SUMMARY:The Unheard Melody: Music in Chinese Paintings
DESCRIPTION:What sounds are hidden within a painting? \nDrawing from the musical imagery found in A Collection of Song Dynasty Paintings\, The Unheard Melody: Music in Chinese Paintings invites visitors to discover the sounds and stories preserved in these masterpieces. Through three thematic sections—“Harmony Through Music\,” “Elegance and Refinement in Music\,” and “Music in Common Life”—the special showcase reveals the diverse roles of music in Song society\, from court rituals and literati gatherings to everyday life. \nBringing centuries-old paintings into a contemporary setting\, the showcase creates an immersive dialogue between image and sound through high-resolution reproductions\, specially selected ancient music\, AIGC-generated animations\, and interactive displays featuring traditional Chinese instruments such as the guqin\, pipa\, and bianzhong. \nThis special showcase is presented in collaboration with Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture\, Radio\, Television and Tourism and Zhejiang University. \nOpen Hours: Monday – Friday: 10 AM – 5 PM

SUMMARY:Dreamer's Perspective: Through My Lens
DESCRIPTION:For the third year in a row\, the Center for All Abilities (CAA) is hosting a summer arts showcase\, dedicated to platforming the art of neurodivergent and special needs individuals. This year’s show\, “Dreamer’s Perspective: Through My Lens\,” is focused on portraits\, self-portraits\, and reflections of self-identity — how you see yourself\, how you move through the world\, and what makes you who you are. We encourage artists to share work that reflects personal experience\, perception\, and the many ways people navigate and express their inner worlds. This exhibition aims to create a space for thoughtful\, authentic\, and expansive representations of selfhood and lived experience. \nThe Center for All Abilities is a nonprofit based in Manhattan’s Chinatown which serves as a supportive resource for the special needs community\, particularly among Chinese immigrant families. We provide creative arts therapy\, vocational training\, and community-based programming and workshops to support the whole family. \nThis exhibition is in collaboration with Long Story Short Galleries\, which generously provides their venue and support. The show is also in partnership with Extreme Kids and Crew\, a nonprofit which provides a welcoming\, supportive space for young people with disabilities\, their families and friends\, to connect\, create and learn.

SUMMARY:A Stream of Light: Midsummer Afternoon Poetry & Tea
DESCRIPTION:A Stream of Light: Midsummer Afternoon poetry & tea Gathering With Lee Ann Brown @tendtothemoon \, Jiaoyang Li\, and Kevin Ge \nIn 353 CE\, Wang Xizhi gathered with thirty-nine fellow literati at the Orchid Pavilion in Shanyin\, Kuaiji. Seated beside a winding brook\, they set cups of wine adrift on the current\, composing poems wherever the cups came to rest. \nMore than sixteen centuries later\, on a midsummer afternoon at a HEYTEA Tea Bar on New York’s Upper East Side\, a long table winds like a stream\, with fifteen guests seated along its course. Throughout the afternoon\, the music of xiao (箫)\, performed by Kevin Ge on the vertical bamboo flute\, flows continuously\, interwoven with countless moments of improvisation. Like drifting fire\, the music carries the poetry as it meanders through the space. \n矮纸斜行闲作草，晴窗细乳戏分茶\n“Idle brush on narrow paper\, cursive strokes aslant\, Sunlit pane\, pale foam in play — tea-blossoms conjured in a glance” — Lu You\, The First Clear Day After the Rain \nAt either end of the table\, poets Lee Ann Brown and Jiaoyang Li unfold a ritual of poetry\, translation\, and shared attention. Guests are invited to gather loose tea leaves and scatter them freely across sheets of paper. The scattered leaves are then drawn together into imagined forms—perhaps a tangible object\, perhaps an abstract emotion. Wherever the music pauses\, the drifting fire comes to rest. From that point\, a story begins to grow. \nFree tea will be provided by heytea usa.\nThe event is free but RSVP is needed. \nposter designed by @pennyff_fan

