SUMMARY:Broadway: Yellow Face
DESCRIPTION:Discount 30% off with code: AANHPI \nTony Award® winner and three-time Pulitzer finalist David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly) will make his Roundabout debut with the Broadway premiere of Yellow Face\, his hilarious is-he-or-isn’t-he comedy of identity\, show business\, and (perhaps) autobiography. Starring Daniel Dae Kim (Lost) and directed by Tony nominee Leigh Silverman (Violet).  \nInspired by real events\, the playwright’s fictionalized doppelgänger protests yellowface casting in Miss Saigon\, only to mistakenly cast a white actor as the Asian lead in his own play. This Obie Award-winning and Pulitzer finalist play is a laugh-out-loud farce about the complexities of race.

SUMMARY:NYC Mid Autumn Fest 2024
DESCRIPTION:A day-long festival of NYC’s diverse Asian-American community\, featuring performance artists\, creators\, musicians/DJs\, chefs\, and artisans.\n\n\nThe Mid-Autumn Fest is the culmination of an 8-week fundraiser for Meals for Unity. If you cannot attend\, please consider donating directly here. \nAlso known as the Harvest Moon Festival\, the Mid-Autumn Fest is an extraordinary opportunity to unite the Asian-American community in celebration of the fruits of our labor throug a day-long celebration—featuring a mix of performers and creators: musicians\, dancers\, DJs\, artisans\, culinary masters\, creators\, martial arts practitioners\, visual artists\, and comedians. In essence\, we were bringing the magic of the Asian Night Market to the heart of Queens.. As we gather under the luminous harvest moon\, we will embark on a mission to cultivate community resiliency and sustainable vitality for Asian American-owned entrepreneurs in the entertainment and food service industries. \nABOUT MEALS FOR UNITY \nAs a group of young professionals who are predominantly first-generation Americans\, we understand the unique challenges and needs of the elderly AAPI community. Our experiences\, along with those passed on to us from generations prior\, have shaped our perspectives and gave us the knowledge and tools to be able to empathize\, support\, and uplift this neglected sector of the community. \nBy leveraging their resources\, networks\, and professional experiences\, they source culturally relevant meals from locally owned AAPI restaurants\, catering to the specific dietary needs and preferences of the elderly AAPI community while stimulating the Chinatown economy. Their goal is to provide not just sustenance\, but also a sense of comfort and nostalgia; paying homage to the heritage of those they serve. \nBy the end of 2023\, we have served over 14\,700 free meals\, have executed 38 meal distribution events\, have been aided by over 570 volunteers\, recorded more than 3\,000 volunteer hours\, and have partnered with over 45 corporate sponsors\, non-profits\, and local restaurants. \n  \nABOUT MOONLITE \nMoonlite exists to uncover\, illuminate\, and elevate the diverse perspectives and expressions that currently exist in our creative community of Asian Americans. We create wholly unique experiences to build our collective sustainability. In plain speak\, we love showcasing the diverse talents of the Asian-American creative community by creating spaces for them to share their art and\, importantly\, to help them get paid for it so that they can keep making more. \nWhile our goal is to build up our creative community and foster sustainable careers\, we believe wholeheartedly that this is best achieved when everyone is having A GOOD TIME. \n  \nBelow is the event flyer\, as well as some snaps of last year’s Mid-Autumn Fest. \n  \nThis project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant program\, a program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor KathyHochul and the New York State Legislature and administered by Flushing Town Hall.

SUMMARY:Telling HerStory: Women of Chinatown
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Julia Flynn Siler\, author of “The White Devil’s Daughters: The Women Who Fought Slavery in San Francisco’s Chinatown”. The book is a revelatory history of the trafficking of young Asian girls that flourished in San Francisco during the first century of Chinese immigration (1848-1943) and the “safe house” on the edge of Chinatown that became a refuge for those seeking their freedom. Originally known as the Occidental Mission House\, it is now known as Cameron House\, home to a thriving social services agency for San Francisco’s Chinatown. \nFrom 1874\, the Mission served as a gateway to freedom for thousands of enslaved and vulnerable Chinese women and girls. Siler tells the story of both the abolitionists\, who challenged the anti-Chinese prejudices of the time\, and the young women who dared to flee their fate. She uncovered the stories of many of the girls and young women who came to the Mission and the lives they later led\, sometimes being part of the home’s staff themselves. \nIn a conversation with Cynthia Lim\, current Vice President of CFHG\, Siler will share her extensive research process and offer advice on how to start writing family stories. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about a fascinating slice of Chinese American History. We will have a Q&A session\, where the audience can send in questions. We will also have a book giveaway but you will have to be registered and present to win.

