SUMMARY:Moving Rasa Discovery Cards Inside/Outside
DESCRIPTION:Move what’s inside\, outside. Move what’s outside\, inside. \nWhat happens when something you’re carrying inside—a feeling\, question\, image\, memory\, impulse—gets to take shape in the world around you? \nAnd what happens when the world answers back? \nOver six gatherings\, we’ll use the Moving Rasa Discovery Cards to improvise between our inner and outer worlds. We might climb onto something\, lean into another person\, follow the shape of a tree\, move with a wall\, let a card change our attention\, or allow an unexpected impulse to lead somewhere new. \nWe’ll work with group improvisation\, contact\, imagination\, questions\, and the environments we enter. Some gatherings will happen indoors. Others will take us outside into different NYC places. Each environment becomes part of what we discover. \nThere is no movement to get right and no fixed meaning to find in a card. We’ll notice what emerges through the relationships we make—with ourselves\, one another\, the cards\, and the places around us. \nLocation:\nReal World Sculptures: Norman A Rockefellar Park\nRiver Terrace and\, Chambers St\nNew York City\, NY 10282

SUMMARY:Yoshitaka Amano: Origins at the American Academy of Arts and Letters
DESCRIPTION:Yoshitaka Amano (b. 1952\, Shizuoka\, Japan) creates worlds. It’s something he’s done since he was fifteen\, when he moved to Tokyo and began working as a character designer for an anime studio. There\, drawing was always an act of translation. His task was to convert narrative into illustrated concepts\, drawings that would become the connective tissue of a fictional universe. Throughout his career as an independent artist and as a character designer for storied anime and video game franchises\, such as Final Fantasy and Vampire Hunter D\, drawing has always been a way of describing the porousness between the real and the fantastic. “I want to depict a world I myself have never seen\,” Amano says of the feeling from which his work begins. \nOrigins 始源 takes up Amano’s interest in primordial beginnings. Over the last few years\, Amano has been absorbed in Greek and Shinto mythology\, making drawings of the characters that animate these stories. Here\, he presents Pandora\, a series of drawings of the Greek myth of the first mortal woman; they circle the gallery like an ancient frieze\, or the storyboards for an animation. Alongside these works\, a selection of illustrations\, animation\, and popular materials from the 1980s and ’90s\, including the anime film Angel’s Egg and sensual depictions of The Tale of Genji\, is presented in our library. In all the stories Amano is drawn to\, origins are an eternal structure\, a threshold where being emerges. For him\, that threshold is the page; his figures seem to move and drift across its surface\, entering into worlds that exist beyond our lived reality. \nThis exhibition\, Amano’s first institutional solo show in New York\, offers a chance to encounter an artist whose drawings continue to have extended lives in the world around us. Right now\, more likely than not\, you could find them appearing on someone’s gaming console as they play Final Fantasy and livestream it to Twitch; on a Gatchaman Uniqlo tee worn in the streets of Tokyo; or even on an iPhone as someone watches Angel’s Egg on the subway\, in bed\, or really anywhere streaming is available. \nArts and Letters commissioned an essay\, Shining Genji\, by Sean Thor Conroe\, which accompanies the exhibition as part of our Reader series.

SUMMARY:Sonya Rhie Mace in conversation with Molly Emma Aitken
DESCRIPTION:The Tenth Edition of JLF New York continues at the National Arts Club with two blockbuster events. \n\nJLF New York @ NAC \nWith hundreds of thousands of spectators worldwide\, and mini-festivals from Houston to Doha\, India’s iconic Jaipur Literature Festival is known as “the greatest literary show on Earth” (Tina Brown). \nIn conjunction with the Asia Society and the Center for Fiction\, NAC will host the tenth edition of JLF New York\, an international edition of the Jaipur Literature Festival —which celebrates conversation\, bold ideas and exceptional storytelling\, in the voices of speakers ranging from novelist Alka Joshi and curator Sonya Rhie Mace to Oppenheimer biographer Kai Bird. \nSession 1 at 11 a.m. \nPahari Paintings: Art and Stories – Sonya Rhie Mace in conversation with Molly Emma Aitken \nBetween the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries\, the Pahari kingdoms of the northwestern Himalayas created a luminous world of painting—intimate\, expressive and richly coloured. In this richly illustrated session\, celebrated curator Sonya Rhie Mace explores a remarkably dispersed collection that offers new ways of seeing these works. Moving beyond questions of attribution\, the conversation with art historian and professor Molly Emma Aitken\, traces artists\, patrons and practices across regions\, revealing a shared visual culture shaped by movement and exchange. \n\nThis event occurs in person. RSVP does not guarantee entry. Our coat check is limited. Please do not bring any large bags or backpacks.

