SUMMARY:Theater: Dragoness and Art Exhibit: Misalignment
DESCRIPTION:A high-octane\, satirical commentary on race and creating art under capitalism\, Dragoness interrogates the ethics of reinventing identity in order to satisfy the expectations of those in power. \nWritten by Thai-American playwright Cha Mangan and directed by Samantha Toy Ozeas. Starring Vi To\, Bridget Gao\, Balfour Clark\, and Aaron Applebey. Produced by Tin Can Contingency. To learn more about the project and artists involved: https://givebutter.com/dragoness \nPerformances run May 28th-June 7th\, Thursdays-Sundays\, 7pm at Inspiration Point. Tickets are $15. \nPerformances of Dragoness will be accompanied by a visual art exhibition entitled Misalignment. Misalignment invites artists to respond to paradoxes\, splits\, and contradictions. They are interested in identity as paradox\, in life as contradiction\, and in practices that honor the multitudes within and the multiple realities that serve us both for expression and for protection. Work featured confronts internalized oppression\, betrayal—of language\, land\, lineage—and the uneasy desire to pass\, belong\, or ascend.

SUMMARY:Comics for the Revolution: Lianhuanhua in China 1949-1989
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with Zheng Shengtian\, Kuiyi Shen\, and Jane DeBevoise.\n\n\nPlease come to AAAinA at 6:30pm on Tuesday\, May 26 to hear artist\, curator\, and former China Art Academy professor Shengtian Zheng speak about his experience creating and teaching lianhuanhua\, followed by a conversation with U.C. San Diego professor Kuiyi Shen\, moderated by Jane DeBevoise. \nLianhuanhua are palm-sized picture books that emerged in China in the early 1900s as popular forms of entertainment\, much like comics. After 1949 and the establishment of the People’s Republic of China\, Mao Zedong mandated that art\, including comics\, should serve the people. For the next 30 years\, artists were enlisted to illustrate these little picture books with images of valiant workers\, victorious PLA soldiers and model citizens\, often women. Hundreds of millions of copies were published. But when the Cultural Revolution ended in 1976 and the political environment relaxed\, classical legends\, love stories\, and Western sci-fi\, including Star Wars\, quickly replaced the heroic exploits of workers\, peasants and soldiers\, and the popularity of lianhuanhua surged. \nA selection of lianhuanhua from the 1920s to 1989 will be on display in the AAAinA reading room during the program. \nBios: \nZheng Shengtian is an artist\, scholar\, and curator based in Vancouver. Before 1990\, he worked at the China Academy of Art as Professor and Chair of the Oil Painting Department. He was a visiting professor at the University of Minnesota and San Diego State University\, Secretary of the Annie Wong Art Foundation\, Founding Board Director of the Vancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art\, and the Adjunct Director of the Institute of Asian Art at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Currently\, he is the Managing Editor of Yishu: Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art\, a trustee of Asia Art Archive in America and a Research Fellow at Simon Fraser University. Zheng has organized and curated numerous exhibitions and events\, and has frequently contributed to periodicals and catalogues. In 2013\, Zheng Shengtian: Selected Writing on Art was published in four volumes by China Academy Press. His latest publications include Sino-Mexican Art and Cultural Exchanges in the Twentieth Century (Cambria Press\, 2024) and a Chinese version. In 2011 he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for curatorial work by the Vancouver Biennale. In 2013 He received an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Emily Carr University of Art + Design. In 2025 he was given The King Charles III Coronation Medal for his contribution to the community. \nKuiyi Shen is Professor of Asian Art History\, Theory\, and Criticism at UC San Diego. His teaching and writing has focused on Chinese and Japanese art with an emphasis on modern and contemporary Chinese art and Sino-Japanese art exchanges in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He received a BA in fine arts from the Shanghai Normal University and an MA and PhD in art history from the Ohio State University. Shen is the author and co-author of many books and exhibition catalogues on modern and contemporary Chinese art\, including A Century in Crisis: Tradition and Modernity in the Art of Twentieth Century China (1998); Between the Thunder and the Rain: Chinese Paintings from the Opium War to the Cultural Revolution (2000); Zhou Brothers—Thirty Years of Collaboration (2004); Reboot: The Third Chengdu Biennale (2007); Chinese Posters (2009); Arts of Modern China (2012\, winner of the 2013 ICAS Book Prize in Humanities)\, Echo of the Universe: Ink Art of Liu Kuo-sung (2016); Li Huayi: Landscapes from a Master’s Heart (2018) and many others.  \nJane DeBevoise is President and Chair of Asia Art Archive in America in New York and Chair Emeritus of Asia Art Archive in Hong Kong. Prior to moving to Hong Kong in 2002\, Ms. DeBevoise was Deputy Director of the Guggenheim Museum\, responsible for museum operations and exhibitions globally. She joined the Museum in 1996 as Project Director of China: 5000 Years\, a large-scale exhibition of traditional and modern Chinese art that was presented in 1998 at the Guggenheim museums in New York and Bilbao. Prior to 1996\, Ms. DeBevoise was Managing Director at Bankers Trust Company where she worked for 14 years in New York\, Hong Kong\, Tokyo and London. With a MA from the University of California\, Berkeley and a PhD from The University of Hong Kong\, Ms. DeBevoise writes and lectures widely. Her publications include Between State and Market: Chinese Contemporary Art in the Post-Mao Era (2014) and the co-authored Uncooperative Contemporaries: Exhibitions in Shanghai in 2000 (2020). \nLight refreshments will be provided. \nThe event is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts\, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council\, Ruth Foundation for the Arts\, and other foundations and individuals.

