SUMMARY:I'm Laughing Because I'm Crying by Youngmi Mayer w/ John deBary
DESCRIPTION:Join Youngmi Mayer and John deBary for a conversation celebrating the launch of I’m Laughing Because I’m Crying!\n\n\nPlease note that attendees who purchase their book ahead of time (in the ticketing options) will receive priority in the signing line after the book talk\, and will have their books signed first!\nUpon arrival\, you will check in with a staff member and receive your number in the signing line.\n\nBooks will also be available for sale at the event itself\, until sold out. \n \nCan’t make it? Pre-order your signed copy here. \n \nPlease also consider making a donation with your RSVP! Donations go to Seward Park Campus Library (@SparkCampusLibrary)\, a proud NYC Public School high school library. Our library serves the five high schools in the building\, and in partnership with New Design High School\, we have been able to build a podcast/music recording studio to help students build 21st century skills. To that end\, we are in the process of building MarkerSpark – a creative Makerspace focused on 3D engineering and design. Your donations are crucial to making this happen. Help us build out the vision of next year’s leaders. \n \nABOUT THE BOOK \nFrom standup comedian Youngmi Mayer\, an unforgettable memoir written with “raw\, enviable freedom that simply floors you\,” interrogating whiteness\, gender\, and sexuality in America\, navigating a tumultuous childhood in Korea and Saipan\, and coming to terms with her parents’ shortcomings (Michelle Zauner). \n“Do you know what happens if you laugh while crying? Hair grows out of your butthole.” It was a constant truism Youngmi Mayer’s mother would say threateningly after she would make her daughter laugh while crying. Her mother used it to cheer her up in moments when she could tell Youngmi was overtaken with grief. The humorous saying would never fail to lighten the mood\, causing both daughter and mother to laugh and cry at the same time. Her mother had learned this trick from her mother\, and her mother had learned this from her mother before her: it had also helped an endless string of her family laugh through suffering. \n \nIn I’m Laughing Because I’m Crying\, Youngmi jokes through the retelling of her childhood as an offbeat biracial kid in Saipan\, a place next to a place that Americans might know. She jokes through her difficult adolescence where she must parent her own parents: a mother who married her husband because he looked like white Jesus (and the singer of The Bee Gees). And with humor and irreverence and full-throated openness\, she jokes even while sharing the story of what her family went through during the last century of colonialism and war in Korea\, while reflecting how years later\, their wounds affect her in New York City as a single mom\, all the while interrogating whiteness\, gender\, and sexuality. \n \nYoungmi jokes through these stories in hopes of passing onto the reader what her family passed down to her: The gift of laughing while crying. The gift of a hairy butthole. Because throughout it all\, the one thing she learned was one cannot exist without the other. And like a yin and yang\, this duality is reflected in this whip-smart\, heart-wrenching\, and disarmingly funny memoir told by a bright new voice with so much heart and wisdom.

SUMMARY:Ken Liu – Laozi’s Dao De Jing
DESCRIPTION:MOCA invites you to a thought-provoking conversation with award-winning author Ken Liu as he illustrates his new translation of Laozi’s Dao De Jing. Written around 400 BC\, this foundational Chinese philosophical text resonates with themes of humility\, resilience\, and the search for harmony. Liu’s fresh interpretation offers more than just a translation; it provides a deeply personal journey through Laozi’s wisdom\, addressing contemporary challenges with profound insight. \nLiu\, renowned for his speculative fiction and translations of contemporary Chinese science fiction (including the bestselling The Three-Body Problem)\, takes readers beyond traditional\, authoritative annotations\, offering instead an unapologetically subjective approach through a series of interstitial entries. His work encourages readers to embrace the constant change and flow of life\, ultimately finding solace in the Dao. Moderated by Yifan Wu\, MOCA’s Director of Programs\, this event promises a captivating exploration of the timeless relevance of Laozi’s teachings and the art of translation.

SUMMARY:Localized History Workshop Series – The Missing Stories: South Asian American History from the 18th Century to Today
DESCRIPTION:South Asian Americans have been a presence in the United States for more than 250 years. Early immigrants from South Asia worked on farms and factories\, helped build railroads\, fought for India’s freedom from British rule\, and struggled for equal rights in the United States. Today\, more than 6.1 million individuals in the U.S. trace their heritage to South Asia\, the fastest growing immigrant group in the country. South Asian American stories are an integral part of the American story\, yet little information is available to the public about these stories. \nIn “The Missing Stories\,” SAADA’s Executive Director Samip Mallick will cover how communities come to be excluded from the archival record and how we can address these absences. Samip will introduce South Asian American history (1800s to present) and will also discuss how community-based archives can become sites for liberatory memory work by introducing the audience to SAADA’s archival collections\, programs\, and participatory storytelling projects.

