SUMMARY:Film: The Joy Luck Club with Executive Producer Janet Yang
DESCRIPTION:A special screening of The Joy Luck Club\, followed by a talk with Janet Yang\, one of the executive producers.\n\n\nThe Joy Luck Club (1993) \nDirected by: Wayne Wang\nRuntime: 139 minutes | Rated: R\nCast: Tamlyn Tomita\, Kieu Chinh\, Tsai Chin\, France Nuyen\, Lisa Lu \nBased on Amy Tan’s bestselling novel\, The Joy Luck Club unfolds the stories of four Chinese American women and their immigrant mothers\, weaving together memory and generational experience to reveal the challenges of identity\, love\, sacrifice\, and belonging. Directed by Wayne Wang\, the film was groundbreaking as one of the first major Hollywood productions to center Asian American lives and feature a predominantly Asian cast. More than thirty years later\, it continues to resonate as a touchstone for Asian American representation in cinema. \nEarlier this year\, MOCA proudly presented a screening of Wayne Wang’s Chan Is Missing (1982)\, widely considered the first Asian American feature film to gain national recognition. With this special screening of The Joy Luck Club\, MOCA continues its commitment to preserving and advocating for the legacy of Asian American cinema\, offering audiences an opportunity to revisit and reflect on this landmark work. \nFollowing the screening\, Janet Yang—one of the film’s executive producers and a trailblazing figure in the industry—will join us for a post-screening conversation about the making of the film and its enduring impact on Hollywood and Asian American storytelling. \n  \nBecome A MOCA Member

DESCRIPTION:Discover the untold story of Kang Youwei’s exile and the Chinese Empire Reform Association in North America.\n\n\n$10 General Admission | $5 Student and Senior Admission | Free for MOCA Members \nHow did a reform movement championed by imperial China’s most famous reformer take root across North America\, and what can it tell us about the birth of modern Chinese politics? Join authors and scholars Robert L. Worden and Jane Leung Larson for an in-depth conversation on their new reference work\, A Chinese Reformer in Exile: Kang Youwei and the Chinese Empire Reform Association in North America\, 1899 to 1911 (Brill\, 2025; Open Access PDF and hardcover). \nDrawing on five decades of scholarship and newly uncovered archives\, Worden and Larson trace how Kang Youwei and the Chinese Empire Reform Association (Baohuanghui) built a transnational network of more than 160 chapters across the United States\, Canada\, and Mexico. These chapters founded schools\, newspapers\, women’s associations\, and political pressure campaigns that advanced the goal of transforming China into a constitutional monarchy. The discussion will examine the Association’s on-the-ground organizing tactics\, its role in pivotal moments such as the 1905 anti-American boycott and constitutional petition drives\, and its enduring impact on Chinese diasporic civic life. \nModerated by Evans Chan\, whose films Chinatopia and Datong: The Great Society and the opera Datong: The Chinese Utopia helped revive global interest in Kang Youwei\, this program offers a rare\, richly documented view of a pivotal moment when overseas Chinese reshaped the political imagination of a nation. \nAbout Robert L. Worden \nRobert L. Worden (b. 1945\, Olean\, NY) is a historian specializing in Chinese and Asian affairs. He earned his B.A. in History from St. Bonaventure University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Asian History from Georgetown University. From 1973 to 2007\, he served in the Library of Congress’s Federal Research Division\, producing over 100 analytical studies and co-authoring or editing eight volumes in the Country Studies Series. He later held leadership roles as Acting Chief of the Asian Division and Chief Operating Officer of the Office of Scholarly Programs. Worden is also the author and editor of several books and numerous articles\, and remains active in community service and heritage work. He and his wife\, Norma Chue\, have three children\, twelve grandchildren\, and three great-grandchildren. \nAbout Jane Leung Larson \nJane Leung Larson is an independent scholar based in Goshen\, MA and New York\, NY. A graduate of Reed College (B.A.