SUMMARY:Moving Rasa Discovery Cards Inside/Outside
DESCRIPTION:Move what’s inside\, outside. Move what’s outside\, inside. \nWhat happens when something you’re carrying inside—a feeling\, question\, image\, memory\, impulse—gets to take shape in the world around you? \nAnd what happens when the world answers back? \nOver six gatherings\, we’ll use the Moving Rasa Discovery Cards to improvise between our inner and outer worlds. We might climb onto something\, lean into another person\, follow the shape of a tree\, move with a wall\, let a card change our attention\, or allow an unexpected impulse to lead somewhere new. \nWe’ll work with group improvisation\, contact\, imagination\, questions\, and the environments we enter. Some gatherings will happen indoors. Others will take us outside into different NYC places. Each environment becomes part of what we discover. \nThere is no movement to get right and no fixed meaning to find in a card. We’ll notice what emerges through the relationships we make—with ourselves\, one another\, the cards\, and the places around us. \nLocation:\nReal World Sculptures: Norman A Rockefellar Park\nRiver Terrace and\, Chambers St\nNew York City\, NY 10282

SUMMARY:Yoshitaka Amano: Origins at the American Academy of Arts and Letters
DESCRIPTION:Yoshitaka Amano (b. 1952\, Shizuoka\, Japan) creates worlds. It’s something he’s done since he was fifteen\, when he moved to Tokyo and began working as a character designer for an anime studio. There\, drawing was always an act of translation. His task was to convert narrative into illustrated concepts\, drawings that would become the connective tissue of a fictional universe. Throughout his career as an independent artist and as a character designer for storied anime and video game franchises\, such as Final Fantasy and Vampire Hunter D\, drawing has always been a way of describing the porousness between the real and the fantastic. “I want to depict a world I myself have never seen\,” Amano says of the feeling from which his work begins. \nOrigins 始源 takes up Amano’s interest in primordial beginnings. Over the last few years\, Amano has been absorbed in Greek and Shinto mythology\, making drawings of the characters that animate these stories. Here\, he presents Pandora\, a series of drawings of the Greek myth of the first mortal woman; they circle the gallery like an ancient frieze\, or the storyboards for an animation. Alongside these works\, a selection of illustrations\, animation\, and popular materials from the 1980s and ’90s\, including the anime film Angel’s Egg and sensual depictions of The Tale of Genji\, is presented in our library. In all the stories Amano is drawn to\, origins are an eternal structure\, a threshold where being emerges. For him\, that threshold is the page; his figures seem to move and drift across its surface\, entering into worlds that exist beyond our lived reality. \nThis exhibition\, Amano’s first institutional solo show in New York\, offers a chance to encounter an artist whose drawings continue to have extended lives in the world around us. Right now\, more likely than not\, you could find them appearing on someone’s gaming console as they play Final Fantasy and livestream it to Twitch; on a Gatchaman Uniqlo tee worn in the streets of Tokyo; or even on an iPhone as someone watches Angel’s Egg on the subway\, in bed\, or really anywhere streaming is available. \nArts and Letters commissioned an essay\, Shining Genji\, by Sean Thor Conroe\, which accompanies the exhibition as part of our Reader series.

