SUMMARY:From Past Prejudice to Present Policy: The Impact of Land Ownership Exclusion Laws on Diverse Communities
DESCRIPTION:Join Committee of 100 and APA Justice for an insightful discussion on the troubling resurgence of alien land laws — historically discriminatory policies that are reemerging in state legislatures across the U.S. Originally designed to prevent non-citizens\, particularly those from AAPI communities\, from owning property\, these laws are now being reframed as safeguards to national resources. We will discuss whether these laws properly address national security concerns or whether they are merely a pretext that infringes upon civil rights and liberties under the guise of protection. \nOur panel of legal experts and advocates will delve into the history of alien land laws\, examine their renewed impact on vulnerable communities and discuss key cases\, including a bill recently introduced in Florida. Whether you’re a policymaker\, legal professional\, journalist\, or concerned citizen\, this event is essential for anyone committed to upholding justice and equity in America.

SUMMARY:Cold War Memories and Asian American Poetry
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, we will explore how Asian Amer. subjectivity is conditioned by histories and ongoing realities of U.S. imperialism in Asia.\n\n\nCold War Memories and Asian American Poetry\nIn this session we will explore how Asian American subjectivity is conditioned by histories and ongoing realities of U.S. imperialism in Asia. Focusing in particular on the long afterlives of U.S. militarism in Korea and Southeast Asia from 1945-1975\, we will read and discuss four short poems by contemporary Asian American writers of Korean\, Vietnamese\, Hmong\, and Lao descent\, all of whom grapple with intergenerational memories of imperial violence in their homelands. This session will involve discussion among participants. \nOur instructor\, Adhy Kim (He/They)\, is an assistant professor in the Literatures in English Department and Asian American Studies Program at Cornell University. They are broadly interested in how Asian/American literature intersects with multiple imperial histories across Asia\, the Pacific\, and North America.

SUMMARY:Gefilte Fish to Chop Suey: The History of Kosher Chinese Food in New York City
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) and the Museum at Eldridge Street cordially invite you to a virtual seminar with Judaic Studies scholar Shiyong Lu on the history of kosher Chinese food in New York City. \nThe debate over the Jewish craze for Chinese food erupted in the New York Yiddish press in the 1920s. For commentators who considered food an embodiment of identity\, whether Jewish immigrants and their children stayed with gefilte fish or turned to chop suey indicated what kinds of values they held most dear. Once it became clear that this fervor for Chinese food was here to stay\, New York Jews in the late twentieth century sought to bridge the divide by incorporating Chinese cooking styles into traditional Jewish cuisine. With assistance from Chinese food purveyors\, they fashioned a new phenomenon\, kosher Chinese cuisine\, and pioneered efforts to popularize it. \nKosher Chinese restaurants and cookbooks soon became a specialty of New York City\, emulated by Jewish communities across the country and overseas. By confidently making Chinese food kosher\, New York Jews showed the vitality of American Jewish identity\, that being Jewish never conflicted with enjoying what their American home has to offer. Join NYU researcher and doctoral candidate Shiyong Lu as we explore this fascinating history in anticipation of the holiday season. \nPhoto Credit: Shutterstock: Brent Hofacker

SUMMARY:Not Your Model Minority Movie: How Asian & Asian American Cinema Got Real
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Samuel Jamier will dive into how the rise of Asian cinema is making waves that reach all the way to Asian American filmmaking.\n\n\nFrom Parasite to Everything Everywhere All at Once\, Asian and Asian American cinema are having more than just a moment—they’re transforming the landscape of the film world. The Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) invites you to a nuanced\, provocative conversation with Dr. Samuel Jamier\, President and Executive Director of the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF). Known for shaking up the world of Asian cinema\, Jamier has played a transformative role in putting Japanese\, Korean and Chinese films and filmmakers on the global radar\, spotlighting their critical and box-office successes. \nIn this talk\, Jamier will dive into how the rise of Asian cinema is making waves that reach all the way to Asian American filmmaking\, setting off a ripple effect that’s rewriting expectations—and\, frankly\, stealing the spotlight. \nJamier will explore what “Asian American cinema” even means today\, unpacking the quiet disappearance of the hyphen in “Asian-American.” Small change? Maybe. But it speaks volumes about shifting identity\, moving from a split between “Asian” and “American” to a more fluid\, self-determined identity—one that says\, “we’re not here to be pinned down.” Jamier will also tackle the risk of essentializing Asian American film\, championing a more complex view that resists tidy labels. \nTracing a path from the mythic Bruce Lee to the genre-bending Parasite\, the Oscar-winning Minari\, and the fresh territory of Dìdi\, Jamier will map out the converging worlds of Asian and Asian American cinema—two movements that spark off each other\, diverge\, and ultimately expand what we think cinema can be. He’ll also get into the gritty realities that Asian American filmmakers face and share his vision for a future where media doesn’t just represent but empowers\, challenging audiences and shaping cultural narratives in real time. The conversation will be moderated by Yifan Wu\, MOCA’s Director of Programs.

