SUMMARY:Afterlayers: Tai Hwa Goh & Julia Kwon
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception: Thursday\, September 17\, 2026\, 5-7pm \nTwo artists transform traditional materials–textile and paper–to explore themes of identity and memory. Tai Hwa Goh creates intricate\, layered installations from printed and cut paper\, inspired by organic forms\, landscapes\, and the relationship between the interior and exterior. Goh’s process pushes the limits of traditional printmaking\, as she modifies the characteristics of paper and thin fabric by covering with batik or ironing thin sheets of beeswax onto her prints\, deliberately obscuring the underlying images. She then uses techniques like sewing\, gluing\, and manipulating printed materials to construct intricate\, honeycomb-like structures. Found objects seamlessly integrate into the work\, reflecting the blending of the personal and the universal\, as well as natural and artificial elements.Through this process\, the imagery gradually moves away from recognizable forms\, and the dense layers serve as a space where nature\, memory\, and personal experience intertwine. Her installations invite viewers to contemplate the balance between the natural world and human existence\, and how everyday moments can reveal deeper insights into our lives. \nJulia Kwon sews interpretive Korean textiles\, specifically in the form of patchwork bojagi (Korean object-wrapping cloth)\, to critique received notions of Asiatic femininity and challenge reductive\, easily legible identities. Although her bojagi textiles may initially be perceived as traditionally Korean\, the patchwork designs are actually derived from urgent contemporary sociopolitical issues and events. Her work moves beyond simply representing minority identities as she aims to comment on the interconnected systems of oppression. Kwon’s practice contests the notion of authenticity and explores the complexities involved in constructing identities within the current framework of cultural hybridity\, intersectionality\, and the collective pursuit of social justice \nThe Korea Society Gallery is open only by appointment.\nThe appointment must be made at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled visit. \nGallery Hours: Monday-Friday 10 AM-4:30 PM\nBy Appointment Only

SUMMARY:Zine* Together
DESCRIPTION:Please join Asia Art Archive in America on Thursday\, September 17th from 5-8pm for the opening reception of their exhibition\, Zine﹡ Together. \nZine﹡ Together is the first exhibition of its kind to examine Asian American zines not only as objects\, but as actions—creative\, collective\, and relational. Drawing from Asia Art Archive in America’s Reading Room collection\, this exhibition highlights collaboratively produced zines from 2010 to the present\, alongside newly commissioned projects and prompts that trace zine-making as a mode of shared authorship and community building. \nIn the 1960s and 1970s\, zines (short for “magazines” or “fan-zines”) were characterized by their photo-copied\, staple-bound formats and emerged as popular do-it-yourself platforms for sharing counter-cultural socio-political programs and avant-garde art practice. In more recent decades and particularly in Asian American communities\, zines have served as a place to explore artistic narratives\, diasporic histories\, and collective responses to marginalization. \nKey to this exhibition is a commissioned research project and essay by Michelle Yee\, PhD\, and Elizabeth Chung that investigates the recent history of Asian American zines in relation to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic and the parallel rise in anti-Asian violence across the United States. Situating zine-making within this moment of crisis\, the research frames the medium as one of many grassroots strategies for care\, documentation\, and solidarity. Together\, the exhibition and research project position zines not as peripheral ephemera\, but as vital cultural tools that register and record how communities respond in times of uncertainty. \nZine﹡ Together\, itself a collaborative project\, is organized by Claire Kim\, Susanna Chang\, Sarula Bao\, Michelle Yee\, Elizabeth Chung\, Mary Y. Yang\, Chen Luo\, and Tasnima Tanzim.

