SUMMARY:Miyan
DESCRIPTION:Experience Jeevika Bhat’s Miyan. \nPepatián presents\, Dancing Futures: Jeevika Bhat \nMiyan explores the magical music of Tansen\, a legendary 16th century musical prodigy who pioneered the Hindustani Gwalior Gharana. Born mute\, it is mythologized that Tansen was mystically gifted with the ability to sing\, and grew up to master magical raagas which calmed rogue elephants\, caused lamps to spark and burn\, and summoned sweet rain from the sky. \nThe dancers\, as music notes and sound waves\, exist first entirely within the artist’s mind\, synesthesially responding to instinct and creative impetus. As these metaphysical ideas come bursting out of the brain to manifest as physical reality\, Miyan seeks to uncover the actual mechanism of the artistic process. How can we conceive the immense intricacy of what subconsciously happens within someone who finds their art to be easy? \nWith Keerthana Adapa\, Keshav Agiwal\, Jeevika Bhat\, Preethi Chidambaram\, Pranathi Iyer\, Samanvita Kasthuri\, Kavya Menon\, Lav Raman\, and Rami Rao featuring composition by Pranav Shikarpur\, with Shiva Kannan\, and additional music by Narayan Sharma\, Aabha Soumitra\, Rodgers & Hammerstein\, Reshmi Pratheep\, Rodion Farafontov\, Devdutta Manisha Baji\, and Noman Ali Rajper

SUMMARY:Invisible No More: East Asian Women in NYC Politics (Documentary)
DESCRIPTION:Director/co-producer Larry Tung alongside co-producer Mehrunnisa Wani will screen and discuss their documentary Invisible No More (2025)\, a project funded by a 2024 Betty Lee Research Endowment Fund award\, highlighting how Asian Americans are no longer just an emerging force in New York City politics\, but are making sweeping strides at all levels of government. Focusing particularly on Brooklyn’s newly designated Asian opportunity district—created in 2023 through the once-a-decade redistricting process to reflect the explosive growth and impact of the Asian American community—the film features City Councilmembers Linda Lee\, Sandra Ung\, and Susan Zhuang\, as well as State Senator John Liu\, as they share their journeys into public service\, detailing how they broke barriers\, took seats at the table\, and now champion the voices of their communities.

SUMMARY:Care & Connect: Ready Enough StoryJAM
DESCRIPTION:Getting to therapy can be a process. Sometimes we wonder if we really need it\, whether we’re “ready\,” or whether it will actually help. And sometimes\, we simply know that we could use some support. \nAs part of Care & Connect\, a series of public programs on mental health awareness presented by the Museum of Chinese in America in partnership with Hamilton-Madison House\, this storyJAM with the theme of Ready Enough invites four individuals to share their personal stories about coming to therapy. What made them feel “ready enough” to begin? What did they discover along the way? And how has therapy helped them navigate challenges\, understand themselves\, or maintain their mental wellness? \nFollowing their sharing\, we open the conversation to the audience. Attendees are invited to share their own experiences\, reflections\, questions\, or stories about seeking support and caring for their mental health. \nThere is no single way to begin therapy\, and no one definition of being “ready enough.” Sometimes\, simply being willing to start the conversation is a form of care.