SUMMARY:Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001)
DESCRIPTION:Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001)\, an expansive survey of rarely-seen artwork and archival material by artists that constitute and exceed “Asian American\,” a label denoting a cultural and national identity invented in 1968. \nCo-curator Prof. Jayne Cole Southard will present on the exhibition\, Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001)\, an expansive survey of rarely-seen artwork and archival material by artists that constitute and exceed “Asian American\,” a label denoting a cultural and national identity invented in 1968. Utilizing an interdisciplinary and research-driven praxis\, Legacies uncovers how artists of Asian descent have historically negotiated identity in America as a set of situated practices and institutional structures amidst transnational diasporas\, racial phantasms\, and political imaginaries. \nPresenting over 90 artists and collectives\, Legacies is the first institutional survey exhibition focusing on artists of Asian descent who were based in New York City. Legacies also constellates three key artist collectives and organizations: Godzilla: Asian American Art Network; the Basement Workshop; and Asian American Arts Centre. All three organizations were artistic\, social\, and political hubs for diasporic Asian artists in New York that intersected with other marginalized communities.

SUMMARY:NEA Big Read: Interior Chinatown Book Discussion and Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore themes in Interior Chinatown and begin your own scripted story inspired by the book.\n\n\nThe Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) presents its 2024-25 NEA Big Read initiative\, featuring Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu\, a National Book Award winner. Under the theme Where We Live\, MOCA will host a series of free multidisciplinary public programs\, including book discussions and community events with authors\, artists\, performers\, and scholars throughout Winter 2024 and Spring 2025. \nTo celebrate the Hulu premiere of Interior Chinatown\, MOCA invites you to a book discussion and writing workshop led by educator Alice Fung. This interactive program will explore literary appreciation and include a dynamic writing activity inspired by the book. Themes such as writing family histories\, reflecting on the immigrant experience\, and creating narratives that address real-world challenges will be central to the discussion. Participants will also receive a FREE copy of Interior Chinatown. This event is open to all\, and no prior writing experience is required. \nNEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. \nAbout Interior Chinatown \nWillis Wu doesn’t perceive himself as the protagonist in his own life: he’s merely Generic Asian Man. Sometimes he gets to be Background Oriental Making a Weird Face or even Disgraced Son\, but always he is relegated to a prop. Yet every day\, he leaves his tiny room in a Chinatown SRO and enters the Golden Palace restaurant\, where Black and White\, a procedural cop show\, is in perpetual production. He’s a bit player here\, too\, but he dreams of being Kung Fu Guy—the most respected role that anyone who looks like him can attain. Or is it? \nAfter stumbling into the spotlight\, Willis finds himself launched into a wider world than he’s ever known\, discovering not only the secret history of Chinatown\, but the buried legacy of his own family. Infinitely inventive and deeply personal\, exploring the themes of pop culture\, assimilation\, and immigration—Interior Chinatown is Charles Yu’s most moving\, daring\, and masterful novel yet. \nAbout Charles Yu \nCharles Yu is the author of four books\, including his latest\, Interior Chinatown\, which won the 2020 National Book Award for Fiction\, was shortlisted for the Le Prix Médicis étranger\, and longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction. He has received the National Book Foundation’s 5 Under 35 Award\, been nominated for two Writers Guild of America awards for his work on the HBO series Westworld\, and has also written for shows on FX\, AMC\, Facebook Watch\, and Adult Swim. His fiction and non-fiction have appeared in a number of publications including the New Yorker\, the New York Times magazine\, the Atlantic\, Wired\, Time and Ploughshares.
