SUMMARY:2026 Korea on Screen: House of the Seasons (장손)
DESCRIPTION:The Korean Cultural Center New York proudly presents Peafowl as part of its Korea on Screen series—a year-long screening series celebrating the depth and diversity of Korean cinema. Through feature films\, documentaries\, short films\, and independent productions\, the series aims to broaden access to and appreciation of Korean cinema in New York City. \nOh Jung-min’s House of the Seasons begins on a sweltering summer day as three generations of a family gather at their hometown in Daegu for an ancestral memorial rite. Seong-jin’s father has inherited and now runs the family tofu factory\, with other family members helping with the business. What at first appears to be a harmonious family gathering gradually begins to unravel after the memorial rite\, as differing perspectives and long-standing tensions come to the surface. In the midst of the growing conflict\, Seong-jin makes a startling declaration: he has no intention of taking over the family business. Following the lives of this three-generation family with a calm and restrained gaze\, Oh Jung-min reflects on what disappears and what is passed on to the next generation. \nHouse of the Seasons premiered at the 28th Busan International Film Festival\, where it won three awards: the KBS Independent Film Award\, the Aurora Media Award\, and the CGK Award. The film was recognized for its nuanced portrayal of multigenerational family life\, Korean tradition\, and generational conflict. \nTicket: FREE (RSVP REQUIRED)\n * RSVP and seating are first come\, first served.\n* Doors open 30 minutes before showtime.\n* Your tickets will be released to the standby line 10 minutes before the show\, so we recommend you arrive early to secure your seats.

SUMMARY:Book Talk | Mud on the Moon by Nita Noveno
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE BOOK \nMUD ON THE MOON is a hybrid memoir that weaves a daughter’s journey of discovering her Filipino immigrant father’s hidden past with imaginative storytelling\, offering a look into migration\, identity\, and the intergenerational legacies that shape who we are.  \n\n\n\nBorn in Southeast Alaska\, Nita Noveno traces the legacy of her father\, who arrived in the US in 1928 as part of a wave of Filipino men seeking better opportunities through manual labor in agriculture and other industries. The book alternates between Nita’s coming-of-age story and imagined chapters of her father’s life\, revealing the gaps and silences that lie between their experiences. With a blend of personal and historical imagery\, Mud on the Moon offers a rare glimpse into the lives of Filipino immigrants in America. It is a meditation on how family\, memory\, and identity are shaped by the stories we inherit\, both spoken and unspoken\, across generations. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nNita Noveno is the recipient of the 2024 Women’s Prose Prize from Red Hen Press for her hybrid memoir Mud on the Moon\, published in August 2026. Publishers Weekly calls it “a moving blend of autobiography and imagination” and “an auspicious first outing.” A graduate of the MFA Creative Writing Program at The New School\, her creative nonfiction and hybrid work has appeared in MĀNOA\, Hippocampus\, The Margins\, and elsewhere. She teaches creative nonfiction\, composition\, and literature at the Borough of Manhattan Community College\, City University of New York\, and is the founder\, curator\, and host emeritus of Sunday Salon\, a long-running reading series in New York City. The child of immigrant parents from the Philippines\, she grew up in the temperate rainforest of Southeast Alaska and now lives in Queens\, NY. \nIN CONVERSATION WITH \nNina Sharma’s work has appeared in outlets such as The Los Angeles Times\, The New Yorker\, Harper’s Bazaar and Electric Literature. Her debut personal essay collection is The Way You Make Me Feel: Love in Black and Brown(Penguin Press 2024). The Washington Post praises\, “Sharma’s debut is remarkable for its daring\, how unafraid it is to eschew rosy visions of racial solidarity.” Nina received her MFA in writing from Columbia University’s School of the Arts and has been awarded residencies from Vermont Studio Center and  St. Nell’s Humor Writing Residency. Nina is formerly the Programs Director at the Asian American Writers’ Workshop and with Quincy Scott Jones she co-created Blackshop\, a column that thinks about allyship between BIPOC people\, featured on Anomaly. A two-time Asian Women Giving Circle grantee for her workshop\, “No Name Mind: Stories of Mental Health from Asian America\,” she currently teaches at Barnard College and the Manhattanville University MFA in writing program. She is a proud co-founder of the comedy troupe Not Your Biwi Improv.