SUMMARY:Chapal Rani\, the Last Queen of Bengal
DESCRIPTION:A book talk with author Sandip Roy \n\n\nJoin NYU’s Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality for a book talk with author Sandip Roy on Chapal Rani\, the Last Queen of Bengal: The Life and Times of a Female Impersonator \nAs the last great female impersonator of Bengali theater\, Chapal Bhaduri—known as Chapal Rani—once held audiences spellbound in the jatra tradition\, where men became goddesses and heroines. But when women finally took their place on stage\, Chapal found himself exiled from the world he had ruled. In this groundbreaking biography\, Sandip Roy captures the rise and fall of a performer whose art was inseparable from his identity. \nTold in Chapal’s own voice and interwoven with evocative fictional vignettes\, Chapal Rani\, the Last Queen of Bengal brings to life Kolkata’s golden age of theater and the resilience of a man who refused to disappear. Through decades of research and deeply personal interviews\, Roy crafts a moving portrait of gender and belonging. \nSandip Roy is a writer\, columnist and podcaster currently living in Kolkata. He is a columnist for Mint Lounge\, the Hindu and the host of the Sandip Roy Show on Indian Express. His weekly audio dispatches from Kolkata have been airing on public radio KALW in San Francisco since 2012. His work has appeared in publications like the New York Times\, BBC\, the San Francisco Chronicle\, NPR\, the Times of India\, Firstpost\, Huffington Post\, Conde Nast Traveller and other publications. He has been part of anthologies like Out! Stories from the New Queer India\, The Phobic and the Erotic\, Q&A: Queer in Asian America\, Men on Men 6\, Because I Have a Voice\, Story-wallah!\, House Spirit: Drinking in India and Cat People. For more than a decade\, Roy was editor of Trikone\, the world’s oldest magazine on LGBTQ+ South Asian issues. His first novel is Don’t Let Him Know. His latest book is Chapal Rani\, the Last Queen of Bengal – The Life and Times of a Female Impersonator. \nCopies of the book will be sold at the event. The talk will be followed by a catered reception and refreshments. \nNYU campus access guidelines: Registration is required. Non-NYU guests may be asked to present a government-issued photo ID. NYU guests must present their NYU ID. \nAccessibility note: This venue has an elevator and is accessible for wheelchair users. There are single-stall\, all gender restrooms available. SUMMARY:Rea Tajiri's "History and Memory: For Akiko and Takashige"
DESCRIPTION:Filmmaker Rea Tajiri blends interviews\, memorabilia\, and a pilgrimage to the camp where her mother was interned\, ruminating on the difficult nature of representing the past – especially a past that exists outside traditional historic accounts. This 30-minute documentary short will be followed by a discussion between the filmmaker and choreographer Benjamin Akio Kimitch. \nComplimentary drinks and popcorn will be served! \nHosted by the Wythe Hotel Art Program. Curated by Benjamin Akio Kimitch. \nDoors open at 6:30 PM.\nScreening begins at 7:00 PM\, followed by Q&A. \nWythe Hotel Screening Room\n80 Wythe Ave\, Brooklyn\, NY\, 11249 \n(Please use the downstairs speakeasy entrance on Wythe Avenue) \nCapacity is limited. SUMMARY:Book Talk | Mud on the Moon by Nita Noveno