SUMMARY:AAPI New Jersey’s 4th Annual Luminary Gala
DESCRIPTION:AAPI New Jersey will host its fourth annual Luminary Gala on Friday\, November 13\, 2026 at The Grove in Cedar Grove\, NJ\, under the theme “Bloom here. Belong here.” The event will bring together community members\, advocates\, elected officials\, and partners to celebrate our shared work advancing Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities across New Jersey. This year we will recognize three Luminary Honorees whose accomplishments and contributions have helped protect\, inspire\, and create opportunities for Asian Americans to bloom and belong here in New Jersey: \nAmol Sinha\nAmol Sinha is a nationally recognized civil rights leader who has dedicated his career to advancing racial justice\, holding institutions accountable\, promoting and defending rights and liberties\, and spearheading impactful work to protect our democracy. As Executive Director of the ACLU of New Jersey (ACLU-NJ)\, he guides the organization’s innovative integrated advocacy work\, utilizing litigation\, policy\, public education\, and strategic communications to build a more equitable society. \nEunhee Ahn\nEunhee Ahn is a traditional Korean performing artist\, choreographer\, and educator based in New Jersey. She founded Korean Traditional Dance of Choomnoori (KTDOC) in 2008 and has spent more than 20 years sharing Korean dance and drumming through performances\, public school programs\, and community events. Through her work with AAPI New Jersey\, including teaching protest drumming (pungmul nori) for the Asian Aunty Brigade\, she continues to bring Korean culture to diverse communities. \nJamie Ding\nJamie Ding (he/him) came to fame by winning 31 straight games on Jeopardy!\, the fifth-longest streak in Jeopardy! history. He won legions of fans during his run and used his platform to lift up the need for affordable housing in New Jersey and affirm the place of immigrants and people of color in the American story. A proud immigrant and public servant\, he has lived in New Jersey for the last 10 years. \nThe evening will feature a live jazz cocktail hour with The Shrinks\, a classical Indian music performance by Alok Mehta\, and inspiring awards presentations for our honorees. Guests can also bid on exclusive experiences and travel packages through our live and silent auctions. Proceeds will support AAPI New Jersey’s work to bring Asian American histories and perspectives into more schools\, strengthen partnerships among AAPI organizations statewide\, and advocate for the rights and protections of AAPI communities. \nAAPI New Jersey has become a trusted advocate and connector for the state’s Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. In 2026\, working in coalition with other advocacy groups\, the organization focused on protecting and strengthening fundamental rights including voting access\, due process under the 14th Amendment\, and birthright citizenship. We also supported communities and families affected by ICE detentions by offering legal referral services\, providing Know Your Rights trainings\, and successfully advocating for stronger protections for immigrants in New Jersey. \nThrough our Teach Asian American Stories initiative (TAAS)\, we launched “RISE & Resist\,” a program to help youth recognize and stand up against everyday bias. This year\, we also hosted the first-ever Asian American Leadership Summit\, convening hundreds of Asian Americans from across the state to discuss our communities’ challenges\, strengths\, and hopes for the future. \nThe Luminary Gala will honor these achievements\, bringing together community members\, elected officials\, nonprofit allies\, and corporate supporters for an inspiring evening of recognition\, celebration\, and solidarity. \nDress Code\nBlack Tie or Cultural Attire \nProgram\n6:30 PM Cocktails and Hors d’oevres\n8:00 PM Dinner & Program\n10:00 PM Drinks & Dancing \nComplimentary Valet Parking

SUMMARY:Carved in Time
DESCRIPTION:Jiva Performing Arts and Mesma Belsaré presents Carved in Time\, an evening of Bharatanātyam performed by Sonali Skandan and Mesma Belsaré with live Carnatic musical accompaniment\, on November 14\, 2026 at Gibney Dance in lower Manhattan. \nThe evening brings together two senior artists whose work emerges from distinct Bharatanātyam lineages. Sonali Skandan carries the Kalakshetra bani through her training with Professor C.V. Chandrasekhar and Bragha Bessell. Mesma Belsaré’s practice is rooted in the Thanjavur bani received through Padmashri Geeta Chandran and Kalakshetra bani received through Sri Shankar Hombal. A shared classical vocabulary lives within both traditions. Each lineage carries its own grammar of movement\, musicality\, and interpretation. \nCarved in Time unfolds in two parts. Skandan opens the evening with repertoire shaped through decades of engagement with the Kalakshetra tradition. Following intermission\, Belsaré presents work drawn from the Thanjavur lineage. Presented side by side\, these performances reveal the breadth contained within a single classical form. \nBharatanātyam has been transmitted across generations through direct relationships between teacher and student. Within that continuity\, each artist develops a distinct voice. The works presented in Carved in Time have lived in two bodies over decades of practice\, performance\, repetition\, and refinement\, carrying  the imprint of lineage and the marks of individual experience. \nThe performance features live Carnatic accompaniment by Shiv Subramaniam (vocals)\, Swati Seshadri (nattuvangam)\, Bala Skandan (mridangam)\, and Vishveshwar Nagarajan (flute). Live music remains central to the form\, shaping a performance built through exchange between dancer and musicians in real time. \nA post-performance conversation with the artists will follow the performance.

