SUMMARY:Amader Dawat\, Apicha CHC\, DRUM Presents: "Elijah" (Screening & Discussion)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of “Elijah”\, a coming-out story of a Bengali-American trans man. Followed by a Q+A with filmmaker\, Razid Season!\n\n\nSypnosis: A South Asian Muslim taxi driver faces the reality that the American Dream may never be his. Grueling hours\, rude customers\, a collapse in medallion values\, and suicides among fellow drivers continually chip away at his hope for the future. Against this backdrop\, crisis spills into his family as his child comes out as a transgender man. His relationship with his transgender son challenges his past views on LGBTQ issues\, forcing him to confront prejudice in his community to protect the child he loves.\n\nWe’ll be screening this beautiful film\, followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker\, Razid. Refreshments will be provided. \nAbout Us:\nRazid Season: Born in Abu Dhabi & raised in Dhaka\, Razid Season is a Bengali filmmaker based in New York. He is the founder of a non-profit\, Image Maker Films Inc. Besides\, he has worked as a freelance project evaluator for POV. He was an invited jury at the Plural+ Youth Film Festival 2022\, run by UNAOC and IOM. He has received several awards for his films\, including the Lawrence and Danielle Nyman award (2018 & 2019)\, the Best Director award from SAIFF 2020\, Honourable Mention from Columbus Jewish Film Festival 2020\, and ISA Los Angeles. His films have premiered at the 43rd Asian American Film Festival in New York\, the Buffalo International Film Festival\, the Williamsburg International Film Festival\, and the Los Angeles Polish Film Festival. His film premiered on CUNY TV\, Yiddishkayt Initiative\, and The Archeological Channel’s web streaming. His film Kaddish ranked as one of the top 10 independent short fiction works by Cinema Daily US. Razid is interested in making films that deal with humanitarian issues\, and he wants his films to be a tool to advocate for those underprivileged communities whose voices are not heard in the mainstream media. \nAmader Dawat is a Bangladeshi and Bengali queer and trans led grassroots collective based in NYC. Rooted in radical care and the tradition of dawaats (gatherings)\, we aim to foster community\, connection\, and empowerment by standing with all oppressed people. We strive to build celebratory and safe spaces by synergizing arts\, culture\, and political education. Our core mission is queer liberation–we firmly believe no one is free until we are all free. \nApicha Community Health Center is a Federally Qualified Health Center. Their mission is to provide high quality\, whole person\, and compassionate care delivered in a welcoming manner. \nDesis Rising Up and Moving is a multi-generational\, membership based organization of over 1\,800 low-wage South Asian immigrant workers\, youth\, and families organizing for social and economic justice in New York City. DRUM organizes low-income\, largely Muslim\, undocumented South Asian immigrant families and youth through base-building and membership services\, leadership development\, campaigns for policy change\, and movement building.

SUMMARY:JEST ASIANS - Asian comedy night by Humor Section (Lab Edition)
DESCRIPTION:An intimate Asian comedy night in NYC by Humor Section\n\n\n\nJEST ASIANS: Lab Edition is the small-room\, experimental sister show of JEST ASIANS — All-Pro Asian Comedy Showcase\, first co-presented by Humor Section and Asia Society New York. \nWhile the Asia Society edition brought a polished lineup of top Asian comedians to one of NYC’s leading cultural institutions\, the Lab Edition creates a more intimate and playful space at PARTEA LAB — a room for fresh jokes\, new ideas\, and close-up audience energy. But “experimental” does not mean random: every show is still carefully curated\, featuring comedians with strong voices\, real credits\, and material worth developing. \n\n\n\nThe show is produced by Humor Section\, a comedy brand founded in Beijing in 2013 and now based in New York. As one of the early forces in China’s stand-up comedy scene\, Humor Section helped build a platform for a new generation of comedians\, and now continues its mission in the U.S.: advancing Asian comedians on the global stage. \n\n\n\n\n\nLineup to be updated: \nTony Chou (Host & Producer) \nTony Chou is one of the very few native Chinese comedians touring the world performing stand-up in English. Based in New York\, he has performed across the U.S.\, China\, the U.K.\, Australia\, and Southeast Asia. He is the co-founder of The Humor Section\, a comedy platform launched in Beijing by Des Bishop in 2013\, and previously co-hosted the hit late-night show The Vicious Liang Huan Show. His work has been featured by major media including the BBC\, CNN\, The Atlantic and more. \nPast JEST ASIANS — All-Pro Asian Comedy Showcase at Asia Society New York

SUMMARY:Serica Storytellers: Architecture Serving Neighborhoods & Memories
