Zorah Sharaf brought shame upon her family. What’s the truth? Depends on who you ask. \nThe Sharaf family is the picture of success. Prosperous\, rich\, happy. They came to this country as refugees with nothing more than the clothes on their backs. And now\, after years of hard work\, they live in the most exclusive neighborhood\, their growing family attending the most prestigious schools. Zorah\, the eldest daughter\, is the apple of her father’s eye. \nWhen an unthinkable tragedy strikes\, everyone is left reeling and the family is thrust into the court of public opinion. There is talk that behind closed doors the Sharafs’ happy household was anything but. Did the Sharaf family achieve the American dream? Or was the image of the model immigrant family just a façade? \nLike a literary game of ping-pong\, Good People compels the reader to reconsider what might have happened even on the previous page. Told through a kaleidoscope of perspectives\, it is a riveting\, provocative\, and haunting story of family—sisters\, brothers\, mothers\, fathers\, and the communities that claim us as family in difficult times. \n  \nPatmeena Sabit was born in Kabul a few years after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. When she was a month old\, her family fled the conflict and became refugees in Pakistan\, joining the millions of other Afghans that had sought refuge there. They later moved to the United States and she grew up in Virginia. She currently lives in Toronto. \n  \nPrachi Gupta is an award-winning journalist and former senior reporter at Jezebel. They Called Us Exceptional was longlisted for a PEN/Open Book Award. She won a Writers Guild Award for her investigative essay “Stories About My Brother.” Her work was featured in The Best American Magazine Writing 2021 and has appeared in The Atlantic\, The Washington Post Magazine\, Marie Claire\, Salon\, Elle\, and elsewhere. She lives in New York City.

SUMMARY:Book: David Glasgow and Kenji Yoshino in Conversation with Deborah Archer: How Equality Wins (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Renowned legal experts David Glasgow and Kenji Yoshino (Say the Right Thing) join us for an online conversation with ACLU president Deborah Archer about reimagining the work of diversity\, equity\, and inclusion (DEI) in a divided nation — and their new book\, How Equality Wins: A New Vision for an Inclusive America. \nWhat went wrong with DEI? Facing a relentless political\, legal\, and cultural attack for DEI programs\, corporations and universities are abandoning the DEI programs they previously championed\, and the playbook Americans once had for advancing equality no longer seems viable. In How Equality Wins\, David Glasgow and Kenji Yoshino unpack where DEI went wrong\, offering a roadmap to rebuild equality for the new era. Drawing on peerless legal expertise and extensive experience advising leaders in corporate America\, academia\, and the non-profit sector\, Yoshino and Glasgow share tangible strategies to put this nation back on a more inclusive path. \nIn a special online conversation\, hear Glasgow\, Yoshino and Archer discuss how politicians\, cultural institutions\, and everyday Americans can fight for equality and win: fostering free speech and dissent\, reclaiming the concept of merit\, and helping to ensure that the work of equality can overcome the backlash and emerge stronger on the other side.