SUMMARY:MOCA PERFORMS – Echoes of Arrival: Becoming
DESCRIPTION:Immigration is never a single arrival but an ongoing process of becoming. Beyond legal status and paperwork\, immigrants navigate displacement\, alienation\, adaptation\, and the long\, sometimes complicated journey toward belonging. What did you have to learn to survive and build a life in the United States? What did you choose to carry with you from the culture you came from? What was lost in translation? And what new part of yourself emerged along the way? \nEchoes of Arrival returns to the Museum of Chinese in America for a new iteration\, Becoming. Through a collection of personal stories\, the ensemble explores the many ways immigrants remake themselves while making a life in a new country. These stories of change\, resilience\, loss\, discovery\, and belonging illuminate how immigration does not simply transform individuals. It continues to shape the rich and ever-evolving cultural fabric of the United States. \nCREATIVE TEAM\nConceived by Dennis Yueh-Yeh Li\nDevised & Performed by Shan Y. Chuang\, Nikkiesha N. SUMMARY:Gen’ichirō Inokuma’s NYC Salon
DESCRIPTION:Gen’ichirō Inokuma’s NYC Salon is the first New York solo museum exhibition of the Japanese modern artist Gen’ichirō Inokuma (1902–1993). Organized by Japan Society Gallery in collaboration with the Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art (MIMOCA) in Marugame\, Japan\, the exhibition explores Inokuma’s paintings shown at the Willard Gallery and various multimedia works created during his twenty-year residence in NYC (1955–1975). Along with important holdings from MIMOCA\, the exhibition presents Inokuma’s works in the Japan Society collection and the recently discovered Hirose Family Collection. \nInokuma’s Manhattan sojourn was shaped by meaningful connections with the American avant-garde: Jasper Johns\, Mark Rothko\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Alexander Calder\, David Smith\, Isamu Noguchi\, Yoko Ono\, John Cage\, Merce Cunningham\, and many others. Inokuma and his wife\, Fumiko\, also served as a social and cultural bridge between American and visiting Japanese artists and architects\, often hosting gatherings at their New York apartments. The exhibition features photographs\, film footage\, and ephemera documenting these artistic interactions. \nBy illuminating Inokuma’s little-known role in postwar American art history\, NYC Salon brings new insights into New York City’s mid-20th-century art world—both its collaborative artistic atmosphere\, and its vibrant international social scene \nTimed Tickets: $20 Nonmembers\, $15 Students and seniors \nGallery Exhibition Hours\n\nTuesdays-Fridays: 11 am-5 pm\n\n\nSaturdays & Sundays: noon-6 pm\n\n\nFree First Fridays: 5 pm-7 pm*\n\n\n*October 9\, 2026; November 6\, 2026; December 4\, 2026\, January 8\, 2027

SUMMARY:Hilda Shen: Their Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Hilda Shen’s Their Landscapes inaugurates Solo Artist Projects (SAP)\, a MOCA initiative dedicated to presenting compelling artistic voices through one-person exhibitions of new work. The Brooklyn-based artist will present an arrangement of recent ceramic sculptures and prints in the museum’s Cheng Gallery. \nShen’s artistic practice is characterized by an inquisitive scrutiny of nature and an instinct for deconstruction. The forms can appear both ancient and futuristic\, naturally occurring and handmade\, undergoing construction and decay. Their details and motifs open up conversations that cut across post-minimalism\, Chinese landscape painting\, and architectural space. \nAbout the artist \nHilda Shen was born in Minneapolis (1954) and spent much of her childhood in upstate  New York before settling in New York City in the 1970s. Her father grew up in Beijing while her mother was raised in Hangzhou. Shen studied classical music at Oberlin College before shifting to the visual arts. She lives and works in Brooklyn. \nShen’s sculpture\, prints\, drawings\, and installations have been shown throughout the New York City area\, Seattle\, and Beijing\, and most recently in a solo show at Starr Suites in Brooklyn. She has created large installations at WaveHill in the Bronx\, the Tenri Cultural Center in NY\, China2000 in NY\, and the Smithsonian Flushing Town Hall in Queens. She has been an artist in residence at Willapa Bay AIR\, The Bloedel Reserve\, Millay Colony for the Arts\, Yosemite National Park\, and Platte Clove. Her work is in private collections in the United States\, Belgium\, and Beijing. Shen’s work has been reviewed in The New York Times\, The Brooklyn Rail\, ArtAsiaPacific\, and ARTnews. \nAbout Solo Artist Projects \nMOCA’s Solo Artist Projects (SAP) embraces a broad and open-ended exploration of contemporary art\, presenting a wide range of mediums\, practices\, traditions and ideas. It will feature artists of Chinese descent\, living and working in New York City. SAP will be a space for artists with established careers\, emerging artists\, those who live and work in and around Chinatown\, and art historical figures who deserve institutional attention. We will begin accepting submissions for Solo Artists Projects through an open call process in early 2027\, eligible to NYC-based artists of Chinese descent. Details forthcoming on MOCA’s website.