DESCRIPTION:The Serica Initiative presents an intimate evening of conversation with two of the most influential voices in contemporary architecture: Billie Tsien and Calvin Tsao. \nJoin Billie Tsien\, one of the most influential architects of our time and co-designer of the Obama Presidential Center\, for an intimate evening exploring how architecture can serve people\, preserve memory\, and shape the future of our cities. In conversation with Calvin Tsao\, a leading voice at the intersection of architecture\, art\, and culture\, this gathering invites you into a rare dialogue on the values that guide the built world around us. \nSet in the heart of Chinatown and in partnership with Welcome To Chinatown—a neighborhood layered with history\, resilience\, and transformation—this conversation moves beyond buildings as objects and into architecture as an act of care. Together\, Tsien and Tsao will reflect on the role of design in sustaining communities\, the tension between speed and thoughtfulness in an era of rapid change\, and the quiet responsibility architects carry in shaping how people live\, gather\, and belong. \nBut this evening isn’t just about listening—it’s about participating. \nIn the second half of the program\, attendees will be invited to share a small but meaningful detail from New York City—a material\, object\, or everyday moment that makes them feel welcome or at home. These reflections will become the foundation for a collective conversation on how “small evidence” can inform architecture that is more human\, more responsive\, and more enduring. \nExpect a thoughtful\, engaged audience spanning architects\, artists\, students\, entrepreneurs\, and members of the Chinatown community—creating a space where professional insight meets lived experience. Delicious local bites\, wine\, and beverages will be provided to all guests to enjoy throughout the event. \nAgenda:\n5:30–6:00 PM Arrival\, light refreshments\, networking\n6:15–7:00 PM Billie Tsien in conversation with Calvin Tsao\n7:00–8:00 PM Audience Q&A + community engagement activity \nAdmission is open to the public with a suggested donation of $1 or more\, ensuring the evening remains accessible while supporting Serica’s mission to convene meaningful conversations across communities. \nCome for the ideas. Stay for the exchange. Leave seeing the city a little differently. \nThis event is made possible due to our partnership with Welcome to Chinatown and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. \nThe Serica Initiative thanks the New York State Council on the Arts for the generous grant support. The opinions\, results\, findings and/or interpretation of data contained therein are the responsibility of the Serica Initiative and do not necessarily represent the opinions\, interpretations or policy of the State.

SUMMARY:W.O.W. Project: Storefront Origins\, Arts Activism\, and the Worlds We Build
DESCRIPTION:In this opening conversation\, Mei Lum and Diane Wong will revisit the origins of W.O.W—from their early kitchen table conversations to its evolution into a community arts initiative that centers women\, queer\, non-binary\, and trans Asian youth as stewards of Chinatown’s creative culture. Grounded in personal stories and collective memory\, this dialogue invites us to pause and to consider how spaces like W.O.W. speak to the possibility of a neighborhood defined by people rather than by profit\, where value is measured through cultural continuity and collective belonging rather than speculative capital. The conversation also opens up questions about the tensions and possibilities of doing cultural work in a moment shaped by ongoing struggles over land\, safety\, and displacement—and how we might imagine the next decade together. \nThe conversation will be moderated by W.O.W.’s youth leaders and alumni. Whether you’ve been part of W.O.W. since the beginning or are just getting to know the work\, we welcome you to join us for an evening of reflection\, celebration\, and community.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Ed Young’s Bright Worlds
DESCRIPTION:For over 60 years\, Ed Young (1931–2023) invigorated the world of children’s books through intimate storytelling\, inventive artistry\, and potent emotionality. This first U.S. retrospective features original artwork from 15 of his most significant projects—focusing on works drawn from his personal story and Chinese folktales—alongside a selection of his sketchbooks\, family photos\, and personal effects. \nYoung achieved distinction as a beloved storyteller and illustrator who challenged younger audiences with pictorial and moral complexity. He was a towering figure in children’s literature\, reaching wide audiences while earning the field’s top honors. His retelling of the Chinese “Little Red Riding Hood\,” Lon Po Po\, introduced generations of children to Chinese folklore and won the Caldecott Medal; he also received two Caldecott Honors for earlier works. Across his career\, he garnered numerous accolades\, including multiple selections for The New York Times’ “10 Best Illustrated Children’s Books” list. \nThe exhibition traces Young’s family life in Shanghai\, where he was the fourth youngest of five children. As a teenager\, he and his brother were sent to live in Hong Kong to flee the civil war in China. He immigrated to America for college\, eventually earning an art degree from the ArtCenter School in Los Angeles\, and then moved to New York. “I set out with $20 borrowed money in my pocket to bet my life in New York City\,” he wrote. After being laid off from an advertising studio\, he submitted sketches to children’s book publisher Ursula Nordstrom\, who hired him to illustrate The Mean Mouse and Other Mean Stories (1962)\, launching a career that would span over 100 books. \nHis most memorable projects were deeply personal. Ed Young’s Bright Worlds guides viewers through key moments of his life and oeuvre with original artwork from The House Baba Built (2011)\, about his childhood in Japan-occupied Shanghai; Voices of the Heart (1997)\, exploring Chinese culture through the relationship between writing\, image and his lifelong tai chi practice; My Mei Mei (2006)\, on adopting his daughters; and Bright World (2024)\, a book published posthumously in China\, meditating on the cyclical nature of life. \n“So many of us grew up on Ed Young’s art and storytelling\,” said Herb Tam\, MOCA’s Chief Curator. “This exhibition will reveal what went into crafting masterworks of the children’s book form. Visitors will be enchanted by his fluent