SUMMARY:Yoshitaka Amano: Origins at the American Academy of Arts and Letters
DESCRIPTION:Yoshitaka Amano (b. 1952\, Shizuoka\, Japan) creates worlds. It’s something he’s done since he was fifteen\, when he moved to Tokyo and began working as a character designer for an anime studio. There\, drawing was always an act of translation. His task was to convert narrative into illustrated concepts\, drawings that would become the connective tissue of a fictional universe. Throughout his career as an independent artist and as a character designer for storied anime and video game franchises\, such as Final Fantasy and Vampire Hunter D\, drawing has always been a way of describing the porousness between the real and the fantastic. “I want to depict a world I myself have never seen\,” Amano says of the feeling from which his work begins. \nOrigins 始源 takes up Amano’s interest in primordial beginnings. Over the last few years\, Amano has been absorbed in Greek and Shinto mythology\, making drawings of the characters that animate these stories. Here\, he presents Pandora\, a series of drawings of the Greek myth of the first mortal woman; they circle the gallery like an ancient frieze\, or the storyboards for an animation. Alongside these works\, a selection of illustrations\, animation\, and popular materials from the 1980s and ’90s\, including the anime film Angel’s Egg and sensual depictions of The Tale of Genji\, is presented in our library. In all the stories Amano is drawn to\, origins are an eternal structure\, a threshold where being emerges. For him\, that threshold is the page; his figures seem to move and drift across its surface\, entering into worlds that exist beyond our lived reality. \nThis exhibition\, Amano’s first institutional solo show in New York\, offers a chance to encounter an artist whose drawings continue to have extended lives in the world around us. Right now\, more likely than not\, you could find them appearing on someone’s gaming console as they play Final Fantasy and livestream it to Twitch; on a Gatchaman Uniqlo tee worn in the streets of Tokyo; or even on an iPhone as someone watches Angel’s Egg on the subway\, in bed\, or really anywhere streaming is available. \nArts and Letters commissioned an essay\, Shining Genji\, by Sean Thor Conroe\, which accompanies the exhibition as part of our Reader series.

SUMMARY:SLEEPLESS NIGHT
DESCRIPTION:Chinese American Counci is pleased to present SLEEPLESS NIGHT\, a solo exhibition by Xuhong Shang\, on view from October 2 through October 23. \n\n\n\n\nSLEEPLESS NIGHT is an exhibition that explores the unstable boundary between reality and dream\, presence and absence\, movement and confinement. Through installation\, photographic fragments\, painting\, video\, sound\, and spatial intervention\, Xuhong Shang creates an environment where perception is interrupted and certainty becomes fragile. \nThe exhibition is centered around the single-channel video Sleepless Night and expands into a physical installation composed of dark surfaces\, fragmented images\, linear structures\, and layered visual interruptions. The exhibition suggests a space where images appear partially concealed\, crossed\, taped\, and suspended within a field of darkness. These elements create a visual rhythm of obstruction and passage\, suggesting windows\, routes\, barriers\, memories\, and psychological thresholds. The viewer is invited not only to look at the work\, but to move through a condition of uncertainty. \nThe title SLEEPLESS NIGHT evokes a state of wakefulness between consciousness and dream. In this in-between condition\, time becomes stretched\, thoughts become fragmented\, and ordinary images take on emotional and symbolic weight. The exhibition reflects this mental space through fractured compositions\, grayscale imagery\, and stark contrasts between light and shadow. The visible world appears unstable\, as if caught between documentation and imagination. \nThe dark wall surface may be understood as a night sky\, an interior void\, or a psychological field. Across this darkness\, white strip boards cut through the canvas images and extend outward into the surrounding space. These sharp white lines suggest lightning crossing the night\, sudden flashes of thought\, or cracks breaking through the surface of memory. They connect the images while also damaging and disrupting them\, creating a tension between illumination and rupture. As the strips move from image to dark space\, they become more than formal devices; they operate as psychological forces\, exposing the instability of perception and the fragile condition of the mind during sleeplessness. \nTravel\, architecture\, and transitional spaces emerge as recurring visual references. Airplanes\, airport-like structures\, passages\, and abstracted silhouettes