SUMMARY:Dreamer's Perspective: Through My Lens
DESCRIPTION:For the third year in a row\, the Center for All Abilities (CAA) is hosting a summer arts showcase\, dedicated to platforming the art of neurodivergent and special needs individuals. This year’s show\, “Dreamer’s Perspective: Through My Lens\,” is focused on portraits\, self-portraits\, and reflections of self-identity — how you see yourself\, how you move through the world\, and what makes you who you are. We encourage artists to share work that reflects personal experience\, perception\, and the many ways people navigate and express their inner worlds. This exhibition aims to create a space for thoughtful\, authentic\, and expansive representations of selfhood and lived experience. \nThe Center for All Abilities is a nonprofit based in Manhattan’s Chinatown which serves as a supportive resource for the special needs community\, particularly among Chinese immigrant families. We provide creative arts therapy\, vocational training\, and community-based programming and workshops to support the whole family. \nThis exhibition is in collaboration with Long Story Short Galleries\, which generously provides their venue and support. The show is also in partnership with Extreme Kids and Crew\, a nonprofit which provides a welcoming\, supportive space for young people with disabilities\, their families and friends\, to connect\, create and learn.

SUMMARY:This Memory doesn't Taste like a Birthday Cake
DESCRIPTION:“What does memory taste like?” Having never celebrated a birthday\, L is throwing her dream 28th—and you’re all invited\, woohoo! \nEmerging theater artist Andi Cui is premiering her new solo play\, “This Memory Doesn’t Taste like a Birthday Cake” at Theater for the New City on Aug. 23-25\, as part of the Dream Up Theater Fest. \n“This Memory doesn’t Taste like a Birthday Cake” is a solo play inspired by real-life stories of children with incarcerated parents in China. The play digs a rabbit hole through L’s simple action of cooking favorite childhood dishes\, bringing back fragmented memories with almost neurotic details of texture\, taste\, and smell to the present stage. 2 dishes and a long awaited cake for an imagined birthday\, L unfolds her past in an intimate exploration of the childhood wounds that she once was unable to articulate. \nWritten and Directed by Andi Cui and starring Athena Yin\, this play expands beyond parental incarceration to explore the unspoken ways how love\, loss\, guilt and hope wrestel in Asian families\, and how can one make peace with a childhood fraught with regret and unresolved feelings. It stands as a vital\, deeply personal response to global crises of youth mental health and familial trauma. \nTICKETS\nTickets to “This Memory” is currently on sale by visiting: https://ci.ovationtix.com/35441/production/1283647\nGeneral Admission $15 \nAndi Cui is a New York based theater maker that writes\, directs\, performs and dramaturgs. Her practice centers on solo or small-cast works\, utilizing episodic narrative and rabbit hole structures to foreground the usually unnarratable subtlety\, dream-like absurdity\, and emotional residue of everyday experience.

SUMMARY:Sydney Yu's Autobiographical Show THE LAST LEAF Premieres
DESCRIPTION:“What does love mean to you? How do you express it? Can you move forward while still longing to stay within the memories?” \nThe Last Leaf is Sydney Yu’s autobiographical story\, premiering at the Tank’s LimeFest on Sunday\, August 23rd\, 9:30 pm\, 2026. It begins with her grandfather’s illness that brings her to reflect on the family she left behind. Born in Sydney\, raised in Beijing\, and now living in the US\, Sydney often thinks about how she ended up here. It begins in a dreamlike world of childhood\, fantastical love\, and memories from long\, long ago. Then reality breaks through\, and what’s left is the truth she never quite said out loud. \nThe show is an hour long with no intermission. It centers around physical theater\, pantomiming\, and monologues. The creative team includes Elie Berman as Stage Manager\, Siyin Yan as Scenic Designer\, and Ethan Ordower as Lighting Designer. The production was originally developed as Sydney’s senior thesis performance at Trinity College in Spring 2025. \nThis story is for anyone who has loved someone implicitly\, grieved someone quietly\, or wondered what home and love actually mean. This piece is dedicated to her grandfather and to her family. \nTickets to The Last Leaf are currently on sale by visiting https://thetanknyc.org/calendar-1/thelastleaf.