SUMMARY:Meet William Pao\, Author of Breakthrough & Dr. Harold Varmus Nobel Laureate
DESCRIPTION:Meet the doctors\, scientists and patients patients fighting the world’s worst diseases\nCharting the discovery of eight revolutionary drugs\,\n\n\nMeet the doctors\, scientists and patients patients fighting the world’s worst diseases \n‘A must read.’ Siddhartha Mukherjee\, bestselling author of The Emperor of All Maladies \nWhat does it take to create a new medicine? The trajectory from laboratory to your neighbourhood pharmacy rarely runs smooth. Drug hunting demands radical leaps of imagination\, the expertise of many… and a hefty dollop of luck. Unsurprisingly\, ‘eureka’ moments come few and far between – but\, when they do\, they change lives. \nCharting the discovery of eight revolutionary drugs\, Dr William Pao cuts to the innovative heart of biomedical research and celebrates the tireless work of the scientists\, doctors\, patients and families fighting for better medical care. For each of these medicines\, whether a potentially life-saving new treatment for cancer\, or something as commonplace as paracetamol\, there stands a cast of characters and a wealth of stories. Documenting these fascinating journeys\, Breakthrough grants a privileged\, behind-the-scenes look at the medicines that improve – and very often save – our lives. \nForeword by Nobel Prize-Winner Harold Varmus

SUMMARY:MOCA TALKS with Heather Guo: Cheongsam as Modern Icon
DESCRIPTION:A New York Fashion Week talk on the cheongsam with curator Heather Guo\, tracing identity and women’s stories across generations.\n\n\n$10 General Admission | $5 Student & Senior | Free for MOCA Members \nPresented during New York Fashion Week\, the Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) invites you to an evening exploring the cheongsam\, also known as the qipao\, as a powerful symbol of modernity\, femininity\, and cultural exchange. Fashion curator and designer Heather Guo will trace how this iconic garment evolved during a period of profound social\, political\, and aesthetic transformation\, as Chinese women navigated new ideas of identity\, cosmopolitanism\, and self expression at home and abroad. \nDrawing from MOCA’s extensive cheongsam collections\, the program will feature select highlights on temporary display from four personal collections belonging to Phoebe Chen\, Chang Yu-I\, Chao Huai Tung\, and Aileen Pei. Together\, Guo and Yue Ma\, MOCA’s Director of Collections and Research Center\, will examine how cheongsams reveal a dynamic dialogue between East and West from the early twentieth century to the present day. These women\, trailblazing in their own fields with grace and agency\, offer deeply personal entry points into the history of the cheongsam. The talk will trace their individual journeys through the lens of dress\, revealing how the cheongsam has accompanied lives shaped by migration\, ambition\, resilience\, and self definition. \nThe program will also discover how motifs such as the plum blossom and ruyi cloud carry layered cultural meanings\, while Western techniques and accessories reshaped the cheongsam into a distinctly modern form. Through close looking and contextual storytelling\, Guo invites audiences to reconsider the cheongsam not as a static traditional dress\, but as a living archive of cultural adaptation\, feminine agency\, and transnational style. This program offers an engaging opportunity to connect fashion history\, material culture\, and Chinese American narratives\, bridging the past with contemporary conversations about heritage\, design\, and identity. \nAbout Heather Guo \nHeather Guo is a Shanghai-born fashion curator and designer currently based in New York City. Her work centers on the preservation\, study\, and contemporary reinterpretation of traditional Chinese fashion\, with particular emphasis on the 20th-century cheongsam (also known as the qipao). After relocating to the United States during her secondary education\, Heather pursued academic training in Classics and Art History at New York University. During her undergraduate studies\, she developed a sustained scholarly and curatorial interest in Chinese historical fashion\, forming a substantial collection of vintage cheongsams. In 2023\, she founded Hoeng Gong Silk Co.\, a Shanghai-based brand dedicated to the research\, design\, and production of garments inspired by 20th-century Chinese styles. The project encompasses the curation of vintage cheongsams and the design of ready-to-wear and custom pieces that draw on traditional craftsmanship while engaging with modern aesthetics. Through her work\, Heather aims to bridge cultural heritage and contemporary style\, celebrating the artistry and history of Chinese fashion. \n\n\n\nNot a MOCA member yet? SUMMARY:The New McCarthyism: Why Authoritarians Fear Storytellers
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, 2/11 at 7pm ET for a virtual Under the Blacklight broadcast of our acclaimed 2026 The Story of Us event!\n\n\nOn the first day of this year’s Sundance Film Festival\, the African American Policy Forum (AAPF) hosted the latest iteration of ourThe Story of Us series\, “The New McCarthyism: Why Authoritarians Fear Storytellers\,” moderated by Kimberlé Crenshaw\, co-founder and executive director of AAPF\, featuring Academy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay; Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Sympathizer Viet Thanh Nguyen; and former President of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and Cinema and Media Studies professor Jacqueline Stewart. \nWe explored the McCarthy era’s roots in anti-Black racism and the connections between racism and authoritarianism\, as well as outlined our highest aspirations for a more creative\, free and inclusive future in the arts. Our event featured powerful artivism performances by two-time Tony Award-winning actor Kara Young (Purlie Victorious\, Purpose) and Tony-nominated actor Jon Michael Hill (Purpose\, Elementary\, Detroit 1-8-7\, A Man in Full)\, directed by Associate Professor of Theatre and Africana Studies at Oberlin College\, Justin Emeka. \nCinematic storytelling has long been a battleground upon which competing visions of a more inclusive democracy play out in Hollywood—a battle disproportionately impacting Black artists. In 2025\, the fight over representation and the arts escalated dramatically\, with the defunding of public art and media\, high-profile attacks on late-night comedians and the erosion of democratic norms that once upheld the freedoms of speech and expression. \nIf you couldn’t attend the event in-person\, you’re in luck: On Wednesday\, February 11th\, AAPF will host a virtual broadcast of the event and a live talkback featuring Justin Emeka\, Kara Young and Jon Michael Hill for supporters far and wide to see! \nRSVP early to save your spot for this unforgettable experience!

