SUMMARY:MOCA TALKS – Rock Springs Chinatown and the 1885 Chinese Massacre
DESCRIPTION:Discover daily life in Rock Springs Chinatown before and after the 1885 Chinese Massacre in this archaeological talk.\n\n\n$10 General Admission | $5 Student and Senior Admission | Free for MOCA Members \nThe Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) invites you to an insightful presentation with Laura W. Ng\, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Grinnell College and a historical archaeologist specializing in late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Chinese migrants and their transpacific lives. \nRailroad work and coal mining brought Chinese laborers to rural southwestern Wyoming starting in the 1870s. The Rock Springs Chinatown was constructed by the Union Pacific Coal Company as part of a racialized landscape intended to segregate Asian immigrant coal miners. At the same time\, Chinese laborers were scapegoated for white unemployment\, which culminated in the passage of the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act. Newspapers emphasized that Chinese laborers were foreigners because they were “heathens” and sent remittances to China. Within this context\, a fight broke out between white and Chinese coal miners in Mine #6 and white miners led a mob that brutally attacked Chinatown and its residents. The mob burned most of the Chinatown structures down and at least 28 Chinese were murdered. \nDrawing on the burn layer from the massacre as a time marker\, and in collaboration with Chinese American descendants\, Professor Ng will discuss how archaeological excavations provide tangible insight into silenced histories of Chinese immigrant labor\, transpacific migration\, and racial exclusion. \nAbout Laura W. Ng \nLaura W. Ng is Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Grinnell College in Iowa. She is a historical archaeologist who researches late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Chinese migrants and their transpacific lives. Laura is currently investigating archaeologies of racism and transnationalism at the Evanston and Rock Springs Chinatowns in rural Southwestern Wyoming in collaboration with Dr. Dudley Gardner and Chinese American descendants. She received her PhD in Anthropology from Stanford University. \n\n\n\nNot a MOCA member yet? SUMMARY:In-Store: Lana Lin: The Autobiography of H. Lan Thao Lam w/ Monique Truong (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:“Lyrical prose\, palpable love\, and formal audacity coalesce to make this a must-read.” —Publishers Weekly starred review\n\nThe event will also be livestreamed for free here: https://youtube.com/live/8_fAjTk-Rfg\n\n\nEvent guidelines: \n\nEach ticket will include either a copy of the featured book or a $10 Books Are Magic gift card.\nAdditional copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event.\nA signing will follow the talk.\nHome address is collected for contact tracing purposes; it will not be used otherwise.\nThe event will also be livestreamed for free here: https://youtube.com/live/8_fAjTk-Rfg\nAs a reminder: If you are not feeling well\, please do not come to the event\, even if you have a ticket; email us and we’ll work it out.\n\nIf you have any questions regarding these guidelines or to request accessibility accommodations\, please contact eventhelp@booksaremagic.net. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Asian American Writers’ Workshop. \nSituated between memoir\, social criticism\, and conceptual art\, The Autobiography of H. Lan Thao Lam is an incisive response to a modernist classic and an affecting exploration of the poetics and politics of our times. \nIn her 1933 The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas\, Gertrude Stein invented a new literary form by narrating her own story from the perspective of her partner\, blurring the lines between portrait and self-portrait. Almost a century later\, experimental filmmaker and artist Lana Lin has resurrected Stein’s project to tell a different story of queer love\, life\, and artistic collaboration. \nAt heart a candid chronicle of her partner Lan Thao’s life journey from Việt Nam during the war\, and her own troubled history as a gender-queer Taiwanese American\, Lin draws in subjects as varied as photography\, cancer\, tropical fruit\, 9/11\, and Eve Sedgwick’s eyeglasses\, weaving an intimate landscape of living that is also a critical investigation of race and gender. \nLana Lin is a writer\, artist\, and filmmaker based in New York and Connecticut. She is the author of the book Freud’s Jaw and Other Lost Objects: Fractured Subjectivity in the Face of Cancer and film and video works including The Cancer Journals Revisited. Her various works and collaborative projects (with Lan Thao Lam as “Lin + Lam”) have exhibited at festivals and art and educational spaces throughout the world\, including the Museum of Modern Art\, Whitney Museum\, and New Museum\, New York; The National Gallery of Art\, Washington\, D.C.; Gasworks\, London; the Taiwan International Documentary Festival and Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute\, New Taipei City; Arko Art Center\, Korean Arts Council\, Seoul; and the 2018 Busan Biennale. Having had three years of psychoanalytic training before dropping out\, she sometimes still dreams of becoming a psychoanalyst one day. \nBorn in Saigon\, South Vietnam\, Monique Truong came to the U.S. as a refugee in 1975. She’s a novelist\, essayist\, children’s book author\, and librettist. Her novels are The Sweetest Fruits (Viking\, 2019)\, Bitter in the Mouth (Random House\, 2010)\, and the national bestseller The Book of Salt (Houghton Mifflin\, 2003)\, with German translations published by C.H. Beck. Her children’s picture book Mai’s Áo Dài (Atheneum/Caitlyn Dlouhy Books\, 2025) is co-written with Thai Nguyen and illustrated by Dung Ho. A graduate of Yale College and Columbia Law School\, she’s received a Guggenheim Fellowship\, Hodder Fellowship\, American Academy of Arts and Letters’ Rosenthal Family Foundation Award\, Young Lions Fiction Award\, Bard Fiction Prize\, and John Dos Passos Prize for Literature\, among other honors.

