SUMMARY:Take Me Home
DESCRIPTION:Anna (Anna Sargent making her acting debut)\, a middle-aged Korean adoptee with a cognitive disability\, cares for her aging parents in a fragile balance of meeting one another’s needs. Alongside her sister Emily (Ali Ahn) and her father (Victor Slezak)\, they must confront challenging questions about the future\, but she remains determined to build a life where all of them can thrive. \nLiz Sargent’s intimate debut drama examines the shifting demands placed on a unique — and uniquely challenged — family in a Florida suburb. Expanded from Sargent’s acclaimed short (2023 Sundance Film Festival)\, Take Me Home exposes the indignities of the American health care system and the structural challenges faced by disabled people. The film also gently and imaginatively traces a path for Anna’s independence and connection to a community of chosen family. By turns quietly devastating and bracingly optimistic\, Take Me Home confronts us with an impossible situation\, while holding out hope for Anna’s future. \nWed\, Sep 23: 6:50 show introduced by recording artist Lachi\, plus Q&A with writer/director Liz Sargent & actors Ali Ahn\, Victor Slezak & Marceline Hugot! \nThu\, Sep 24: Q&A with writer/director Liz Sargent moderated by CNN/NBC/MSN NOW anchor Richard Lui\, hosted by Disability Belongs after 4:25 show!  \nThu\, Sep 24: 6:50 show introduced by Emmy Rossum and Steve Way\, plus Q&A with writer/director Liz Sargent\, actors Ali Ahn & Victor Slezak\, and exec. SUMMARY:Maedeup: Weaving Shin Yun-bok
DESCRIPTION:Presented by La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club \nTickets: Free Admission (RSVP Required) \nA live\, non-verbal performance that reimagines Korean classical painting through contemporary performance \nNamed after the Korean word for “knot\,” maedeup evokes the weaving together of image\, movement\, sound\, and memory. Inspired by the visual world of Shin Yun-bok (Hyewon)\, an 18th-century Korean painter renowned for his portrayals of women and everyday life\, the work unfolds without spoken text. Foley performance\, tableau vivant\, live visuals\, and live camera work transform his paintings into living\, time-based events in which body\, sound\, and image converge in real time. Created by kNOT and produced by the Seoul Institute of the Arts with support from the Kansong Art and Culture Foundation\, the production offers an encounter with Korean visual heritage beyond language and cultural boundaries. \nAn artistic initiative of the Seoul Institute of the Arts\, the project brings Korean cultural heritage into contemporary performance and\, through its presentation at La MaMa\, into dialogue with international audiences. Led by director and professor Kim JiYoung\, the production brings together professional performers connected to SeoulArts in an interdisciplinary collaboration spanning theatre\, visual art\, sound\, photography\, and live media. Kim’s recent work explores new ways of connecting Korean tradition with contemporary expression. \nFor more information\, visit Maedeup: Weaving Shin Yun-bok – La MaMa – Experimental Theatre Club in New York

SUMMARY:The Recursion of a Moth

SUMMARY:Coffee & Canvass
DESCRIPTION:Walk the neighborhood with us and help build a real-time database of Chinatown’s storefronts! \nVolunteers who register will receive a code for free co-working (9am–5pm) at the Hub for the day of the event. \nWhy canvass storefronts? \nChinatown has been on the defensive for decades. Critical support often only arrives after it’s too late: After a legacy business closes\, after a block loses its character\, after displacement is irreversible. To change that\, we need to understand what’s happening in real time. \nThrough storefront canvassing\, we can: \n\nTrack closures and openings\, and see what businesses immediately need WtC support\nSpot trends in business types\, and identify commercial corridor shifts – what’s growing\, what’s disappearing\nAdvocate with real evidence\, and give policymakers and media the data they need to support Chinatown’s future\nPreserve culture and legacy by building a historical record of Chinatown’s commercial corridor\n\nThis is a monthly event that will take place every 4th Thursday of the month

