SUMMARY:Guest House: Welcome Home
DESCRIPTION:Portraiture is as old as the pharaohs of Egypt. While mediums such as drawing\, painting\, and photography dominate the practice\, rendering a three-dimensional likeness yielded astounding work across centuries\, from the chiseled marble of the Renaissance to Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s sensuous sculptures. Unlike marble\, stone\, or bronze\, wax possesses a luminosity that makes it ideal for human approximation. In the last century\, the art of the wax figure has evolved from commercial spectacle into a medium for serious artistic exploration. \nBased in Zhongshan\, China\, and with three decades of experience\, the artist Zhou Xuerong has created more than 900 wax figures through her studio Grand Orient Wax Art. In her first U.S. exhibition\, Guest House: Welcome Home\, she depicts human figures\, each a work of original artistic interpretation\, engaged in six rituals that shape Asian life. With a nod to American photographer Gregory Crewdson’s staged tableaux exploring the ennui of suburban life\, Zhou zooms in and situates her protagonists in common domestic scenes: sipping tea\, practicing calligraphy\, inserting acupuncture needles\, cooking with a wok\, sharing a meal\, and playing the erhu\, a two-stringed fiddle. \nEach figure is dressed in a qipao\, a historical silhouette that originated as loose-fitting military gowns worn by nobles during the Qing Dynasty. At the turn of the 20th century\, Shanghai became a center of international trade\, influencing local tailors to draw on Western design to nip the qipao’s waistline\, narrow its skirt\, and lengthen its side slit. Today\, the dress’s form is a fixture in both Eastern and Western fashion. \nThe figures’ faces evoke familiar presences — cultural icons reimagined and transplanted into a room where their identity dissolves into ambiguity\, fluctuating between the everyday and the uncanny. They sit at a tea table\, lift a calligraphy brush\, pluck at a classical instrument\, and together pose a critical question at the heart of the artist’s commentary: what happens when one culture’s icons are transposed into the traditions of another? \nZhou’s quiet interiority of place and person is an inheritance made visible — for insiders\, a mirror; for outsiders\, a window. We must consider how Chinese culture\, once mocked and derided\, has traveled\, and now shapes a global imagination. Above all\, Guest House: Welcome Home is a cultural bridge. Zhou illuminates connection through an emotive stillness: a turned wrist\, a pursed lip\, a downward gaze. Her wax guests partake in ritual as a form of welcome and practice as a gesture of love. \nGuest House: Welcome Home is an original work of fine art and cultural commentary by Zhou Xuerong. The exhibition is not sponsored by\, affiliated with\, or endorsed by any individual to whom the sculptures may bear a resemblance. \nDates: Sep 11 2026 to Sep 27 2026\nTimes: 12:00 PM – 6:00 PM

SUMMARY:Theresa Hak Kyung Cha: Multiple Offerings
DESCRIPTION:Artists Space presents “Multiple Offerings”\, the first retrospective in twenty-five years dedicated to the groundbreaking work of the artist Theresa Hak Kyung Cha. She produced an expansive range of works comprising performances for film and video\, installation\, photography\, artist’s books (including her genre-defying book Dictée from 1982)\, and works on paper\, which will fill Artists Space’s entire first floor. In her lifetime\, Cha contributed to experimental art scenes in New York City\, San Francisco\, Paris\, and beyond. Her work has had a quietly profound influence on subsequent generations of artists. \nAfter emigrating from South Korea to the United States\, Cha enrolled at UC Berkeley in 1969\, where she studied art practice\, comparative literature\, and film. Keenly attuned to the active role that audiences play in the creation of meaning\, she prioritized nonlinear narratives to allow for more open-ended forms of interpretation—what she termed a method of “Multiple Telling with Multiple Offering.” This retrospective adopts her framework to allow for a range of entry points into the work\, guiding visitors through the themes—memory\, displacement\, and the mutability of language\, among others—that recur in Cha’s oeuvre. \nCha moved to New York City in 1980\, where she supported herself with several jobs while pursuing her artistic career. She worked as an administrative assistant in the European Sculpture and Decorative Arts Department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, taught video art at Elizabeth Seton College in Yonkers\, and served as an editor at Tanam Press\, a publishing imprint dedicated to artists’ books that was founded by her friend and collaborator Reese Williams. \nOn November 5\, 1982\, Cha’s short but prolific career came to an end when she was murdered just weeks before her planned exhibition at Artists Space. At the time of her death\, Cha was producing a new photographic series inspired by her time working at the Met. Multiple Offerings presents that unfinished series of black-and-white prints alongside nearly one hundred artworks and archival materials from across her career\, highlighting the inventive\, playful\, and meditative methods of Cha’s practice.

