SUMMARY:New York Asian Film Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:This year’s program features more than 50 filmmakers\, ranging from acclaimed veterans to exciting new voices\, who will be on hand for post-screening Q&As and special appearances\, giving audiences an insider’s look into the stories behind their work. \nTickets will go on sale on Thursday\, June 18 at 2pm\, with an early access period for FLC and NYAFF Members starting on Thursday\, June 18 at noon. \nComplete lineup to be announced soon! Sign up for updates. \nTwenty-five years ago\, the New York Asian Film Festival started by screening the most exciting new films from Hong Kong\, Korea\, and Japan. A quarter century on\, Film at Lincoln Center (FLC) and the New York Asian Film Foundation announce the first highlights of the 25th New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF)\, a landmark anniversary edition celebrating 25 years of championing the filmmakers\, stars\, and cinematic movements that have shaped the future of Asian cinema. Running from July 10 to July 26 across five New York venues\, including Film at Lincoln Center\, SVA Theatre\, IFC Center\, Anthology Film Archives\, and the Korean Cultural Center New York\, NYAFF 2026 marks a major milestone for North America’s leading festival of Asian cinema. Screenings at FLC take place July 10–23\, and two venues are homecomings: Anthology Film Archives (where the festival began in 2002) on July 16–18\, and IFC Center (the festival’s home for four formative editions) on July 13\, 15\, 16\, and 22. \n“We are proud to support the 25th edition of the New York Asian Film Festival\, and uplift the stories of Asian communities in NYC and beyond\,” said Commissioner Rafael Espinal of the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment. “Festivals like NYAFF are an extremely vital part of the city’s filmmaking and entertainment ecosystem\, and create platforms and opportunities to expose New Yorkers to new and diverse storytelling.” \nOpening Night on July 10 at FLC will feature the North American premiere of Yeon Sang-ho’s Colony\, the highly anticipated Korean box-office sensation fresh from its world premiere in Cannes’ Midnight Screenings program—the same section that launched Train to Busan 10 years ago. Already the fastest Korean hit of the year\, the film locks its survivors inside a central Seoul high-rise while a virus tears through the floors quicker than anyone can say “zombie.” Jun Ji-hyun (Gianna Jun) plays the biotech professor who turns reluctant hero\, alongside Ji Chang-wook\, Koo Kyo-hwan\, and Shin Hyun-been. Yeon Sang-ho will be in person on Opening Night ahead of the film’s August 28 theatrical release. \nColony arrives after Korean cinema’s strongest box-office rebound since the pandemic. NYAFF is planning a special presentation of the year’s other biggest hit: The King’s Warden\, now the highest-grossing Korean film of all time\, starring Yoo Hae-jin (Exhuma) and Park Ji-hoon. One film broke the all-time record. The other got to the top faster than anything else this year. Both are at the 25th edition of NYAFF. \nFollowing Colony’s premiere on July 10\, the Opening Night Market returns to the Frieda and Roy Furman Gallery at Film at Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater for an annual gathering of the NYAFF community with live music and Asian street food. \nThe festival is presented with major support from the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York (HKETONY)\, The Ministry of Culture of Thailand and the Department of Cultural Promotion\, Fundstrat Global Advisors\, BitMine\, Cathay Pacific\, Taipei Cultural Center of TECO in New York\, Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY)\, and Korean Film Council (KOFIC) whose partnership amplifies Asian cinema’s most vital voices. \nLearn more here.