SUMMARY:Emily Feng: Uyghurs in Syria
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a timely conversation with NPR journalist Emily Feng on her groundbreaking new book Our Hearts Burned for Home: Uyghur Militants in Syria’s Civil War (Columbia Global Reports\, October 2026)\, an extraordinary work of reportage tracing one of the most surprising and consequential stories to emerge from the global war on terror. \nDrawing on years of reporting across China\, Central Asia\, Turkey and the Middle East\, Feng uncovers the little-known journey of Uyghur families and militants who fled China’s intensifying surveillance state and mass repression in Xinjiang\, seeking refuge abroad. For many\, escape did not bring safety. Instead\, exile led them into the chaos of the Syrian Civil War\, where some Uyghur militants became an unexpected and influential force in the conflict that helped reshape the region and contributed to the eventual collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Through intimate storytelling and sharp geopolitical analysis\, Feng reveals how displacement\, statelessness and repression can reverberate far beyond national borders. \nAt once deeply human and urgently political\, Our Hearts Burned for Home challenges conventional narratives about extremism\, migration and resistance. It asks difficult questions about belonging\, radicalization and the global consequences of authoritarian rule\, while centering the voices of people whose stories have too often been ignored. \nCopies of Our Hearts Burned for Home will be on sale\, with the author available to sign them. \nFeng will be joined in conversation by New York Times journalist Michael Forsythe\, and the event is presented by China Books Review\, a digital magazine of reviews\, essays\, profiles and more — follow their newsletter for event postings and discounts. \nEmily Feng is an award-winning correspondent for NPR covering China\, Taiwan and beyond\, reporting on everything from semiconductors to drones\, environmental wastelands to girl bands. Formerly based in Beijing and Taipei\, she now lives in Washington D.C. Feng is the author of Our Hearts Burned for Home (2026) and Let Only Red Flowers Bloom (2025). \nMichael Forsythe is an American journalist. He is an investigative reporter for The New York Times\, and was formerly Beijing correspondent for Bloomberg News in the 2010s. Forsythe is the coauthor with Henry Sanderson of China’s Superbank (2013).

SUMMARY:Yoshitomo Nara Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:David Zwirner is pleased to present an exhibition by Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara (b. 1959) featuring new paintings and drawings\, recent sculptures\, and early works selected by the artist. Spanning the gallery’s 537 West 20th Street and 533 West 19th Street locations in New York\, this exhibition will be the artist’s first solo presentation with David Zwirner and his first major solo exhibition in New York in nearly a decade. \nSince the mid-1980s\, Nara’s multidisciplinary approach has produced a distinctive and varied body of work. His artistic sensibilities were uniquely formed and shaped by his solitary childhood in rural northern Japan. Nara’s formative encounters with nature\, folklore\, and children’s fables\, and his revelatory discovery of popular music through his self-built radio\, are the source of his creativity. Through introspection\, Nara freely reimagines his past experiences\, and they have determined his visual language and steered his stylistic development for four decades. \nThrough philosophical dialogues with his intrinsic self\, Nara creates personified entities. Depicted with big heads and wide eyes\, they are celebrated for their characterful demeanor and perceived to possess both innocence and defiance. Nara understands these figures as self-portraits\, and when his dynamic imagery emerged in the 1990s\, it was recognized as an expression of raw emotion\, carrying a spirit comparable to punk and rock music in its directness and intensity. Over time\, it has come to function differently. Today\, many people see Nara’s characters as projections of themselves\, mirroring their own sentiments and vulnerabilities. As a result\, these images have transcended their original impetus and become cultural touchstones\, resonating with a global audience and influencing younger generations of artists and viewers alike. \nBringing together foundational works from the 1980s and paintings from 2026\, this exhibition will illuminate the latest evolutions of Nara’s singular proxies. Newly completed paintings on canvas—front-facing portraits with direct gazes—show a significant development in his color palette. Over the past year\, his intricately layered colors have become more muted and highly nuanced\, while his increasingly diffused brushwork\, through which his forms materialize\, creates richly atmospheric depths across the surface. Other paintings reveal a new method in which Nara sketches compositions in colored pencil\, developing a framework drawing before applying washes of translucent acrylic—the figures adopt natural poses\, and their tear-filled eyes communicate an air of uncertainty. In tandem\, recent large-format\, monochrome drawings made with industrial oil-based paint sticks will be exhibited. By contrast\, these works are emphatically linear\, demonstrating the breadth of Nara’s two-dimensional output. On the surface\, his imagery may appear formally divergent\, but it captures a shared emotional intensity\, evoking universal feelings. \nNara integrated his drawing style into his painting practice as a student\, simplifying his compositions\, paring down his use of color\, and introducing an economy of line. Unbound by conventional methods\, Nara employs paint in ways aligned with how he uses pen and pencil. Whichever medium or implement he chooses\, for him drawing is an assured action\, the result of an immediate inspiration—it is a state of mind. In what Nara calls his “line” paintings\, he enlarges his bold notebook sketches through projection and reanimates them in paint. The deceptively simple outlines retain their original creative impulse and the freedom that drawing allows—the rapid execution and fluid delineation. \nIn conjunction with the presentation of paintings and drawings at 20th Street\, thirteen of Nara’s 10-times sculptural enlargements from 2024 will be on display at the 19th Street gallery. Coated in white urethane paint\, the matte surface affording an apparent softness\, these large-scale bronze heads recall the snow “monsters” that Nara knew from childhood winters\, created by heavy snowfall. He envisaged the enlargements as he sculpted their palm-sized clay prototypes\, fascinated by the potential psychological impacts of experiencing the small\, evidently hand-molded heads on a monumental scale. Encountering the magnification of their simple facial expressions\, and the play of light and shadow across their smooth surfaces\, nurtures conditions for serenity and contemplation. \nThis exhibition will coincide with the opening of Yoshitomo Nara: Sentinels of Stillness at the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden in Washington\, DC. Three monumental sculptures\, sixteen-times enlargements of Nara’s small clay heads\, will inaugurate the Annual West Lawn Series and be on view from October 31\, 2026 through November 7\, 2027.