SUMMARY:The Cherry Orchard
DESCRIPTION:Considered one of the great plays of the modern era\, Anton Chekhov’s final play about a family on the edge of ruin is radically reimagined by acclaimed director and dramatist Simon Stone\, who returns to the Armory following his blistering Obie-Award winning take on Federico García Lorca’s Yerma (2018). His refreshing adaptation resets the action from Russia to a rapidly transforming modern-day Seoul\, South Korea\, where the original noble siblings are now corporate heirs struggling to adapt to a world that has moved on without them\, suffocated by a rising middle class and wealthy self-made entrepreneurs. Caught between the past and the present\, hope and despair\, tradition and innovation\, the chaebol family is forced to grapple with the inevitable forces of change. \nJeon Do-yeon is well-known for her roles in You Are My Sunshine (2005) and Secret Sunshine (2007)\, for which she was awarded Best Actress at the 60th Cannes Film Festival and making her the first Korean actor to receive such recognition. The talented actress stars alongside Emmy-nominated actor Park Hae-soo of worldwide Squid Game fame as well as a stellar all-Korean ensemble cast in spontaneous\, immediate performances. Equal parts tragedy and comedy\, the story unfolds on a masterfully designed set by celebrated architectural designer Saul Kim that features a modern\, transparent glass house allowing audiences a voyeuristic peek into the characters’ private lives. An intimate\, bittersweet portrait that is deeply South Korean and yet universally moving\, this must-see reinterpretation is a timely reflection of loss\, change\, and social transformation. \nTickets start at $45 (including fees) \n🎟️ Special Offer for KCCNY followers!\n✨ Save 10% on tickets for all performances\n🎫 Use promo code: CHERRYKCCNY\n⏰ Offer valid through 11:59 PM (ET) on August 21\, 2026. Standard ticketing fees apply. \n🗣️ Performed in Korean with English captions. \nPhoto credit: Studio AL\, LG Arts Center

SUMMARY:Yuen Woo-ping Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:In a Hong Kong film industry overflowing with martial arts talent\, Yuen Woo-ping stands apart. His legendary influence\, in a career spanning more than five decades\, has earned him the widely celebrated\, industry-bestowed moniker “天下第一武指\,” which translates as “The Number One Martial Arts Director Under the Sky.” As both film director and action choreographer\, Yuen helped elevate martial arts cinema into a sophisticated art form\, blending technical precision with character\, poetry\, and astonishing physical invention. His choreography prioritizes movement legibility\, spatial clarity\, and expressive geometry over brute force\, reshaping the visual grammar of global action filmmaking. \nBorn into a family of Peking Opera performers\, Yuen grew up in a tradition where drama\, martial arts\, acrobatics\, and dance were inseparable—a heritage linking him to contemporaries like Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung\, who emerged from the same rigorous training. Yuen’s father\, Yuen Siu-tien\, an accomplished opera performer\, actor\, and martial arts director\, introduced his children to the film set. The Yuen siblings began as stunt performers and rose through the ranks. Together they formed the Yuen Clan\, becoming some of Hong Kong cinema’s most respected stunt performers and action directors. \nYuen’s first two films as a director\, Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow and Drunken Master (both 1978)\, launched Chan’s stardom. By shifting martial arts cinema away from solemn violence to wit\, personality\, and comedic invention\, the films established a template for Chan’s career. Yuen went on to collaborate with icons like Hung\, Jet Li\, Michelle Yeoh\, and Donnie Yen\, while consistently demonstrating an unparalleled ability to train performers of all backgrounds—including Hollywood stars like Keanu Reeves and Uma Thurman—in his intensive “fight camps.” \nYuen’s work on The Matrix (1999)\, which seamlessly integrates Hong Kong wirework—human-controlled harnesses and cables that propel and suspend performers—with science fiction\, fundamentally altered how Hollywood approaches action. With Crouching Tiger\, Hidden Dragon (2000) he showed that martial arts could deepen a film’s emotional and intellectual resonance as much as its spectacle. Yuen’s extraordinary adaptability made him the definitive collaborator for visually distinct auteurs as diverse as Stephen Chow\, Ang Lee\, Quentin Tarantino\, Tsui Hark\, the Wachowskis\, and Wong Kar Wai. Decades after his debut\, Yuen’s latest epic\, Blades of the Guardians (2026)\, proves his vision still dictates the rhythm of modern action cinema. \n\n\n\n\n\nIron Monkey (少年黃飛鴻之鐵馬騮).1993. SUMMARY:Best by 07/21/2026