\, Anthropology\, 1967)\, she has worked in the China field since 1978\, serving as the founding executive director of the Northwest China Council in Portland\, Oregon (1980–95) and later as an editor with China Institute and the Committee of 100 in New York (2000–13). Since 1985\, she has pursued independent research on Kang Youwei and the Baohuanghui\, beginning with the papers of her grandfather\, Tom Leung (Tan Zhangxiao)\, a student of Kang and Baohuanghui leader in Los Angeles. Her work explores the organization’s global evolution\, its role in the 1905 anti-American boycott\, and the constitutional petition movement. She has presented widely in the US\, Canada\, Singapore\, and China\, and in 2010 launched the blog Baohuanghui Scholarship to foster collaboration in the field. \nAbout Evans Chan 陳耀成 \nA critic\, librettist\, and filmmaker\, Evans Chan has directed 15 award-winning films\, including Journey to Beijing (1998)\, Sorceress of the New Piano (2004)\, and Love and Death in Montmartre (2019). His works have been showcased at major film festivals\, such as Berlin\, Rotterdam\, London\, Moscow\, Vancouver\, San Francisco\, and Taiwan’s Golden Horse\, among others. Time Out named Chan’s directorial debut\, To Liv(e) (1991)\, one of the “100 Greatest Hong Kong Films.” Chan’s two films about Kang Youwei —Chinatopia (2011) and Datong: The Great Society (2011) — as well as the opera Datong: The Chinese Utopia (2015)\, for which he wrote the libretto\, have contributed to the revival of interest in the last reformer of imperial China. \nAbout A Chinese Reformer in Exile \nA Chinese Reformer in Exile: Kang Youwei and the Chinese Empire Reform Association in North America\, 1899–1911 (Leiden: Brill\, 2025; Open Access PDF and Hardcover) is an encyclopedic reference work documenting the exile years of imperial China’s most famous reformer\, Kang Youwei\, and his political organization\, in effect China’s first mass political party. With the goal of transforming China’s autocratic empire into a constitutional monarchy\, the Chinese Empire Reform Association network spawned more than 230 chapters on five continents. North America was where Kang’s organizational achievements were most fully realized. Kang\, his disciples\, and local leaders practiced retail politics by organizing 160 chapters in the U.S.\, Canada\, and Mexico\, and associated schools\, newspapers\, military academies\, women’s associations\, businesses\, and political pressure campaigns. Kang’s most potent contribution to the Chinese polity was his success in rousing Chinese at home and abroad to care about their country’s political future and to act together to further their goals in a constructive way. Based on Robert Worden’s 1972 Georgetown University Ph.D. dissertation\, a multinational team of historians contribute new insights from 50 years of additional scholarship and previously unknown archival materials. \n\n\n\nNot a MOCA member yet? SUMMARY:Art on the Move: NYC’s Iconic Subway Murals
DESCRIPTION:Join us with Asian and Asian Diasporic artists on their stories behind their own subway commission projects!\n\n\nChina Institute and Asia Art Archive in America bring together Asian and Asian Diasporic artists Bing Lee\, Jean Shin\, Saya Woolfalk\, and Parker Fay (who will represent Ming Fay) to share the stories behind their own subway commission projects while addressing questions around the possibilities\, promise\, and practicalities of public art. The conversation will be moderated by Deputy Director of MTA Art & Design Yaling Chen. \nNYC’s subway stations have long been sites of large scale commissions\, viewed on a daily basis by hundreds of thousands of city residents\, commuters\, and visitors. These artworks\, commissioned by MTA Art & Design\, are often linked to their location’s history\, architecture\, and/ or community context. \nPlease join us on November 4th for a deep dive into four select commissions and what they can teach us about shared commitment to community\, artistic innovation\, and site-specific storytelling. \nThis program is in conversation with Offering the Spiritual: A Selection Ming Fay’s Public Art Projects\, an archival display featured in the current exhibition Metamorphosis: Chinese Imagination and Transformation. This display\, focusing on select NYC-based public artworks by Ming Fay\, is organized by Asia Art Archive in America. \nImage Credit: “Shad Crossing\, Delancey Orchard” (2004) by Ming Fay at NYCT Delancey St & Essex St Station. Photo: Rob Wilson. \n  \nParticipant bios: \nBing Lee was born in China and grew up in Hong Kong. He received his BFA from Columbus College