SUMMARY:King of the Yees
DESCRIPTION:For nearly twenty years\, Larry Yee has been the heart and soul of the Yee Fung Toy Family Association\, a fraternal organization in San Francisco’s iconic Chinatown. But to his daughter Lauren\, a playwright living in New York\, the association is an obsolete relic of a vanishing world. When Larry suddenly disappears\, Lauren sets off on a wild quest to find him\, embarking on a surreal\, magical journey through the history and myths of her own lineage. KING OF THE YEES is a hilarious and heartfelt “kind of true” story by Signature resident artist Lauren Yee\, who turns her incisive comedic eye on what we inherit and what it means to truly be a Yee.  \n \nAbout the Playwright \n \nLAUREN YEE is proud to be a Signature Theatre resident playwright. She is an award-winning playwright\, screenwriter\, and librettist based in New York City. Prior to the pandemic\, Lauren was named by American Theatre as the second-most-produced playwright of that upcoming season. Recent plays include Cambodian Rock Band with music by Dengue Fever (South Coast Rep\, Oregon Shakespeare Festival\, La Jolla Playhouse\, Signature Theatre\, East West Players)\, The Great Leap (Denver Center\, Seattle Rep\, Atlantic Theatre\, Steppenwolf\, American Conservatory Theatre)\, King of the Yees (Goodman Theatre\, Center Theatre Group)\, and Mother Russia (Seattle Rep\, Signature Theatre\, upcoming at Hampstead Theatre\, South Coast Rep\, Trinity Rep). She is writing the book for the musical adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time\, with music and lyrics by Heather Christian. Honors include the Doris Duke Artists Award\, Whiting Award\, Steinberg/ATCA Award\, American Academy of Arts and Letters literature award\, Horton Foote Prize\, Kesselring Prize\, Primus Prize\, a Hodder Fellowship at Princeton\, and the #1 and #2 plays on the 2017 Kilroys List. TV: ”Pachinko” (Apple)\, “Soundtrack” (Netflix)\, “Interior Chinatown” (Hulu)\, “Billions” (Showtime)\, “Clipped” (FX). She’s previously developed pilots for Netflix and Apple and is currently developing TV and feature projects for Netflix and Universal. BA: Yale\, MFA: UCSD. laurenyee.com

SUMMARY:Gen’ichirō Inokuma’s NYC Salon
DESCRIPTION:Gen’ichirō Inokuma’s NYC Salon is the first New York solo museum exhibition of the Japanese modern artist Gen’ichirō Inokuma (1902–1993). Organized by Japan Society Gallery in collaboration with the Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art (MIMOCA) in Marugame\, Japan\, the exhibition explores Inokuma’s paintings shown at the Willard Gallery and various multimedia works created during his twenty-year residence in NYC (1955–1975). Along with important holdings from MIMOCA\, the exhibition presents Inokuma’s works in the Japan Society collection and the recently discovered Hirose Family Collection. \nInokuma’s Manhattan sojourn was shaped by meaningful connections with the American avant-garde: Jasper Johns\, Mark Rothko\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Alexander Calder\, David Smith\, Isamu Noguchi\, Yoko Ono\, John Cage\, Merce Cunningham\, and many others. Inokuma and his wife\, Fumiko\, also served as a social and cultural bridge between American and visiting Japanese artists and architects\, often hosting gatherings at their New York apartments. The exhibition features photographs\, film footage\, and ephemera documenting these artistic interactions. \nBy illuminating Inokuma’s little-known role in postwar American art history\, NYC Salon brings new insights into New York City’s mid-20th-century art world—both its collaborative artistic atmosphere\, and its vibrant international social scene \nTimed Tickets: $20 Nonmembers\, $15 Students and seniors \nGallery Exhibition Hours\n\nTuesdays-Fridays: 11 am-5 pm\n\n\nSaturdays & Sundays: noon-6 pm\n\n\nFree First Fridays: 5 pm-7 pm*\n\n\n*October 9\, 2026; November 6\, 2026; December 4\, 2026\, January 8\, 2027