DESCRIPTION:A residency-then-exhibition Artists: Clare Hu\, Tianyi Sun\, and Shaan Ken Rao \n398 West Street\, New York\, NY 10014 Residency: July 21 – September 16\, 2026 Exhibition: September 17 – October 17\, 2026 Opening Reception with the artists: Thursday\, September 17\, 2026 | 6-8 PM \nEli Klein Gallery is pleased to present Best by 07/21/2026\, a residency-then-exhibition featuring artists Clare Hu\, Tianyi Sun\, and Shaan Ken Rao\, opening on its own expiration date. Following At-Will Adaptation (2024)\, the gallery’s residency program returns this year for its second installment\, running from July 21st and culminating in a three-artist exhibition on Thursday\, September 17th. The three artists\, working in various mediums such as sculpture\, weaving\, painting\, and photography\, will create entirely new bodies of work using Eli Klein Gallery as their studio. The gallery will be open to the public during normal business hours throughout the duration of the residency. \n“Can the concept of the human survive discovering how the “sausage” of us is actually made\, what we really look and smell like at the cellular level?” This question\, raised by the writer and scholar Sophie Lewis in her catalog essay “New Wombs for Old Men” of the New Museum’s inaugural exhibition “New Humans\,” challenges the default practice of separating the maker from their associated defecations during the formation of a public-facing identity. On a metaphorical and non-visceral level\, contemporary art’s birth-giving process today resembles an ectogenesis\, with the “sausage-making” process susceptible to both curated previews and packaged commercialization. An artist’s studio is only alive when it breathes and excretes\, and more so when the discarded substances are studied\, categorized\, archived\, and recycled.

SUMMARY:Tchah Sup Kim: The Key to a New World
DESCRIPTION:Tchah Sup Kim (1940–2022) was an artist whose lifelong practice explored fundamental questions of civilization\, the universe\, existence\, and humanity. Moving beyond formal experimentation\, his work sought new ways of seeing and understanding the world—often by challenging established boundaries between East and West\, the individual and the cosmos\, and the finite and the infinite. \nKim moved to New York in 1974 and studied printmaking at Pratt Institute\, where he began developing a distinctive visual language. His landmark etching Triangle Between Infinites (1976)\, now in the collection of The Museum of Modern Art\, New York\, introduced the triangle as a central motif in his practice. Rather than treating it as a closed geometric form\, Kim opened its vertex\, transforming the triangle into a structure of openness\, circulation\, and connection. \nThroughout the 1980s\, his work reflected his experiences of migration\, otherness\, and diasporic identity in New York. After returning to Korea in 1990\, his inquiry expanded toward broader questions of civilization\, history\, and the origins of humanity. \nNew York played a pivotal role in this artistic and intellectual journey. It was here that Kim encountered the center of Western modernism while also beginning to question its prevailing systems of thought. Presented now in New York\, The Key to a New World revisits that formative relationship and considers his practice through a contemporary lens. The exhibition title comes from a phrase found in one of Kim’s own notes. For him\, a “new world” was not simply a vision of the future\, but the possibility of thinking and seeing beyond existing frameworks. \n\nTuesday – Friday: 10 AM – 6 PM / Saturday: 11 AM – 5 PM\nClosed on Sunday and Monday.\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nAbout the Artist \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTchah Sup Kim received his BFA from Seoul National University in 1963. With a grant from John D. Rockefeller 3rd Fund Fellowship\, he completed his MFA at the Pratt Institute in New York in 1976. \nWorking primarily in paint and mixed media\, Kim explores the principles of cosmos through nature and its phenomena. He raises questions regarding the universal truth that human beings have sought in and out of history. His artistic journey can be divided into three major periods: from 1965 to 1982\, during his early years in Korea and New York\, his work is characterized by a focus on geometry; from 1983 to 1993\, during his New York period\, he turns toward geopolitical and historical themes; and from 1993 to 2022\, after leaving New York for the rural village of Naepyung-ri in Korea\, and later alternating between the two locations\, he focuses his work on geography and nature. \nTchah Sup Kim’s artwork is currently housed in the collections of many renowned institutions\, including the Museum of Modern Art (NY)\, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY)\, and the National Museum of Contemporary Art (Gwacheon\, Korea).