SUMMARY:Rea Tajiri's "History and Memory: For Akiko and Takashige"
DESCRIPTION:Filmmaker Rea Tajiri blends interviews\, memorabilia\, and a pilgrimage to the camp where her mother was interned\, ruminating on the difficult nature of representing the past – especially a past that exists outside traditional historic accounts. More than simply calling attention to the gaps in the story of the Japanese American internment\, this important film from 1991 raises questions about collective history; questions that prompt Tajiri to daringly re-imagine and re-create what has been stolen and what has been lost. This 30-minute documentary short will be followed by a discussion between the filmmaker and choreographer Benjamin Akio Kimitch. \nComplimentary drinks and popcorn will be served! \nHosted by the Wythe Hotel Art Program. Curated by Benjamin Akio Kimitch. \nDoors open at 6:30 PM.\nScreening begins at 7:00 PM\, followed by Q&A. \nWythe Hotel Screening Room\n80 Wythe Ave\, Brooklyn\, NY\, 11249 \n(Please use the downstairs speakeasy entrance on Wythe Avenue) \nCapacity is limited. If you’re no longer able to attend\, please notify us as soon as possible: jason@showshow.co. \nThis special film screening is part of a series of activations accompanying the world premiere of a new dance work Allegra by Benjamin Akio Kimitch. SUMMARY:JLF New York 2026
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating books\, ideas\, and dialogue\, the Jaipur Literature Festival — described as “the greatest literary show on Earth” — returns to New York in 2026. A caravan of pre-eminent writers\, performers\, essayists\, commentators\, and raconteurs is almost here to take you on a journey to worlds woven by words and ideas. This year’s JLF includes Kai Bird\, Sam Dalrymple\, Mahmood Mamdani\, Susan Goldmark and Nitin Seth.  \nThe iconic Jaipur Literature Festival\, held annually at the Pink City of Jaipur in India’s Rajasthan state\, has always believed in the spirit of community and the hope\, strength\, and vitality that literature gives. Join us for the tenth annual JLF New York\, returning to Asia Society to celebrate the cosmopolitan spirit and boundless energy of New York City and bringing forth JLF’s signature camaraderie\, the mosaic of ideas\, and the enrapturing flow of conversations that continue to make the festival truly incredible! \nSchedule\nSchedule timings\, speakers subject to change. Watch this space for updates.  \n3:40 – 4:20 p.m. \nShattered Lands: Five Partitions and the Making of Modern Asia\nSam Dalrymple in conversation with Prashant Jha \nShattered Lands by Sam Dalrymple traces five partitions that carved twelve nations\, reshaping borders\, identities\, and lives. Drawing on archival research\, memoirs\, and eyewitness accounts across multiple languages\, this compelling narrative illuminates the wars\, migrations\, and legacies that forged modern Asia. In conversation with writer Prashant Jha\, Sam explores the dramatic unmaking of Britain’s colonial Empire\, once spanning from the Red Sea to Southeast Asia. \n4:30 – 5:10 p.m. \nThere Is A Ghost In My Room\nSanjoy K. Roy in Conversation with Sohaila Abdulali \n5:20 – 6:00 p.m. \nAI: The Modern Double Helix\nNitin Seth\, Vinita Gupta and Meredith Broussard in conversation with Roopa Unnikrishnan  \nAs humans and machines enter a new era of co-intelligence\, the challenge is how we can collaborate with it responsibly\, creatively\, and ethically. This evolving partnership raises profound questions about knowledge\, trust\, originality\, and what remains uniquely human. A panel of experts discuss the possibilities of an innovation that has altered technology and work as we know it. \n6:10 – 6:50 p.m. \nSlow Poison: Uganda and the Afterlives of Empire\nMahmood Mamdani in conversation with Neeraj Kaushal \n7:00 – 7:50 p.m. \nAmerican Scoundrel: Roy Cohn’s Dark Journey\nKai Bird and Susan Goldmark in conversation with Sree Srinivasan \nIn American Scoundrel\, Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer Kai Bird\, with Susan Goldmark\, uncovers the extraordinary and unsettling life of Roy Cohn\, the ruthless lawyer\, fixer\, and political operator whose methods and worldview helped shape modern American politics and whose most enduring protégé was Donald Trump. From the fevered anti-communism of the McCarthy era to the boardrooms of New York\, the corridors of Washington\, and the glittering excess of Studio 54\, Cohn emerges as a charismatic\, manipulative\, and sinister presence. Bird and Goldmark’s meticulous research and gripping storytelling trace the making and unmaking of a man whose divisive influence deeply impacted the workings of the US for years to come.