SUMMARY:Puppet Theater: Kojiki de Creation
DESCRIPTION:CONTEMPORARY PUPPET THEATER | WORLD PREMIERE \nThursday\, October 15 at 7:30 pm—Followed by a Private Gathering for Artists and Members\nFriday\, October 16 at 7:30 pm—Preceded by a Pre-Performance Lecture\nSaturday\, October 17 at 7:30 pm—Preceded by a Pre-Performance Lecture\nSunday\, October 18 at 2:30 pm—Followed by an Artist Q&A \nFollowing the acclaim of 2022’s 9000 Paper Balloons\, New York-based puppeteer Maiko Kikuchi returns to Japan Society with Kojiki de Creation — a world premiere animating the gods\, islands\, critters and howling chaos of the Kojiki\, Japan’s oldest mythological chronicle. As a lone reader opens the book\, an ancient world erupts from its pages onto the stage: Kikuchi fashions fearsome Shinto gods from everyday objects and draws primordial creatures into being before your eyes. The result is a theatrical conjuring of the birth of Japan itself — assembled\, with characteristic whimsy\, from paper\, ink and imagination. \nOn Friday\, October 16 and Saturday\, October 17\, a pre-performance lecture on Japanese creation myths and the Kojiki begins at 6:30 pm.

The entire program will be broadcast live on video at Pioneer Works’ YouTube\, WKCR 89.9 FM in NYC (audio only) and podcast at NYC Radio Live. \nFor the 2026 festival\, more than 50 artists and legendary maestros of the South Asian classical tradition will perform alongside groundbreaking contemporary artists in a musical journey through day and night. \nThe full lineup will be announced on September 9. Early bird tickets will go on sale to the public on Wednesday\, July 22 at 10 AM ET. \nTo have access to the presale\, you must be a PW Member. If you are a member and have not received a code\, please reach out to members@pioneerworks.org to receive an access code to the presale. To become a Member\, please visit this link. \nAbout Ragas Live Festival \nRagas Live Festival was born as an in-studio radio broadcast at Columbia University’s radio station\, WKCR\, in 2012 and immediately gained a global listening audience. The annual presentation of 50-70 musicians\, and its expansive presentation of music inspired by the Indian classical tradition\, became central to a musical movement that The New York Times\, The New Yorker\, NPR\, and others have called “The Raga Renaissance.” The event first left the studio and became a live\, in-person broadcast in 2016 at Pioneer Works\, where it has since grown a passionate following. \nThe event is inspired by raga\, the classical music tradition from South Asia\, where specific modes harmonize with the moods and energy of particular times of day\, such as sunrise\, sunset\, or the darkest hours of the night. Master musicians from the raga tradition are presented alongside legends in ambient music\, minimalism\, jazz\, and global traditions. \nRagas Live Festival is produced by Pioneer Works in collaboration with NYC Radio Live\, with the support of The Society for Arts and Culture of South Asia (Palo Alto) and The 4J Family Foundation. \nCommunity Partners: AHT Productions\, Brooklyn Raga Massive\, People of Rhythm Productions. Ragas Live Festival is sponsored\, in part\, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs\, administered by Brooklyn Arts Council as well as the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

SUMMARY:2026 Midterms - Election Protection and Filipino American History Month
DESCRIPTION:Happy Filipino American History Month! Many of us do not realize that Filipino American history is made throughout the year in everyday life. \nWith the recent addition of Tagalog as a language required to be made accessible on voting ballots and voting instructions at NYC polling precincts\, the Filipino community is now recognized by the City of New York as a significant and important political force. This is history being made! \nVoting rights for Filipinos and other immigrant voters need to be protected. You may not notice\, but regular people protect these rights during every election. \nThe Asian American Legal Defense & Education Fund (@aaldef) has been training and organizing volunteers to protect voting rights at the polls for decades. \nJoin us for a brief presentation by AALDEF about their Election Protecton initiatives and how you can help on Tuesday\, October 20th at 5:30 pm at CBIZ (730 Third Ave.\, NYC). \nThis is a FREE event where dinner will be served. Registration is required (use QR code in 1st pic). You need not be a lawyer or Filipino to attend this event or volunteer to protect voting rights. There will be an opportunity for networking before and after the presentation. \nEarly voting in NYC starts on October 24th\, and Election Day is November 3rd. AALDEF needs as many volunteers possible for the upcoming election. So we hope to see you at CBIZ on October 20th for this event. \nOn behalf of the Filipino American Legal Defense & Education Fund (@faldefinc)\, we are proud to partner with AALDEF\, the Filipino American Lawyers Association of New York (@falanewyork)\, and CBIZ for this important event and initiative.