SUMMARY:This Was Funnier in China: Stand-Up Comedy in China with Jesse Appell
DESCRIPTION:Jesse Appell and This Was Funnier in China book cover \nJoin us for an evening of laughter\, storytelling\, and cultural insights with bilingual comedian and author Jesse Appell\, to celebrate the launch of his new book\, This Was Funnier in China. As part of his book tour\, he brings his new English-language comedy show\, This Show Was Funnier in China\, to Asia Society. The show blends humor with personal stories from his life as a Chinese comedian’s apprentice\, along with selected readings from the book. \nHis journey began with a Fulbright Fellowship to Beijing\, where he apprenticed under Master Ding Guangquan to learn the traditional Chinese comedy art of Xiangsheng (相声) — a traditional Chinese comedic art form known for its witty dialogue\, wordplay\, and rapid-fire banter between performers. Often compared to Western stand-up or sketch comedy\, Xiangsheng has been a cornerstone of Chinese humor for centuries. Over the next decade\, Jesse became a key figure in China’s modern comedy scene\, appearing on popular TV shows like Huan Le Xiju Ren (欢乐 喜剧人) and creating viral content that has garnered over 500 million views worldwide. \nFollowing the show\, stay for an engaging audience Q&A and discussion about comedy\, culture\, and what it means to find humor across borders. \n$15 Members\, $25 Nonmembers. Students and Seniors: Use coupon SENSTU at check out. \nThis Was Funnier in China will be available for sale during the event\, with a book signing to follow.

SUMMARY:Trans Caribbean: Queer and Trans Arts\, Rights\, and Activism
DESCRIPTION:Co-organized by the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) and The Latinx Project at NYU. Co-sponsored by the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality (CSGS)\, Hemispheric Institute\, Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU\, and the Center for the Study of Africa and the African Diaspora (CSAAD). \nDETAILS & REGISTRATION \nAs trans rights and embodiment are under attack in the United States\, trans activists and legal activists are advancing a broad trans rights agenda across the Caribbean. Colombia’s proposed Ley Integral Trans\, for instance\, aims to protect the rights of transgender and non-binary individuals\, while ensuring their full equality and participation in all areas of society. Meanwhile\, like millions of others\, queer and trans people in the Caribbean have historically lived across and beyond national boundaries. Our invited guests discuss their experiences of advocating for trans rights\, sustaining creative practice\, and convening community while crossing gendered\, legal\, and geographic boundaries. The conversations will be accompanied by two performances that illustrate the complexity of living life across boundaries. \nThe first panel\, focused on the struggle for rights\, recognition\, and equality in Colombia\, stages a conversation between Liga de Salud Trans activists Juli Salamanca Cortés and Yoko Ruiz and their artistic collaborators\, photographer Camila Falquez and author Cesar Vallejo. Moderated by Professor Bel Olid (University of Chicago). \nThe second panel examines the Trans Caribbean through its artistic\, social\, and legal movements through a conversation with advocate and program strategist Dane Lewis\, interdisciplinary artist Edrimael Delgado Reyes (LaBoriVogue)\, installation and performance artist Carlos Martiel\, and Black Trans Liberation activist Qween Jean. Moderated by Professor Leo Douglas (NYU Liberal Studies). This panel threads together experiences that cross Cuba\, Jamaica\, Haiti\, Puerto Rico\, and the United States. \nThe closing reception features performances by poet Suzanne Persard\, poet Darrel Alejandro Holnes\, and artist Edrimael Delgado Reyes. Persard is published in the poetry anthology I Will Not Go: Translations\, Transformations\, and Chutney Fractals (Kaya Press\, 2024)\, and Holnes is published in When Language Broke Open: An Anthology of Queer and Trans Black Writers of Latin American Descent (University of Arizona Press\, 2023). \nAccessibility note: This