SUMMARY:Book Launch | What's a Snow Leopard to You? by Chen-Fu Hsu
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE BOOK \n\n\n\n*Winner of the 2021 Taiwan Literature Award* \nA captivating fusion of travelogue\, fiction\, and cultural meditation that journeys deep into the heart of Tibet. \nChen-Fu Hsu’s debut novel begins with a young Taiwanese naturalist on an arduous quest for the elusive snow leopard\, weaving in excerpts from translated entries from a left behind diary of a fictional Japanese monk\, which bears witness to the seismic transformations of Tibet across the decades under Chinese rule. \nFollowing his deeply spiritual connection to Tibet\, the protagonist sets off on multiple journeys to the region\, describing in brilliant detail the vast beauty of the Tibetan plateau and the wildlife that has existed since time immemorial. However\, on his third visit to the region\, he is harassed at every turn by the Chinese police who confiscate his belongings\, including his books\, eventually forcing him to leave for Taiwan. One book overlooked by the Chinese police is the long-lost diary of Udagawa Ekai\, a Zen monk who traveled to Lhasa in the postwar years. The diary tells the monk’s story up until his death as a recluse\, and paints a picture of a Tibet that has a diverse and deeply religious culture that has fought against invaders on multiple fronts. \nHsu laces excerpts from Ekai’s diary within his narrative\, tracing the changes sparked from the horrors of the Chinese military annexation in the 1950s through the Cultural Revolution and into the contemporary age of forced economic development. Through encounters with the people of Tibet and their stories\, What’s a Snow Leopard to You? spans the divide between an intimate portrait of a land in flux and a philosophical inquiry into humanity’s fraught yet enduring bond with nature. This richly layered work braids history with myth\, environmentalism with art\, and creates a single story of change in one of the world’s most sparsely inhabited regions. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nChen-Fu Hsu (徐振輔) was born in Taipei in 1994. He holds a BS in Entomology and an MA in Geography from National Taiwan University. His work has long explored the entanglements between human and non-human worlds. He has been selected four times for the Chiu Ko Publishing Annual Prose Selection and has received several literary awards\, including the Taipei Literature Annuity. What’s a Snow Leopard to You? is his debut novel\, which has already received multiple literary awards in Taiwan. \nIN CONVERSATION WITH \nStephan Zguta is an editor at Skyhorse Publishing\, where he works primarily on titles for Arcade Publishing\, an imprint specializing in literary fiction and nonfiction from around the world. SUMMARY:Koreatown\, NYC: The Consumption of a Transnational Brand
DESCRIPTION:In the past decade\, Korean entertainment has gained global recognition\, with Korean movies and TV shows winning Oscars and Emmys\, and K-Pop groups becoming wildly popular. In Manhattan\, Koreatown has become a popular destination for both locals and tourists\, drawing them in with its bars\, restaurants\, and day spas. Jinwon Kim argues that Manhattan’s Koreatown has become a new type of ethnic enclave\, what she dubs a “transclave.” This commercialized ethnic space exists solely for consumption\, leisure\, and entertainment\, and has been shaped by South Korea’s nation-branding strategy\, new economic and cultural strategies\, patterns in Korean migration\, and shifts in tourism and urban policies in New York City. Kim posits that for many consumers in Koreatown\, especially those who are not of Korean descent\, the space has become a commercialized place where transnational culture meets the diverse racial and ethnic mosaic of New York City. Kim emphasizes how the space functions to “brand Korea” as a space to “consume ethnicity\,” reflecting the landscape of South Korea’s consumer culture through the physical appearance of buildings and stores and the inclusion of franchise brands. \nIn this talk\, Kim explores the recent popularity of Korean food in New York City by focusing on both transnational and domestic factors\, leading to the new trend of commercialization of ethnic food\, emphasis on authenticity\, and rise of the omnivore society\, by delivering the voices of ordinary people. While Koreatown’s authenticity has been largely defined by commercialized ethnic cuisine by local entrepreneurs\, the Korean government\, and franchises\, Kim argues that Koreatown’s authenticity has represented the collective imaginations and narratives of various consumer groups–Korean nationals\, Korean Americans\, and non-Koreans. \nThis program will be recorded then released on October 1. \nJinwon Kim is Assistant Professor of Sociology at Smith College. She is the author of Koreatown\, NYC: The Consumption of a Transnational Brand and a co-editor of Koreatowns: Exploring the Economics\, Politics\, and Identities of Korean Spatial Formations.

SUMMARY:icchā by Barkha Patel Dance Co.
DESCRIPTION:icchā is an interdisciplinary solo kathak work by barkha patel dance co\, presented by Tribeca Performing Arts Center. \nicchā weaves original music\, film\, and set design with the Gujarati folk form garba to explore a question that many carry quietly: who do we hold within us\, and what do we owe them? \nIn Hindu philosophy\, vasanas (unfulfilled longings) are believed to survive the body and pass through bloodlines as living desire\, or icchā. In this work\, barkha is visited by her maternal ancestors in a dream\, women shaped by survival\, loss\, intimacy\, and the denial of dance and embodied selfhood. She becomes the vessel to express what they could not. \nIt’s a rare\, embodied meditation on matrilineal memory that honors the women whose stories often go unrecorded and untold. It reclaims dance and the body as sites of cultural inheritance\, at a moment when many South Asian diaspora communities are actively reckoning with what’s been lost and what’s worth reclaiming. It also offers a shared language\, ancestral reverence\, for audiences to process their own family histories together.