SUMMARY:Chapal Rani\, the Last Queen of Bengal
DESCRIPTION:A book talk with author Sandip Roy \n\n\nJoin NYU’s Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality for a book talk with author Sandip Roy on Chapal Rani\, the Last Queen of Bengal: The Life and Times of a Female Impersonator \nAs the last great female impersonator of Bengali theater\, Chapal Bhaduri—known as Chapal Rani—once held audiences spellbound in the jatra tradition\, where men became goddesses and heroines. But when women finally took their place on stage\, Chapal found himself exiled from the world he had ruled. In this groundbreaking biography\, Sandip Roy captures the rise and fall of a performer whose art was inseparable from his identity. \nTold in Chapal’s own voice and interwoven with evocative fictional vignettes\, Chapal Rani\, the Last Queen of Bengal brings to life Kolkata’s golden age of theater and the resilience of a man who refused to disappear. Through decades of research and deeply personal interviews\, Roy crafts a moving portrait of gender and belonging. \nSandip Roy is a writer\, columnist and podcaster currently living in Kolkata. He is a columnist for Mint Lounge\, the Hindu and the host of the Sandip Roy Show on Indian Express. His weekly audio dispatches from Kolkata have been airing on public radio KALW in San Francisco since 2012. His work has appeared in publications like the New York Times\, BBC\, the San Francisco Chronicle\, NPR\, the Times of India\, Firstpost\, Huffington Post\, Conde Nast Traveller and other publications. He has been part of anthologies like Out! Stories from the New Queer India\, The Phobic and the Erotic\, Q&A: Queer in Asian America\, Men on Men 6\, Because I Have a Voice\, Story-wallah!\, House Spirit: Drinking in India and Cat People. For more than a decade\, Roy was editor of Trikone\, the world’s oldest magazine on LGBTQ+ South Asian issues. His first novel is Don’t Let Him Know. His latest book is Chapal Rani\, the Last Queen of Bengal – The Life and Times of a Female Impersonator. \nCopies of the book will be sold at the event. The talk will be followed by a catered reception and refreshments. \nNYU campus access guidelines: Registration is required. Non-NYU guests may be asked to present a government-issued photo ID. NYU guests must present their NYU ID. \nAccessibility note: This venue has an elevator and is accessible for wheelchair users. There are single-stall\, all gender restrooms available. SUMMARY:Sonya Rhie Mace in conversation with Molly Emma Aitken
DESCRIPTION:The Tenth Edition of JLF New York continues at the National Arts Club with two blockbuster events. \n\nJLF New York @ NAC \nWith hundreds of thousands of spectators worldwide\, and mini-festivals from Houston to Doha\, India’s iconic Jaipur Literature Festival is known as “the greatest literary show on Earth” (Tina Brown). \nIn conjunction with the Asia Society and the Center for Fiction\, NAC will host the tenth edition of JLF New York\, an international edition of the Jaipur Literature Festival —which celebrates conversation\, bold ideas and exceptional storytelling\, in the voices of speakers ranging from novelist Alka Joshi and curator Sonya Rhie Mace to Oppenheimer biographer Kai Bird. \nSession 1 at 11 a.m. \nPahari Paintings: Art and Stories – Sonya Rhie Mace in conversation with Molly Emma Aitken \nBetween the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries\, the Pahari kingdoms of the northwestern Himalayas created a luminous world of painting—intimate\, expressive and richly coloured. In this richly illustrated session\, celebrated curator Sonya Rhie Mace explores a remarkably dispersed collection that offers new ways of seeing these works. Moving beyond questions of attribution\, the conversation with art historian and professor Molly Emma Aitken\, traces artists\, patrons and practices across regions\, revealing a shared visual culture shaped by movement and exchange. \n\nThis event occurs in person. RSVP does not guarantee entry. Our coat check is limited. Please do not bring any large bags or backpacks.