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE BOOK \nMUD ON THE MOON is a hybrid memoir that weaves a daughter’s journey of discovering her Filipino immigrant father’s hidden past with imaginative storytelling\, offering a look into migration\, identity\, and the intergenerational legacies that shape who we are.  \n\n\n\nBorn in Southeast Alaska\, Nita Noveno traces the legacy of her father\, who arrived in the US in 1928 as part of a wave of Filipino men seeking better opportunities through manual labor in agriculture and other industries. The book alternates between Nita’s coming-of-age story and imagined chapters of her father’s life\, revealing the gaps and silences that lie between their experiences. With a blend of personal and historical imagery\, Mud on the Moon offers a rare glimpse into the lives of Filipino immigrants in America. It is a meditation on how family\, memory\, and identity are shaped by the stories we inherit\, both spoken and unspoken\, across generations. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nNita Noveno is the recipient of the 2024 Women’s Prose Prize from Red Hen Press for her hybrid memoir Mud on the Moon\, published in August 2026. Publishers Weekly calls it “a moving blend of autobiography and imagination” and “an auspicious first outing.” A graduate of the MFA Creative Writing Program at The New School\, her creative nonfiction and hybrid work has appeared in MĀNOA\, Hippocampus\, The Margins\, and elsewhere. She teaches creative nonfiction\, composition\, and literature at the Borough of Manhattan Community College\, City University of New York\, and is the founder\, curator\, and host emeritus of Sunday Salon\, a long-running reading series in New York City. Nina is formerly the Programs Director at the Asian American Writers’ Workshop and with Quincy Scott Jones she co-created Blackshop\, a column that thinks about allyship between BIPOC people\, featured on Anomaly. A two-time Asian Women Giving Circle grantee for her workshop\, “No Name Mind: Stories of Mental Health from Asian America\,” she currently teaches at Barnard College and the Manhattanville University MFA in writing program. She is a proud co-founder of the comedy troupe Not Your Biwi Improv.

SUMMARY:2026 Korea on Screen: House of the Seasons (장손)
DESCRIPTION:The Korean Cultural Center New York proudly presents Peafowl as part of its Korea on Screen series—a year-long screening series celebrating the depth and diversity of Korean cinema. Through feature films\, documentaries\, short films\, and independent productions\, the series aims to broaden access to and appreciation of Korean cinema in New York City. \nOh Jung-min’s House of the Seasons begins on a sweltering summer day as three generations of a family gather at their hometown in Daegu for an ancestral memorial rite. Seong-jin’s father has inherited and now runs the family tofu factory\, with other family members helping with the business. What at first appears to be a harmonious family gathering gradually begins to unravel after the memorial rite\, as differing perspectives and long-standing tensions come to the surface. In the midst of the growing conflict\, Seong-jin makes a startling declaration: he has no intention of taking over the family business. Following the lives of this three-generation family with a calm and restrained gaze\, Oh Jung-min reflects on what disappears and what is passed on to the next generation. \nHouse of the Seasons premiered at the 28th Busan International Film Festival\, where it won three awards: the KBS Independent Film Award\, the Aurora Media Award\, and the CGK Award. The film was recognized for its nuanced portrayal of multigenerational family life\, Korean tradition\, and generational conflict. \nTicket: FREE (RSVP REQUIRED)\n * RSVP and seating are first come\, first served.\n* Doors open 30 minutes before showtime.\n* Your tickets will be released to the standby line 10 minutes before the show\, so we recommend you arrive early to secure your seats.