They’ll also examine the role of personal and cultural narratives in shaping the forms their writings take. \n1:15 pm – 2:15 pm: Lunch Break \n2:30 pm – 3:30 pm: Undoing Genre: Emerging Voices From Across the Literary Spectrum \nAuthors Maddie Mori\, Nina Sharma\, noam keim\, and Karen Mok will discuss the distinct and often winding paths they each took toward publishing their work across poetry\, memoir\, and fiction. From navigating the complexities of finding the right literary agents to negotiating their first contracts\, the authors will share the highs and lows of their journeys. BROWNE FOR THE NATIONAL POETRY SERIES \nAn irreverent poetry collection that wrestles with questions of family\, mortality\, cultural history\, and identity from the Filipinx-American experience. \nBorn in the United States to Filipino immigrants\, poet Albert Abonado is no stranger to the language of periphery. Neither wholly “American” nor Filipino\, Field Guide for Accidents’s speakers are defined by what they are not: not white enough to be born in America\, not Asian enough to feel at home in the Philippines. Abonado’s poetry illuminates the strange and surreal in domestic routine\, suturing wounds of love\, grief\, and the contradiction of being Filipinx-American\, two identities bound with a hyphen that resists negation. What results is a growing exposure to a world mired in paradox. \nThe poems in Field Guide for Accidents experiment with the constraints of the poetic line\, shaping forms that exhume what tend to haunt us in the silence. In Field Guide for Accidents\, memory becomes augmented with the imaginary; suspicion collides with superstition\, while spirituality crosses paths with scientific fact. A mother returns to her son as a boat. A stew is prepared with blood yet masked as chocolate. The living eat with the dead in memories built like houses. Mythic\, bloodthirsty creatures in Pinoy folklore prey on an exhausted poet. Research conducted in hindsight provides new avenues to explore regret. \nFor many third-culture kids of the Asian-American diaspora\, there is no such thing as a success story for “fitting in.” What matters more is finding where you belong. Spooning images from hand to mouth\, the poems in Field Guide for Accidents struggle with what it means to consume and be consumed by American culture. \n \nAlbert Abonado is the author of Jaw (Sundress Publications). He holds an MFA from the Bennington Writing Seminars and has received fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. His writing has appeared in the Boston Review\, Colorado Review\, Poetry Northwest\, The Margins\, Hobart\, Waxwing\, Triquarterly\, and others. Albert currently teaches creative writing at SUNY Geneseo and the Rochester Institute for Technology. He is the former Director of Adult Programs at Writers & Books. \n \nJason Koo is a second-generation Korean American poet\, educator\, editor and nonprofit director. He is the author of four full-length collections of poetry: No Rest\, a winner of the Diode Editions Book Contest\, More Than Mere Light\, America’s Favorite Poem and Man on Extremely Small Island. His work has been published in Best American Poetry 2022\, Missouri Review\, Poetry Northwest\, Village Voice and Yale Review\, among other places\, and won fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts\, Vermont Studio Center and New York State Writers Institute. He is an associate teaching professor of English and the director of creative writing at Quinnipiac University and the founder and executive director of Brooklyn Poets. For his work with Brooklyn Poets\, Koo was named one of the “100 Most Influential People in Brooklyn Culture” by Brooklyn Magazine.

SUMMARY:A/P/A Graduate Student Working Group Workshop: Karen Hui
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the A/P/A Graduate Student Working Group. Hosted by the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU. \nREGISTER \nGraduate students are invited to join the next workshop hosted by the A/P/A Graduate Student Working Group featuring Karen Hui (CUNY Graduate Center). Hui will present\, “Anxious Futures: Middle Class Parenting in Shenzhen\,” a chapter from her dissertation\, which examines the politics and ethics of middle-class child-rearing in contemporary Shenzhen\, China\, and its relationship to national imaginaries of the future. \nThe A/P/A Graduate Student Working Group hosts monthly workshops for graduate students to foster interdisciplinary discussion and interdepartmental collaboration on each other’s research and interests in Asian/Pacific/American Studies. \nNYU campus access guidelines: This is an in-person event\, open to graduate students from NYU and nearby universities. Registration is required. Non-NYU guests may be asked to present a government-issued photo ID. NYU guests must present their NYU ID. \nAccessibility note: This venue has an elevator and is accessible for wheelchair users. There are single-stall\, all gender restrooms available. If you have any access needs\, please email apa.rsvp@nyu.edu. \n  \nAbstract \nIn the second chapter of her dissertation\, “Anxious Futures: Middle Class Parenting in Shenzhen\,” Karen Hui argues that the makings of a middle class subjectivity in Shenzhen is anchored by the particular narratives that emerge surrounding Shenzhen’s status as China’s first Special Economic Zone (SEZ). Following the lead of critical urban studies in Shenzhen that identify the SEZ as oscillating between “experiment” and “model”\, this chapter explores how these contradictory poles embedded in Shenzhen narratives are operationalized as key sites where the reproduction of the moral conditions of development (individualism\, hard work\, entrepreneurialism) happen. Through interviews with mothers who recount their experiences of moving to and working in Shenzhen between the late 1980s and early 2000s\, Hui examines how “generational” narratives of an early-reform Shenzhen emphasize a sense of opportunity and fairness encoded in market relations\, qualities that are formed in opposition to notions of guanxi (personal connections) and state power. Inheritors of these values\, middle class mothers struggle to reconcile these Reform narratives to the contemporary moment marked by growing anxiety around economic crisis. In particular\, this ambivalence places more pressure on mothers who are deemed primarily responsible for caring for and managing children. By  focusing on how mothers contrast their own migrant experiences to the futures their children will experience\, this chapter explores parental ambivalence towards China’s future validity\, and ultimately reveals how Shenzhen remains a central site for imagining Chinese nation-state futures. \n  \nPhotograph by Karen Hui.