SUMMARY:Synthetic Mobility
DESCRIPTION:Fou Gallery is pleased to present “Synthetic Mobility”\, a two-person exhibition featuring Tokyo- and New York-based artist Ai Makita and China-born\, Houston-based kinetic artist Sizhu Li\, on view from September 19 through November 8\, 2026. The exhibition brings to the fore important questions about the interaction between technology and humans\, considering how larger societal shifts affect the way artists represent humanity and reconstituted spaces. \nThe concept of the exhibition is connected to Timothy Morton’s idea of hyperobjects\, according to which we cannot fully perceive larger structures surrounding us and widely distributed across space and time\, but can try to describe their attributes and make a reasonable guess about their true nature. Synthetic mobility – the artificial generation of realistic human movement patterns using advanced algorithms – is a phenomenon related to the new acceleration of living rhythms promoted by digital progress. As the world is enveloped in ideological and cultural conflicts\, Makita and Li consider what it means to remain individuals today\, and how changes in technology alter our sense of perception and our mode of existence. \nAi Makita presents oil paintings\, several of them developed in conjunction with the AI model Midjourney and others based on images created in Photoshop by folding aluminum sheets. The depicted forms represent abstract conjunctions of pipes\, conduits\, and industrial infrastructure. Folded materials result in labyrinths of fluidity and line resembling a circulatory or nervous system\, an organism’s internal anatomy\, or an invisible technological network now made visible. The created conduits recall flowing rivers\, transcended thresholds\, and the linearity of time. Close conceptual connection with Minimalism makes Makita’s stretched lines internally connected to Donald Judd looking at the properties and the rigidity of the structures as well as relation of this (in)stability to the current historical moment. Process art likewise plays a significant role in Makita’s practice\, albeit in a form more appropriate to its new\, updated version\, where the digital has taken the place of the physical. Her paintings leave the viewer with a sense of wonder about where these meandering curves are leading and whether there is any specific destination. Mystery emerges not through mystical effects\, but through the inability to grasp the full picture\, pushing us to step away while also looking closer. \nSizhu Li presents sculptures made primarily from aluminum sheets and industrial fans. In Pushing Hands (2024–present)\, opposing forces travel through an industrial metal wave\, creating a rhythm of tension and equilibrium that references the Taoist principle of balance. The title directly refers to the fundamental Tai Chi practice of Tui Shou\, or “pushing hands\,” centered on sensing\, yielding to\, and balancing opposing forces. Evolving from her earlier project Moonment\, Li uses programmed fans and suspended aluminum sheets to construct a live\, percussive environment of moving metallic waves. In Yuanbao (2026)\, she brings the traditional Chinese symbol of wealth and blessing into conversation with the ephemeral form of clouds\, moving between material and spiritual aspirations\, permanence and transience. Meanwhile\, Oops\, Caught’ya! (2026) turns the clamp into both a generative and restraining device\, using movement\, suspension\, and pressure to consider freedom\, constraint\, instability\, and balance. \nTogether\, the two artists create a dialogue in which materials work as experimental tools to devise new understandings of where we are as a human species. Both artists look at motion\, structure\, and encounter as facilitated by materials\, planes\, and color. Makita’s paintings examine the transformations and limits caused by new synthetic mobility\, while Li’s sculptures engage the same idea through three-dimensional objects. Neither artist provides specific arguments or answers; instead\, they offer aesthetic tools that can help broaden our understanding of the technological forces increasingly shaping contemporary life.

SUMMARY:Moving Rasa Discovery Cards Inside/Outside
DESCRIPTION:Move what’s inside\, outside. Move what’s outside\, inside. \nWhat happens when something you’re carrying inside—a feeling\, question\, image\, memory\, impulse—gets to take shape in the world around you? \nAnd what happens when the world answers back? \nOver six gatherings\, we’ll use the Moving Rasa Discovery Cards to improvise between our inner and outer worlds. We might climb onto something\, lean into another person\, follow the shape of a tree\, move with a wall\, let a card change our attention\, or allow an unexpected impulse to lead somewhere new. \nWe’ll work with group improvisation\, contact\, imagination\, questions\, and the environments we enter. Some gatherings will happen indoors. Others will take us outside into different NYC places. Each environment becomes part of what we discover. \nThere is no movement to get right and no fixed meaning to find in a card. We’ll notice what emerges through the relationships we make—with ourselves\, one another\, the cards\, and the places around us. \nLocation:\nReal World Sculptures: Norman A Rockefellar Park\nRiver Terrace and\, Chambers St\nNew York City\, NY 10282