SUMMARY:Afterlayers: Tai Hwa Goh & Julia Kwon
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception: Thursday\, September 17\, 2026\, 5-7pm \nTwo artists transform traditional materials–textile and paper–to explore themes of identity and memory. Tai Hwa Goh creates intricate\, layered installations from printed and cut paper\, inspired by organic forms\, landscapes\, and the relationship between the interior and exterior. Goh’s process pushes the limits of traditional printmaking\, as she modifies the characteristics of paper and thin fabric by covering with batik or ironing thin sheets of beeswax onto her prints\, deliberately obscuring the underlying images. She then uses techniques like sewing\, gluing\, and manipulating printed materials to construct intricate\, honeycomb-like structures. Found objects seamlessly integrate into the work\, reflecting the blending of the personal and the universal\, as well as natural and artificial elements.Through this process\, the imagery gradually moves away from recognizable forms\, and the dense layers serve as a space where nature\, memory\, and personal experience intertwine. Her installations invite viewers to contemplate the balance between the natural world and human existence\, and how everyday moments can reveal deeper insights into our lives. \nJulia Kwon sews interpretive Korean textiles\, specifically in the form of patchwork bojagi (Korean object-wrapping cloth)\, to critique received notions of Asiatic femininity and challenge reductive\, easily legible identities. Although her bojagi textiles may initially be perceived as traditionally Korean\, the patchwork designs are actually derived from urgent contemporary sociopolitical issues and events. Her work moves beyond simply representing minority identities as she aims to comment on the interconnected systems of oppression. Kwon’s practice contests the notion of authenticity and explores the complexities involved in constructing identities within the current framework of cultural hybridity\, intersectionality\, and the collective pursuit of social justice \nThe Korea Society Gallery is open only by appointment.\nThe appointment must be made at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled visit. \nGallery Hours: Monday-Friday 10 AM-4:30 PM\nBy Appointment Only

SUMMARY:Zine* Together
DESCRIPTION:Please join Asia Art Archive in America on Thursday\, September 17th from 5-8pm for the opening reception of their exhibition\, Zine﹡ Together. \nZine﹡ Together is the first exhibition of its kind to examine Asian American zines not only as objects\, but as actions—creative\, collective\, and relational. Drawing from Asia Art Archive in America’s Reading Room collection\, this exhibition highlights collaboratively produced zines from 2010 to the present\, alongside newly commissioned projects and prompts that trace zine-making as a mode of shared authorship and community building. \nIn the 1960s and 1970s\, zines (short for “magazines” or “fan-zines”) were characterized by their photo-copied\, staple-bound formats and emerged as popular do-it-yourself platforms for sharing counter-cultural socio-political programs and avant-garde art practice. In more recent decades and particularly in Asian American communities\, zines have served as a place to explore artistic narratives\, diasporic histories\, and collective responses to marginalization. \nKey to this exhibition is a commissioned research project and essay by Michelle Yee\, PhD\, and Elizabeth Chung that investigates the recent history of Asian American zines in relation to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic and the parallel rise in anti-Asian violence across the United States. Situating zine-making within this moment of crisis\, the research frames the medium as one of many grassroots strategies for care\, documentation\, and solidarity. Together\, the exhibition and research project position zines not as peripheral ephemera\, but as vital cultural tools that register and record how communities respond in times of uncertainty. \nZine﹡ Together\, itself a collaborative project\, is organized by Claire Kim\, Susanna Chang\, Sarula Bao\, Michelle Yee\, Elizabeth Chung\, Mary Y. Yang\, Chen Luo\, and Tasnima Tanzim.

