SUMMARY:Discovery within Tradition: Kimono\, Dance and Music
DESCRIPTION:Japan Performing Arts\, Inc. has been producing “Discovery within Traditions: Kimono\, Dance & Music” as one of our continuing series of Free\n\n\nFor this season (Spring 2025)\, we are featuring “Aizome” dye and “Washi” paper culture from Tokushima Prefecture\, the home of Awa Odori dance. \nNote: \nJPA’s “Discovery within Traditions: Kimono\, Dance & Music – Spring 2025” is our annual Free Public Program. There will be 3:00 pm and 6:30 pm shows (i.e twice on the show date). \nThe doors open at 2:40pm (for the 3pm show) and at 6:10pm (for the 6:30pm show) \nIn order to ensure the seat availability (the theater capacity is limited up to160seats)\, please make sure to make your booking via Eventbrite. Without a booking\, you may not be able to enter the theater. The seats are going to be assigned by first-come\, first-served basis\, so with your booking\, we recommend you to come to the theater early. \nThe show is roughly divided into the parts of: Nihon Buyo\, Kimono Culture\, and Awa Odori. Each has its core cultural values that are important in Japanese culture. The show will explain such essential details. \n\n\n\n\nFor Nihon Buyo\, classical dance pieces of “Seigaiha\,” “Kanda Matsuri\,” and “Ayame Yukata” will be shown together with the explanations of subtle movements of the female dancers in “Ohikizuri” costume. Nihon Buyo is a very unique dance. One of the reasons is the costume of Kimono. If without the costume\, the movements and the dance form could look extremely ridiculous or unnatural. JPA has been aiming to explain such Nihon Buyo details as much as possible. \n  \n\n\n\nFrom about three years ago\, JPA has been giving spotlight on one of the characteristics of kimono costume\, which we have been calling as “Kimono: Tradition of Sustainable Fashion” explaining the eco-friendly aspects of Kimono culture. Many amazing hand-craftsmanship techniques are involved in the art of Kimono. JPA has been paying attention to the lack of succession issues for such craftsmanship in Japan\, so our activities include the introduction of these impressive traditional techniques. At this show\, we will introduce Tokushima Prefecture’s proud “Japan Blue” color “Aizome” dye and “Washi” paper also from Tokushima. \n  \n\n\n\n\nTokushima Prefecture has one of the largest dance festivals in Japan: “Awa Odori.” It is not simply a dance for a festival\, but it is one of the “Bon Odori” dances that are rooted in a Buddhist ritual in the mid-summer season all over Japan. There are “Bon Odori” dances that are commonly danced all over Japan as well as ones very specific from the localities. “Awa Odori” is one of the very unique dances from Tokushima Prefecture. \n  \n\n\nWe’re thrilled to share that Nodoka Yamamura\, a contemporary washi artist born in Tokyo and now based in Tokushima\, will be exhibiting her beautiful works – featuring AIZOME (Indigo)\, SAKURA (Cherry Blossoms)\, and her signature “NODOKA” patterns – outside the venue entrance. Artworks will be available for purchase. She will also be performing in the Awa Odori dance during the event-don’t miss this unique opportunity to experience her artistry in both visual and performance forms! \n\n\n\nThis is a two-our show. There will be a desk at the first floor of Symphony Space theater. Please show your booking confirmation at the desk and enter Leonard Nimoy Theater downstairs. \nSee you at the theater!!