SUMMARY:Book Launch | Needlemouth by K-Ming Chang
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE BOOK \nFrom the award-winning author of Bestiary\, three cousins are forced to complete an impossible and violent task set by a vengeful demon. \nCousins Cindy\, Yangyang\, and Mandy’s hot\, tedious summer unfolds in their grandmother’s hauntingly familiar house. Mandy\, the eldest\, seeks connection online and exchanges emails with a stranger. Yangyang\, the youngest\, retreats into her own imagination in search of meaning. But every morning Cindy wakes with strange objects in her mouth: a button\, a berry\, a coin. \nOne night\, a starved figure with a mouth the size of a needle-tip appears at Cindy’s bedside. She is hunger-afflicted\, a demon with no descendants to feed from: she is Needlemouth. Part vampire\, part hungry ghost\, Needlemouth forces the girls into a grim task to end a man’s life. \nCindy\, Yangyang\, and Mindy are plunged in and out of the demon realm\, where they are called to break out of the indifference and numbness of their claustrophobic worlds\, and where they are met with the most rageful and resistant parts of themselves. In a quest to satisfy the demon’s hunger\, they unravel their shared grief and reckon with the cyclical violence that shaped their family. For readers of Akwaeke Emezi and Carmen Maria Machado\, K-Ming Chang has crafted a reimagined coming of age novel that asks: what does it mean to become the monster instead of slaying it? \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nK-Ming Chang is a Lambda Literary Award winner\, a National Book Foundation 5 Under 35 honoree\, a Kundiman Fellow\, and an O. Henry Prize Winner. She is the author of the novel BESTIARY (One World/Random House\, 2020)\, which was shortlisted for the Faulkner Award and longlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize\, the VCU Cabell First Novelist Award\, and the Otherwise Award. In 2021\, her chapbook BONE HOUSE was published by Bull City Press. Her story collection GODS OF WANT (One World/Random House) won a Lambda Literary Award\, and her books have been translated into Spanish\, Chinese\, Korean\, German\, Turkish\, and other languages. Her most recent books are ORGAN MEATS (One World\, 2023) and a novella titled CECILIA (Coffee House Press\, 2024). In 2026\, she will be making her YA debut with STRAIGHT TO THE SOURCE\, a romance forthcoming from Holiday House\, and her second YA project\, a novel-in-verse titled GIRL GODS\, will be forthcoming from Kokila (Penguin Random House) in 2027. Her writing is most frequently described as “not for everybody” and occasionally described as “for the freaks.” \nIN CONVERSATION WITH \nAlice Evelyn Yang is a Chinese American writer from Norfolk\, Virginia based in New York. Her debut novel\, A Beast Slinks Towards Beijing\, is out now from William Morrow and DeadInk Books. Her shorter work is published in Michigan Quarterly Review\, Apogee\, The Rumpus\, and AAWW’s The Margins\, among others. She is the recipient of the 2022-23 Jesmyn Ward Prize from MQR. Her work explores themes of environmental racism\, immigration\, intergenerational trauma\, and critical fabulation. She is at work on a second novel.

SUMMARY:Books in Conversation: Jiyoung Hand and Alice Evelyn Yang
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to an evening of books and humanitarian fundraising on October 21st. \nThroughout our publication season\, we noticed our titles in conversation with another: A Beast Slinks Towards Beijing and Honey in the Wound both share themes of anti-imperialism and magical realism as a means to explore intergenerational trauma and the legacy of Japanese colonialism. We wanted to use our books and platform to fundraise for the @rescueorg’s global humanitarian work\, for while our fictional characters remain in history\, the horrors of war they faced continue to affect many people today.