SUMMARY:Dance: Work in Progress: The Stranger
DESCRIPTION:The Stranger sits at the intersection of dance and installation\, delving into the stories of immigrants and resident aliens in the United States across generations. Join us for a Work in Process of The Stranger on November 7 at Hi-ARTS. \n“Coming to the United States from China for high school\, my teenage years have been filled with questions about my place in both the U.S. and my motherland – frustration with the foreign language\, illusional strivings to fit in\, anger and helplessness in defending my identity or fears towards indeterminate visa application. Yet\, the above is only one piece of a larger story. I am curious about other immigrants’ stories\, and their complicated shared emotions: fear\, hope\, sorrow\, anger…The Stranger captures their stories and mine.” — Yang Sun \nYang Sun is an award-winning dancer\, choreographer\, and director\, working in the intersection of movement\, color\, and poetry. Her strong bond with movement begins with improvisation practices in the field\, cafeteria\, corridor\, riverbank\, and other non-traditional spaces. Growing up in China and finding her path in the U.S.\, Yang holds a Summa Cum Laude Bachelor of Arts in Theater and Dance from Amherst College. She is also an alum of the Trinity/LA MAMA Performing Arts Program in New York and the NUOVAX program in Torino\, Italy. Yang joins Hi-ARTS as a SKY LAB Resident\, a developmental residency designed to support artists engaging community in their practice. During her time in residence\, Yang will continue the development of The Stranger. Alongside her company collaborators\, she will engage with five non-dance immigrant community members to join her in the development and presentation of the work.

SUMMARY:Shinnai Meets Puppetry: One Night in Winter & The Peony Lantern
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, November 7 at 7:30 pm\nFriday\, November 8 at 7:30 pm—Followed by an artist Q&A\nSaturday\, November 9 at 2:30 pm and 7:30 pm \nLimited seating. (Seating: General Admission) \nFollowing her highly popular run of SHEEP #1 at Japan Society in 2021\, NYC-based artist Sachiyo Takahashi/Nekaa Lab presents two whimsical and spooky tales: a heart-warming-then-wrenching fable on the friendship between a shapeshifting tanuki trickster and a lonely old man; and a classical Japanese ghost story to chill you to the bone. These stories were set by shinnai-bushi Grand Master Okamoto Bunya (1895-1996) to rustic\, lyrical storytelling music with shamisen accompaniment. Takahashi\, who has practiced shinnai-bushi under the authorized stage name of Okamoto Miya\, performs this expressive music while her collaborators Rowan Magee and Emma Wiseman animate these fantastical stories with original puppets and new puppetry techniques\, sure to enchant children and adults alike. (Recommended Age 8+) \nPerformed in English and Japanese with English supertitles. \n

SUMMARY:American Flygirl: The Pathbreaking Life of World War II Pilot Hazel Ying Lee
DESCRIPTION:Use code FLYGIRL24 for $10 discount. \nDuring World War II\, pathbreaker and patriot Hazel Ying Lee\, a young Chinese-American woman who had already broken stereotypes as a commercial pilot in China\, made history as the first Asian-American woman to join the Women Airforce Service Pilots\, also known as the WASPs. Repeatedly dismissed for both her gender and ethnicity\, Lee refused to be held back\, insisting on fighting—and ultimately giving her life—following her dream of flying. In discussion with historian K. Scott Wong\, biographer Susan Tate Ankeny takes us into the cockpit with this unsung American hero. \nSusan Tate Ankeny is a former teacher and the author of American Flygirl and The Girl and the Bombardier: A True Story of Resistance and Rescue in Nazi-Occupied France. K. Scott Wong (moderator) is the Charles R. Keller Professor of History at Williams College and the author or editor of multiple volumes on Asian-American history\, including Asian America: A Primary Source Reader. \n