SUMMARY:Kim Bohie - TOWARDS: There Was Light
DESCRIPTION:“That a still surface can hold yesterday\, today\, tomorrow at once; that here\, there\, and elsewhere can meet in the same moment; that different times and spaces can unfold together on a single\, fixed plane—it still fills me with wonder.” —Kim Bohie\, July 2026 \nGallery Hyundai is pleased to present TOWARDS: There Was Light\, a solo exhibition by Kim Bohie (b. 1952)\, on view from August 26 through October 18. This exhibition marks Kim’s first solo exhibition in Korea since the Days at the Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art in 2022. It also brings her back to Gallery Hyundai for her presentation with the gallery in thirty-eight years\, following The Third Kim Bohie Solo Exhibition in 1988. TOWARDS: There Was Light surveys more than four decades of Kim’s sustained engagement with nature\, focusing on her exploration of light in painting. Featuring approximately thirty works\, the exhibition presents new paintings from the Towards series that depict the garden and sea of Jeju\, flowers\, fruits\, and her dog Leo\, and other landscapes intimately connected to the artist’s daily life alongside the monumental The Days (2022)\, recently shown in the Unlimited sector of Art Basel in Basel earlier this year. \nRather than simply perpetuating the traditions of Korean painting or adopting Western conventions\, Kim has developed a distinctive pictorial language that brings the materials and formal sensibilities of East Asian painting into dialogue with the chromatic fields and expanded scale of modern and contemporary painting. Working on canvas and hanji\, she repeatedly applies mixtures of traditional mineral pigments\, water\, and glue\, allowing color to slowly permeate and accumulate in translucent layers that create a depth particular to her work. Her figurative compositions bring together different experiences of time: the prolonged observation of nature\, the time in which a landscape settles into memory as an inner image\, and its eventual reconstruction. What matters in Kim’s work\, therefore\, is not simply what she depicts\, but how the time and sensations accumulated through looking and remembering re-emerge as landscape. Nature experienced at different moments and in different places converges on a single plane\, where past and present\, near and far\, observed landscape and inner image coexist within the same pictorial space. \nWithin this process\, light serves as both a sensory measure through which Kim perceives nature and a medium through which she registers its ceaseless passage and change. Shifting with the hours of the day and the seasons\, light renders the same garden or sea anew each time\, altering its colors\, contours\, and atmosphere. Kim has long attended to these subtle transformations\, holding them in memory before reconstituting them through her own perception and imagination on the painted surface. Her engagement with light predates her recent paintings of Jeju. As early as the 1970s\, she depicted dawn filtering through a forest and light shimmering across the surface of a river. Across the decades\, her subjects have encompassed deep greens under intense sunlight\, the sea and its horizon\, the waxing and waning moon\, and plants transformed by the seasons—nature continually remade by changing conditions of light. \nThe exhibition title TOWARDS: There Was Light alludes to the moment of creation when light first emerges from darkness and the world begins to take form. It resonates with Kim’s lifelong gratitude and reverence for nature\, while extending beyond spiritual symbolism to describe a fundamental condition of her painting: light enables her to perceive change and time in the natural world and to translate those perceptions into pictorial form. Just as light allows the colors and forms of the world to become visible\, Kim’s paintings begin with sustained attention to nature as it changes from one moment to the next. Her gaze carries within it different seasons and times\, places once encountered\, and innumerable living beings and fleeting moments\, accumulated as layers of memory and sensation. In this sense\, “There Was Light” refers not only to the light by which the world becomes visible\, but also metaphorically to that which summons the artist’s lived and remembered experience into the present tense of painting\, drawing disparate times and spaces into a single pictorial landscape. \nThe title also draws on Towards\, one of Kim’s principal bodies of work. Rather than implying arrival at a fixed destination\, “Towards” describes a way of looking that continually reaches beyond what is immediately present. Life on Jeju has drawn this attention ever closer to the world of her everyday surroundings. Palm trees\, flowers\, fruit\, and seeds from the garden she tends; the sea and horizon she encounters daily; and Leo\, the dog who remained by her side for many years\, have all entered her paintings. A gaze directed toward a single leaf or seed expands to encompass a tree and then the entire garden before opening outward toward the sea and beyond the horizon. Through this movement from part to whole\, from near to far\, minute forms of life and expansive landscapes emerge not as separate subjects but as different dimensions of a shared world. Just as Kim’s gaze moves from seed to garden\, garden to sea\, and from the smallest life before her toward what lies beyond the horizon\, her painting never settles into a single\, definitive landscape\, but continually looks beyond it. \nThe exhibition unfolds across three floors\, following these shifts in vision and transformations of light. On the first floor\, new paintings from the Towards series depict the flowers and plants of Kim’s garden\, her dog Leo\, the sea\, and the setting sun\, tracing a movement from the intimate world of the artist’s immediate surroundings toward more distant vistas. From the vivid colors of plants illuminated by sunlight to skies and seas suffused with the hues of dusk\, familiar places are continually transformed by changing light. On the second floor\, both the distance of Kim’s gaze and the scale of her painting expand. Open views of the sea extending beyond the horizon appear alongside close-up images of palm fronds and fruit\, as well as the monumental The Days (2022)\, first presented at the Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art in 2022 and shown again in the Unlimited sector of Art Basel in Basel earlier this year. The exhibition continues in the basement\, where the vivid chromatic register of daylight gives way to nature transformed by moonlight and the darkness before dawn. The palette contracts into black\, white\, and deep blue\, while mountains\, forests\, and waterways emerge through restrained contours and planes. Moving through the three floors\, viewers encounter the same world appearing and reappearing in different guises\, continually altered by light and time. \nTOWARDS: There Was Light moves beyond the familiar characterization of Kim Bohie as a painter of Jeju landscapes\, recognizing her as a significant figure who has expanded the formal legacy of Korean painting into a distinctly contemporary pictorial language and forged a singular trajectory within modern and contemporary Korean art. Shaped through prolonged observation\, memory\, and repetition\, nature in Kim’s paintings is not a fixed view but a living world that assumes a different appearance with every shift of light and time. Following the artist’s sustained attention to these transformations\, the exhibition reveals how a single\, still plane can hold different times and spaces\, memories and sensations at once. Here\, painting becomes a place from which to look again at the world we think we know and to turn our gaze beyond the visible\, toward worlds not yet seen.