SUMMARY:Yoshitaka Amano: Origins at the American Academy of Arts and Letters
DESCRIPTION:Yoshitaka Amano (b. 1952\, Shizuoka\, Japan) creates worlds. It’s something he’s done since he was fifteen\, when he moved to Tokyo and began working as a character designer for an anime studio. There\, drawing was always an act of translation. His task was to convert narrative into illustrated concepts\, drawings that would become the connective tissue of a fictional universe. Throughout his career as an independent artist and as a character designer for storied anime and video game franchises\, such as Final Fantasy and Vampire Hunter D\, drawing has always been a way of describing the porousness between the real and the fantastic. “I want to depict a world I myself have never seen\,” Amano says of the feeling from which his work begins. \nOrigins 始源 takes up Amano’s interest in primordial beginnings. Over the last few years\, Amano has been absorbed in Greek and Shinto mythology\, making drawings of the characters that animate these stories. Here\, he presents Pandora\, a series of drawings of the Greek myth of the first mortal woman; they circle the gallery like an ancient frieze\, or the storyboards for an animation. Alongside these works\, a selection of illustrations\, animation\, and popular materials from the 1980s and ’90s\, including the anime film Angel’s Egg and sensual depictions of The Tale of Genji\, is presented in our library. In all the stories Amano is drawn to\, origins are an eternal structure\, a threshold where being emerges. For him\, that threshold is the page; his figures seem to move and drift across its surface\, entering into worlds that exist beyond our lived reality. \nThis exhibition\, Amano’s first institutional solo show in New York\, offers a chance to encounter an artist whose drawings continue to have extended lives in the world around us. Right now\, more likely than not\, you could find them appearing on someone’s gaming console as they play Final Fantasy and livestream it to Twitch; on a Gatchaman Uniqlo tee worn in the streets of Tokyo; or even on an iPhone as someone watches Angel’s Egg on the subway\, in bed\, or really anywhere streaming is available. \nArts and Letters commissioned an essay\, Shining Genji\, by Sean Thor Conroe\, which accompanies the exhibition as part of our Reader series.

SUMMARY:SLEEPLESS NIGHT
DESCRIPTION:Chinese American Counci is pleased to present SLEEPLESS NIGHT\, a solo exhibition by Xuhong Shang\, on view from October 2 through October 23. \n\n\n\n\nSLEEPLESS NIGHT is an exhibition that explores the unstable boundary between reality and dream\, presence and absence\, movement and confinement. Through installation\, photographic fragments\, painting\, video\, sound\, and spatial intervention\, Xuhong Shang creates an environment where perception is interrupted and certainty becomes fragile. \nThe exhibition is centered around the single-channel video Sleepless Night and expands into a physical installation composed of dark surfaces\, fragmented images\, linear structures\, and layered visual interruptions. The exhibition suggests a space where images appear partially concealed\, crossed\, taped\, and suspended within a field of darkness. These elements create a visual rhythm of obstruction and passage\, suggesting windows\, routes\, barriers\, memories\, and psychological thresholds. The viewer is invited not only to look at the work\, but to move through a condition of uncertainty. \nThe title SLEEPLESS NIGHT evokes a state of wakefulness between consciousness and dream. In this in-between condition\, time becomes stretched\, thoughts become fragmented\, and ordinary images take on emotional and symbolic weight. The exhibition reflects this mental space through fractured compositions\, grayscale imagery\, and stark contrasts between light and shadow. The visible world appears unstable\, as if caught between documentation and imagination. \nThe dark wall surface may be understood as a night sky\, an interior void\, or a psychological field. Across this darkness\, white strip boards cut through the canvas images and extend outward into the surrounding space. These sharp white lines suggest lightning crossing the night\, sudden flashes of thought\, or cracks breaking through the surface of memory. They connect the images while also damaging and disrupting them\, creating a tension between illumination and rupture. As the strips move from image to dark space\, they become more than formal devices; they operate as psychological forces\, exposing the instability of perception and the fragile condition of the mind during sleeplessness. \nTravel\, architecture\, and transitional spaces emerge as recurring visual references. Airplanes\, airport-like structures\, passages\, and abstracted silhouettes suggest movement across distance\, yet this movement is never fully free. Instead\, it is crossed by interruptions\, invisible borders\, and psychological weight. The white linear forms may be read as paths\, fractures\, signals\, restrictions\, or flashes of anxiety. They point toward direction and disorientation at the same time. \nIn Shang’s work\, ambiguity functions as a space of possibility. Rather than presenting a fixed narrative\, SLEEPLESS NIGHT asks viewers to confront the uncertain nature of perception itself. The exhibition reflects on how memory\, migration\, globalization\, and cultural experience shape the way we understand reality. It questions how images carry traces of personal and collective history\, and how the intangible forces of dream\, anxiety\, nostalgia\, and desire can become physically present within space. \nThe video Sleepless Night\, a single-channel work with sound\, becomes both an anchor and an atmosphere for the exhibition. Its duration suggests an intimate encounter with time\, while its presence extends the installation into a psychological and sensory field. Sound and moving image deepen the feeling of suspended consciousness\, placing the viewer within a state where the real and the imagined overlap. \nUltimately\, SLEEPLESS NIGHT is an exhibition about uncertainty as a condition of contemporary life. It invites viewers into a contemplative space where images are incomplete\, meanings remain open\, and the familiar becomes strange. Between darkness and light\, movement and stillness\, dream and reality\, the exhibition asks: what remains visible when certainty disappears?