SUMMARY:Susan Lee Brooklyn Event for See You at the Sunset
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate See You at the Sunset\, we're hosting a BK event with Susan Lee in conversation with B.K. Borison and Julie Soto.\n\n\nThis ticketed event includes a paperback copy of See You at the Sunset. There will be a book signing to follow. \nCan’t attend the event? Signed books from Susan Lee\, B.K. Borison\, and Julie Soto will be available for Brooklyn pick-up and shipping here. Must order by August 4. \nAbout See You at the Sunset: \nTwo enemies-to-lovers\, one unforgettable summer escape… \nJia Chung is living the dream…until she gets fired from her job\, yet again. With her mom breathing down her neck to move home\, she needs an escape\, fast. When Mimi\, her beloved grandmother\, invites her to spend the summer in Palm Springs\, Jia jumps at the chance. Staying at Sunset Hills Senior Living Community is exactly where a free spirit like Jia can thrive—among people living their best\, sun-soaked\, fun-filled lives. So what if they’re all octogenarians? \nHenry Shin lives by the rules. It’s what overworked corporate lawyers do. They don’t fly off to Palm Springs to help their grandfathers move into a new home. But Dennis is Henry’s only family. How else can Henry make sure he’s settled and safe? The boisterous Zumba classes\, daily happy hours\, and spicy book clubs were a surprise though. And at the center\, leading the charge\, is a bright\, vivacious stunner named Jia Chung. The same face he’d had a one-night stand with a few months back. And the same woman Henry was forced to terminate at his company the morning after. \nAs carefree days turn into hot\, steamy nights\, the chemistry between Henry and Jia ignites. But when the real world beckons\, should what happens at the Sunset stay at the Sunset? \nAbout Susan Lee: \nSusan Lee is the author of the young adult romantic comedies SEOULMATES and THE NAME DROP. Her work has been featured in national outlets such as Buzzfeed\, NPR\, and Pop Sugar. A graduate of UC San Diego\, Susan built a career as an HR executive at some of today’s hottest companies\, until she realized that writing stories was a more impactful and powerful format to change the world. Now she channels her energy into writing happily ever afters for those historically underrepresented in romance. When she is not writing (or painfully procrastinating from writing)\, Susan can be found down the rabbit holes of her many obsessions including listening to Kpop\, binge watching K-dramas\, collecting sneakers\, building mechanical keyboards\, and obsessing over her two adorable\, but ill-behaved chihuahuas. \nAbout B.K. Borison: \nB.K. Borison is the New York Times bestselling author of cozy\, contemporary romances featuring emotionally vulnerable characters and swoon-worthy settings. When she’s not daydreaming about fictional characters doing fictional things\, she’s at home with her family\, more than likely buying books she doesn’t have room for. \nAbout Julie Soto: \nJULIE SOTO is a #1 New York Times bestselling author\, playwright\, and actress originally from Sacramento\, CA. Her musical Generation Me won the 2017 New York Musical Festival’s Best Musical award\, as well as Best Book for her script. She is a musical theater geek\, fandom nerd\, and the author of many spicy fan fictions. Julie now lives in Fort Bragg\, CA\, with her dog\, Charlie. She is probably drinking coffee as you read this.

SUMMARY:What Remains After the Image
DESCRIPTION:Gallery 60 NYC is pleased to present the second solo exhibition by Bing Lu (b. 1999). “what remains after the image” is an ongoing photographic inquiry into intimacy shaped by absence\, displacement and endurance. Built from archival photographs exchanged between Lu and a significant other\, the series approaches photography as an active record through which personal memory can be revisited\, interrupted\, and reformed. “what remains after the image” will be on view from August 13 – 23\, 2026\, at Gallery 60 NYC.

SUMMARY:Town Hall: A Readout of New Data on Health Risks & Air Quality Levels of Chinatown’s Megajail
DESCRIPTION:As the excavation and construction phases of the Manhattan Borough-Based “Megajail” begin\, there are growing concerns in Chinatown of a repeat of the issues present throughout the demolition phase. This time\, the air\, noise\, and vibration issues will persist for several years. \nFollowing a previous town hall with Neighbors United Below Canal\, which examined the health and environmental risks posed by the demolition phase\, we are reconvening the community on Aug 13th from 6 to 8 PM at The Hub to continue the conversation and to look ahead in preparation for the construction phase. Our panel will discuss findings from a recent air quality monitoring study conducted during the megajail’s demolition phase\, and share experiences advocating for improved safety measures and how we can fight together for better solutions. \nLimited seating — RSVP via the link to reserve your spot.

SUMMARY:Film: Kyoko Kagawa Rarities: Little Peach / Anzukko
DESCRIPTION:Asia Society presents Kyoko Kagawa Rarities\, a series of five remarkable films starring the beloved Japanese actress\, in partnership with Anthology Film Archives\, from August 13-16\, 2026. \nDiscovered in a “New Face” contest run by the Tokyo Shimbun in 1949\, Kyoko Kagawa joined upstart film studio Shintoho at age 17\, initiating a steady stream of appearances that would establish in her image an aptitude for projecting brightness and “pure feeling.” Going freelance early in her career in 1952\, she would quickly become a staple of Japanese Cinema’s Golden Age\, becoming immortalized especially as the youngest daughter in the Yasujiro Ozu masterpiece Tokyo Story (1953). With the distinction of working with all of Japan’s “Big Four” directors (Ozu\, Kenji Mizoguchi\, Akira Kurosawa\, and Mikio Naruse) and many more of its greats (Hiroshi Shimizu\, Kozaburo Yoshimura\, Hirokazu Kore-eda\, to name a few)\, and in a career spanning over 70 years and 130 films\, Kagawa’s filmography can read like a roadmap to Japan’s cinema\, her characters meaningful guides in its living history. \nThe greatness in Kagawa’s filmography overflows\, but many of her most widely-circulated roles are in support of other leads or larger ensembles. Composed entirely of imported celluloid\, “Kyoko Kagawa Rarities” looks at the rich history from another vantage point\, and puts Kagawa\, deservedly\, in the center lane. Highlighting discovery and revelation (special mention for the U.S. premiere of Farewell to the Highland Station)\, and postulating a new set of classics\, the series looks to give fresh color to this dear and familiar face. —Joseph Eusebio \n“I am truly delighted and grateful that audiences in New York will have the opportunity to see this selection of films in which I appeared as part of this special retrospective. New York holds a special place in my heart\, as I once lived there for about three years because of my husband’s work\, and I remember the city with great fondness. I was still young in some of these films\, but I hold deep gratitude for the exceptional source material and for the guidance of the distinguished directors with whom I was fortunate enough to work. It is thanks to them that these films endure and can continue to be met by audiences today. I hope that you will enjoy watching the different ways in which each of the women in these films chooses to live her life. “ —Kyoko Kagawa\, June 2026 \nNote: The first film in this series\, Mikio Naruse’s Little Peach (Anzukko)\, will screen at Anthology Film Archives on August 13\, 2026. Click here for information and tickets.  \nGuest curated by Joseph Eusebio and Akinaru Rokkaku. \nProgrammed with support from the Japan Foundation\, New York.

