with her husband and three children. You’re the One That I Haunt is her debut novel.

SUMMARY:Koreatown\, NYC: The Consumption of a Transnational Brand
DESCRIPTION:In the past decade\, Korean entertainment has gained global recognition\, with Korean movies and TV shows winning Oscars and Emmys\, and K-Pop groups becoming wildly popular. In Manhattan\, Koreatown has become a popular destination for both locals and tourists\, drawing them in with its bars\, restaurants\, and day spas. Jinwon Kim argues that Manhattan’s Koreatown has become a new type of ethnic enclave\, what she dubs a “transclave.” This commercialized ethnic space exists solely for consumption\, leisure\, and entertainment\, and has been shaped by South Korea’s nation-branding strategy\, new economic and cultural strategies\, patterns in Korean migration\, and shifts in tourism and urban policies in New York City. Kim posits that for many consumers in Koreatown\, especially those who are not of Korean descent\, the space has become a commercialized place where transnational culture meets the diverse racial and ethnic mosaic of New York City. Kim emphasizes how the space functions to “brand Korea” as a space to “consume ethnicity\,” reflecting the landscape of South Korea’s consumer culture through the physical appearance of buildings and stores and the inclusion of franchise brands. \nIn this talk\, Kim explores the recent popularity of Korean food in New York City by focusing on both transnational and domestic factors\, leading to the new trend of commercialization of ethnic food\, emphasis on authenticity\, and rise of the omnivore society\, by delivering the voices of ordinary people. While Koreatown’s authenticity has been largely defined by commercialized ethnic cuisine by local entrepreneurs\, the Korean government\, and franchises\, Kim argues that Koreatown’s authenticity has represented the collective imaginations and narratives of various consumer groups–Korean nationals\, Korean Americans\, and non-Koreans. \nThis program will be recorded then released on October 1. \nJinwon Kim is Assistant Professor of Sociology at Smith College. She is the author of Koreatown\, NYC: The Consumption of a Transnational Brand and a co-editor of Koreatowns: Exploring the Economics\, Politics\, and Identities of Korean Spatial Formations.

SUMMARY:Book Launch | What's a Snow Leopard to You? by Chen-Fu Hsu
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE BOOK \n\n\n\n*Winner of the 2021 Taiwan Literature Award* \nA captivating fusion of travelogue\, fiction\, and cultural meditation that journeys deep into the heart of Tibet. \nChen-Fu Hsu’s debut novel begins with a young Taiwanese naturalist on an arduous quest for the elusive snow leopard\, weaving in excerpts from translated entries from a left behind diary of a fictional Japanese monk\, which bears witness to the seismic transformations of Tibet across the decades under Chinese rule. \nFollowing his deeply spiritual connection to Tibet\, the protagonist sets off on multiple journeys to the region\, describing in brilliant detail the vast beauty of the Tibetan plateau and the wildlife that has existed since time immemorial. However\, on his third visit to the region\, he is harassed at every turn by the Chinese police who confiscate his belongings\, including his books\, eventually forcing him to leave for Taiwan. One book overlooked by the Chinese police is the long-lost diary of Udagawa Ekai\, a Zen monk who traveled to Lhasa in the postwar years. The diary tells the monk’s story up until his death as a recluse\, and paints a picture of a Tibet that has a diverse and deeply religious culture that has fought against invaders on multiple fronts. \nHsu laces excerpts from Ekai’s diary within his narrative\, tracing the changes sparked from the horrors of the Chinese military annexation in the 1950s through the Cultural Revolution and into the contemporary age of forced economic development. Through encounters with the people of Tibet and their stories\, What’s a Snow Leopard to You? spans the divide between an intimate portrait of a land in flux and a philosophical inquiry into humanity’s fraught yet enduring bond with nature. This richly layered work braids history with myth\, environmentalism with art\, and creates a single story of change in one of the world’s most sparsely inhabited regions. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nChen-Fu Hsu (徐振輔) was born in Taipei in 1994. He holds a BS in Entomology and an MA in Geography from National Taiwan University. His work has long explored the entanglements between human and non-human worlds. He has been selected four times for the Chiu Ko Publishing Annual Prose Selection and has received several literary awards\, including the Taipei Literature Annuity. What’s a Snow Leopard to You? is his debut novel\, which has already received multiple literary awards in Taiwan. \nIN CONVERSATION WITH \nStephan Zguta is an editor at Skyhorse Publishing\, where he works primarily on titles for Arcade Publishing\, an imprint specializing in literary fiction and nonfiction from around the world. He lives in Queens\, New York\, with his wife and son.