SUMMARY:MOCA PERFORMS – Echoes of Arrival: Becoming
DESCRIPTION:Immigration is never a single arrival but an ongoing process of becoming. Beyond legal status and paperwork\, immigrants navigate displacement\, alienation\, adaptation\, and the long\, sometimes complicated journey toward belonging. What did you have to learn to survive and build a life in the United States? What did you choose to carry with you from the culture you came from? What was lost in translation? And what new part of yourself emerged along the way? \nEchoes of Arrival returns to the Museum of Chinese in America for a new iteration\, Becoming. Through a collection of personal stories\, the ensemble explores the many ways immigrants remake themselves while making a life in a new country. These stories of change\, resilience\, loss\, discovery\, and belonging illuminate how immigration does not simply transform individuals. It continues to shape the rich and ever-evolving cultural fabric of the United States. \nCREATIVE TEAM\nConceived by Dennis Yueh-Yeh Li\nDevised & Performed by Shan Y. Chuang\, Nikkiesha N. SUMMARY:Gen’ichirō Inokuma’s NYC Salon
DESCRIPTION:Gen’ichirō Inokuma’s NYC Salon is the first New York solo museum exhibition of the Japanese modern artist Gen’ichirō Inokuma (1902–1993). Organized by Japan Society Gallery in collaboration with the Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art (MIMOCA) in Marugame\, Japan\, the exhibition explores Inokuma’s paintings shown at the Willard Gallery and various multimedia works created during his twenty-year residence in NYC (1955–1975). Along with important holdings from MIMOCA\, the exhibition presents Inokuma’s works in the Japan Society collection and the recently discovered Hirose Family Collection. \nInokuma’s Manhattan sojourn was shaped by meaningful connections with the American avant-garde: Jasper Johns\, Mark Rothko\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Alexander Calder\, David Smith\, Isamu Noguchi\, Yoko Ono\, John Cage\, Merce Cunningham\, and many others. Inokuma and his wife\, Fumiko\, also served as a social and cultural bridge between American and visiting Japanese artists and architects\, often hosting gatherings at their New York apartments. The exhibition features photographs\, film footage\, and ephemera documenting these artistic interactions. \nBy illuminating Inokuma’s little-known role in postwar American art history\, NYC Salon brings new insights into New York City’s mid-20th-century art world—both its collaborative artistic atmosphere\, and its vibrant international social scene \nTimed Tickets: $20 Nonmembers\, $15 Students and seniors \nGallery Exhibition Hours\n\nTuesdays-Fridays: 11 am-5 pm\n\n\nSaturdays & Sundays: noon-6 pm\n\n\nFree First Fridays: 5 pm-7 pm*\n\n\n*October 9\, 2026; November 6\, 2026; December 4\, 2026\, January 8\, 2027