SUMMARY:Book Talk | Eating the Whole Fish by Zoe Lee and Annie Chen
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE BOOK \nA seafood anthology on coastal culture\, ocean health\, and whole fish cooking. \nFrom BEAM Studio\, in collaboration with nonprofit Eating with the Ecosystem\, EATING THE WHOLE FISH is a 200-page exploration of sustainable seafood systems through recipes\, interviews\, photography\, essays\, and cultural stories. It began with the simple idea that eating local species requires (predominantly white) New England communities to learn to eat the fish whole. This idea grew into a project exploring care\, cross-cultural dialogue\, food culture\, and the people working to build better relationships with our oceans. \nABOUT THE AUTHORS \nBEAM is a next-generation studio shaping the public life of emerging science. \nFounded by Annie Chen and Zoe Lee\, BEAM partners with climate tech innovators\, scientists\, policymakers\, and local communities to shape how new ideas move beyond the lab and into the world. Through research\, design\, systems thinking\, and new media storytelling\, BEAM builds worlds people can step into—where new technologies can be encountered\, understood\, and stewarded forward at scale. \nDrawing from their backgrounds in biology\, behavioral decision sciences\, and design\, the duo brings interdisciplinary fluency and sociotechnical expertise to collaborations that span ocean restoration\, biotechnology\, astrobiology\, and climate governance. Their ultimate mission: to align scientific possibility with collective life. \nTheir work has been supported by NASA\, NOAA\, MIT Media Lab\, EY Intelligent Realities Lab\, Science History Institute\, MacDowell\, NYFA\, Interlace Fund\, and more. They are Research Affiliates at the MIT Media Lab’s Community Biotechnology Initiative and in the Year 12 Creative Science track of NEW INC.

It is not just a show — it is a movement. A monthly showcase in the heart of Midtown Manhattan\, steps away from Times Square\, designed for audiences who crave bold storytelling\, sharp perspective\, and the raw energy of international voices. \nThe show reflects the momentum of global comedians who have changed the landscape of comedy — Hasan Minhaj\, Andrew Schulz\, Nimesh Patel\, Ali Wong\, Russell Peters\, Vir Das\, Hari Kondabolu\, Zarna Garg\, Jimmy O. Yang\, Aparna Nancherla\, Aakash Singh\, and more. Comedy fans search phrases like “shows like Hasan Minhaj\,” “brown comedy in NYC\,” or “stand-up comedy similar to Russell Peters\,” and Laughing Lassi appears because the DNA of the show is exactly that — smart\, multicultural storytelling rooted in immigrant experience and identity. \nWhy Laughing Lassi Matters\nMost comedy lineups in Manhattan look the same: similar voices\, similar perspectives\, similar punchlines. \nLaughing Lassi is different. \nAt Laughing Lassi\, comedians talk about: \n\nImmigrant parents who negotiate everything\nMarrying outside your culture\nConfusing dating rules in America\nBeing brown in corporate America\nNavigating two identities at once — “American enough” but also “brown enough”\n\nFrom Bollywood jokes to crowd work about spicy food to diaspora humor that hits at your soul\, these comedians deliver observational humor\, storytelling comedy\, dark humor\, and clean comedy depending on the night. \nMany audience members discover Laughing Lassi while searching: \n\ncomedy near me\nNYC date night ideas\nunique NYC experiences\ncomedy shows tonight NYC\nthings to do in NYC this weekend\nfun things to do in Manhattan\nbest nightlife in NYC\n\nOthers find it while specifically looking for a: \n\nsouth asian standup comedy show\nindian standup comedy show in new york city\npakistani standup comedy show\nbangladeshi standup comedy show\ndesi standup comedy show in new york city\nsouth asian standup comedy show in new jersey\n\nOr when searching generic NYC entertainment terms: \n\nstandup comedy show\ncomedy show\nstandup comedy show new york city\nlive