SUMMARY:Book Talk | Carryout by Hasan Dudar
DESCRIPTION:A Poets & Writers First Fiction 2026 Debut SelectionIn the late 1970s\, Ziad Idilbi a Palestinian refugee from Lebanon\, marries Salma\, a Lebanese refugee escaping the war in Beirut. Resolving to start over for the very last time\, the couple opens a corner store in Toledo\, Ohio. Over the decades\, whether it’s bigotry (pre- and post-9/11)\, financial ruin\, or terminal illness\, the Idilbis find themselves on life’s outskirts\, always seemingly one day away from catastrophe. The linked stories in Carryout follow Walid Idilbi\, the youngest child of Ziad and Salma\, as he navigates the heartbreaks of youth\, the many colorful characters from Toledo’s Arab community\, and growing up into a writer. Unsure at times whether to run toward each other or away from each other\, the characters in Dudar’s exquisite debut suffer the absurdities and indignities of life in America with wry obstinance and striking wisdom. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \n\nHasan Dudar is the author of Carryout\, a forthcoming short story collection with the University of Iowa Press. He is originally from Toledo\, Ohio\, and currently lives with his wife and daughter in Washington\, DC\, where he works in broadcast media. His fiction has appeared in Gulf Coast and Pinch\, among other places\, and was awarded the 2025 Pinch Literary Award in Fiction. A graduate of the Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism\, Hasan’s reporting has appeared in various publications including USA Today\, Detroit Free Press\, The Toledo Blade\, Bloomberg News\, TRT World\, and Aljazeera America. In 2015\, he co-produced the award-winning documentary The Last of Little Syria\, which follows some of the last Arab American residents living in Toledo\, Ohio’s historic Arab enclave. \nIN CONVERSATION WITH \n\n\nReena Shah is the author of the novel Every Happiness and the forthcoming story collection Bad Neighbors. Her work has appeared in swamp pink\, Lit Hub\, Debutiful\, Electric Literature\, the Masters Review\, Joyland\, BBC\, The Guardian\, and National Geographic\, among others. SUMMARY:Leenalchi
DESCRIPTION:Seoul alt-pop sensation Leenalchi live at Pioneer Works\, co-presented with WMI.\n\n\nThe Seoul-based seven-piece phenomenon brings their infectious fusion of 17th-century Korean storytelling and deep-groove psychedelic funk to Brooklyn for an unforgettable\, danceable night in the Main Hall. \nPioneer Works is thrilled to team up with WMI to present the Brooklyn debut of Leenalchi\, the sensational Seoul-based band celebrating their Luaka Bop debut EP\, Here Comes That Crow. Led by visionary bassist and film composer Jang Young Gyu\, Leenalchi completely upends modern alternative music by reimagining pansori—a traditional Korean musical storytelling style rooted in shamanism—as blistering\, bass-heavy synth-rock. \nWith a singular lineup featuring two bassists\, drums\, keys\, absolutely no guitars\, and four transcendent vocalists\, Leenalchi crafts a sound that is simultaneously spiritual\, ancient\, and fiercely futuristic. Their lead single and title track\, “Here Comes That Crow\,” transforms an epic centuries-old allegory about a warlord’s precarious battle into a cross-cultural dance floor filler driven by hypnotic\, driving rhythms. \nAbout the Artists \nLeenalchi (EEE-nal-chi) is a seven-piece alternative pop/rock band from Seoul\, South Korea\, that has taken the international music scene by storm. Rooted in the traditional Korean art of pansori—an epic\, operatic form of musical storytelling dating back to the Joseon Dynasty—the band strips away conventional rock tropes\, opting for a rhythm section consisting of two bassists and a drummer to ground the soaring\, acrobatic deliveries of their four vocalists: Ahn Yi Ho\, Park Soo Bum\, Ra Seo Jin\, and Choi Su In. To achieve their mind-bending vocal strength\, pansori singers traditionally train alongside roaring waterfalls to mimic the complex\, sonic nuances of rushing water. When layered over Leenalchi’s collaborative\, wordless funk grooves\, the result is a masterclass in rhythm\, storytelling\, and danceable avant-garde pop. \nJang Young Gyu\, an