SUMMARY:Su Dongpo: An Enduring Light of Chinese Civilization
DESCRIPTION:Few figures in Chinese history have embodied the richness and complexity of Chinese culture as fully as Su Shi (1037–1101)\, better known as Su Dongpo. Poet\, essayist\, calligrapher\, painter\, statesman\, and philosopher of life\, Su achieved distinction in an extraordinary range of fields. To understand Su Dongpo\, however\, is to explore something larger than the accomplishments of a single literary genius. His life and writings offer a window into some of the deepest currents of Chinese thought and culture. \nThe Renwen Society at China Institute is pleased to present an online lecture\, “Su Dongpo: An Enduring Light of Chinese Civilization\,” by renowned scholar and lecturer of Chinese classical literature Ben Wang\, on Saturday\, September 26\, 2026. Focusing on three representative works from Su Dongpo’s later years\, Crossing the Sea (《渡海》)\, Watching the Tidal Bore (《观潮》)\, and Xing Xiang Zi (《行香子》)\, the lecture will explore Su’s thought\, emotions\, and philosophy of life through a close reading of his poetry. \nAt the heart of Su Dongpo’s life and thought was an extraordinary sense of balance\, a quality deeply rooted in the Chinese philosophical idea of the “middle.” Confucian ideals shaped his commitment to moral principle\, public service\, and good government\, while Daoist thought helped him cultivate detachment and transcendence in the face of suffering. In his writings\, seriousness and humor\, heroic spirit and tenderness\, sorrow and joy\, engagement with the world and freedom from it could exist side by side. \nThis balance did not mean compromise when fundamental principles were at stake. Su’s refusal to yield to what he regarded as injustice contributed to a political career marked by imprisonment\, repeated demotions\, and exile to increasingly remote parts of the empire. Yet adversity did not diminish his attachment to life. As Ben Wang has observed\, it was precisely Su’s resilience\, perseverance\, and philosophical outlook that enriched his literary achievement. Even during his darkest years\, his writings reveal an abiding love for life and an extraordinary capacity to discover beauty\, humor\, and meaning in the world around him. \nSu Dongpo’s literary achievement was equally remarkable. More than 2\,000 of his shi poems have survived\, while his approximately 350 ci poems helped transform the status and expressive possibilities of the genre. His writing could possess the celebrated quality of haofang (豪放)\, or “heroic abandon\,” yet it could also convey intimacy\, compassion\, humor\, and joie de vivre. Through this unusual breadth of temperament and expression\, Su created a body of work in which seemingly contradictory dimensions of human experience are brought into harmony. \nChina Institute once devoted four semesters and some eighty hours of instruction to Su Dongpo\, and even that could offer only a glimpse of the full range of his poetry\, prose\, calligraphy\, and painting. For this Renwen Society lecture\, after careful consideration\, Ben Wang has chosen three works that he believes capture essential dimensions of Su’s thought and sensibility: Crossing the Sea\, Watching the Tidal Bore\, and Xing Xiang Zi. \nThrough a close reading of these three works\, Ben Wang will examine how Confucian and Daoist traditions came together in Su Dongpo’s understanding of life\, literature\, and public responsibility; how he maintained his moral convictions amid political persecution and personal hardship; and how he ultimately found a distinctive equilibrium among life and death\, sorrow and joy\, suffering and transcendence. The lecture will also consider why Su Dongpo\, nearly a thousand years after his death\, continues to speak so powerfully to generations of readers and remains an enduring light of Chinese civilization.

Renowned for her innovative spirit\, she reimagines age-old songs and performance styles to connect with modern audiences. Continuously exploring new creative directions\, Park has become a leading force in shaping the future of Korean traditional performing arts. \nFor more information\, visit https://jctcenter.org/ \n◆ Insun Park \nInsun Park is a Seoul based mask dancer redefining Korean traditional performance through solo works that bridge ritual\, social critique\, and contemporary expression. A practitioner of Gangnyeong Talchum\, a form of Korea’s National Intangible Heritage\, she began training in elementary school and later studied traditional performance at university. Though rooted in a centuries old form\, her artistic voice has developed in dialogue with modern urban life. \nTraditionally\, mask dance (talchum) combined rhythm\, song\, movement\, and dialogue into a comprehensive art form known as yeonhui. While its satire of aristocrats offered audiences catharsis\, female and disabled characters were often reduced to stereotypes. Park’s work critically engages this legacy\, asking how tradition can be preserved while also responding to contemporary values of gender equity and social inclusion. \nHer major solo project\, The Purpose of Mask Dance (2021)\, explores how mask dance can remain socially meaningful today. In this work\, female characters lead the narrative as witty\, confident\, and self determined figures rather than caricatures. Performing as a one woman ensemble\, dancing\, singing\, playing janggu (Korean drum)\, and shifting roles through masks\, Park transforms a historically male and group based genre into a space for personal and social reflection. In 2023\, she expanded this vision through her band Insun Park & Generals\, an innovative quintet fusing rock music\, Korean traditional sounds\, and mask dance rhythms.