SUMMARY:Exploring Foundations and Futures: Asian American and Pacific Islander Multimedia Textbook
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the UCLA Asian American Studies Center\, Teach Asian American Stories invites educators to explore Foundations and Futures\, a newly launched free and online multimedia textbook that centers Asian American and Pacific Islander histories and perspectives – because our history is your history. \nThis interactive session will begin with a guided walkthrough of the textbook\, highlighting its rich collection of chapters\, media\, and classroom-ready resources. Participants will then have dedicated time to explore the platform and consider how it can support their own teaching. \nWe’ll close with a preview of the curriculum modules for the chapter\, “The Tape Family and Chinese American Civil Rights.” We will examine the Tape v. Hurley (1885) case to explore the distinctions between exclusion and segregation and to open up broader conversations about race\, access to education\, and belonging. Educators will leave with practical tools and inspiration to bring this new resource into their classrooms in meaningful ways. \nFree and open to all. Professional Development hours awarded. \nThis workshop is brought to you by UCLA Asian American Studies Center\, Teach Asian American Stories\, and AAPI New Jersey. \n– \nFacilitators: Christian-Joseph Macahilig\, UCLA Outreach Coordinator\, and Sulynn Miao\, TAAS Curriculum and Program Manager \nChristian-Joseph Macahilig is an Outreach Coordinator for the Foundation and Futures AAPI multimedia textbook team with the UCLA Asian American Studies Center. Prior to joining the Foundations and Futures team\, Christian taught middle school Social Studies in New York City and also worked with Filipinx-American nonprofit organizations. From his experiences as both a student and educator\, he noticed the Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders were barely represented in curriculum and other classroom materials. This absence drives Christian to reform curriculum by advocating for all schools to have AAPI and Ethnic Studies as required learning. He aims to elevate voices of the AAPI community and ensure that their stories and cultures are taught with fidelity.

Conversation will be moderated by Amy Wang of Long Time No See. \nWalk-ins are welcome\, with priority to those who have RSVP’d \nProgram: \n\n“Rocking the Boat” features pioneering advocate Yee Ling Poon\, following her time with Asian Americans for Equality (AAFE) and the Basement Workshop.\n“Everyday Chinatown” is an animated shorts series that highlights objects found in everyday life in our community through animated artwork by Asian American artists and oral history recordings from Chinatown community members.\n“An Ode to our Generations: with Nobuko Miyamoto (Yellow Pearl)” is a short film featuring musician and “artivist” Nobuko Miyamoto. This is the third short film in a series inspired by the incredible work and foundation laid by Basement Workshop and Yellow Pearl more than 50 years ago\n“Grand Rising” is a fashion story inspired by Domingo Anthony\, one of the first Black landowners in New Netherland circa 1643 who lived in the south eastern corner of current day Chinatown.\n“Presenting Think!Chinatown” is a mini-documentary about Think!Chinatown’s work during a year of extraordinary growth with the support of an amazing team and dedicated volunteers.\n“Artisanal Chinatown: Tofu” is a mini-documentary produced by Think!Chinatown\, starring the tofu makers of Chinatown. SUMMARY:Our Laundry\, Our Town with Alvin Eng In Conversation with Radha Vatsal
DESCRIPTION:Join Alvin Eng discussing his book Our Laundry\, Our Town My Chinese American Life from Flushing to the Downtown Stage and Beyond. Leading the conversation will be author and essayist\, Radha Vatsal. \nWith humor and grace\, the memoir of a first-generation Chinese American in New York City. \nOur Laundry\, Our Town is a memoir that decodes and processes the fractured urban oracle bones of Alvin Eng’s upbringing in Flushing\, Queens\, in the 1970s. Back then\, his family was one of the few immigrant Chinese families in a far-flung neighborhood in New York City. His parents had an arranged marriage and ran a Chinese hand laundry. From behind the counter of his parents’ laundry and within the confines of a household that was rooted in a different century and culture\, he sought to reconcile this insular home life with the turbulent yet inspiring street life that was all around them––from the faux martial arts of TV’s Kung Fu to the burgeoning underworld of the punk rock scene. \nIn the 1970s\, NYC\, like most of the world\, was in the throes of regenerating itself in the wake of major social and cultural changes resulting from the counterculture and civil rights movements. And by the 1980s\, Flushing had become NYC’s second Chinatown. But Eng remained one of the neighborhood’s few Chinese citizens who did not speak fluent Chinese. Finding his way in the downtown theater and performance world of Manhattan\, he discovered the under-chronicled Chinese influence on Thornton Wilder’s foundational Americana drama\, Our Town. This discovery became the unlikely catalyst for a psyche-healing pilgrimage to Hong Kong and Guangzhou\, China—his ancestral home in southern China—that led to writing and performing his successful autobiographical monologue\, The Last Emperor of Flushing. Learning to tell his own story on stages around the world was what proudly made him whole. \nAs cities\, classrooms\, cultures\, and communities the world over continue to re-examine the parameters of diversity\, equity\, and inclusion\, Our Laundry\, Our Town will reverberate with a broad readership.