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Katie Kitamura Discusses Audition
DESCRIPTION:Join BPL Presents as Katie Kitamura takes the Dweck stage to discuss Audition\, an exhilarating\, destabilizing Möbius strip of a novel that asks whether we ever really know the people we love. \nTwo people meet for lunch in a Manhattan restaurant. She’s an accomplished actress in rehearsals for an upcoming premiere. He’s attractive\, troubling\, young—young enough to be her son. Who is he to her\, and who is she to him? In this compulsively readable\, brilliantly constructed novel\, two competing narratives unspool\, rewriting our understanding of the roles we play every day – partner\, parent\, creator\, muse – and the truths every performance masks\, especially from those who think they know us most intimately. Taut and hypnotic\, Audition is Katie Kitamura at her virtuosic best. \nKatie Kitamura‘s most recent prior novel\, A Separation\, was a finalist for the Premio Gregor von Rezzori and a New York Times Notable Book. It was named a best book of the year by over a dozen publications and translated into sixteen languages and is being adapted for film. Her two previous novels\, Gone to the Forest and The Longshot\, were both finalists for the New York Public Library’s Young Lions Fiction Award. A recipient of fellowships from the Lannan Foundation and Santa Maddalena Foundation\, Katie has written for publications including The New York Times\, The Guardian\, Granta\, BOMB Magazine\, Triple Canopy\, and Frieze. She teaches in the creative writing program at New York University.

SUMMARY:Michael Luo and Jill Lepore discuss Strangers in the Land: Exclusion\, Belonging\, and the Epic Story of the Chinese in America
DESCRIPTION:Hybrid Author Talk – Join us online or in-person!\nBeginning in the middle of the nineteenth century\, tens of thousands of Chinese migrated to a distant land they called Gum Shan-–Gold Mountain. Americans initially welcomed these arrivals. Strangers in the Land tells the story of what happened next and into modern times\, revealing anew the complications of our multiracial democracy. \nDrawing on archives from across the country and written with a New Yorker writer’s style and sweep\, Michael Luo’s work is revelatory and unforgettable\, an essential American story. Strangers in the Land follows the Chinese from their early gold-rush years to modern times; as their numbers grew\, horrific episodes of racial terror erupted. At the book’s heart is a shameful chapter of American history: the brutal driving out of Chinese residents from towns across the American West. Luo documents the terror’s victims\, the resultant activism\, and the resilience of communities that persisted in the face of bigotry and persecution. Only in 1965 did America’s gates swing open to people like Luo’s parents\, immigrants from Taiwan. Today there are more than twenty-two million people of Asian descent in the United States and yet the “stranger” label remains\, says Luo\, who will present this history with illustrations before a discussion with the acclaimed American historian and fellow New Yorker writer Jill Lepore. \nMichael Luo is an executive editor at The New Yorker and writes regularly for the magazine on politics\, religion\, and Asian American issues. He joined The New Yorker in 2016. Before that\, he spent thirteen years at the New York Times\, as a metro reporter\, national correspondent\, and investigative reporter and editor. He is a recipient of a George Polk Award and a Livingston Award for Young Journalists. \nJill Lepore is the David Woods Kemper ’41 Professor of American History at Harvard University and Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. She is also a staff writer at The New Yorker. A prize-winning professor\, she teaches classes in evidence\, historical methods\, humanistic inquiry\, and American history. Much of her scholarship explores absences and asymmetries in the historical record. She is a wide-ranging and prolific essayist and the author of many award-winning books including These Truths: A History of the United States and The Deadline\, a collection of essays. We the People: A History of the U.S. Constitution\, will be published in September. \nPresented in partnership with Porter Square Books\, Boston Public Library\, and My China Roots.

SUMMARY:Pivotal Moments: An AAPI Community Story Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In this Miro board activity\, participants explore a timeline of Asian and Pacific Islander (API) history to ground themselves in the broader context of community evolution and resilience. The timeline highlights key historical moments\, movements\, and milestones that have shaped API identities and collective experiences. Participants then reflect on where their own stories intersect with this history\, adding personal moments\, family narratives\, or turning points to the timeline. This shared visual becomes a living document that illustrates how individual journeys are woven into the fabric of a larger communal narrative. Through guided discussion\, participants deepen their understanding of how history informs identity\, belonging\, and the ongoing shaping of API communities.