SUMMARY:Coffee & Canvass
DESCRIPTION:Walk the neighborhood with us and help build a real-time database of Chinatown’s storefronts! \nVolunteers who register will receive a code for free co-working (9am–5pm) at the Hub for the day of the event. \nWhy canvass storefronts? \nChinatown has been on the defensive for decades. Critical support often only arrives after it’s too late: After a legacy business closes\, after a block loses its character\, after displacement is irreversible. To change that\, we need to understand what’s happening in real time. \nThrough storefront canvassing\, we can: \n\nTrack closures and openings\, and see what businesses immediately need WtC support\nSpot trends in business types\, and identify commercial corridor shifts – what’s growing\, what’s disappearing\nAdvocate with real evidence\, and give policymakers and media the data they need to support Chinatown’s future\nPreserve culture and legacy by building a historical record of Chinatown’s commercial corridor\n\nThis is a monthly event that will take place every 4th Thursday of the month

SUMMARY:Maedeup: Weaving Shin Yun-bok
DESCRIPTION:Presented by La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club \nTickets: Free Admission (RSVP Required) \nA live\, non-verbal performance that reimagines Korean classical painting through contemporary performance \nNamed after the Korean word for “knot\,” maedeup evokes the weaving together of image\, movement\, sound\, and memory. Inspired by the visual world of Shin Yun-bok (Hyewon)\, an 18th-century Korean painter renowned for his portrayals of women and everyday life\, the work unfolds without spoken text. Foley performance\, tableau vivant\, live visuals\, and live camera work transform his paintings into living\, time-based events in which body\, sound\, and image converge in real time. Created by kNOT and produced by the Seoul Institute of the Arts with support from the Kansong Art and Culture Foundation\, the production offers an encounter with Korean visual heritage beyond language and cultural boundaries. \nAn artistic initiative of the Seoul Institute of the Arts\, the project brings Korean cultural heritage into contemporary performance and\, through its presentation at La MaMa\, into dialogue with international audiences. Led by director and professor Kim JiYoung\, the production brings together professional performers connected to SeoulArts in an interdisciplinary collaboration spanning theatre\, visual art\, sound\, photography\, and live media. Kim’s recent work explores new ways of connecting Korean tradition with contemporary expression. \nFor more information\, visit Maedeup: Weaving Shin Yun-bok – La MaMa – Experimental Theatre Club in New York