suggest movement across distance\, yet this movement is never fully free. Instead\, it is crossed by interruptions\, invisible borders\, and psychological weight. The white linear forms may be read as paths\, fractures\, signals\, restrictions\, or flashes of anxiety. They point toward direction and disorientation at the same time. \nIn Shang’s work\, ambiguity functions as a space of possibility. Rather than presenting a fixed narrative\, SLEEPLESS NIGHT asks viewers to confront the uncertain nature of perception itself. The exhibition reflects on how memory\, migration\, globalization\, and cultural experience shape the way we understand reality. It questions how images carry traces of personal and collective history\, and how the intangible forces of dream\, anxiety\, nostalgia\, and desire can become physically present within space. \nThe video Sleepless Night\, a single-channel work with sound\, becomes both an anchor and an atmosphere for the exhibition. Its duration suggests an intimate encounter with time\, while its presence extends the installation into a psychological and sensory field. Sound and moving image deepen the feeling of suspended consciousness\, placing the viewer within a state where the real and the imagined overlap. \nUltimately\, SLEEPLESS NIGHT is an exhibition about uncertainty as a condition of contemporary life. It invites viewers into a contemplative space where images are incomplete\, meanings remain open\, and the familiar becomes strange. Between darkness and light\, movement and stillness\, dream and reality\, the exhibition asks: what remains visible when certainty disappears?

SUMMARY:MOCA PERFORMS – Echoes of Arrival: Becoming
DESCRIPTION:Immigration is never a single arrival but an ongoing process of becoming. Beyond legal status and paperwork\, immigrants navigate displacement\, alienation\, adaptation\, and the long\, sometimes complicated journey toward belonging. What did you have to learn to survive and build a life in the United States? What did you choose to carry with you from the culture you came from? What was lost in translation? And what new part of yourself emerged along the way? \nEchoes of Arrival returns to the Museum of Chinese in America for a new iteration\, Becoming. Through a collection of personal stories\, the ensemble explores the many ways immigrants remake themselves while making a life in a new country. These stories of change\, resilience\, loss\, discovery\, and belonging illuminate how immigration does not simply transform individuals. It continues to shape the rich and ever-evolving cultural fabric of the United States. \nCREATIVE TEAM\nConceived by Dennis Yueh-Yeh Li\nDevised & Performed by Shan Y. Chuang\, Nikkiesha N. SUMMARY:Meet & Greet | Sophia Lee Can Fly by Marie Tang
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE BOOK \nBubbly\, bobbly\, and bold Sophia Lee is always doing the opposite of what her grandparents want her to do! When she tries something new and a little bit scary\, Sophia learns that the support of her loved ones might just be what gives her courage. \nSophia Lee is messy where her grandparents are tidy. She’s rambunctious where her grandparents are calm. She’s always looking for an adventure where her grandparents are careful. When the circus comes to town\, Sophia decides that her next adventure will be to become a trapeze artist! Gong Gong and Po Po aren’t so sure-Sophia doesn’t eat enough vegetables! She might get hurt! So Sophia shows Gong Gong and Po Po just how tough she is and convinces them to let her try. But once Sophia gets to the trapeze school and sees just how tall the ladder is\, doubt begins to creep in. With a little encouragement\, Sophia is able to find her courage and learn what it takes to fly. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nCosmopolitan life defines Marie Tang in many ways. Born in Hong Kong\, raised in New York City\, and a resident of Shanghai for over a decade (before moving back to the States in 2020)\, she draws much of her inspiration from the unique characters and neon lights of the\n“Big City.” While teaching literacy to kindergarteners\, she recognized the correlation between reading aloud to children and future reading ability. She is dedicated to spreading this message to parents and caregivers. Marie proudly tells tales of grit\, tenacity\, compassion\, and Asian culture. She is the author of Yuna’s Cardboard Castles (Beaming Books)\, Baba’s Peach Tree (Random House Studio)\, and Sophia Lee Can Fly (Disney Hyperion) the first in a two-book series. Yuna’s Cardboard Castles was named a Virginia Readers’ Choice Book for 2025–2026. Her forthcoming books include The Big Jump (Random House Studio)\, arriving in summer 2027\, and the recently announced Belly Takes the Bus (Random House Studio).