handling of media—from pastel and cut paper to pen\, ink\, and collage—and inspired by his story as a resourceful immigrant striving to make his mark in a creative field.” \n“As a father of three\, I’ve seen firsthand how children’s books shape the way we see the world\,” said Michael Lee\, MOCA’s President. “The imagery and storytelling stay with us—they become part of our family conversations\, our imaginations\, and even the way we share stories later in life. It’s a special honor to explore the life and mind of Ed Young\, whose work has inspired generations. Through this exhibition\, we not only celebrate his extraordinary achievements but also revisit how deeply his art was shaped by his journey as a Chinese American—reflecting his early life in China and the graceful balance he found as a lifelong practitioner of tai chi.” \nEd Young’s Bright Worlds is part of MOCA’s Luminaries for America250\, a yearlong celebration of Chinese American historymakers at the Semiquincentennial. SUMMARY:Book: Reciprocity: Black and Asian Feminist Solidarity with the Earth
DESCRIPTION:Reciprocity: Black and Asian Feminist Solidarity with the Earth will create a space dedicated to illuminating\, unpacking\, and strengthening understandings of cross-racial feminist connections as a tool for environmental and food justice. You will explore hands-on practices and healing modalities\, from gardening and composting to mutual aid and herbalism\, with contributors of the anthology We Are Each Other’s Liberation: Black and Asian Feminist Solidarities (Haymarket Books\, 2025) and other practitioners in these spaces in order to facilitate deeper engagement within these intersections. The program will include a reading from the book\, panel discussion\, and nature walk. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nSpeakers include:\nRosa Bordallo is a farmer advocate\, musician\, and native of Guåhan in the Mariånas. She currently resides in upstate NY on unceded land of the Oneida and Kanienʼkehá꞉ka peoples. Rosa credits her Chamorro upbringing for her commitment to political and cultural agitation and to Indigenous sovereignty and decolonial futures. Her essay\, “The Breadfruit Does Not Fall Far from the Tree” appears in the anthology\, We Are Each Other’s Liberation: Black and Asian Feminist Solidarities (Haymarket Books). She has released several albums and EPs as a solo artist and previously wrote and performed music as her alter ego\, Manett. \nEman Rashid is a Palestinian-American educator who teaches about Native American and endangered plants and wildlife. After earning a B.A in Environmental Science from Northwestern University with a research concentration in pollination biology\, Taylor craved connection with land that cracked open the restrictive parameters set by western academia and offered space for reciprocity\, remembering\, and collaboration. Through her land practices\, Taylor aims to tell the stories of her lineage\, create safety in holistic care spaces\, combat the oppressive structures\, and support community in finding respite in the land once again. \nPista (any pronouns) is a queer South Asian herbalist\, educator and organizer currently based on occupied Lenapehoking land in so-called Queens\, NY. After many years of working in the tech industry\, Pista began composting at the start of the pandemic to re-center mutuality & living connections. Pista works now to compost systems\, beliefs & ideas that no longer serve communities in order to rebirth futures of greater reciprocity and care through connecting ancestral Earthwork with abolition. \nThis event is hosted by late-bloomer.info\, a community gardener\, cultural organizer\, and co-editor of the anthology We Are Each Other’s Liberation. There will be a limited number of copies of the anthology available for sliding scale donation ($10-25 suggested). \nAccessibility Notes:\nThis event is being held at an outdoor community space with uneven grounds that are not easily traversable with wheelchairs or other walking devices. There no on-site bathroom\, and the nearest publicly accessible restroom is at a grocery store on the corner. Please plan accordingly and practice recommended public health measures including masking (especially those with respiratory or immune issues)\, testing negative pre-event\, and staying home if you feel unwell or have symptoms. \nThis project is a part of the What Can We Do? artist grant program\, presented by Asian American Arts Alliance (A4) and is supported by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. Special thanks to Council Members Christopher Marte and Sandra Ung. SUMMARY:Conference: The New Asian NYC: Mobilization\, Grassroots Power & Pluralistic Futures
DESCRIPTION:Exploring grassroots power & Asian American futures in NYC after Zohran Mamdani’s historic election.\n\n\nThe recent election of Zohran Mamdani—the city’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor—marks a historic shift in New York City’s political landscape. This victory stands not only as a milestone for AAPI and Muslim representation but as a testament to the power of grassroots\, working-class organizing. While often characterized as the “Mamdani Moment\,” this campaign’s trajectory from just 3% in early polling offers a profound case study in the collective “social technology” of door-to-door engagement and the merging of diverse identities. \nBuilding from this watershed moment\, AAARI’s 2026 symposium\, The New Asian NYC: Mobilization\, Grassroots Power & Pluralistic Futures\, invites a deeper conversation about what such victories reveal—how they reshape understandings of Asian American identity\, highlight the intersections of class and race\, and chart evolving strategies for civic engagement in an increasingly polarized era.