SUMMARY:“Choreographies of Care” by Kim Ye
DESCRIPTION:The 30-minute movement-based performance combines choreography from the Asian tradition of park dancing with US military parade sequences\, Qigong\, and gestures taken from pregnancy\, childrearing\, and sex work. Performed by an intergenerational ensemble to a score that layers Chinese nursery rhymes\, traditional East Asian instrumentals\, in utero recordings\, and “Taps\,” the piece proposes caregiving as a form of national service that requires the sacrifice of feminized\, immigrant\, and Asian bodies. \nThe performance will be documented by aerial drone for further development as a video piece\, rendering heroic bodies that rupture under the collective weight of care. \nPERFORMED BY: Anh Vo\, Gentle Mothh\, Jas Lin\, Kim Ye\, and Tina Ye \nCHOREOGRAPHED BY: Jas Lin\, Gentle Mothh \nORIGINAL SCORE BY: Micah Huang\, featuring Tina Ye \nCOSTUME DESIGN BY: Gumamela Bloom\, made by House of Bloom

SUMMARY:Book Launch | Needlemouth by K-Ming Chang
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE BOOK \nFrom the award-winning author of Bestiary\, three cousins are forced to complete an impossible and violent task set by a vengeful demon. \nCousins Cindy\, Yangyang\, and Mandy’s hot\, tedious summer unfolds in their grandmother’s hauntingly familiar house. Mandy\, the eldest\, seeks connection online and exchanges emails with a stranger. Yangyang\, the youngest\, retreats into her own imagination in search of meaning. But every morning Cindy wakes with strange objects in her mouth: a button\, a berry\, a coin. \nOne night\, a starved figure with a mouth the size of a needle-tip appears at Cindy’s bedside. She is hunger-afflicted\, a demon with no descendants to feed from: she is Needlemouth. Part vampire\, part hungry ghost\, Needlemouth forces the girls into a grim task to end a man’s life. \nCindy\, Yangyang\, and Mindy are plunged in and out of the demon realm\, where they are called to break out of the indifference and numbness of their claustrophobic worlds\, and where they are met with the most rageful and resistant parts of themselves. In a quest to satisfy the demon’s hunger\, they unravel their shared grief and reckon with the cyclical violence that shaped their family. For readers of Akwaeke Emezi and Carmen Maria Machado\, K-Ming Chang has crafted a reimagined coming of age novel that asks: what does it mean to become the monster instead of slaying it? \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nK-Ming Chang is a Lambda Literary Award winner\, a National Book Foundation 5 Under 35 honoree\, a Kundiman Fellow\, and an O. Henry Prize Winner. She is the author of the novel BESTIARY (One World/Random House\, 2020)\, which was shortlisted for the Faulkner Award and longlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize\, the VCU Cabell First Novelist Award\, and the Otherwise Award. In 2021\, her chapbook BONE HOUSE was published by Bull City Press. Her story collection GODS OF WANT (One World/Random House) won a Lambda Literary Award\, and her books have been translated into Spanish\, Chinese\, Korean\, German\, Turkish\, and other languages. Her most recent books are ORGAN MEATS (One World\, 2023) and a novella titled CECILIA (Coffee House Press\, 2024). In 2026\, she will be making her YA debut with STRAIGHT TO THE SOURCE\, a romance forthcoming from Holiday House\, and her second YA project\, a novel-in-verse titled GIRL GODS\, will be forthcoming from Kokila (Penguin Random House) in 2027. Her writing is most frequently described as “not for everybody” and occasionally described as “for the freaks.” \nIN CONVERSATION WITH \nAlice Evelyn Yang is a Chinese American writer from Norfolk\, Virginia based in New York. Her debut novel\, A Beast Slinks Towards Beijing\, is out now from William Morrow and DeadInk Books. Her shorter work is published in Michigan Quarterly Review\, Apogee\, The Rumpus\, and AAWW’s The Margins\, among others. She is the recipient of the 2022-23 Jesmyn Ward Prize from MQR. Her work explores themes of environmental racism\, immigration\, intergenerational trauma\, and critical fabulation. She is at work on a second novel.