SUMMARY:Take Me Home
DESCRIPTION:Anna (Anna Sargent making her acting debut)\, a middle-aged Korean adoptee with a cognitive disability\, cares for her aging parents in a fragile balance of meeting one another’s needs. Alongside her sister Emily (Ali Ahn) and her father (Victor Slezak)\, they must confront challenging questions about the future\, but she remains determined to build a life where all of them can thrive. \nLiz Sargent’s intimate debut drama examines the shifting demands placed on a unique — and uniquely challenged — family in a Florida suburb. Expanded from Sargent’s acclaimed short (2023 Sundance Film Festival)\, Take Me Home exposes the indignities of the American health care system and the structural challenges faced by disabled people. The film also gently and imaginatively traces a path for Anna’s independence and connection to a community of chosen family. By turns quietly devastating and bracingly optimistic\, Take Me Home confronts us with an impossible situation\, while holding out hope for Anna’s future. \nWed\, Sep 23: 6:50 show introduced by recording artist Lachi\, plus Q&A with writer/director Liz Sargent & actors Ali Ahn\, Victor Slezak & Marceline Hugot! \nThu\, Sep 24: Q&A with writer/director Liz Sargent moderated by CNN/NBC/MSN NOW anchor Richard Lui\, hosted by Disability Belongs after 4:25 show!  \nThu\, Sep 24: 6:50 show introduced by Emmy Rossum and Steve Way\, plus Q&A with writer/director Liz Sargent\, actors Ali Ahn & Victor Slezak\, and exec. SUMMARY:Book Launch | Foreigners by E.L. Shen
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE BOOK \nPerfect for fans of Pachinko and Last Night at the Telegraph Club\, this propulsive\, tender novel follows an immigrant family across generations as they navigate love\, belonging\, and the great fictions we must weave to preserve a legacy. \nFor centuries\, the Chin family has kept its secrets. \nIn 1878\, Duanfang knows he’s destined for greatness. He’ll do anything to uphold and protect the legacy of his Manchu family—even if it means hiding his past. \nIn 1965\, Zheng Yi flies from Taiwan to New York City to have a shot at attending an American college. Thrown into a world of parties\, prejudice\, and a tumultuous romance\, Yi worries that New York may be more than she can handle. But just as she is beginning to adjust\, she must make a shocking decision that will irrevocably change her life and her future forever. \nToday\, Dawn Chin’s family is opaque at best\, with heavy expectations and heavier silences. But an assignment to interview her grandmother is about to crack open her real family history: a legacy hundreds of years old\, and a lie decades in the making . . . \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nE.L. Her young adult debut\, The Queens of New York (HarperCollins) is an American Library Association Best Book for Young Adults\, a New York Public Library Best Book of the Year\, a Junior Library Guild Selection\, and a Common Sense Media Selection. SUMMARY:MOCA TALKS with Daniel Tam-Claiborne – Transplants
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) invites you to an engaging conversation with writer Daniel Tam-Claiborne on his debut novel Transplants\, a lyrical and piercing exploration of migration\, belonging\, race\, love\, and the parts of ourselves that can get lost in translation. \nSet across China and the United States during a single extraordinary year\, Transplantsfollows Lin and Liz\, an unlikely pair brought together on a university campus in rural Qixian. Lin\, a Chinese student who feels closer to her animals than to her peers\, and Liz\, a Chinese American English teacher grieving the sudden death of her mother\, each navigate hostility\, isolation\, and the uneasy boundaries of identity. After a betrayal leads to Lin’s expulsion\, their paths diverge and unexpectedly intertwine. Lin pursues a degree near Liz’s Ohio hometown\, while Liz searches for answers about her parents’ decision to leave China before she was born. As a global catastrophe heightens tensions between China and an increasingly fractured United States\, both women must confront the familiar and strange within themselves\, and within each other. \nThe conversation will explore the novel’s themes of displacement\, intimacy\, power\, and freedom\, as well as the possibilities that emerge when we open ourselves to lives and histories beyond our own. \nAbout Daniel Tam-Claiborne \nDaniel Tam-Claiborne is a multiracial writer\, multimedia producer\, and nonprofit director. His debut novel\, Transplants (Simon & Schuster\, 2025)\, was the winner of the Chinese American Librarians Association Best Book Award and a finalist for the PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction. He is the author of the short story collection What Never Leaves\, and his writing has appeared in Michigan Quarterly Review\, HuffPost\, Catapult\, Literary Hub\, Off Assignment\, The Rumpus\, and elsewhere. A 2022 National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellow\, he has also received awards and fellowships from the U.S. Fulbright Program\, Poets & Writers\, Bread Loaf\, Sewanee Writers’ Conference\, Seattle Office of Arts & Culture\, and others. Daniel holds degrees from Oberlin College\, Yale University\, and the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College. \nAbout Transplants \nA harrowing and poignant novel following two young women in pursuit of kinship and self-discovery who yearn to survive in a world that doesn’t know where either of them belong. \nOn a university campus in rural Qixian\, Lin and Liz make an improbable pair: Lin\, a Chinese student closer to her menagerie of pets than to her peers\, and Liz\, a Chinese American teacher grieving her mother’s sudden death. They’re each met with hostility—Lin by her classmates\, who mock her for dating a white foreigner; Liz by her fellow English teachers\, who exploit their privilege—and forge an unlikely friendship. \nAfter a startling betrayal that results in Lin’s expulsion\, they swap places. Lin becomes convinced to pursue her degree at a community college near Liz’s Ohio hometown\, while Liz searches for answers as to what drove her parents to leave China before she was born. But when a global catastrophe deepens the fissures between modern-day China and an increasingly fractured United States\, Lin and Liz—far from home and estranged from themselves—are forced to confront both the familiar and the strange in each other. \nUnspooling over the course of a single extraordinary year in our not-yet-distant past and in small towns from Dandong to Deadwood\, Transplants is a piercing story of migration\, belonging\, and the parts of ourselves that get lost in translation. Alternating between Liz and Lin’s perspectives\, it is a lyrical and moving exploration of race\, love\, power\, and freedom that illuminates the limits and possibilities of what can happen when we open ourselves to the unknown and reveals how even our fiercest differences may bring us closer than we might ever imagine.

SUMMARY:Negotiated Skin
DESCRIPTION:An immersive solo exhibition by Freda Xinyue Xia exploring body\, repair\, and transformation through biomaterial textiles and paintings. \n\nNegotiated Skin is an immersive\, interdisciplinary solo exhibition by New York-based artist Freda Xinyue Xia\, presented at Gallery 456\, the visual arts exhibition space of the Chinese American Arts Council. Bringing together wearable sculpture\, suspended fiber works\, mineral-pigment paintings\, and Chinese paintings\, the exhibition creates an evolving environment in which soft sculptural forms and paintings enter into dialogue across body\, material\, culture\, time\, and space. \nFor this exhibition\, Xia develops translucent\, membrane-like forms through layering\, suspension\, collapse\, and visible acts of repair. Instead of depicting the body directly\, these works register its presence\, moving between garment\, sculpture\, and installation. Alongside them\, mineral-pigment paintings of heads glimpsed in New York City subway spaces offer a figurative counterpoint\, tracing bodies in motion\, proximity\, and separation. \nAcross these media\, Negotiated Skin explores boundaries between intimacy and exposure\, abstraction and figuration\, material fragility and shared presence. Skin emerges not as a fixed border\, but as a changing surface shaped by pressure\, contact\, and repair. Visitors are invited to move through the installation and encounter the work through proximity\, movement\, and perception. \nChinese American Arts Council’s Gallery 456 Visual Arts Exhibition Series is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