In this session\, we explore Kingston’s most influential books\, The Woman Warrior and China Men\, as she intended—back-to-back\, as one longer epic about Chinese Americans. These hybrid books move between fiction and nonfiction\, imagination and history\, realism and fantasy\, as they weave Chinese immigrants and their descendants into the fabric of the United States\, where they have belonged since the middle of the nineteenth century.\n\nEight Sessions (scroll down for full descriptions) \n\nJune 1: Annette Gordon-Reed on the Declaration of Independence and Lemuel Haynes’s “Liberty Further Extended”\nJuly 9: Joanne B. In the opening session of Reading America\, we will discuss the Declaration of Independence and Haynes’s response to it\, a 1776 essay entitled “Liberty Further Extended: Or Free Thoughts on the Illegality of Slave-Keeping.” \nJoanne B. Freeman on Alexander Hamilton and Alexis de Tocqueville\nThursday\, July 9\nThroughout our nation’s history\, its citizens\, residents\, and foreign observers have wrestled with the meaning of American democracy. In this session\, we look at two writers with much to say on the topic: Alexander Hamilton and Alexis de Tocqueville. Hamilton had lifelong doubts about democracy\, even as he worked to create and uphold America’s new democratic republic. Tocqueville\, a French visitor to the United States in 1831–32\, was a witness par excellence\, describing and judging American democracy as only an outsider could. Putting these men in conversation reveals democracy in all its complexity\, and exposes the beating heart of America. \nNell Painter on Ralph Waldo Emerson and Sojourner Truth\nTuesday\, July 28\nRalph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)\, giant of American letters\, and Sojourner Truth (ca. 1797-1883)\, feminist abolitionist stalwart\, were near contemporaries\, living ninety-five miles apart in Massachusetts in the 1840s. Emerson’s classic books\, Essays and Self-Reliance\, were published in the 1840s\, while Truth’s self-published Narrative of Sojourner Truth appeared in 1850. Both promoted and sold their books in person on the lecture circuit\, but they never met. In this session\, we stage a meeting of Emerson and Truth’s minds through a closer look at their lives and works. \nJoshua Cohen on Isaac Bashevis Singer\nTuesday\, August 18\nWhat makes a writer an American writer? Is it the accident of his birth\, or perhaps the circumstances of his exile? His language? His themes? His audience? The works of Isaac Bashevis Singer\, the seventh American citizen to be awarded the Nobel Prize for literature\, raise these questions in fascinating ways. This session discusses three short classics by America’s great Yiddish writer: “Gimpel the Fool\,” “The Destruction of Kreshev\,” and “The Cafeteria.” Together\, they bring the reader from Galician Poland to Manhattan’s East Side\, and illuminate starkly different jewels—sweet\, bitter\, humorous\, sexual—in the crown of this impish giant. \nParul Sehgal on Arthur Miller\nThursday\, September 24\nArthur Miller’s plays of the 1940s and 1950s—All My Sons\, Death of a Salesman\, The Crucible\, A View from the Bridge—electrified theatergoers and established him as one of the indispensable voices of the postwar era in America. With a particular focus on All My Sons\, this session explores some of the characteristic conflicts of Miller’s work—between fathers and sons\, desire and obligation\, self and community—while paying close attention to the effect his mastery of dramatic devices such as motive\, psychology\, and resolution has on readers and audience members. \nColm Tóibín on Elizabeth Bishop\nThursday\, October 28\nThe poems of Elizabeth Bishop are “more wryly radiant\, more touching\, more unaffectedly intelligent than any written in our lifetime\,” wrote James Merrill. She is “our greatest national treasure.” Bishop’s work is notable for its use of narrative\, its precision and reliance on exact detail\, its reticence and power. This session will explore\, via poems and letters\, her ideas of loss and exile\, plus the tone she takes: melancholy\, precise\, hushed\, attentive\, and careful to say nothing more than what each occasion demands. \nViet Thanh Nguyen on Maxine Hong Kingston\nTuesday\, November 17\nBeginning with her stunning 1976 memoir The Woman Warrior\, Maxine Hong Kingston has forged a profound\, richly imagined\, and genre-defying narrative of the American experience from her vantage as the daughter of Chinese immigrants. In this session\, we explore Kingston’s most influential books\, The Woman Warrior and China Men\, as she intended—back-to-back\, as one longer epic about Chinese Americans. These hybrid books move between fiction and nonfiction\, imagination and history\, realism and fantasy\, as they weave Chinese immigrants and their descendants into the fabric of the United States\, where they have belonged since the middle of the nineteenth century. \nNamwali Serpell on William Faulkner and Toni Morrison\nThursday\, December 3\nWhile delivering the keynote address at a 1985 Faulkner conference in Oxford\, Mississippi\, Toni Morrison remarked that “in a very personal way\, as a reader\, he had an enormous effect” on her. Morrison’s engagement with Faulkner was a lifelong project\, from her examination of The Sound and the Fury in her master’s thesis to ongoing reflections on his work in university lectures. This session delves into novels by Faulkner and Morrison—Absalom\, Absalom! and A Mercy\, respectively—to explore their treatment of Native Americans\, their interest in co-created stories and invented language\, Sutpen’s Hundred in relation to Jacob Vaark’s unfinished house\, and the overlapping themes of possessive love and stopped time. \n\n\nCourse curator: Bernard Schwartz \n\n\nLibrary of America\, a nonprofit organization\, champions our nation’s cultural heritage by publishing America’s greatest writing in authoritative new editions and providing resources for readers to explore this rich\, living legacy.