SUMMARY:Books in Conversation: Jiyoung Hand and Alice Evelyn Yang
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to an evening of books and humanitarian fundraising on October 21st. \nThroughout our publication season\, we noticed our titles in conversation with another: A Beast Slinks Towards Beijing and Honey in the Wound both share themes of anti-imperialism and magical realism as a means to explore intergenerational trauma and the legacy of Japanese colonialism. We wanted to use our books and platform to fundraise for the @rescueorg’s global humanitarian work\, for while our fictional characters remain in history\, the horrors of war they faced continue to affect many people today.

SUMMARY:Na Zhong with Rachel Heng
DESCRIPTION:Na Zhong presents Three\nIn conversation with Rachel Heng\nWine reception to follow \nNa Zhong\, writer\, translator\, and co-founder of Accent Accent\, presents her debut novella Three\, an expansive yet personal story of a prideful teacher\, her husband\, their quietly rebellious daughter\, and a town changed by the breakneck pressures of modernization. “A story of recent China but also a universal tale of young women’s emancipation\, Three is a taut and nuanced excavation of maternal love\, family bond\, and the cost of ambition and change\,” (Yiyun Li\, author of The Book of Goose)—for fans of Annie Ernaux’s The Years. Zhong reads and discusses the book with award-winning novelist Rachel Heng (The Great Reclamation)\, before an audience Q&A and signing.

SUMMARY:ASIAN FEMINIST HORROR Panel: Featuring NEEDLEMOUTH
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special evening as we celebrate Asian Feminism in Horror! \n\nWe’re celebrating K-Ming Chang‘s new novel\, NEEDLEMOUTH\, with a special panel at The Twisted Spine! Join K-Ming Chang\, Catherine Dang (WHAT HUNGER)\, Cassandra Khaw (FIND ME WHERE IT ENDS)\, and Jade Song (CHLORINE) as they discuss modern Asian Feminist perspectives in Horror. Chandra Claypool (@wherethehorrorsgrow) serves as moderator for this special event. \nCan’t make the event? Preorder your signed copy of NEEDLEMOUTH here! \nAbout NEEDLEMOUTH: \nCousins Cindy\, Yangyang\, and Mandy’s hot\, tedious summer unfolds in their grandmother’s hauntingly familiar house. For readers of Akwaeke Emezi and Carmen Maria Machado\, K-Ming Chang has crafted a reimagined coming of age novel that asks: what does it mean to become the monster instead of slaying it \n  \n\nK-Ming Chang is a Lambda Literary Award winner\, a National Book Foundation 5 Under 35 honoree\, and an O. Henry Prize winner. She is the author of Bestiary\, Gods of Want\, Organ Meats\, and a novella titled Cecilia. She has been longlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize\, the VCU Cabell First Novelist Award\, and the Otherwise Award. \nCatherine Dang is the author of the novels Nice Girls and What Hunger. A graduate of the University of Minnesota\, she currently resides in Brooklyn. \nCassandra Khaw is the USA Today bestselling and Bram Stoker Award-winning author of The Library at Hellebore\, Nothing But Blackened Teeth\, The Salt Grows Heavy\, Breakable Things\, and coauthor of The Dead Take the A Train with Richard Kadrey. They are an award-winning game writer. \nJade Song is an artist and the author of novels I Love You Don’t Die and Chlorine\, which was lauded as “visionary and disturbing\,” won the Alex Award and the Writer’s Center First Novel Prize\, and translated into five languages. Her third book\, Ox Ghost Snake Demon\, is a short story collection structured around the Chinese zodiac animals forthcoming January 2027. They pole dance and live with too many books in Brooklyn. \nChandra Claypool is a Queens based reader whose favorite genres are horror and psychological thrillers. Chandra has been consuming horror since the age of eight\, and now proudly reviewing for Cemetery Dance Online and Scream Horror Magazine. You can find her on Instagram and TikTok under @wherethehorrorsgrow\, talking about horror and thriller books and movies. \nEvent guidelines: \nAuthors will be avialble for signing after the panel. \nIf you have any questions about the guidelines or to request accessibility accommodations\, please contact info@twistedspinebooks.com.