Enigmatic bassist and bandleader\, looms large as a pioneer in South Korea’s indie and alternative music scenes. His relentless drive to experiment with pansori began in 2007\, eventually leading him to form groundbreaking groups like BIBING\, the viral sensation SsingSsing—whose legendary NPR Tiny Desk concert garnered nearly 10 million views—and ultimately\, Leenalchi. Beyond his massive contributions to alternative music\, Jang is one of South Korea’s most prestigious and sought-after film composers. He has written the critically acclaimed\, pulse-pounding soundtracks for some of the country’s most celebrated cinematic masterpieces\, including the horror phenomenon The Wailing\, the stylistic western The Good\, the Bad\, the Weird\, and the global blockbuster thriller Train to Busan.

SUMMARY:Adrift in the South: China's Migrant Literature
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lively conversation on the rise of China’s migrant worker literature\, bringing the voices and lived experiences of the country’s vast internal migrant population into the literary mainstream. \nWe will be joined by Xiao Hai\, author of Adrift in the South (Granta\, April 2026)\, a gripping autobiographical account of his 23 years as a migrant laborer\, as well as its translator Tony Hao. In the book\, Xiao recounts working 17 different jobs across seven cities in China\, moving through factories\, construction sites and service-sector work in search of survival and dignity. His story captures not only the physical exhaustion and precarity of migrant labor\, but also the resilience\, solidarity and hard-won moments of humanity that emerge amid relentless economic pressures. \nAs migrant worker writing gains increasing recognition both within China and internationally\, Adrift in the South offers a vital lens into questions of class\, mobility\, inequality and belonging in contemporary Chinese society. Together with other recently translated works\, such as Hu Anyan’s Delivering Parcels in Beijing\, this genre offers an unflinching portrait of the people who have powered China’s economic transformation while often remaining socially and culturally marginalized. The discussion will explore the emergence of worker literature as both a literary movement and a form of social testimony\, examining how personal narrative can illuminate broader structural realities. \nCopies of Adrift in the South will be on sale\, with the author available to sign them. \nThe event is presented by China Books Review\, a digital magazine of reviews\, essays\, profiles and more — follow their newsletter for event postings and discounts. \nXiao Hai is a Chinese poet and writer. Having worked as a migrant laborer for many years\, he was also a long-standing member of the Picun Writers’ Collective in Beijing. He is the author of Adrift in the South (2026)\, translated by Tony Hao. He lives in Beijing. \nTony Hao is a Chinese-to-English literary translator and writer. He is the translator of Adrift in the South (2026) by Xiao Hai\, as well as Tong Wei-Ger\, Ban Yu\, and others. His short-form translations have appeared in Granta\, The Wall Street Journal and elsewhere. Hao is based in New Haven.

Playwright and screenwriter Lauren Yee\, Tony-winning actor Francis Jue and playwright David Henry Hwang talk about sharing the notion of family in their work\, their poignant\, moving stories of their fathers\, and the art of portraying them on the stage. An “epic joyride across cultural\, national and familial borders”\, King of the Yees tells the story of Lauren’s father Larry Yee (played by Francis Jue)\, a driving force in San Francisco Chinatown. Francis Jue has also played David Henry Hwang’s father in his Tony-winning play\, Yellowface. Lauren\, Francis\, and David discuss Asian American families\, lineages and storytelling in the theater as part of this special conversation at Asia Society. \n\nKing of the Yees (Signature Theatre)  \n10.06.26–11.15.26 / Tue–Sun / 7 – 9 P.M. \nWritten by Lauren Yee \nDirected by Joshua Kahan Brody \nFor nearly twenty years\, Larry Yee has been the heart and soul of the Yee Fung Toy Family Association\, a fraternal organization in San Francisco’s iconic Chinatown.
