SUMMARY:In Celebration of The Magnificent Ruins
DESCRIPTION:Join AAWW in-person and online for a celebration of Nayantara Roy’s The Magnificent Ruins!\n\n\nJoin AAWW in-person and online for a celebration of Nayantara Roy’s The Magnificent Ruins\, a “rare feast” of a novel in which a young Indian American book editor inherits her estranged family’s ancestral home–and their long-buried secrets (Rachel Lyon\, author of Self-Portrait With Boy)! Nayantara will be in conversation with writer Nina Sharma\, and the evening will feature performances by Aditi Misra\, Shayon Maitra\, and Priya Roy. \n__ \nIt is the summer of 2015\, and Lila De is on the verge of a breakthrough in her career at a prestigious New York publishing house. But when she gets a call from her mother in India\, informing her that she’s inherited her family’s sprawling estate\, she must confront the legacy of an extended family that she thought she left behind sixteen years ago. \nReturning to Kolkata reunites Lila with her mother after a decade of estrangement\, and then there are her grandmother\, aunts\, uncles\, and cousins\, all of whom still live in the house\, all of whom resent her sudden inheritance. To make matters more complicated\, her first boyfriend seeks her out when she arrives\, and her star author—and occasional lover—is suddenly determined to make things serious. \nAs Lila tries to come to terms with both past and present\, long-suppressed secrets from her family emerge\, culminating in an act of shocking violence\, and she must finally reckon with her inherited custom of keeping everything under the surface. \nWise\, witty\, and deeply moving\, The Magnificent Ruins is an utterly addictive read and a stunning debut. \n__ \nNayantara Roy is the author of THE MAGNIFICENT RUINS which was a New York Times Editor’s Choice novel\, an LA Times Editor’s Pick\, a Washington Post Best Book\, a People Magazine Best Book\, an Apple Books best debut\, a Hachette book club pick\, a Lilly’s Library book club pick and a Gold House book club pick amongst others. Her second novel\, SISTERS OF THE HALVED HEART is forthcoming from Algonquin in the spring of 2026. In 2018\, Roy won the Rick De Marines award for her short story 8C. Her plays have been performed internationally\, in the UK and India. Roy lives in Silver Lake\, Los Angeles\, where she works as a television executive by day. \nNina Sharma is the author of THE WAY YOU MAKE ME FEEL: INTERRACIAL LOVE IN BLACK AND BROWN. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker\, Electric Literature\, Women’s Studies Quarterly\, Longreads\, and The Margins\, among other publications. She received her MFA in writing from Columbia University’s School of the Arts and has been awarded residencies from Vermont Studio Center and St. Nell’s Humor Writing Residency. Nina is formerly the Programs Director at the Asian American Writers’ Workshop and with Quincy Scott Jones she co-created Blackshop\, a column that thinks about allyship between BIPOC people\, featured on Anomaly. A two-time Asian Women Giving Circle grantee for her workshop\, “No Name Mind: Stories of Mental Health from Asian America\,” she currently teaches at Barnard College and Columbia University. Nina is a proud co-founder of Not Your Biwi Improv. \n__ \nCOMMUNITY CARE & ACCESSIBILITY \nAt AAWW\, the safety and comfort of our community is our top priority. We invite you to practice intentionality and care in your behavior and language when engaging with our programs and with each other. Violence of any kind\, including but not limited to racism\, sexism\, homophobia\, transphobia\, ableism\, ageism\, class or casteism\, bigotry or bias toward religion or faith\, or any action or assault against marginalized identities\, is not tolerated. Those who bring harm to our community in person or online are not welcome\, and will be asked to exit the space. \nThe event will be live streamed on Zoom with auto captioning for those who cannot join us in person. For those joining us in person\, we are located on the 6th floor of 112 W 27th Street (between 6th and 7th Avenues)\, there is an elevator that will take you directly to our office. SUMMARY:MOCA x NYAFF Film Club: Better Luck Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Quarterly screenings & conversations on Asian and Asian American cinema in collaboration with New York Asian Film Festival\n\n\n\n*The film is Rated R. \nMOCA is thrilled to partner with the New York Asian Film Festival to present the MOCA x NYAFF Film Club\, a quarterly program celebrating the brilliance and boldness of Asian