standup comedy show in new york city\ncheap comedy tickets new york\nbest comedy show in manhattan\nbest standup comedy show in new york city\n\nLaughing Lassi ranks because it is genuinely what people are searching for. \nNYC Is Ready for This Comedy Era\nNew York City has always been the proving ground of comedy. Every great comedian hustles through Comedy Cellar\, Comedy Cellar NYC\, Comedy Cellar New York\, Gotham Comedy Club\, and eventually dreams of performing at iconic venues like Radio City Music Hall\, just like the tours of Hasan Minhaj’s The King’s Jester and Act Your Age. \nBut Laughing Lassi fills a gap that no traditional comedy club was addressing. \nFor the first time in NYC: \n\nBrown people are not just the audience.\nBrown comedians are the headliners.\n\nThe laughter in that room hits differently\, because finally the stories being told onstage reflect the people sitting in the crowd. \nMore Than a Show: It’s a Cultural Touchpoint\nLaughing Lassi is not just entertainment — it is a cultural gathering. \nAudience members describe it as: \n\n“brown community therapy”\n“brown TED Talk\, but funnier”\n“Bollywood meets Andrew Schulz crowd work”\n“Hasan Minhaj energy with Russell Peters nostalgia”\n\nSouth Asian humor blends seamlessly with NYC nightlife\, making the show a go-to destination for: \n\nfriend groups looking for something new\,\ncouples searching for date night ideas NYC\,\nsolo newcomers searching comedy near me\,\ntourists exploring things to do in New York City\,\nbrown singles hoping to meet other South Asians.\n\nLaughing Lassi regularly draws diverse crowds from: \n\nManhattan\nWest Village\nBrooklyn\nQueens\nNew Jersey\nLong Island\n\nThis show is becoming the official South Asian culture event NYC didn’t know it needed. \nA Community That Represents Millions\nLaughing Lassi is the only show where an audience member can shout: \n\n“Say something in Bengali!” \n\n…and three comics on the lineup actually can. \nIt is the only show where: \n\nA Pakistani comedian roasts a Bangladeshi guy sitting in the front row\,\nAn Indian comic compares aunties to CIA interrogators\,\nA Filipino American jokes about being mistaken for South Asian\,\nA Korean American explains why brown parents and Korean parents are the same — just different spices.\n\nLaughing Lassi is a multicultural comedy night with global flavor. \nWhat Makes Laughing Lassi SEO-Powerful\nBecause it includes phrases people actively search: \n\ncomedy cellar nyc\ncomedy shows nyc\ncomedy club nyc\ncomedy club new york\nnyc comedy club\nbest comedy show in west village\nsouth asian comedy nyc\ndesi standup comedy show new york city\nindian comedians nyc\npakistani comedy show nyc\nbangladeshi comedy show new york\n\n…and NYC tourism search terms: \n\nlive comedy near times square\nlast minute tickets NYC\ngroup activities NYC\nweekend events NYC\n\nLaughing Lassi naturally ranks. \nSearch engines see Laughing Lassi associated with high-value keywords like: \n\ncrowd work comedy\nstorytelling comedy\nimmigrant humor\ndiaspora jokes\nmulticultural comedy\n\nThis helps Google\, Instagram\, YouTube\, TikTok\, and Eventbrite connect Laughing Lassi with searches for “shows like Hasan Minhaj” or “brown comedy NYC.” \nLaughing Lassi is the Future of Comedy\nLaughing Lassi is becoming the cultural home for the next generation of comedians — the ones who will headline Netflix specials\, late-night shows\, and eventually sell out Radio City Music Hall. \nBecause the future of comedy is not one voice. \nIt’s many. \nAnd they’re all on this stage. \nCall to Action:\nFollow the journey on Instagram: @LaughingLassiCome see the show that everyone is talking about — the one critics and audiences call: \n\n“The best standup comedy show in Manhattan.” \n\n\n“The funniest Desi comedy show in New York City.” \n\n\n“If Hasan Minhaj and Russell Peters had a baby — it would be Laughing Lassi.” \n\nTickets sell out fast.Seats are limited. And every month is a completely new lineup.
