SUMMARY:YELLOW: An Open Mic Centering Asian Voices
DESCRIPTION:YELLOW is a monthly open mic centering Asian voices. Zoom TBA.\n\n\n“In the West\, yellow’s unsavory status went back centuries…The color grew to represent envy\, jealousy…duplicity…and cowardice. \nYellow was a contemptible color in the Western imagination\, and it fit snugly with the Western idea of the Oriental human being\, especially as he became a threat first to the American workingman\, then to the chaste American woman\, and finally to Western civilization itself. \n– Excerpts from “Big Little Man” by Alex Tizon \n  \nFor Asians\, yellow represents soil & earth\, life\, resistance\, courage\, rebirth\, revolution\, & unity. \nWe are reclaiming and rewriting all narratives that undermine the richness and complexity of Asian individuals\, cultures\, traditions\, & longing. Join us in amplifying and celebrating Asian heritage with song\, dance\, poetry\, performance\, & discourse. \nFor a peek into the power & creativity of some of our Asian artists\, delight in our gift bag from CommemorASIAN: Shame is Not Ours to Keep (performances are marked in the caption). \nThere is no need to sign up to perform. Anyone can perform as long as they are amplifying Asian voices\, artists\, & experiences. A list of Asian artists will be shared for participants to peruse their work and share whatever resonates with them – of course\, you are welcome to add to our list! \nEach artist will have 5 minutes to share. \nSee you on December 22nd\, at 10am PST/1pm EST! \nZoom info TBA!!!

SUMMARY:Music: ZHU at Terminal 5
DESCRIPTION:EMW Presents: ZHU @ Terminal 5! Zhu will perform a 2 Hour Ball Drop set with support by Maahez\, One True God\, SOHMI. Ring in 2025 with an optional VIP 3-hour open bar 10PM – 1AM. With his sleek synth melodies\, billowing basslines\, and undeniable hooks\, the GRAMMY-nominated artist ZHU creates tracks that are as sexy as they are sinister. Though many know ZHU as a producer and DJ\, he’s much more than that: he’s also a singer\, performer\, instrumentalist\, and\, importantly\, a songwriter and filmmaker\, two facets he delves into for his ambitious new album and film GRACE. ZHU first made his presence known to the world with his 2014 single\, “Faded\,” which was nominated for Best Dance Recording at the 2015 Grammy Awards. He stamped his spot with his genre-blurring 2016 debut\, GENERATIONWHY. He only continued to evolve with subsequent projects like RINGOS DESERT (2018)\, DREAMLAND 2021 (2021)\, Musical Chairs Mixtape (Vol. 1) (2022) and Days Before Grace EP (2023)\, a prologue to Grace.

SUMMARY:MOCA PRESENTS - Threads of Home\, A Participatory Theatre Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Explore “home” during Lunar New Year in Threads of Home\, an immersive theater workshop with personal reflections.\n\n\nDuring the Lunar New Year\, family reunions can be moments we eagerly anticipate—or seek to avoid. The concepts of “family” and “home” mean vastly different things to each of us. How do we then celebrate the Lunar New Year? What might a reunion dinner look like? Director Zhenyu Meng (PhD in Theatre and Film Studies from the Shanghai Theatre Academy) collaborates with SpArkling Theatre Studio to present New Year’s Eve Dinner at the Gene Frankel Theatre from January 17 to 19. \nThe Museum of Chinese in America is delighted to host Director Zhenyu Meng and the production team for a participatory theater workshop\, Threads of Home. This workshop offers a unique opportunity to glimpse the creative process behind the production\, using Chekhov’s acting techniques. Participants will step into the floor plan of a typical northern Chinese household and reflect on their personal experiences. Through guided theatrical activities\, participants will engage in an immersive exploration of “home\,” where every detail — from props to dialogue to imagined memories — carries intentional meaning. This workshop is open to general public and will be conducted in English. \n  \nABOUT Zhenyu Meng \nZhenyu Meng is a performance instructor\, theatre director\, and PhD candidate in Theatre and Film Studies at the Shanghai Theatre Academy. A researcher and practitioner of the Michael Chekhov Technique. She is temporarily based at the CUNY Graduate Center doing acting training method research. Her directorial works include Requiem\, The Blue Bird\, Forever Young\, To Be Or Not To Be\, and Classic of Mountains and Seas\, among others. Frequently featured in the Shanghai International Arts Festival. \nABOUT SpArkling Theatre Studio \nFounded in January 2024 by Annora Dong (董语柔) and Sophia Zhu (朱婕宁)\, SpArkling Theatre Studio was born from the creative synergy and unique resonance between their distinct artistic sensibilities. The two founders first met at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in the Experimental Theatre Wing. Drawing inspiration and creative energy from diverse places such as New York and Shanghai\, SpArkling is dedicated to illuminating people and the world through avant-garde experimental theatre and physical theatre forms. The studio’s core mission is to transcend cultural boundaries through art\, fostering profound human connections and advancing cross-cultural artistic exchange on the international stage. \nABOUT New Year’s Eve Dinner \nOn New Year’s Eve\, an ordinary northern Chinese family gathers to welcome the arrival of the New Year. Yet\, what lingers in the air is not celebration\, but unspoken tension and heavy silence. The story unfolds within the close quarters of a cramped two-bedroom apartment\, where every piece of furniture and every crack in the walls\, bears the weight of lingering emotions and unresolved conflicts that bind and divide the family. The show will be bilingual in both Mandarin Chinese and English with a corresponding introduction and explanation of each scene. The story is depicted through visual pictures. Audiences with all backgrounds and cultures are welcome. \nFor show information\, please visit: http://www.genefrankeltheatre.com/now-playing.html