of Art and Design and continued his graduate studies at Syracuse University. Currently\, he is living and working in New York City and Shanghai. \nLee established the Bing Lee Studio in 1990\, and has been commissioned to design and install site-specific public art projects\, including the Canal Street Subway Station in New York\, the Midwest Express Center in Milwaukee\, Kowloon Tong Station in Hong Kong\, Townsend Harris High School\, Public School 88 & Public School 242 public schools in New York. He is a founding member of Tomato Grey\, Godzilla-Asian American Arts Network\, Epoxy Art Group in New York\, and Visual Art Society in Hong Kong. \nKnown for her monumental public sculptures\, artist Jean Shin transforms discarded objects into powerful installations that examine our relationship with consumption\, collective identity\, and community engagement. Born in Seoul\, South Korea\, and raised in the U.S.\, Shin has earned international recognition through numerous prestigious commissions including Elevated (2018)\, large-scale glass mosaics at Manhattan’s 63rd Street–Lexington Avenue M.T.A subway station reimagining cast-iron facades and historic ornamentation\, and Celadon Remnants (2013) at Queens’ 39th Avenue station\, translating Korean pottery shards into glass designs. \nWorking from studios in Brooklyn and the Hudson Valley\, Shin has exhibited extensively at over 150 major institutions. Her solo exhibitions include The Museum of Modern Art in New York\, Philadelphia Museum of Art\, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. \nSaya Woolfalk (Japan\, 1979) is a New York based artist who uses science fiction and fantasy to re-imagine the world in multiple dimensions. With the multi-year projects No Place\, The Empathics\, and ChimaTEK\, Woolfalk has created the world of the Empathics\, a fictional race of women who are able to alter their genetic make-up and fuse with plants. With each body of work\, Woolfalk continues to build the narrative of these women’s lives\, and questions the utopian possibilities of cultural hybridity. \nShe has exhibited at museums\, galleries\, and alternative spaces throughout Asia\, Europe and the United States including solo exhibitions at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco (2014); SCAD Museum\, Savannah\, GA (2016); Everson Museum of Art\, Syracuse\, NY (2016); Sheldon Museum of Art\, Lincoln\, NE (2016); the Mead Museum of Art\, Amherst\, MA (2017) and group shows at the Studio Museum in Harlem; MoMA PS1\, Long Island City\, NY; the Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago\, among many others. \nParker Tao Fay is the Director of Ming Fay Studio\, where he manages all aspects of the artist’s studio and legacy\, including the studio space\, archive\, exhibitions and the publishing of the Ming Fay artist monograph Journey into Nature. In addition to his work with the studio\, he is an independent strategic consultant working across the international development\, nonprofit\, and corporate sectors. \nYaling Chen joined MTA Arts & Design in 2005 and has served as the Deputy Director since 2017. One of her core responsibilities is permanent art project planning and development\, staff management\, project supervision and oversight. She has overseen public art projects including the 68 Street-Hunter College station\, new Grand Central Madison LIRR Terminal\, MNR White Plains Station\, WTC-Cortlandt station at the World Trade Center site\, four transformed elevated stations on the Astoria Line in Queens\, 34 Street-Penn Station in Manhattan\, Fulton Center in Lower Manhattan\, and a new Bus Depot in Harlem\, among many others. She is currently leading the public art initiative for MTA’s Penn Station Access. She continues to lead A&D’s awarding-winning Digital Art program\, Photography Lightbox program\, as well as special projects. \n  \nLight refreshments will be provided. \n  \nSupporters of the exhibition “Metamorphosis: Chinese Imagination and Transformation” and its accompanying public programs are the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs\, Abel and Sophia Sheng\, Su Xiaobai Foundation\, Alisan Fine Arts New York\, and other individuals and institutional funders. \nAAAinA’s general programming and operations are funded in part by the New York State Council on the Arts\, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council\, the Vilcek Foundation\, and other foundations and individuals.