But instead\, things in the Vale begin to go wrong: The sunlight is fading. A beautiful girl appears from nowhere. A wizard is stealing from the Vale’s inhabitants. And the strangest part of all is that none of this is the young inventor’s doing. \nCan Bran and Gnomly uncover the truth of what is happening before both their worlds are destroyed? \nAbout The Vale — Origins \nA grieving inventor family comes together through their son’s creativity in a virtual fantasy world of their own creation. \n\nStarring: Three-time Tony Award winner Lea Salonga\nDirected by: Abigail Hing Wen\nAnimation Director: John Aoshima (Ultraman: Rising)\n\nThe Vale — Origins\, a prequel short film\, follows the Lee family\, a grieving group of inventors in Silicon Valley who discover solace and reconnection through their young son’s creativity in The Vale\, a virtual reality fantasy world they built together. SUMMARY:The Condition of Being Near: Ecologies of Afro-Asia Dialogues
DESCRIPTION:Artists\, writers\, & organizers to consider the breadth of political & social solidarities connecting Black\, African\, & Asian diasporas.\n\n\nThis series of dialogues lead up to the 2026 exhibition The Condition of Being Near (CoBN)\, co-curated by Zairong Xiang\, Associate Professor of Comparative Literature and Director of Arts (Duke Kunshan University) and Denise Ryner\, Andrea B. Laporte Curator (ICA Philadelphia). The exhibition will examine the nuanced conditions and operations of south-south solidarity through the lens of a series of global acupuncture points of Afro-Asian culture\, history and relationships. \nCoBN invites artists\, writers and community organizers to consider the wide breadth of political and social solidarities connecting Black\, African\, and Asian diasporas across North America\, the Caribbean\, and Asian and African regions. What can historical and contemporary visual cultures tell us about transracial and trans-regional Afro-Asian “stand-ins”; or networked exchanges built on astute pragmatism\, community proximity\, or survival economies under colonial and post-colonial re-ordering\, marginalization\, and erasure? \nThese dialogues draw together the perspectives of a range of writers\, curators and artists to think broadly about known and lesser-known south-south community and regional ecologies\, influences\, and networks across industry\, mass culture\, the arts\, and political thought. \nThis event will take place at Performance Space NYC. The address is below: \n150 1st Avenue #4th floor \nNew York\, NY 10009 United States \n  \nSchedule-At-A-Glance\nFriday\, May 9\, 2025 from 12:00 – 8:00 PM \n12:50 – Opening Remarks by Denise Ryner Andrea B. Laporte Curator (ICA Philadelphia)\, and Denise Ferreira Da Silva\, Samuel Rudin Professor in the Humanities\, Department of Spanish and Portuguese Languages and Literatures (NYU) \n1:00-2:00pm – Open Research Session with Zifeng Liu (HKBU\, Hong Kong)\, Christian Nyampeta (artist based in New York)\, Lee Xie (NYU) \n2:15-3:50pm – Roundtable Discussion: Afro-Asian Political Economy and Artistic Ecologies Across the Americas and the Caribbean with Michaeline A. Crichlow (Duke University\, Durham)\, Richard Drayton (Kings College London)\, and Aaron Kamugisha (Smith College\, Massachusetts)\, moderated by Denise Ferreira Da Silva. \n4:00-5:30pm – Roundtable Discussion: Curating Afro-Asia Roundtable Discussion with Nikita Yingqian Cai (Times Museum\, Guangzhou)\, Michelle Yeonho Hyun (ICA Shanghai) and Tao Leigh Goffe (Hunter College\, CUNY )\, moderated by Denise Ryner (ICA Philadelphia/CRACS Co-Lab Curatorial Fellow) \n6:00-7:00pm – Joan Kee and Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons in Conversation \n7:15 – 8:00 PM – Performance: Nothing #9: Yes + No by Autumn Knight \nMore details on the sessions and speaker bios can be found here. \n  \nAccessibility\nPerformance Space New York is located at 150 First Avenue at the corner of 9th Street in Manhattan.
