SUMMARY:MOCA x Committee of 100 x NY Phil Musicians Present: Home and Belonging
DESCRIPTION:This performance highlights music by composers and performers from across the AAPI diaspora.\n\n\nJoin the Musicians of the New York Philharmonic for a special afternoon of music in celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. This concert is part of their ongoing commitment to fostering community\, inclusivity\, and representation in the performing arts while amplifying the missions of partner organizations. This event highlights the work of Committee of 100\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the participation and representation of Chinese Americans in all areas of American life. \nCentered around the themes of home and belonging\, this concert brings powerful storytelling through music to communities beyond Lincoln Center — and invites audiences to connect through shared experiences and new perspectives. \nNearly one-third of the Philharmonic’s musicians are of Asian descent. This performance honors their cultural heritage and artistic voices\, highlighting music by composers and performers from across the AAPI diaspora. The works featured in the program were chosen for the personal significance they hold for the performers. The afternoon will also include a brief presentation from Committee of 100\, who will share more about their mission and impact. \nWe hope you’ll join us for this meaningful celebration — a tribute to identity\, heritage\, and the power of music to bring us home. \nMUSICIANSHannah Choi\, violinAlina Kobialka\, violinAnna Rabinova\, violinLeah Ferguson\, violaCong Wu\, violaClaire Kim\, celloQiang Tu\, celloSumire Kudo\, cello \nPROGRAMSEight Chinese Folk Songs (1998)\, Zhou Long (b. 1953)I. SUMMARY:Kevin Nguyen: Mỹ Documents
DESCRIPTION:In his second novel\, Mỹ Documents\, Kevin Nguyen follows four Vietnamese cousins whose lives are upended after a terrorist attack incites a government crackdown that targets their community through mass internment of Vietnamese-American citizens. Nguyen relies on the history of Japanese internment\, the Vietnam War\, and more recent immigrant detention to imagine a not-entirely-implausible near American future. As the cousins confront isolation\, ambition\, and the fight to survive\, their intertwined journeys offer a powerful meditation on racism\, family\, and resilience. \nIn Person and Livestream

SUMMARY:Publishing as Trans* and Asian / Diasporic Practice
DESCRIPTION:A Conversation and Call for Pitches with Jeannine Tang and Wong Binghao (Bing)\n\n\nOn May 22\, Jeannine Tang and Wong Binghao (Bing) will have a hybrid conversation at Asia Art Archive in America to share and reflect upon their ongoing project focusing on trans* and Asian/diasporic publishing practices in contemporary art. This program will reflect upon their experiences organizing conversations for the project and speculate on publishing futures related to the project. They invite audiences to contribute to these discussions. Tang and Wong will speak during the first half of the program\, and open the floor to the audience for the second half. \nAnyone attending in-person is welcome to take the mic and share their work. Please prepare a 1-2 minute introduction to a publishing project\, with a hot take on how/why it materializes and matters to you and your (imagined) community. Speakers are welcome to bring a publication to illustrate their points. Like the participants of the larger project\, speakers are invited to imagine ‘publishing’ expansively. This could include (not exhaustively): one off or serial projects\, print or digital or online publication\, self-published or institutional endeavors\, books\, zines\, magazines\, journals\, work on/through social media\, websites\, and more. \nBetween 2023-2024\, Tang and Wong convened internal online conversations with artists\, writers\, editors and curators to discuss and complicate how trans*gender\, Asian\, and diasporic experiences might inform publishing practices in contemporary art. These conversations were organized in collaboration with Asia Art Archive in America\, with the support of The New School and New York University. This summer\, Asia Art Archive in America will publish an online publication edited by Tang and Wong that extends these dialogues and features contributions by some of the conversation participants. \nThis collaborative event is hosted by Asia Art Archive in America and co-organized with NYU’s Department of Performance Studies. \n \nParticipant bios: \nJeannine Tang is an art historian who teaches as Assistant Professor in the Department of Performance Studies at the Tisch School of the Arts\, NYU. \nWong Binghao (Bing) is a writer\, editor\, and curator. They are the editorial and creative director of 5G Bing\, an internet grimoire. \n \nLight refreshments will be provided. \nAAAinA’s general programming and operations are funded in part by the New York State Council on the Arts\, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in Partnership with the City Council\, the Vilcek Foundation\, and other foundations and individuals.

The compelling narrative delves into the heart-wrenching story of twin sisters torn apart by China’s one-child policy\, the complex socio-political landscape of China\, and the emotional and ethical dimensions of international adoption. Her previous books include Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea and Eat the Buddha: Life and Death in a Tibetan Town. \nDemick will be in conversation with NPR’s international correspondent Emily Feng\, who brings her own experience and perspective from her reporting work on China. SUMMARY:Operation Babylift at 50: War\, Displacement\, and Vietnamese Diasporic Identities
DESCRIPTION:This workshop explores the powerful and complex legacy of Operation Babylift—one of the largest humanitarian evacuations in history—as a lens to examine war\, displacement\, and identity. As the Vietnam War came to a dramatic close in 1975\, thousands of Vietnamese children were airlifted to the United States and other countries\, raising profound questions about rescue\, loss\, and belonging. \nFifty years later\, the impact of Operation Babylift continues to shape Vietnamese diasporic identities\, adoption narratives\, and intergenerational perspectives on war and migration. Educators will delve into the historical\, humanitarian\, and ethical dimensions of this event\, situating it within the broader context of the Vietnam War and its aftermath. This timely discussion will equip participants with tools to engage students in critical conversations about history\, memory\, and the complexities of forced migration. \nFacilitator: Keri Giannotti\, TAAS Fellow \nFree and open to all. Professional Development hours awarded. \nThis event is brought to you by Teach Asian American Stories and AAPI New Jersey. Made possible by support from The Asian American Foundation.