SUMMARY:Film: Farewell to the Highland Station
DESCRIPTION:Asia Society presents Kyoko Kagawa Rarities\, a series of five remarkable films starring the beloved Japanese actress\, in partnership with Anthology Film Archives\, from August 13-16\, 2026. \nFarewell to the Highland Station\nNobuo Nakagawa\, Japan\, 1951\, 35mm\, 76 min.\nIn Japanese with English subtitles. \nA botanical researcher (Michitaro Mizushima) visits a tuberculosis sanatorium in the highlands. Collecting plants in the area for his research\, he falls in love with the nurse in white (Kyoko Kagawa). \nProduced quickly to capitalize on the massive success of Minoru Obata’s hit song of the same title\, within the genre trappings of the “kayo eiga” (song film)\, Farewell to the Highland Station elevates to the sublime under the masterful direction of Nobuo Nakagawa. Known in most histories exclusively for his classics of the horror genre\, legendary critic Shiguehiko Hasumi has explained that Nakagawa is indistinguishable without this film. Something similar could also be said about Kagawa: that if this film were known\, her role in it as the young nurse would likely be amongst her most iconic. \nA revelatory film\, newly subtitled on the occasion of this series\, for what is believed to be its U.S. premiere. —Joseph Eusebio \n35mm print courtesy of the National Film Archive of Japan. \nA limited amount of complimentary tickets will be available to NYC college students with ID at the box office on the day of the screening.

SUMMARY:Book Launch for Catherine Cho's The Devoted with Vanessa Chan
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a release event with acclaimed author Catherine Cho\, discussing her new novel The Devoted. Moderating this discussion is internationally bestselling author Vanessa Chan. This event will be hosted in the Strand Book Store’s 3rd floor Rare Book Room at 828 Broadway on 12th Street. \nIn this emotionally transportive literary debut about family and fate\, a young Korean woman becomes entrenched in an infamous crime organization—and the dangerous world she once sought to escape. \n\n\n\nRaised in Hong Kong by their Korean grandmother in a quiet village\, Eunha and her brother Solomon live a sheltered life. Their father is a Dragon Head\, a leader within the infamous criminal organization of the Triads. While their beloved grandmother does her best to shield the children from the constant hum of violence and fear that surrounds their father and his world\, Eunha only has Solomon and their one permitted companion\, a boy named Kai\, for company. \nBut as Eunha grows up and marries into a supposedly respectable Hong Kong family\, the veneer of her careful life begins to crack. When her young son is kidnapped\, she is cast into the city’s criminal underground and back into the orbit of Kai\, now a Dragon Head himself. \nWill Eunha finally give in to the life she has strived so hard to rise above or was her future always fated?\nThe Devoted is at once a sweeping family drama\, a moving account of forbidden love\, and a story about a woman’s determination to choose her own destiny. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCatherine Cho is the acclaimed author of The Devoted and the memoir Inferno. She was shortlisted for The Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year 2020 and shortlisted for the Jhalak Prize. Catherine also runs her own literary agency Paper Literary. Originally from the United States\, she now lives with her family in London. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVanessa Chan is the Malaysian author of internationally bestselling The Storm We Made\, a Good Morning America Book Club Pick\, BBC Radio 2 Book Club pick\, and New York Times Editor’s Choice. SUMMARY:Chinatown '75 Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:CHINATOWN ‘75 is an interactive walking tour that tells the story of the police brutality case that rocked Chinatown and the protest movement that arose in its wake. In May of 1975\, 25\,000 protesters marched from Chinatown to City Hall to demand justice for the beating of Peter Yew. \nBased on archival research and oral histories with march participants\, CHINATOWN ‘75 traces the route of the original Peter Yew protest march to paint an in-depth portrait of a transformative moment in Chinatown’s history.