SUMMARY:HOME: Kinetic Roots
DESCRIPTION:About the Work  \nHome is not a fixed place\, but a space that continues to be created through the time and memories we have lived through\, and through the relationships we form with the people we meet along the way. \nBodies and sounds originating from different places and times follow the sensations of movement and memory\, departure and staying. \nBody and object\, music and poetry look at the same journey through different languages. \nThrough beings who move with memories of the past\, form relationships in unfamiliar spaces\, stay for a while\, and then leave again\, the work asks questions about the places where we stay and the relationships we create. \nPART 1. \nThe Body of the Past \nThe body exists in the present while carrying traces of time already lived. Images and objects call up the past; the body walks\, looks\, repeats and transforms\, moving between past and present. \nPART 2. \nHome in Relation \nDifferent bodies and sounds enter an emptied space. Poetry\, music and movement respond to one another\, creating temporary relationships and\, for a moment\, a home. \nSeptember 25 – 26\, 2026 at 7:30 PM

Over the next decade\, New York City and the Trust for Governors Island plan to expand this seasonal initiative toward year-round permanent homes for cultural organizations on the Island. \nAgainst this extraordinary setting between the waters of New York Harbor and the city skyline\, the Bangladeshi American Artists Forum (BAAF) has been presenting Between River and Harbor: Stories That Carry Us\, a multidisciplinary cultural program exploring migration\, memory\, identity\, belonging\, and the ways stories travel across generations and borders. \nThis fall\, curated by Kaiser Kamal and Kyoko Sato\, the program transforms one of Governors Island’s historic houses into a space of encounter—a place where personal histories\, ancestral memories\, artistic practices\, and different cultural perspectives can meet and resonate with one another. \nA significant new dimension of this fall’s program is BAAF’s collaboration with New York–based curator Kyoko Sato\, with the support by the Art Incubation Association of Japan\, which brings artists from Japan into the Governors Island program for the first time. This collaboration expands the conversation beyond a single diasporic experience and creates a broader dialogue between Bangladeshi American and Japanese artistic perspectives.

SUMMARY:MOCA PERFORMS – Wonggongchang Mega Explosive
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Chinese in America proudly presents Wonggongchang Mega Explosive\, the second full-length album by Taiwanese composer\, electronic musician\, and producer Calvin Kaiˇ-Weiˉ Chang\, a.k.a Kaiwei. \nSet for 2026 release under AAPI artist collective Choaspace\, Wonggongchang Mega Explosive is a ten-track sonic narrative and song cycle centered on one of the deadliest man-made disasters in Chinese history: the 1626 Tianqi Explosion\, with over 20\,000 casualties. Drawing from ancient Chinese classical texts and historical documentations\, each piece reimagines anecdotal episodes from the event\, unfolding in a format influenced by anthological drama\, film and video game soundtracks. Through a contemporary lens\, the work integrates found sounds\, text-to-speech\, and Y2K-influenced sonic cues for explorations of artificiality\, emotional detachment\, and modern desensitization to large-scale violence in the age of information overload. \nAccompanied by live Mandarin narration\, texts\, and animations drawn by Taiwanese graphic artist Nancy Hsiaowen Hu\, the performance invites audiences to experience history\, through modern perspectives\, as a living\, resonant field shaped by sound\, story\, and interpretation. \nABOUT Tianqi Explosion \n\nThe Wanggongchang Explosion (also known as the Tianqi Explosion) was a catastrophic disaster that occurred on May 30\, 1626\, in Beijing during the late Ming Dynasty. Centered at a major gunpowder factory and armory\, the blast destroyed a large area of the city and reportedly killed around 20\,000 people. \nContemporary accounts describe a sudden rumbling sound\, followed by a massive explosion that flattened buildings within a radius of about 2 kilometers\, sent debris flying across the city\, and was felt over 150 kilometers away. \nThe exact cause of the explosion remains unknown. While many believe it was an accidental gunpowder detonation\, other theories—including a meteor airburst or natural gas explosion—have been proposed\, with no definitive consensus. \nBeyond the immediate destruction\, the disaster had major political and cultural consequences. It was widely interpreted at the time as a form of divine punishment\, weakening confidence in the Tianqi Emperor and further destabilizing the already declining Ming Dynasty. \n\nABOUT Calvin Kaiˇ-Weiˉ Chang \n\nKaiwei is the progressive electronic music project of Calvin Kaiˇ-Weiˉ Chang\, a NY-based Taiwanese electronic musician\, composer\, multi-instrumentalist and producer. Active in both NY and East Asia’s contemporary music scenes\, Chang’s style blends Industrial\, Noise\, Ambient\, Dance and Pop\, often explored through experimental techniques\, diverse composition methods\, and innovative forms. Chang’s works often combine a broad range of improvisational vocabularies with non-traditional post-production\, songwriting\, and sound design approaches. Chang composed for director Ichen Wang’s 2022 stage play\, “Dress In Code”. His debut LP\, “Reprocessor” (“darkly invigorating\, glitchy soundscapes\, touting a dynamic range from unsettling spaciousness to dexterous rhythmic haunts\, at times resembling a cross of Burial and Oneohtrix Point Never” – Obscure Sound 2024) was released under Long Echo Records\, 2023. Chang was a 2024 Found Sound Nation – OneBeat Taiwan fellow\, and was most recently a recipient of Taiwan’s National Cultures & Arts Foundation Grant for his production for composer Chloe Yuchun Hu’s 2025 record\, “The Impermanence Of Permanence”. His second LP\, Wonggongchang Mega Explosive\, is due for 2026 release under AAPI artist collective\, Choaspace.