event is free and open to the public with RSVP. The building has a wheelchair ramp and elevator. For any questions or to notify us of additional accommodation requests\, please email clacs@nyu.edu at least a week prior to the event. \nImage: Samantha Siagama\, Trans-Indigenous Leader. As a 22-year-old in Spring 1968\, he came to the United States with only $8 in his pocket to do graduate studies in Operations Research/Computer Science at Cornell. He built a 39-year career at the global Fortune 500 specialty materials company Rohm and Haas\, where he retired as Chairman and CEO in April 2009. \nOver his career\, he has served as a director at 15 public companies across a wide range of industries\, including Hewlett Packard\, DuPont\, Arconic/Howmet\, Delphi/Aptiv\, Airgas\, Tyco and Avantor. She also led the development of Facebook’s first mobile ad product for apps and its mobile ad network\, in addition to building the company’s games business and its payments platform\, including Facebook Pay. Named by PaymentsSource as one of the most influential women in payments and one of Business Insider’s most powerful female engineers\, Deb has worked in the tech industry for over 18 years. Prior to Facebook\, she spent several years in product roles at PayPal and eBay\, including leading the integration between the two products. \nActively involved with promoting diversity and women in tech\, she is the founder of Women In Product\, a nonprofit to connect and support women in the product management field. SUMMARY:“Archival Interregnum: Caste\, Sexuality\, Indenture\,” A Lecture by Anjali Arondekar
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Comparative Approaches to the Literatures of Africa\, the Middle East\, and the Global South (CALAMEGS) 2025-26 Lecture Series. Co-sponsored by the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU\, NYU Department of Social & Cultural Analysis\, and Center for the Study of Gender & Sexuality at NYU. \nRSVP \nWhile Mauritius remains the place from which my questions emerge\, it is also an area impossible\, a geo-epistemology that confounds histories of sexuality and caste in/and South Asia and the broader Indian Ocean world.  Indenture is the archival interregnum—especially in Mauritius—where our attachments to counter-archives\, origin-stories\, run amuck. If archives of indenture are flooded with markers of identification that suture presence to labor\, what happens to the labor of caste and sexuality that lives unaccounted within economies of such enumeration? How do we think histories of indenture outside settled archival forms\, outside technologies of historical recuperation\, where we historicize not to materialize absence\, but to speak to the weight of our historical anchors? How do we couple the abundance of historical reading with the oceanic voyages of indenture\, caste and sexuality? Caste and sexuality here are not tracked through acts/practices that might return us to identitarian forms; rather I read archival records of caste and sexuality against the settlement and lure of reproductive futurities. \nAnjali Arondekar is Peggy and Jack Baskin Foundation Presidential Professor of Feminist Studies\, University of California\, Santa Cruz. She was the founding director\, Center for South Asian Studies\, 2020-24. Her research engages the comparative poetics and politics of sexuality\, caste\, and historiography\, with a focus on South Asia and the broader Indian Ocean world. She is the author of two award-winning monographs: For the Record: On Sexuality and the Colonial Archive in India (Duke University Press\, 2009\, Orient Blackswan\, India\, 2010); and Abundance: Sexuality’s History (Duke University Press\, 2023\, Orient Blackswan\, 2023). Arondekar’s third book-in progress\, entitled\, Oceanic Sex: Archives of Caste and Indenture\, couples the archival forms of indenture with the oceanic voyages of caste and sexuality. \n  \nAccessibility note: This event is free and open to the public with RSVP. The venue is located on the ground level and is accessible with two sets of automatic doors. For any accommodation requests\, please email amb10317@nyu.edu.