SUMMARY:New York Premiere of Award-Winning Drama Mulan
DESCRIPTION:Use code DANCE30 for 30% off\nChina Arts and Entertainment Group (CAEG) presents the New York debut of the award-winning dance drama MULAN produced and performed by China Ningbo Performance & Arts Group\, with four performances only from September 18-20\, 2026 at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts\, 20 Lincoln Center Plaza\, NYC. Performances: Fri & Sat at 7:30pm\, Sat at 1:30pm\, Sun at 2:30pm. Tickets start at $30 and can be purchased online https://www.davidhkochtheater.com/tickets-and-events/mulan. \nWinner of the China Dance Lotus Award\, the highest honor in Chinese dance\, MULAN is a sweeping\, visually resplendent dance drama that reimagines one of China’s most enduring legends for global audiences. In that legend shaped by filial piety\, bravery\, and the yearning for peace\, a young Chinese heroine disguises herself as a man to take her father’s place on the battlefield — and rises to eternal renown. Beyond depicting a warrior’s journey\, it unfolds a profound narrative of self-identity\, inner growth\, and human compassion — the story of a woman who stands firm for her family\, her homeland\, and her true self. \nCreated by award-winning choreographers Zhou Liya and Han Zhen\, the production masterfully merges classical Chinese dance\, martial arts\, and epic theatrical aesthetics into a powerful movement language. Where traditional retellings focus solely on Mulan’s heroism\, this interpretation reveals her grace\, vulnerability\, and unwavering longing for peace. \nCentral to the production is a monumental 15-meter revolving stage\, which acts as a quiet yet expressive presence: heightening the intensity of battle scenes\, framing intimate emotional moments\, and symbolizing the cycle of life\, war\, and remembrance. Complemented by exquisitely crafted period costumes and atmospheric lighting\, the design elevates an ancient legend into an immersive contemporary theatrical experience — where East meets West\, tradition meets innovation\, and history comes vividly to life. Evocative original music weaves traditional Chinese folk instruments with dramatic symphonic orchestration. Transcending linguistic and cultural boundaries\, it resonates with universal values: loyalty\, sacrifice\, self-discovery\, and the eternal pursuit of peace.\nA flagship production of CAEG’s Image China initiative\, MULAN makes its New York debut at the David H. Koch Theater this fall. Majestic and unmissable\, MULAN is far more than a dance drama — it is a timeless human story crafted for the world stage. \nCreative Team\nChief Directors / Choreographers: Zhou Liya\, Han Zhen\nPlaywright: Zhu Hai\nComposition: Du Ming\nExecutive Directors: Li Chao\, Lv Zimin\nSet Design: Tan Ze’en\nLighting Design: Han Jiang\nCostume Design: Wang Yukuan\nMake-up Design: Jia Lei\nChoreographers: Han Zhen\, Zhou Liya\, Lv Zimin\, Li Chao\, Liu Wei \nLeading Roles (Casting Subject to Change)\nMulan: Tang Xinyi\nGeneral Wei: Xia Tian\, Wang Zheng\nRou’er: Wu Wei\nMulan’s Father: Wang Zheng\, Jiang An\nLittle Mulan: Liu Siyu\nEunuch: Du Boyan \nArtist Bios\nZhou Liya (Chief Director / Choreographer)\nA graduate of the Choreography Department at Beijing Dance Academy\, Zhou Liya is a resident choreographer and stage director with the China Oriental Song and Dance Troupe. SUMMARY:Synthetic Mobility
DESCRIPTION:Fou Gallery is pleased to present “Synthetic Mobility”\, a two-person exhibition featuring Tokyo- and New York-based artist Ai Makita and China-born\, Houston-based kinetic artist Sizhu Li\, on view from September 19 through November 8\, 2026. The exhibition brings to the fore important questions about the interaction between technology and humans\, considering how larger societal shifts affect the way artists represent humanity and reconstituted spaces. \nThe concept of the exhibition is connected to Timothy Morton’s idea of hyperobjects\, according to which we cannot fully perceive larger structures surrounding us and widely distributed across space and time\, but can try to describe their attributes and make a reasonable guess about their true nature. Synthetic mobility – the artificial generation of realistic human movement patterns using advanced algorithms – is a phenomenon related to the new acceleration of living rhythms promoted by digital progress. As the world is enveloped in ideological and cultural conflicts\, Makita and Li consider what it means to remain individuals today\, and how changes in technology alter our sense of perception and our mode of existence. \nAi Makita presents oil paintings\, several of them developed in conjunction with the AI model Midjourney and others based on images created in Photoshop by folding aluminum sheets. The depicted forms represent abstract conjunctions of pipes\, conduits\, and industrial infrastructure. Folded materials result in labyrinths of fluidity and line resembling a circulatory or nervous system\, an organism’s internal anatomy\, or an invisible technological network now made visible. The created conduits recall flowing rivers\, transcended thresholds\, and the linearity of time. Close conceptual connection with Minimalism makes Makita’s stretched lines internally connected to Donald Judd looking at the properties and the rigidity of the structures as well as relation of this (in)stability to the current historical moment. Process art likewise plays a significant role in Makita’s