SUMMARY:Hilda Shen: Their Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Hilda Shen’s Their Landscapes inaugurates Solo Artist Projects (SAP)\, a MOCA initiative dedicated to presenting compelling artistic voices through one-person exhibitions of new work. The Brooklyn-based artist will present an arrangement of recent ceramic sculptures and prints in the museum’s Cheng Gallery. \nShen’s artistic practice is characterized by an inquisitive scrutiny of nature and an instinct for deconstruction. The forms can appear both ancient and futuristic\, naturally occurring and handmade\, undergoing construction and decay. Their details and motifs open up conversations that cut across post-minimalism\, Chinese landscape painting\, and architectural space. \nAbout the artist \nHilda Shen was born in Minneapolis (1954) and spent much of her childhood in upstate  New York before settling in New York City in the 1970s. Her father grew up in Beijing while her mother was raised in Hangzhou. Shen studied classical music at Oberlin College before shifting to the visual arts. She lives and works in Brooklyn. \nShen’s sculpture\, prints\, drawings\, and installations have been shown throughout the New York City area\, Seattle\, and Beijing\, and most recently in a solo show at Starr Suites in Brooklyn. She has created large installations at WaveHill in the Bronx\, the Tenri Cultural Center in NY\, China2000 in NY\, and the Smithsonian Flushing Town Hall in Queens. She has been an artist in residence at Willapa Bay AIR\, The Bloedel Reserve\, Millay Colony for the Arts\, Yosemite National Park\, and Platte Clove. Her work is in private collections in the United States\, Belgium\, and Beijing. Shen’s work has been reviewed in The New York Times\, The Brooklyn Rail\, ArtAsiaPacific\, and ARTnews. \nAbout Solo Artist Projects \nMOCA’s Solo Artist Projects (SAP) embraces a broad and open-ended exploration of contemporary art\, presenting a wide range of mediums\, practices\, traditions and ideas. It will feature artists of Chinese descent\, living and working in New York City. SAP will be a space for artists with established careers\, emerging artists\, those who live and work in and around Chinatown\, and art historical figures who deserve institutional attention. We will begin accepting submissions for Solo Artists Projects through an open call process in early 2027\, eligible to NYC-based artists of Chinese descent. Details forthcoming on MOCA’s website.

SUMMARY:Coffee & Canvass
DESCRIPTION:Walk the neighborhood with us and help build a real-time database of Chinatown’s storefronts! \nVolunteers who register will receive a code for free co-working (9am–5pm) at the Hub for the day of the event. \nWhy canvass storefronts? \nChinatown has been on the defensive for decades. Critical support often only arrives after it’s too late: After a legacy business closes\, after a block loses its character\, after displacement is irreversible. To change that\, we need to understand what’s happening in real time. \nThrough storefront canvassing\, we can: \n\nTrack closures and openings\, and see what businesses immediately need WtC support\nSpot trends in business types\, and identify commercial corridor shifts – what’s growing\, what’s disappearing\nAdvocate with real evidence\, and give policymakers and media the data they need to support Chinatown’s future\nPreserve culture and legacy by building a historical record of Chinatown’s commercial corridor\n\nThis is a monthly event that will take place every 4th Thursday of the month