SUMMARY:Escaping North Korea and becoming a full-time Entertainer with Charles Ryu
DESCRIPTION:Charles’ story has been featured in news media worldwide including The Daily Mail\, The Mirror\, South China Morning Post\, PBS\, A Plus\, and John Stossel. \nThe venue has a cash-only bar. \nBorn in North Korea\, Ryu has described a childhood marked by extreme hunger and homelessness. As a teenager\, he fled North Korea for China\, was captured and forcibly returned\, and says he endured detention and forced labor before eventually escaping a second time. He later received refugee status and resettled in the United States\, where he built a new life from scratch. \nToday\, Ryu has transformed those experiences into an unusual form of public education. Through YouTube and social media he goes to the streets with a segment called “Ask a North Korean” where he has conversations with strangers. He offers audiences a firsthand perspective on everyday life inside one of the world’s most closed societies. His online work has reached hundreds of millions of views\, and he has spoken at universities including Harvard\, UC Berkeley\, UCLA and USC. In 2026\, UC Berkeley’s Institute of International Studies invited him for an “open and honest conversation about life\, escape\, and starting again.” \nHis story has also attracted international media attention. PBS NewsHour interviewed Ryu about his childhood and his concerns for North Koreans following the 2018 US–North Korea summit\, while Radio Free Asia profiled his journey from North Korean refugee to a prominent social-media voice in the United States. \nAll profits will go to Freedom Bridge Foundation\, his non-profit to support North Korean Refugees.\n@freedombridgefoundation\n@charlesnorthkorea\nhttps://www.youtube.com/@charlesnorthkorea/videos\nhttps://charlesryu.com

SUMMARY:Gen’ichirō Inokuma’s NYC Salon
DESCRIPTION:Gen’ichirō Inokuma’s NYC Salon is the first New York solo museum exhibition of the Japanese modern artist Gen’ichirō Inokuma (1902–1993). Organized by Japan Society Gallery in collaboration with the Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art (MIMOCA) in Marugame\, Japan\, the exhibition explores Inokuma’s paintings shown at the Willard Gallery and various multimedia works created during his twenty-year residence in NYC (1955–1975). Along with important holdings from MIMOCA\, the exhibition presents Inokuma’s works in the Japan Society collection and the recently discovered Hirose Family Collection. \nInokuma’s Manhattan sojourn was shaped by meaningful connections with the American avant-garde: Jasper Johns\, Mark Rothko\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Alexander Calder\, David Smith\, Isamu Noguchi\, Yoko Ono\, John Cage\, Merce Cunningham\, and many others. Inokuma and his wife\, Fumiko\, also served as a social and cultural bridge between American and visiting Japanese artists and architects\, often hosting gatherings at their New York apartments. The exhibition features photographs\, film footage\, and ephemera documenting these artistic interactions. \nBy illuminating Inokuma’s little-known role in postwar American art history\, NYC Salon brings new insights into New York City’s mid-20th-century art world—both its collaborative artistic atmosphere\, and its vibrant international social scene \nTimed Tickets: $20 Nonmembers\, $15 Students and seniors \nGallery Exhibition Hours\n\nTuesdays-Fridays: 11 am-5 pm\n\n\nSaturdays & Sundays: noon-6 pm\n\n\nFree First Fridays: 5 pm-7 pm*\n\n\n*October 9\, 2026; November 6\, 2026; December 4\, 2026\, January 8\, 2027

SUMMARY:An Eye for an Eye Screening & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:An Eye for an Eye\nTanaz Eshaghian and Farzad Jafari\, 2025\, 84 minutes.\nIn Persian with English subtitles. \nAn Eye for an Eye is a documentary that unfolds like a real-life courtroom thriller that pulls you inside a justice system unlike any other — one where the fate of a life doesn’t rest with a judge\, but in the hands of a grieving family who can choose retribution or forgiveness. \nYears after killing her abusive husband in an act of self-defense\, Tahereh now faces execution unless she can pay the Diya — blood money demanded by her abuser’s family. With the clock ticking and public sympathy running low\, her son Mohsen is thrust into a desperate race against time to save his mother’s life\, turning to outside donors in a society where victims of domestic abuse are often met with silence — or scorn. \nDirected by Iranian-American filmmaker Tanaz Eshaghian\, the film unfolds with the intimacy of a family drama and the tension of a thriller\, asking a question that stays with you long after the credits: when forgiveness has a price\, what is a life worth? \nA discussion and Q&A with Director Tanaz Eshaghian will follow the screening.