SUMMARY:Transcendence
DESCRIPTION:Fou Gallery is pleased to present Transcendence\, a group exhibition featuring Tianshu Zhang (张天舒)\, Tao Xian(陶显)\, and Gloria Fan Duan(樊段晓春)\, on view from July 11 through September 5\, 2026. \nAs in the philosophy of the I-Ching [易经]\, the world is not an empty abstraction\, but a living structure of patterns through which all things transform. At a moment when attention is increasingly pulled outward by speed\, image\, and instability\, Transcendence turns inward\, inviting viewers to explore within for the subtle flow of energy that connects body\, mind\, and the natural world. \nBringing together painting and sculpture\, the exhibition considers abstraction not as a rejection of form\, but as a way of approaching what cannot be fully represented: spirit\, dream\, memory\, and the quiet forces that shape both human and natural existence. Through bodies\, imagined organisms\, and reconstructed botanical forms\, Transcendence explores the traces of inner energy moving between consciousness and the unconscious\, creating a path for viewers to enter a realm of inner light\, meditation\, and spiritual perception. \nFor Tianshu Zhang\, painting emerges from the threshold between dream and embodiment. Drawing inspiration from the imperceptible yet constant flow of Qi\, her paintings seek a balance between silhouette-like structures and fluid movement. Through layered brushwork\, Zhang evokes the body in abstraction\, where flesh\, spine\, and inner currents appear only partially\, as if sensing the presence of energy moving within. The body becomes a vessel through which consciousness moves between memory\, desire\, vulnerability\, and transformation. \nTao Xian approaches this spiritual interiority through the imagined life of nature. Drawing from Daoist thought\, Jungian psychology\, and organic forms\, she creates luminous semi-abstract paintings that occupy a space between organism and inner landscape. In works inspired by deep-sea plants and imagined botanical forms\, Tao allows imagination to become a mode of perception\, suggesting a silent energy shared between the individual soul and the larger universe. The visible traces of nature become vessels for psychic and spiritual life\, where the boundary between self and world remains fluid. \nGloria Fan Duan extends the exhibition’s inquiry into nature\, perception\, and unseen forces through a practice situated at the intersection of art\, science\, and technology. Conceived during NARS Foundation (Brooklyn\, New York)\, An And Foundation (Wassaic\, New York) and Fou Gallery’s Tulum Residency (Mexico)\, the series presented in this exhibition combines cast resin and glass flowers\, leaves\, and stems with handmade vessels\, assembling them into sculptural installations inspired by Japanese ikebana. Through mediation\, preservation\, and deliberate arrangement\, Duan reconstructs nature in translucent botanical forms that hover between specimen and offering\, garden and laboratory\, occupying a threshold between existence and non-existence. No longer living plants yet still carrying the trace of organic life\, these works offer a material counterpart to Zhang’s bodily energies and Tao’s imagined spiritual organisms. The processes of preservation\, reproduction\, and arrangement become forms of meditation\, suggesting that the artificial may also serve as a vessel for care\, ecological memory\, and spiritual attention. \nThrough the body\, the imagined organism\, and the reconstructed garden\, form becomes a threshold through which inner energy\, memory\, and spiritual perception may appear. Rather than presenting transcendence as escape\, the exhibition understands it as a process of attunement\, a way of sensing what exists beneath the visible. Installed as a quiet and immersive environment\, Transcendence invites viewers to move through the works as they might move through a breath cycle\, a dream\, or a moment of meditation\, entering a space where the visible world opens onto its unseen dimensions. In this suspended space\, transcendence becomes a quiet practice of returning to the energies that bind the self to the world.

SUMMARY:From ABGs to “Wasian” TikTok: How Asian Identity Became an Aesthetic
DESCRIPTION:From ABGs to “Wasian” TikTok: How Asian Identity Became an Aesthetic \nThis engaging conversation explores how pop culture\, social media\, beauty trends\, and dating discourse have shaped how Asian identity is perceived\, performed\, and consumed online. \nAuthors Kaila Yu and Joan King will examine the rise of labels and aesthetics such as ABG culture\, “boba liberal” identity\, K-pop beauty ideals\, and “Wasian” TikTok\, asking what happens when a community’s identity becomes a trend. SUMMARY:Awakening Lion + Yingge Dance 南国醒狮 x 英歌
DESCRIPTION:As part of the opening day’s festivities for Lincoln Center’s Chinese Arts Week\, we present a performance of the millennia-old south China theater procession known as Xing Shi or the Awakening Lion (南国醒狮). The charismatic Awakening Lion hails originally from Guangdong\, which is also the home of Yingge dance (英歌)\, a highly stylized and energetic folk dance that merges Chinese opera acrobatics\, costuming and make-up with characters from classical novels such as White Snake and Water Margin. Both of these traditional arts will leap to life on The Dance Floor with the Awakening Lion Dance presented by Zhao Family Lion Dance Company\, a UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage carrier\, accompanied by the gravity-defying Fumei Youth Yingge Team from the town of Puning in Guangdong.