practice\, albeit in a form more appropriate to its new\, updated version\, where the digital has taken the place of the physical. Her paintings leave the viewer with a sense of wonder about where these meandering curves are leading and whether there is any specific destination. Mystery emerges not through mystical effects\, but through the inability to grasp the full picture\, pushing us to step away while also looking closer. \nSizhu Li presents sculptures made primarily from aluminum sheets and industrial fans. In Pushing Hands (2024–present)\, opposing forces travel through an industrial metal wave\, creating a rhythm of tension and equilibrium that references the Taoist principle of balance. The title directly refers to the fundamental Tai Chi practice of Tui Shou\, or “pushing hands\,” centered on sensing\, yielding to\, and balancing opposing forces. Evolving from her earlier project Moonment\, Li uses programmed fans and suspended aluminum sheets to construct a live\, percussive environment of moving metallic waves. In Yuanbao (2026)\, she brings the traditional Chinese symbol of wealth and blessing into conversation with the ephemeral form of clouds\, moving between material and spiritual aspirations\, permanence and transience. Meanwhile\, Oops\, Caught’ya! (2026) turns the clamp into both a generative and restraining device\, using movement\, suspension\, and pressure to consider freedom\, constraint\, instability\, and balance. \nTogether\, the two artists create a dialogue in which materials work as experimental tools to devise new understandings of where we are as a human species. Both artists look at motion\, structure\, and encounter as facilitated by materials\, planes\, and color. Makita’s paintings examine the transformations and limits caused by new synthetic mobility\, while Li’s sculptures engage the same idea through three-dimensional objects. Neither artist provides specific arguments or answers; instead\, they offer aesthetic tools that can help broaden our understanding of the technological forces increasingly shaping contemporary life.

SUMMARY:WBB Graphic Novel Book Club: Raging Clouds by Yudori
DESCRIPTION:Join us for September’s Graphic Novel Book Club pick: Raging Clouds by Yudori \nAmélie is a brilliant woman trapped in the restricting social mores of high Dutch society in the mid-16th century. Her marriage to Hans\, a swashbuckling merchant\, is a terrible match. While he charms the townsfolk\, at home he is her intellectual inferior and treats her with cruelty and sexual violence. Expected to be a devoted housewife\, Amélie can only be her true\, free-spirited self when Hans travels away on business — when she can explore the town alone\, lose herself in literature\, and study winged animals to learn about the mechanics of flight. She looks to the skies and dreams of flying far away. Her life changes when Hans returns from his journey with Sahara\, a slave mistress from a distant land. The two women are drawn to each other — each recognizing their confinement in a world dominated by men — and work together to seek their freedom. \nTold as a fiercely feminist story and spectacularly illustrated\, Raging Clouds is the dazzling graphic novel debut of Korean comic book artist Yudori. In her lush manga style\, Yudori imagines the period in rich detail with careful attention to settings and costumes\, while evoking the cultural and societal standards of the time. She creates complex women characters who grapple with indignity over their social position\, engage in lustful fantasies\, and ultimately relish in seizing agency in their lives. Raging Clouds is a powerful story about the role of women in society\, the reality of existing within a non-consensual relationship\, and the struggle to push back against the boundaries these women have been boxed into.

SUMMARY:Negotiated Skin
DESCRIPTION:An immersive solo exhibition by Freda Xinyue Xia exploring body\, repair\, and transformation through biomaterial textiles and paintings. \n\nNegotiated Skin is an immersive\, interdisciplinary solo exhibition by New York-based artist Freda Xinyue Xia\, presented at Gallery 456\, the visual arts exhibition space of the Chinese American Arts Council. Bringing together wearable sculpture\, suspended fiber works\, mineral-pigment paintings\, and Chinese paintings\, the exhibition creates an evolving environment in which soft sculptural forms and paintings enter into dialogue across body\, material\, culture\, time\, and space. \nFor this exhibition\, Xia develops translucent\, membrane-like forms through layering\, suspension\, collapse\, and visible acts of repair. Instead of depicting the body directly\, these works register its presence\, moving between garment\, sculpture\, and installation. Alongside them\, mineral-pigment paintings of heads glimpsed in New York City subway spaces offer a figurative counterpoint\, tracing bodies in motion\, proximity\, and separation. \nAcross these media\, Negotiated Skin explores boundaries between intimacy and exposure\, abstraction and figuration\, material fragility and shared presence. Skin emerges not as a fixed border\, but as a changing surface shaped by pressure\, contact\, and repair. Visitors are invited to move through the installation and encounter the work through proximity\, movement\, and perception. \nChinese American Arts Council’s Gallery 456 Visual Arts Exhibition Series is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