SUMMARY:Book Launch | Bad Words by Ríoghnach Robinson
DESCRIPTION:Where: New Design H.S.\, 350 Grand St.\, New York (Enter on Ludlow St.)\n\nDoors Open: 6:30PM\nEvent Starts: 7:00PM  \nABOUT THE BOOK \nA sharp and deeply felt debut about art\, ambition\, and the connections that both inspire and undo us. \nParker Navarro’s debut novel was meant to define his career – until critic Selina Chan’s blistering review made it the flop of the decade. Four years later\, his new book is his shot at redemption; for Selina\, reviewing him again is a professional risk she can’t refuse. When her second takedown ignites a viral feud\, both their fortunes shift overnight. But as the literary world feeds on their public sparring\, a quieter dialogue begins – one that challenges everything they thought they knew about success\, sincerity\, and each other. \nBoth incisive and tender\, Bad Words lays bare the costs of creation – the pull between ambition and integrity\, the vulnerability of being seen\, and the unexpected closeness that can grow in the space between critique and care. \nWhen words can make or break us\, how do you stay true to what matters most? \n“The rare kind of book I can’t believe doesn’t already exist . . . [a] clear\, clever voice and incisive social commentary elevate the book’s irresistible will-they-won’t-they romance to a once-in-a-lifetime read about truth\, art\, vulnerability\, and all the sticky places they intersect. BAD WORDS LEFT ME BUZZING.” – EMILY HENRY\, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Great Big Beautiful Life \n“A genre-redefining romance that sets a thrilling new standard… Easily one of my favourites of the year\, if not the decade.” – Carley Fortune\, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Our Perfect Storm \n“Full of blistering barbs\, incisive takedowns and searing gazes\, Bad Words is smart and propulsive.” – Mary H.K. Choi\, New York Times bestselling author of Pool House \n“Full of wit\, warmth\, and deliciously sharp observations on books and the people who love them… I didn’t want it to end.” – Stacey Yu\, author of Kitten \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nRíoghnach (pronounced ree-uh-nock) Robinson grew up in North Carolina\, studied economics at Kenyon College\, and now lives in New York City. Her books for young readers\, including Lambda Award finalist Come Home to My Heart\, are published under the pen name Riley Redgate. She has also written for WEBTOON and The Onion\, America’s Finest News Source. You can find her on Instagram at @rioghnachrobinson. \nIN CONVERSATION WITH \nAnna Maria Volkova lives and works in New York City. Personal family histories from within the former Soviet Union and the Middle East inform her writing\, as do her professional experiences. SUMMARY:COLORS OF KOREA: The Art of Bojagi
DESCRIPTION:The Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY)\, in collaboration with Bojagi Artist Jin Kyung Joung \, founder of RODAM\, presents COLORS OF KOREA: The Art of Bojagi\, a special hands-on workshop exploring the beauty\, creativity\, and everyday versatility of bojagi\, Korea’s traditional wrapping cloth. \nThrough the vibrant colors of saekdong\, the art of wrapping and knotting\, and the distinctive patchwork aesthetics of jogakbo\, participants will discover how Korea’s traditional textile culture combines beauty with practicality and continues to inspire contemporary life. \nFor centuries\, bojagi has been an integral part of everyday life in Korea\, used to wrap\, carry\, store\, and present everything from household objects to meaningful gifts. Beyond its practical purpose\, bojagi embodies a distinctly Korean sense of beauty—transforming a simple piece of fabric through color\, folding\, and knots while reflecting values of care\, thoughtfulness\, and resourcefulness. \nDuring the workshop\, Jin Kyung Joung will introduce participants to the cultural traditions and contemporary possibilities of bojagi through two creative\, hands-on activities. \nParticipants will first explore saekdong\, the vibrant multicolored fabric traditionally associated with Korean clothing and decorative arts. Using colorful saekdong-inspired bojagi\, they will learn