and Asian American cinema. This series highlights films of historic and cultural significance under the theme Subversion\, spotlighting daring films that challenge the norm\, rewrite narratives\, and push boundaries. \nEach session is more than just a movie night—it’s an opportunity to connect\, discover\, and engage. Following the screening\, join us for a moderated conversation to explore the film’s themes\, creative impact\, and cultural context. Attendees are encouraged to share their thoughts and continue the dialogue during a casual networking reception afterward. \nDon’t miss this chance to immerse yourself in the world of bold cinema and meaningful connections. Let’s watch\, chat\, and celebrate together! \n \nFEBRUARY SCREENING\nBetter Luck Tomorrow (2002) \nDirected by: Justin LinRuntime: 101 minutes | Rated: R \nA searing portrait of ambition and moral disintegration\, Better Luck Tomorrow follows a group of high-achieving Asian American teenagers as they navigate the pressures of suburban privilege in Orange County\, California. When their drive for academic success spirals into a dangerous foray into crime\, the film paints a riveting picture of teen hubris and the seductive power of subversion. \nDirector Justin Lin maxed out ten credit cards to finance this bold independent feature\, later receiving backing from none other than MC Hammer. Loosely inspired by a 1992 murder case\, this gritty drama leaves audiences pondering questions of identity\, morality\, and privilege. \nStarring: Parry Shen\, Jason Tobin\, Sung Kang\, Roger Fan\, Karin Anna Cheung \n \nPOST-FILM CONVERSATION\nStay after the screening for a conversation between MOCA’s Curator Herb Tam and NYAFF’s Executive Director Sam Jamier\, starting at 8:20 PM. Explore the film’s deeper meanings and behind-the-scenes context before engaging in further discussions with fellow attendees over beverages. \n \nABOUT New York Asian Film Festival \nThe New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) is North America’s premier event showcasing the very best in new Asian cinema. Held annually in July at Film at Lincoln Center and various venues across New York City\, NYAFF is celebrated for its bold\, diverse\, and dynamic programming. \nThe festival highlights a wide spectrum of films—from emerging voices to masterful auteurs—spanning genres such as cutting-edge blockbusters\, independent treasures\, and groundbreaking works. \nAs a vital platform for Asian filmmakers\, NYAFF fosters cross-cultural dialogue and champions the innovation\, creativity\, and richness of Asian storytelling on a global stage.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Amitava Kumar Discusses My Beloved Life with Katie Kitamura
DESCRIPTION:An absorbing\, exceptionally moving novel that traces the arc of a man’s life\, an ordinary life made exceptional by the fact that he has loved and has been loved in turn. \nJadunath Kunwar’s beginnings are humble\, even inauspicious. In 1935 in a village near George Orwell’s birthplace\, Jadu’s mother\, while pregnant with him\, nearly dies from a cobra bite. When we see Jadu again\, he is in college\, meeting the Sherpa who first summited Everest and wondering what it means to be modern. As his life skates between the mythical and the mundane\, and as changes big and small sweep across India\, Jadu finds meaning in the most unexpected places. He befriends poets and politicians. He becomes a historian. And he has a daughter\, Jugnu\, a television journalist with a career in the United States—whose own story recasts the past in a new light. Piercing\, fleet-footed\, and undeniably resonant\, here is a novel from a singularly gifted writer about how we tell stories and write history\, how individuals play a counterpoint to big movements\, how no single life is without consequence. \nAmitava Kumar was born in Ara\, India\, and grew up in the nearby town of Patna. He is the author of the novel Immigrant\, Montana\, as well as several other books of nonfiction and fiction. He lives in Poughkeepsie\, New York\, and teaches at Vassar College. Photo credit Imrul Islam \nKatie Kitamura’s most recent novel is Intimacies. One of The New York Times’ 10 Best Books of 2021 and one of Barack Obama’s Favorite Books of 2021\, it was longlisted for the National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award. The recipient of a Rome Prize in Literature and the Prix Litteraire Lucien Barriere\, her work has been translated into 21 languages and is being adapted for film and television. Her new novel\, Audition\, will be published in 2025.