SUMMARY:SLEEPLESS NIGHT
DESCRIPTION:Chinese American Counci is pleased to present SLEEPLESS NIGHT\, a solo exhibition by Xuhong Shang\, on view from October 2 through October 23. \n\n\n\n\nSLEEPLESS NIGHT is an exhibition that explores the unstable boundary between reality and dream\, presence and absence\, movement and confinement. Through installation\, photographic fragments\, painting\, video\, sound\, and spatial intervention\, Xuhong Shang creates an environment where perception is interrupted and certainty becomes fragile. \nThe exhibition is centered around the single-channel video Sleepless Night and expands into a physical installation composed of dark surfaces\, fragmented images\, linear structures\, and layered visual interruptions. The exhibition suggests a space where images appear partially concealed\, crossed\, taped\, and suspended within a field of darkness. These elements create a visual rhythm of obstruction and passage\, suggesting windows\, routes\, barriers\, memories\, and psychological thresholds. The viewer is invited not only to look at the work\, but to move through a condition of uncertainty. \nThe title SLEEPLESS NIGHT evokes a state of wakefulness between consciousness and dream. In this in-between condition\, time becomes stretched\, thoughts become fragmented\, and ordinary images take on emotional and symbolic weight. The exhibition reflects this mental space through fractured compositions\, grayscale imagery\, and stark contrasts between light and shadow. The visible world appears unstable\, as if caught between documentation and imagination. \nThe dark wall surface may be understood as a night sky\, an interior void\, or a psychological field. Across this darkness\, white strip boards cut through the canvas images and extend outward into the surrounding space. These sharp white lines suggest lightning crossing the night\, sudden flashes of thought\, or cracks breaking through the surface of memory. They connect the images while also damaging and disrupting them\, creating a tension between illumination and rupture. As the strips move from image to dark space\, they become more than formal devices; they operate as psychological forces\, exposing the instability of perception and the fragile condition of the mind during sleeplessness. \nTravel\, architecture\, and transitional spaces emerge as recurring visual references. Airplanes\, airport-like structures\, passages\, and abstracted silhouettes suggest movement across distance\, yet this movement is never fully free. Instead\, it is crossed by interruptions\, invisible borders\, and psychological weight. The white linear forms may be read as paths\, fractures\, signals\, restrictions\, or flashes of anxiety. They point toward direction and disorientation at the same time. \nIn Shang’s work\, ambiguity functions as a space of possibility. Rather than presenting a fixed narrative\, SLEEPLESS NIGHT asks viewers to confront the uncertain nature of perception itself. The exhibition reflects on how memory\, migration\, globalization\, and cultural experience shape the way we understand reality. It questions how images carry traces of personal and collective history\, and how the intangible forces of dream\, anxiety\, nostalgia\, and desire can become physically present within space. \nThe video Sleepless Night\, a single-channel work with sound\, becomes both an anchor and an atmosphere for the exhibition. Its duration suggests an intimate encounter with time\, while its presence extends the installation into a psychological and sensory field. Sound and moving image deepen the feeling of suspended consciousness\, placing the viewer within a state where the real and the imagined overlap. \nUltimately\, SLEEPLESS NIGHT is an exhibition about uncertainty as a condition of contemporary life. It invites viewers into a contemplative space where images are incomplete\, meanings remain open\, and the familiar becomes strange. Between darkness and light\, movement and stillness\, dream and reality\, the exhibition asks: what remains visible when certainty disappears?

SUMMARY:MOCA PERFORMS – Echoes of Arrival: Becoming
DESCRIPTION:Immigration is never a single arrival but an ongoing process of becoming. Beyond legal status and paperwork\, immigrants navigate displacement\, alienation\, adaptation\, and the long\, sometimes complicated journey toward belonging. What did you have to learn to survive and build a life in the United States? What did you choose to carry with you from the culture you came from? What was lost in translation? And what new part of yourself emerged along the way? \nEchoes of Arrival returns to the Museum of Chinese in America for a new iteration\, Becoming. Through a collection of personal stories\, the ensemble explores the many ways immigrants remake themselves while making a life in a new country. These stories of change\, resilience\, loss\, discovery\, and belonging illuminate how immigration does not simply transform individuals. It continues to shape the rich and ever-evolving cultural fabric of the United States. \nCREATIVE TEAM\nConceived by Dennis Yueh-Yeh Li\nDevised & Performed by Shan Y. Chuang\, Nikkiesha N. Marking its East Coast debut\, the Brooklyn Museum’s presentation is packed with more than 600 drawings that showcase manga’s immersive power and social impact. Don’t miss this rare opportunity for US audiences to encounter an astonishing selection of original manga artworks\, including examples from beloved series Inuyasha\, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure\, Ōoku: The Inner Chambers\, ONE PIECE\, and many more. \nA global phenomenon\, manga is driven by those who design\, draw\, and very often author the stories that define the medium.