wrapping and knotting techniques to transform a simple square of fabric into a beautiful and functional bojagi bag—no sewing required. \nThe workshop will then turn to jogakbo\, the Korean tradition of piecing together small pieces of fabric into harmonious compositions. Participants will select and arrange colorful fabric pieces to create their own jogakbo-inspired envelope\, discovering how even small remnants of fabric can be thoughtfully transformed into something beautiful and useful. \nThrough wrapping\, knotting\, arranging\, and creating\, participants will experience firsthand how traditional Korean textile culture continues to inspire contemporary creativity and everyday living. The workshop also highlights values deeply rooted in bojagi and jogakbo—the thoughtful use and reuse of materials\, creativity through simplicity\, and the discovery of new beauty through color and composition. \nNo previous experience is required\, and all materials will be provided. \nWorkshop Highlights \n\nDiscover the history and cultural significance of bojagi\nExplore the vibrant colors and beauty of saekdong\nLearn practical bojagi wrapping and knotting techniques\nCreate a saekdong-inspired bojagi bag\nDiscover the tradition and aesthetics of jogakbo\nDesign and create a jogakbo-inspired envelope using colorful fabric pieces\nExplore the connection between Korean textile traditions\, creativity\, reuse\, and contemporary life\n\nDATE & TIME:\n– Session #1: Wednesday\, October 7\, 2026 @ 11 AM\n– Session #2: Wednesday\, October 7\, 2026 @ 6 PM\n– Session #3: Thursday October 8\, 2026 @ 6 PM \nADMISSION: Free (Pre-registration required)\n   * Space is limited; advance registration is required.\n   * Due to limited capacity\, participants will be selected through a randomized lottery process. \nAbout the Instructor \nJin Kyung Joung is a bojagi artist and the CEO of RODAM Co.\, Ltd. SUMMARY:MOCA TALKS with William Bialosky
DESCRIPTION:Free Admission \nWhat lies beneath Chinatown? In this illustrated talk\, architect William Bialosky uncovers the remarkable story of Collect Pond\, the freshwater lake that once shaped the physical\, social\, and economic life of Lower Manhattan. \nFor two centuries\, Collect Pond supplied New York City with fresh water. But nearby industries polluted its shores\, and the city began burying the lake in 1802. The resulting unstable and undesirable ground made the land inexpensive\, helping determine who could afford to live there. Over time\, the former pond basin became Five Points and\, later\, part of one of America’s most vital immigrant neighborhoods\, Chinatown. \nBialosky traces this layered history from glacial ice and early Manhattan infrastructure to the formation of Five Points\, the growth of Chinatown\, and the excavations taking place today. Combining architecture\, geology\, and urban history\, the talk reveals how the landscape beneath a neighborhood can shape its future for generations. \nBialosky will also reflect on MOCA’s move from 70 Mulberry Street\, the former Public School 23\, to 215 Centre Street\, the former machine repair shop that artist and architect Maya Lin transformed into MOCA’s current home in 2009. As part of the architectural team\, Bialosky offers a firsthand perspective on the building’s transformation and its continuing place within the changing fabric of Chinatown. \nAbout William Bialosky \nWilliam Bialosky is a registered architect and Senior Principal of Bialosky New York\, Architects. He has practiced in Lower Manhattan since 1988 and holds a Master of Architecture from Yale University\, as well as a Bachelor of Science from the University of Michigan. He has collaborated with the artist Maya Lin for nearly forty years\, and has spent much of his career on the adaptive reuse of nineteenth century buildings in SoHo and TriBeCa\, work that turns on understanding how a building was made and what its site will allow. Since 1990 he has taught design and construction at the Yestermorrow Design/Build School in Vermont. His long interest in the history of Lower Manhattan\, and in how the ground beneath a building shapes what can be built on it\, led to the research behind this talk. He lives and works downtown.