SUMMARY:Protecting Southeast Asian Communities
DESCRIPTION:Across the country\, Southeast Asian refugee and immigrant communities face devastating deportation impacts. Decades after families resettled in the United States as refugees\, thousands remain vulnerable to removal because of old criminal convictions\, many tied to the challenges of poverty\, trauma\, and lack of support. \nThis year marks the 50th anniversary of the end of U.S. wars in Southeast Asia\, making current deportation policies particularly heartbreaking. ICE deports some Southeast Asian refugees without due process to third countries in Africa and Latin America\, places they have never lived and have no connection to. Those sent to Southeast Asia often don’t have support starting a new life in a country and culture that is foreign to them\, or they barely remember it. \nCommunity-based Southeast Asian organizations have been on the frontlines providing legal support\, organizing for policy change\, and helping families heal. Yet these organizations remain severely underfunded\, limiting their ability to meet urgent needs and build long-term power. \nThis briefing brings together community leaders\, advocates\, and funders to discuss the current landscape of Southeast Asian deportations and the human toll on families. Together\, we will explore how philanthropy can step up to resource Southeast Asian organizations\, strengthen community resilience\, and advance a more just and inclusive future. \nSpeakers: \n\nConnie Chung Joe\, President and CEO\, AAPIP\nChhaya Choum\, Executive Director\, Southeast Asian Freedom Network\nCat Bao Le\, The Ba Lô Project\nDr. Thao Ha\, Collective Freedom\nEddy Zheng\, President & Founder\, New Breath Foundation\nRajasvini (Vini) Bhansali\, Executive Director\, Solidaire Network\nSophy Yem\, Program Officer\, Surdna Foundation (Moderator)\n\nYou will: \n\nHear real-time accounts of deportations and their impact on Southeast Asian families and communities\nLearn where philanthropic investments can have immediate and long-term impact\nUnderstand why AANHPI immigrant communities have been historically overlooked in immigration funding portfolios\nBuild authentic and trust-based partnerships with community organizations on the frontlines\n\nThis briefing is for: \n\nFoundation program officers and executives with immigration\, racial justice\, or AANHPI portfolios\nPhilanthropic leaders seeking to deepen understanding of Southeast Asian refugee issues\nFunders committed to supporting grassroots organizations and community power-building\nAnyone in philanthropy ready to mobilize resources for communities facing deportation

SUMMARY:Writing Workshop: Liberation Philology 101
DESCRIPTION:Join H. M. Zafer for a workshop on harnessing the generative and emancipatory power of scripture!\n\n\nThis is a two-part workshop\, scheduled over two dates – Tuesday\, 9/23\, and Wednesday\, 9/24 – between 6pm and 9pm ET each day. Workshop registration covers both dates. Please reach out to msaleh@aaww.org for assistance if you are able to join but the registration price is prohibitive. \n__ \nHarness the generative and emancipatory power of scripture. Discover your interpretive voice and expand your creative horizons. Develop an original piece of writing\, engaging with a sacred text – the Quran\, theGita\, the Granth\, the Gospels\, the Torah\, or any other scripture. \nLearn about the creative practice of “liberation philology” and subversive interpretation. Approach sacred writing with fresh understanding and interpretive confidence. No prior knowledge of any scripture or sacralized text is required. Just bring your c uriosity and creative spirit. \nThe workshop is designed to foster experimentation and collaboration in a safe environment. In consultation with the instructor\, you will select a sacred text as inspiration for a short creative writing piece. You will then develop the first draft of this piece\, which may be a translation\, poem\, narrative\, essay\, play\, or any literary exposition. You will receive feedback on the draft from a supportive community of fellow interpreters. As part of the workshop\, you will learn about three non-Biblical scriptures — the Quran\, the Bhagvad Gita\, and the Guru Granth Sahib — and their liberatory interpretive traditions. \nApplication: In 150 words or less\, please explain why are you interested in this workshop? How might it help your creative practice? What do you hope to accomplish or learn? Please send your application to msaleh@aaww.org. \n__ \nH. M. Zafer is a historical linguist and senior lecturer at Princeton University. He specializes in the classical languages of the global south\, including Quranic Arabic\, Biblical Ethiopic\, and Granthic Punjabi. He practices liberation philology\, a reading strategy that centers peripheralized linguistic and literary traditions in global histories of ideas. \n__ \nCOMMUNITY CARE & ACCESSIBILITY\nAt AAWW\, the safety and comfort of our community is our top priority. We invite you to practice intentionality and care in your behavior and language when engaging with our programs and with each other. Violence of any kind\, including but not limited to racism\, sexism\, homophobia\, transphobia\, ableism\, ageism\, class or casteism\, bigotry or bias toward religion or faith\, or any action or assault against marginalized identities\, is not tolerated.