SUMMARY:CARE & CONNECT: Understanding & Recognizing Cultural Trauma
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Chinese in America is proud to partner with Connect/Hamilton Madison House to present a series of public programs focused on mental wellness: Care & Connect. This series aims to provide accessible resources while creating a space for open conversation\, helping to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health support. \nJoin us for our second Care & CONNECT event\, Understanding & Recognizing Cultural Trauma\, a workshop led by Hamilton Madison House’s Dr. Jihan Ryu and Dr. Kristin Kim-Martin.\n\nDr. Kim-Martin is a psychologist whose research centers on cultural trauma and the immigration experience. Her dissertation explored how immigration shapes the help-seeking behaviors of second-generation Korean Americans. Dr. Jihan Ryu is CONNECT’s primary psychiatrist\, providing trauma-informed\, culturally competent care in our Lower East Side community.\n\nOpen to community members and mental health professionals alike\, this workshop offers an accessible entry point into what we mean by “cultural trauma” and an opportunity to reflect on how our own experiences may be shaped by it — as well as tools for connecting with others across similar and different cultures in ways that honor our histories\, traumas\, and varied cultural norms.\n\nWe will explore how trauma translates across generations\, drawing on historical events and the communities they impacted — including the Korean War\, American slavery\, the Ukrainian Holodomor\, and the Chinese Cultural Revolution. And making full use of our venue\, the workshop will engage directly with MOCA’s permanent exhibition.\n\nFree Admission | Registration Required

For a century\, China Institute of America has been dedicated to deepening the world’s understanding of China.

SUMMARY:Anna May Wong Double Feature: Shanghai Express & Daughter of Shanghai
DESCRIPTION:A rare screening of two Anna May Wong films on the rooftop of Ornithology Jazz Club.\n\n\nAnna May Wong\, considered Hollywood’s first Asian American film star\, had a groundbreaking career that spanned five decades and nearly every medium\, from silent films\, talkies\, and television to radio\, theatre\, and vaudeville. In response to the racism and sexism she faced as a Chinese American woman\, Wong continually reinvented herself on-screen\, often with spectacular results. \nShanghai Express (1932) and Daughter of Shanghai (1937) are perhaps two of the most important films she made in Hollywood during the 1930s. Join this double feature with author Katie Gee Salisbury\, one of Wong’s biographers\, who will introduce each film and answer questions following each screening with a brief intermission in between. Copies of her book\, Not Your China Doll: The Wild and Shimmering Life of Anna May Wong\, will also be available for sale. \nTickets are nonrefundable. Price includes admission to both film screenings and the cover for Ornithology’s jazz club. Cocktails will be available for purchase at the bar downstairs. \nSchedule \n8:00 pm – Doors open\n8:30 pm – Host Introduction + Shanghai Express\n10:00 pm – Intermission\n10:15 pm – Host Introduction + Daughter of Shanghai \nAbout the Films \nShanghai Express (122 mins)\, an entertaining ensemble piece\, follows a group of foreigners\, each with something to hide (including two women of ill repute)\, traveling by train from Peiping to Shanghai. When the train makes an unexpected stop in the middle of the night\, the first-class passengers are thrust into an unforeseen drama and find themselves collectively at the mercy of a dangerous Chinese revolutionary. Directed by Josef von Sternberg\, Marlene Dietrich stars as Shanghai Lily\, with a show-stopping supporting performance from Anna May Wong as Hui Fei. \nDaughter of Shanghai (62 mins) is based on a story supposedly ripped from the headlines about a human-trafficking ring smuggling undocumented immigrants into the U.S. When Lan Ying Lin (Anna May Wong) and her father accidentally discover the culprits\, her father is murdered and Lan Ying vows to avenge his death by exposing the crime syndicate behind the operation. Government agent Kim Lee (Philip Ahn) works in tandem with Lan Ying to catch the syndicate and at the same time falls in love with her. Directed by Robert Florey and written specifically as a starring vehicle for Wong\, the film established Wong and Ahn as the first Asian American actors to play a leading romantic couple in the sound era.