SUMMARY:Our Laundry\, Our Town with Alvin Eng
DESCRIPTION:A talkback\, signing\, and live podcast recording.\n\n\nIn celebration of the recent Broadway revival of Our Town and the Lunar New Year\, The Drama Book Shop presents\, in association with Jay Michaels Global Communications\, “Our Laundry\, Our Town ” – A talkback\, signing\, and live podcast recording. Author/playwright Alvin Eng will be joined in conversation by Shoshana Greenberg from The Thornton Wilder Society. \n \nAbout the Book \nOur Laundry\, Our Town is a memoir that decodes and processes the fractured urban oracle bones of Alvin Eng’s upbringing in Flushing\, Queens\, in the 1970s. Back then\, his family was one of the few immigrant Chinese families in a far-flung neighborhood in New York City. His parents had an arranged marriage and ran a Chinese hand laundry. From behind the counter of his parents’ laundry and within the confines of a household that was rooted in a different century and culture\, he sought to reconcile this insular home life with the turbulent yet inspiring street life that was all around them––from the faux martial arts of TV’s Kung Fu to the burgeoning underworld of the punk rock scene. \n \nIn the 1970s\, NYC\, like most of the world\, was in the throes of regenerating itself in the wake of major social and cultural changes resulting from the counterculture and civil rights movements. And by the 1980s\, Flushing had become NYC’s second Chinatown. But Eng remained one of the neighborhood’s few Chinese citizens who did not speak fluent Chinese. Finding his way in the downtown theater and performance world of Manhattan\, he discovered the under-chronicled Chinese influence on Thornton Wilder’s foundational Americana drama\, Our Town. This discovery became the unlikely catalyst for a psyche-healing pilgrimage to Hong Kong and Guangzhou\, China—his ancestral home in southern China—that led to writing and performing his successful autobiographical monologue\, The Last Emperor of Flushing. Learning to tell his own story on stages around the world was what proudly made him whole. \n \nAbout the Author \nALVIN ENG a native NYC author/playwright\, educator and acoustic punk raconteur and was recently named a New York Public Library 2024-25 Long-Term Fellow. During his NYPL Long-Term Fellowship he will research The Opium Wars/opium’s impact on the Chinese diaspora and NYC’s 1970s punk/counterculture for his second memoir/nonfiction book\, Urban Oracle Bones. This research will be undertaken through the dual prisms of author William S. Burroughs’ character\, “Johnny Yen”––immortalized in Iggy Pop’s song\, “Lust For Life”––and Eng’s grandfather’s opium overdose in NYC’s Chinatown. The book will be an expansion of his monologue/song stage work\, HERE COMES JOHNNY YEN AGAIN and companion piece to his memoir\, OUR LAUNDRY\, OUR TOWN. Other books: THREE TREES (Alberto Giacometti historical drama published by No Passport Press); Tokens? The NYC Asian American Experience on Stage (oral history/performance text anthology). Plays and performances seen Off-Broadway\, Paris\, Hong Kong and Guangzhou\, China. Honors include Fulbright Specialist Residency\, City University of Hong Kong; Visiting Professor MFA Creative Writing Program\, Queens College/CUNY; NYSCA/NYFA Fellowships. www.alvineng.com / @alvin.eng8 \n \nAbout the Moderator \nSHOSHANA GREENBERG is a lyricist\, librettist\, and theater journalist. SUMMARY:Wigs and Spaces of Intimacy: Korean Migration and the American Street
DESCRIPTION:An Afro Asia Series Program with Min Kyung Lee.  \nPresented by the Institute of Fine Art. Co-sponsored by the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU. \nREGISTER \nFollowing the Korean War\, the military government of South Korea supported industries to improve the dire post-war economic situation. Central to this strategy was to identify export goods that optimized local resources and knowledge\, and that targeted international markets. Among those exports were wigs\, and by the 1960s\, Seoul became the global center for wig manufacturing\, relying on its own female population for hair supplies and cheap labor. These wigs were exported to the US and specifically targeted the growing consumer market of African American women. Moreover\, wig stores were run by new Korean immigrants in urban neighborhoods that were in the process of becoming increasingly Black with white flight to the suburbs and red-lining practices. Parallel to the shifting racial and ethnic geographies in American cities\, South Korea also faced socio-political change in which the women toiling in wig factories started to protest their working conditions. Their political actions would eventually mark the beginning of the Korean democracy movement. This lecture by Professor Min Kyung Lee connects the migration stories of Koreans to those of African Americans\, focusing on their shared spatial practices in wig stores during the Cold War period in the US. \nMin Kyung Lee is associate professor and Chair of the Department of the Growth and Structure of Cities at Bryn Mawr College. Her recent monograph\, The Tyranny of the Straight Line: Mapping Modern Paris (Yale University Press\, 2024) studied the relations between mapping and architecture in nineteenth-century Paris. Her research in this area brings together histories of orthography