SUMMARY:NYU Reads: Hua Hsu
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special event featuring Hua Hsu – author of the 2024–2025 NYU Reads selection\, Stay True – in conversation with Provost Georgina Dopico. \nNYU Reads\, sponsored by the Office of the Provost\, brings the NYU community together around a common reading\, chosen by a committee made up of faculty\, student\, and staff representatives. Through both large- and small-scale events\, the discussion around this common reading begins during NYU Welcome and continues throughout the year. \nThis event is free and open to the public. RSVP does not guarantee a ticket. Ticket pickup information will be shared via email\, prior to the event.  \nAbout Hua Hsu\nHua Hsu is the author of two books\, including the bestselling memoir Stay True. His memoir was a Top 10 Book of the Year at The New York Times\, and was named a Best Book of the Year at TIME\, The New Yorker\, The Washington Post\, and more. Hua is a staff writer at the New Yorker and a CBS Sunday Morning contributor. He teaches at Bard College\, and has previously taught at Harvard and Vassar College. \nAbout Stay True\nStay True charts Hsu’s experience as an undergraduate at UC Berkeley in the mid-1990s—his days filled with mix tapes\, “zines\,” and making friends laugh and think. Social media and cell phones barely existed; email was so rarely used that friends checked one another’s inboxes every 2-3 weeks\, as a neighborly gesture. As distant as this may seem from our current world\, much of what Hsu evokes remains relevant\, even pressing\, to students today: from the significance that matters of taste (in music\, movies\, clothes) can suddenly take on\, to a growing sense of one’s identity\, to the important and transformative role that close friends can play in our lives. After one of his closest friends at Berkeley dies in a senseless act of violence during his junior year\, Hsu comes to grips with remembering the past in a way that does justice to both the meaningful and the mundane\, as well as with the grief of losing someone so young\, when growing up still means growing outward. The timeless themes of Stay True will prompt NYU readers to reflect on what it means to engage with each other today—to listen and cultivate curiosity; to build bridges with those who are different from us; and to grow from our experiences and contribute what we learn to the community.

SUMMARY:In Celebration of The Lucky Ones
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a celebration of writer Zara Chowdhary’s memoir The Lucky Ones\, in conversation with Nur Nasreen Ibrahim!\n\n\nJoin AAWW in-person and online for a celebration of Zara Chowdhary’s memoir The Lucky Ones! Zara will be joined by journalist\, television producer\, and writer Nur Nasreen Ibrahim. \nIn 2002\, Zara Chowdhary is sixteen years old and living with her family in Ahmedabad\, one of India’s fastest-growing cities\, when a gruesome train fire claims the lives of sixty Hindu right-wing volunteers and upends the life of five million Muslims. Instead of taking her school exams that week\, Zara is put under a three-month siege\, with her family and thousands of others fearing for their lives as Hindu neighbors\, friends\, and members of civil society transform overnight into bloodthirsty mobs\, hunting and massacring their fellow citizens. The chief minister of the state at the time\, Narendra Modi\, will later be accused of fomenting the massacre\, and yet a decade later\, will rise to become India’s prime minister\, sending the “world’s largest democracy” hurtling toward cacophonous Hindu nationalism. \nThe Lucky Ones traces the past of a multigenerational Muslim family to India’s brave but bloody origins\, a segregated city’s ancient past\, and the lingering hurt causing bloodshed on the streets. Symphonic interludes offer glimpses into the precious\, ordinary lives of Muslims\, all locked together in a crumbling apartment building in the city’s old quarters\, with their ability to forgive and find laughter\, to offer grace even as the world outside\, and their place in it\, falls apart. \nThe Lucky Ones entwines lost histories across a subcontinent\, examines forgotten myths\, prods a family’s secrets\, and gazes unflinchingly back at a country rushing to move past the biggest pogrom in its modern history. It is a warning thrown to the world by a young survivor\, to democracies that fail to protect their vulnerable\, and to homes that won’t listen to their daughters. It is an ode to the rebellion of a young woman who insists she will belong to her land\, family\, and faith on her own terms. \n__ \nZara Chowdhary is a writer and lecturer at the University of Wisconsin. She has an MFA in creative writing and environment from Iowa State University and a Master’s in writing for performance from the University of Leeds. She has previously written for documentary television\, advertising\, and film. She lives in Madison\, Wisconsin with her partner\, child\, and two cats. \nNur Nasreen Ibrahim is a journalist\, television producer\, and writer from Lahore\, Pakistan. Her speculative fiction\, literary fiction\, and personal essays have been published by The Aleph Review\, Salmagundi\, and Barrelhouse and anthologized in collections from Harper Perennial\, Catapult\, Hachette India\, and Platypus Press. She is a senior editor with the South Asian Avant-Garde (SAAG) Anthology and a two-time finalist for The Salam Award for Imaginative Fiction. Nur is a recipient of the 2021-2023 Lighthouse Writers Workshop Book Project Teaching Fellowship and the AAWW Margins Fellowship. \n__ \nCOMMUNITY CARE & ACCESSIBILITY \nAt AAWW\, the safety and comfort of our community is our top priority. We invite you to practice intentionality and care in your behavior and language when engaging with our programs and with each other.