With the perfect dress: a poofy\, sparkly Cinderella dress that makes Mai look like the movie star she dreams of being! But when Mai’s father suggests that she wears an áo dài\, a traditional Vietnamese outfit\, to her Ba Noi’s party\, Mai is disappointed. Stars don’t wear áo dài\, she thinks. Then Ba tells her the story of a true star\, her very own Ba Noi\, who sewed beautiful\, highly sought-after áo dài in Vietnam and brought her magic with her when she immigrated to the United States. \nSo maybe stars wear áo dài after all! But how can Ba Noi know what Mai’s wearing when Ba Noi is losing her eyesight? Ba tells her every áo dài is sewn with love\, and the beauty of love is that you don’t need to see it to know it’s here. \nWhen Monique Truong (pronounced Trurn) was six years old\, she came to the United States as a refugee from S. Vietnam. She and her family then lived in North Carolina\, Ohio\, and Texas. She is the bestselling author of The Book of Salt\, which was a New York Times Notable Book\, a PEN/Robert W. Her home is now in Brooklyn\, New York\, where she writes novels and libretti\, always cooks enough to have leftovers\, and takes long afternoon naps. She was also once a lawyer with degrees from Columbia Law School and Yale College. Mai’s Áo Dài is her debut picture book. \nThai Nguyen (pronounced Tie-Win)\, born in My Tho\, learned to sew at the age of nine sitting in on classes at his parents’ sewing school in Saigon\, Vietnam. In 1993\, the family immigrated to the United States\, where Thai is now a fashion designer\, based in Orange County\, California. His designs\, for clients such as Jennifer Lopez\, Ariana Grande\, Kelly Marie Tran\, Ali Wong\, Katherine McPhee\, and Cindy Crawford\, have been featured in top publications and have graced the red carpets of the Met Gala\, the Oscars\, the Grammys\, and film and television premieres. Thai’s love of the áo dài\, this iconic symbol of Vietnam\, has been and will continue to be the wellspring for all his creations. Mai’s Áo Dài is his debut picture book.

SUMMARY:Rediscovering Saint Malo: The First Permanent Asian American Settlement
DESCRIPTION:Explore the fascinating history of St. Malo\, Louisiana\, the first permanent Asian settlement in the United States\, established as early as 1763. Contributing to the thriving fishing industry\, Filipino sailors settled the swamps of St. Malo\, but very few sources from the perspective of Filipinos exist. The workshop will demonstrate the ways to utilize poetry as a medium to learn about St. Malo while also analyzing and evaluating outsider accounts of Saint Malo to unearth the truth of the settlement. Educators will leave the workshop with new historical insights and classroom-ready activities to teach about Asian Americans’ enduring role in shaping the United States. Perfect for lessons on immigration\, colonization\, and early American life\, this session sheds light on an important yet often overlooked chapter of our shared past. \nFacilitators: Rachael Richard & Dr. Khyati Joshi \nFree and open to all.\nProfessional Development hours awarded. \nThis event is brought to you by Teach Asian American Stories\, AAPI New Jersey\, and Fairleigh Dickinson University

SUMMARY:Theater: Cymbeline
DESCRIPTION:The National Asian American Theatre Company (NAATCO) will present an all-femme\, all-Asian American production of Cymbeline in New York City in January–February 2025. Cymbeline is one of Shakespeare’s final plays and is about the British king Cymbeline and his daughter\, Imogen. The production features a modern verse translation by Andrea Thome that brings the play’s language into the present. The director\, Brown-Fried chose an all-femme cast to examine gender identity\, performance\, masculine toxicity\, sexual politics\, and power.  \nIn a world shattered by tyranny and poisoned by misogyny\, Cymbeline tells the story of a young woman’s flight from despair to heroism as she rediscovers her lost siblings and brings order to a kingdom ruled by chaos. Performed by an ensemble of eleven women\, Cymbeline is a story of hope and rebirth in the unlikeliest of circumstances. \nCast: Amy Hill as Cymbeline\, Purva Bedi\, Annie Fang\, Anna Ishida\, Narea Kang\, Jennifer Lim\, KK Moggie\, Maria-Christina Oliveras\, Julyana Soelistyo\, Sarah Suzuki\, and Jeena Yi. \nCreative team: Stephen Brown-Fried as director\, Ant Ma as scenic designer\, Mariko Ohigashi as costume designer\, Yiyuan Li as lighting designer\, and Caroline Eng as sound designer.

SUMMARY:Theater: Cuckoo
DESCRIPTION:Cuckoo  By Jaha Koo \nA journey through the last 20 years of Korean history told by a bunch of talkative rice cookers.\nOne day when his electric rice cooker informed him that his meal was ready\, South Korean artist Jaha Koo experienced a deep sense of ‘Golibmuwon’ (고립무원). Twenty years ago a major economic crisis hugely impacted Jaha Koo’s generation of South Korean youth. ‘Golibmuwon’ is the untranslatable Korean word for the feeling of helpless isolation that arose for many. In bittersweet and humorous dialogues with Jaha’s clever rice cookers\, Cuckoo takes you on a journey through the past two decades of Korean history\, combining Jaha’s personal experiences with political events and reflections on happiness\, economic crises\, and mortality. \nIn English & Korean\, with English surtitles. and Run time: 55 minutes \nPost-show Discussion: Jan 17\nJaha Koo\, the visionary creator and performer of Cuckoo\, sits down with celebrated South Korean playwright and Whiting Award recipient Hansol Jung to discuss the creative process\, themes\, and inspirations behind the show. \nPresented in partnership with Under the Radar and Supported by Flanders State of the Art. \nPhoto: Eunkyung Jeong