and quantification with theories of modern architectural and urban representations. Currently\, her work\, Mapping Wigs and Plywood centers on histories of post-war Korean migration as well as developing archival methods with and by diasporic communities. She is a co-founder of the Architecture and Migration group of the European Architectural History Network\, supported by the New Directions Mellon Foundation Fellowship\, and affiliated with research groups at the Courtauld in London and the Kunsthistorische Institut in Florence. \n*This event will not be livestreamed or recorded. \n  \nAccessibility note: The Institute of Fine Arts provides reasonable accommodations to people with disabilities. Requests for accommodations for events should be made at least twoweeks before the date event. Please email ifa.events@nyu.edu for assistance. \n  \nImage: A photograph of of wigs at CJ Fashions. Register for virtual participation \nThe Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) invites you to an insightful conversation with Shang Saavedra\, founder of Save My Cents and author of Wealth Is a Mindset: Change Your Mind\, Change Your Money. Join us for an evening that explores how mental health and financial freedom are deeply interconnected and learn actionable strategies for transforming your relationship with money. \nSaavedra believes personal finance is more than just dollars and cents—it’s about understanding the psychological and emotional roots of our financial habits. In this talk\, Saavedra will share practical financial advice with an empathetic exploration of how past experiences\, family history\, and societal pressures shape our money behaviors. Drawing on her pioneering “Trigger\, Action\, Reward” methodology\, Saavedra will offer tools such as step-by-step strategies for paying off debt\, saving for retirement\, building generational wealth\, and achieving a life of financial security—on your own terms. \nModerating the talk is Robert Chen\, MOCA Board Trustee and Managing Director at Morgan Stanley. With over a decade of experience helping individuals and families shape and implement their asset strategies\, Chen brings a wealth of expertise and insight to this conversation. \nAbout Shang Saavedra \nShang Saavedra is the Founder and CEO of Save My Cents\, an influential personal-finance website and social-media platform. Saavedra teaches readers the key habits and behaviors needed to become less fearful of money and live life with joy. Saavedra was named one of the “Twenty-five Most Influential New Voices of Money” by TIME/NextAdvisor in 2022 and is an Expert Reviewer and Contributor at CNet Money. She received her bachelor’s degree in economics from Harvard and her MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Saavedra and her husband finished saving for their retirement by the age of thirty-one and now live a work-optional life in Southern California with their two boys and two cats. \nAbout Robert Chen \nAs a Managing Director at Morgan Stanley\, Robert has over a decade of experience in helping high net worth individuals and family clientele shape and implement their overall asset allocation strategies and over 18 years in the financial services industry. \nRobert is a graduate of Brown University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Economics. Through her online classes and coaching lessons in investing\, saving for retirement\, debt freedom\, and more\, she has helped thousands of clients implement the TAR strategy and achieve transformative change in their lives. \nWealth Is a Mindset provides practical\, concrete applications of Saavedra’s mindset-changing methodology. It is also an empathetic memoir that shows how Saavedra and her husband overcame many of their own emotional challenges to attain financial freedom. Dozens of anecdotes from her clients illustrate how the strategy works in real life. More importantly\, it shows that we all are human\, our inherent worth going far beyond simply a salary and net worth number. Featuring prescriptive\, judgment-free exercises and worksheets to show step by step how to pay down debt\, raise income\, start a side hustle\, save more money\, invest for retirement\, and build generational wealth\, Wealth Is a Mindset will help readers find ways to improve their money and their lives\, no matter where they are in their personal money story.

SUMMARY:The First Lunar New Year Celebration in the U.S.
DESCRIPTION:Join us on  in honor of the Year of the Snake (2025) and learn about the historical significance of the first Chinatown in the United States. \nDuring the 1850s\, thousands of Chinese immigrants arrived in the United States in search of economic opportunities during the Gold Rush. Most of them settled in California\, especially northern California. They faced extreme levels of prejudice\, discrimination\, and hate. As a means of survival\, early Chinese immigrants formed close-knit communities. The first Chinatown was established in San Francisco\, California. It was the site of the first Lunar New Year celebration. In honor of the Year of the Snake (2025)\, The Asian American Education Project is hosting a webinar about the historical significance of the first Chinatown in the United States. Participants will gain access to lesson plans and books about the Lunar New Year.