SUMMARY:Book Launch | The Girl Who Became King by Melissa King
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE BOOK \nFrom award-winning chef\, author\, television personality\, and activist Melissa King comes an intimate\, captivating memoir about family\, food\, and finding her voice as a queer Chinese American chef \nEmbracing my love of food has empowered me to embrace every layer of who I am: my Chinese heritage\, my American upbringing\, and all the parts of me that felt too much and not enough. When I chose myself\, I set her free. Just me. The girl who became king. \nAs a kid\, Melissa King lived for the moment she would come from elementary school\, grab her prized Chinese meat cleaver\, and prepare dinner for her family. She already knew cooking was her future\, but she didn’t know how hard she’d have to fight to make that dream a reality. \nGrowing up\, King felt like she was stuck in a box that was only getting smaller. Her Shanghainese and Cantonese immigrant parents had certain expectations—none of which included going to culinary school or falling in love with women. American culture also dictated that kitchens were a man’s world. But trying to live by these rules felt like no life at all. \nDetermined to forge her own path\, she fought her way into the demanding world of Michelin-starred kitchens\, while discovering a home in the queer community. When she entered Top Chef as a reluctant contestant\, inspired by her grandmother’s advice to follow her heart\, she began embracing the flavors\, culture\, and parts of herself she had once forgotten. This journey of self-discovery through food leads her back to her parents\, where love creates room for their strengths and imperfections. \nIn this heartfelt memoir\, Melissa King shows that empowerment comes from embracing all the different ingredients that make up who you are\, and models the hard-won courage it takes to believe in yourself against the odds. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nMelissa King is a James Beard Award-winning chef\, author\, and television personality. She is the author of the cookbook Cook Like a King: Recipes from My California Chinese Kitchen\, which won the 2026 James Beard Award. She is the winner and fan favorite of Bravo’s Top Chef: All Stars L.A. and holds the record for the most challenge wins in the show’s history. Known for her modern California Chinese cuisine\, she is a leading voice shaping conversations through food\, cultural storytelling\, and advocacy.  A queer Shanghainese Cantonese American\, she grew up in Los Angeles’s San Gabriel Valley. Her work has since taken her beyond the kitchen into television\, fashion\, and culture\, including hosting Tasting Wild for National Geographic\, curating the 2022 Met Gala menu\, and being featured in global campaigns for Levi’s and GAP. She lives in San Francisco.

SUMMARY:Sumi-e Japanese Ink Painting Workshop: Chrysanthemum
DESCRIPTION:Japanese Sumi-e (Ink-painting) workshop for beginner and intermediate level \nThe theme for this class is the Chrysanthemum (kiku)\, one of the most beloved subjects in Japanese ink painting and a symbol of autumn and longevity. Students will learn to build the flower’s layered petals with soft\, graded washes\, then finish with the darker\, decisive strokes of the leaves and stem. It is an ideal subject for practicing the balance of light and dark that gives sumi-e its depth. \n\n\n\n“If we study Japanese art\, we see a man who is undoubtedly wise\, philosophic and intelligent\, who spends his time doing what? He studies a single blade of grass.” —Vincent van Gogh \nSumi-e\, also called Suibokuga\, is the art of ink wash-painting. Characteristically an East Asian art\, it has been practiced for well over a thousand years. Sumi-e depicts the spirit or essence of an object or scene rather than its outward appearance — and does so in the fewest possible strokes. Because of this simplicity\, the painter’s character and personality come through in his/her work. In both viewing and creating\, Sumi-e is a very contemplative form of painting. \n\n\n\nIn this class at RESOBOX\, a Japanese cultural center in New York\, all students will start from the basics of ink-wash painting\, such as how to hold a brush. All materials such as ink\, brushes\, and calligraphy paper will be provided. No previous painting experience is required. \n\n\n\nAbout the Instructor \nAyakoh Furukawa (a.k.a Ayakoh Furukawa-Leonart) is a visual artist with a unique background who has mastered Japanese calligraphy and Western painting. She studied with Buddhist calligrapher Sougyu Kashimoto in Osaka\, Japan\, and is currently a member of the Metro New York Sumi-e Society. Besides the RESOBOX Sumi-e class\, she has taught at educational and cultural institutions such as Lyceum Kennedy Japanese School and the Japan Society Summer program. She moved to New York in 2000 and studied Asian Art History at Hunter College\, CUNY\, where she received her Master of Fine Art in Studio Art. Her paintings and drawings have been exhibited internationally. Her deep knowledge of both Western and Asian arts offers an enjoyable experience of the Japanese art of Sumi-e. \n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE: The class sign up deadline is 72 hours before the class begins. Cancellation after this period will NOT be refunded.