SUMMARY:Book Launch | Tiger's Mouth by Lucy Tan
DESCRIPTION:When two young men meet during a tech internship\, it sparks an intense friendship—and even more intense competition—in this sweeping novel of privilege\, identity\, and ambition from the acclaimed author of What We Were Promised. \nJack Chen\, the oldest son of caterers from Queens\, is an expert at studying the rich from afar. When he finagles his way into a prestigious internship at tech giant K.O. Systems\, he’s prepared to fake everything: his credentials\, his confidence\, even his past. What he isn’t prepared for is his officemate\, Jack Owens\, the depressed son of the company’s billionaire founder\, who’s only there for a summer reprieve from his father’s scrutiny at the family vacation house. \nTheir connection is immediate\, built on mutual admiration. Chen sees in Owens the advantages he’s been denied; Owens sees in Chen someone free of the pain he’s been taught to hide. Owens\, Chen\, and Chen’s girlfriend quickly become close friends\, but by summer’s end the three can no longer outrun the lies they’ve told themselves and each other. As pressures build throughout the next few years\, the two Jacks circle each other like opponents in their favorite board game\, Go\, each chasing the life the other was born into\, from career to family to lovers. But the path to success and matters of the heart can test even the closest of friendships—and not all of them survive. \nNostalgic\, heart-wrenching\, and propulsive\, Tiger’s Mouth is a nuanced portrait of complex friendship\, family dynamics\, and love in its most unexpected forms. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nLucy Tan is the author of What We Were Promised\, which was a Barnes and Noble Discover Pick\, longlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize\, and named a best book of the year by The Washington Post. Tan holds an MFA in creative writing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, where she was winner of the August Derleth Prize. A recipient of support from Kundiman and the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing\, Tan has published in journals such as American Short Fiction\, McSweeney’s\, and Ploughshares. She currently lives and writes in Seattle\, where she is also a bookseller at Secret Garden Books. \nIN CONVERSATION WITH \nJoanne Kwong is the president of Pearl River Mart\, the iconic NYC Asian emporium established in 1971. \nAfter the 2016 closing of the historic store\, she joined her in-laws and reinvented the brand\, establishing new locations and pop-ups in SoHo\, Chelsea\, Chinatown\, and Flushing. \nToday\, under Joanne’s leadership\, Pearl River remains the joyful shopping experience beloved by generations. It now also serves as a hub for the AAPI community and a springboard for entrepreneurs and artists. Pearl River Mart’s community-based approach has been recognized by The Wall Street Journal as “the future of retail” and by New York Magazine as one of its “Reasons to Love NY.” \nBefore leading Pearl River\, Joanne was an attorney\, law professor\, and non-profit communications executive. She serves on the boards of New York Public Radio\, Light Up Chinatown\, the Meatpacking Business Improvement District\, and the Columbia College Alumni Association\, and was appointed to the U.S. Commission to Study the Creation of a National Museum of Asian Pacific American History and Culture. In recent years\, Joanne has been named one of Crain’s NY Business’ Notable Asian Leaders\, Gold House’s A100 Most Impactful Asians\, and Time Out NY’s “9 Amazing Women Who Changed New York for the Better.”

SUMMARY:Concert: Aga Khan Master Musicans with Vincent Peirani & Vincent Ségal
DESCRIPTION:One night only! Join us for a special concert with the Aga Khan Master Musicians\, with Vincent Peirani & Vincent Ségal. \nThe artist collective of Aga Khan Master Musicians was formed through the Aga Khan Music Programme\, a multi-faceted education\, performance\, production\, commissioning\, and awards platform that convenes leading artists from the Eastern and Mediterranean worlds to explore what happens when long-travelled musical paths meet again in the present. \nThe members of Aga Khan Master Musicians and their special guests — collectively representing roots in Central Asia\, the Middle East\, and France — draw on both their cultural heritages and their personal experiences\, including encounters with displacement and migration\, to create a modern sound that resonates across continents and centuries. Here\, the group performs a fresh program of jointly created works inspired by the ancient routes that once connected trade and culture between Asia and the Mediterranean. The instrumentation itself embodies this spirit of cross-cultural dialogue: Feras Charestan on the qanun\, a plucked string instrument of the Middle East; Abbos Kosimov on the doira\, the traditional Uzbek frame drum; Vincent Peirani on the accordion; Basel Rajoub on the saxophone and the duclar\, a Middle Eastern wind instrument; Vincent Ségal on the cello; and Yurdal Tokcan on the oud\, the lute-like plucked instrument emblematic of the Middle East. \nThe Aga Khan Master Musicians\nThe Aga Khan Master Musicians create music inspired by their own deep roots in the cultures of the Middle East and Mediterranean Basin\, and Central Asia. Brought together by the Aga Khan Music Programme to explore how musical innovation can contribute to the revitalization of cultural heritage\, the Master Musicians are venerated performers and composer-arrangers who appear on the world’s most prestigious stages while also serving as preeminent teachers\, mentors\, and curators. Each of these exceptional artists has achieved mastery within a rigorous musical tradition defined by canonical styles\, repertoires\, pedagogy\, and performance techniques. At the same time\, they share a belief that tradition can serve as an invaluable compass for an artistic search into new forms of creativity inspired but not constrained by the past. This search has led to a strikingly original body of work composed\, arranged\, and performed by the Master Musicians\, often joined by distinguished guests. \n

SUMMARY:Rabbit God: A Queer Chinese Fantasy
DESCRIPTION:Rabbit God: A Queer Chinese Fantasy is a contemporary dance-theater work rooted in the folklore\, mythology\, and spiritual traditions of Fujian\, China. Blending contemporary dance\, martial arts staff work\, immersive projection\, and theatrical storytelling\, the piece transports audiences into a fantastical world where ancient myth collides with a queer present. \nInspired by the legend of the Rabbit God\, a deity associated with same-sex love in Chinese folklore\, the work follows a journey through friendship\, love\, desire\, identity\, loss\, and redemption — where the boundaries between human\, divine\, and underworld begin to blur. An original sound score and live vocals bring the audience into this world. \nVisually rich and physically dynamic\, the piece combines expressive movement\, martial arts\, and dreamlike projection to create a cinematic stage world — inviting audiences into a universe where forgotten stories are reclaimed and brought back to life. \nPerformance dates/times:\nThur-Sat\, 7:30pm\, Nov 19-21 | Sun\, 3:00pm\, Nov 22 \nABOUT THE CHOREOGRAPHER: \nJiemin is a NY-based dance artist and choreographer. SUMMARY:NIKKATSU’S GOLDEN AGE OF EROS
DESCRIPTION:Amid the last breaths of Japan’s studio era as the strain of plummeting attendance and the rise of television brought the industry into collapse\, Japan’s oldest film studio\, Nikkatsu\, abandoned mainstream productions in favor of erotica. An unprecedented move by any measure\, Nikkatsu’s decision established the legendary Roman Porno\, a prestige line of studio-backed softcore cinema that\, for 17 years\, would usher in an era of creatively ambitious and artistic cinematic expression\, fostering a new wave of young talents who would go on to shape 80s and 90s mainstream cinema. \nAdhering to a strict set of conventions—a sex scene every 15 or so minutes\, brisk 70-minute runtimes\, medium-sized budgets and tight 10-day shooting schedules—the Roman Porno became known as one of the few avenues for aspiring filmmakers to make their debut and hone their craft as the studio apprenticeship system buckled. Nagisa Oshima\, in critique of the genre\, would declare\, “Roman Porno films take sex as their subject matter but not as their theme”—but it was precisely this distinction that allowed the genre to flourish while earning the respect and praise of critics. \nCommemorating 55 years since Nikkatsu’s move to instate the Roman Porno in 1971\, Japan Society presents a unique selection from across its 17-year reign—a bold period that has since become an essential part of Japanese film history. \nDisclaimer: the films are recommended for audiences age 18 and above.