SUMMARY:Wing on Wo Presents: Rising Lotus a Collection by Michelle Wen
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of ‘Rising Lotus\,’ a collection of imaginative ceramic jars by artist Michelle Wen on Friday\, October 3rd // 6-8pm.\n\n\nWing on Wo is thrilled to present ‘Rising Lotus\,’ a collection of imaginative ceramic jars by artist Michelle Wen. Inspired by her childhood visits to Chinatown\, Michelle creates a collection that not only breathes new life into the shop’s apothecary history but also uses the jar as a vessel to transport us to an otherworldly landscape of a lotus garden. This collection and its meticulously crafted ink painting and sculptural details are a love letter to Michelle’s family\, honoring her grandfather’s stories of a heavenly landscape of unfathomable beauty\, her father’s legacy of Chinese ink painting\, and Michelle’s mom and grandmother’s matriarchal power that continue to fuel her to keep expanding her practice. We are so thrilled to be sharing this work at W.O.W. as part of our ongoing Centennial programming <3 Join us for the opening on Friday\, October 3 from 6-8pm! \nABOUT MICHELLE WEN \n@michelle_wen_artist \nMichelle Wen is a ceramic artist and instructor born and raised in Brooklyn\, New York\, and received her BFA from Pratt Institute. An important aspect of Michelle’s practice is community engagement\, as she has been teaching arts and ceramics at a non-profit in Bed-Stuy for eight years. Michelle also continues to hold fundraisers to support humanitarian\, environmental\, and social justice causes by raffling off her ceramics. Michelle is honored to be showing her work at Wing on Wo\, as Chinatown still plays a significant role in her life and remains a place of gathering and sentimental value for her family. \nMichelle’s work has been featured in Vanity Fair and Pottery Making Illustrated. She has collaborated with the Brooklyn Nets\, the YES Network\, Asian Women Giving Circle\, and CUNY TV. Featured exhibitions include The Brooklyn Museum\, the Montclair Art Museum\, and the iidrr Gallery in Chinatown.

SUMMARY:Photo Exhibit: Xyza Cruz Bacani: The Diaspora is Home
DESCRIPTION:Picnic\, 2022. Courtesy of the artist. \nOctober 4 – November 2\, 2025\nFlux IV\, 56-21 2nd Street\nOpen Saturdays\, 12:00 – 6:00 pm or by appointment \nFlux Factory is pleased to present The Diaspora is Home\, a solo exhibition by Xyza Cruz Bacani. This exhibition presents photographs of the Asian American diaspora\, from portraits in living rooms to scenes of community gatherings\, food traditions\, and religious practices. Installed within a living room environment\, Bacani’s work evokes belonging and cultural continuity\, transforming the gallery into a space of warmth\, reflection\, and collective memory. The Diaspora is Home runs from October 4 – November 2\, 2025 with an opening reception on Saturday\, October 4\, accompanied by the presence of community members who appear in the photographs\, sharing food they have prepared\, and a tea demonstration by Anna Ye. \nThe Diaspora is Home invites you into the lived experience of immigrants in Queens. When we leave our motherlands\, we take more than our belongings. We bring our languages\, flavors\, the strength of our ancestors\, and resilience forged in hardship. Leaving is never simple. Arriving is a different story. We carry the pains of separations; traumas that we can still taste in our mouths. We learned to find joy in our small victories\, pride in our survival\, and accept the scars of migration as beauty in building anew. This exhibition traces these dualities: joy and struggle\, memory and reinvention. \nDeveloped through visits to homes and close engagement with community members\, Bacani’s works reflect an intimate process of trust and reciprocity. The accompanying living room installation mirrors the spaces in which the photographs were taken\, creating a familiar and welcoming environment. By inviting visitors to gather\, sit\, and reflect\, the installation transforms Flux IV into a site of hospitality and shared presence\, underscoring the centrality of home within the diasporic experience. Each work in The Diaspora is Home speaks to the search for home\, the courage to remain visible\, and the tenderness of community. In today’s world\, where immigrants are portrayed negatively and our existence is questioned daily\, we choose to tell our own stories. \nJoin us on this journey. Bring your own stories. Together\, we honor the spaces between us\, find  our home in the diaspora where kindness grows\, hope lives\, and celebrate our undeniable existence. \nXyza Cruz Bacani: The Diaspora is Home is presented as part of the artist’s 2025 NYSCA Fellowship. Special thanks to Fujifilm US\, Martin Kaminer\, and the Tim Hermann Charitable Family Foundation for their support. \nAbout the Artist\nXyza Cruz Bacani (b. 1987\, the Philippines) is an award-winning interdisciplinary artist and writer based in New York. SUMMARY:Panel: San Francisco Opera: The Monkey King (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:This program features a unique public affairs arts conversation between Chinese-born composer Huang Ruo and Matthew Shilvock\, who is in his tenth season as San Francisco Opera’s general director. \nThe Monkey King (猴王悟空)\, by Huang Ruo and American librettist/playwright David Henry Hwang\, conducted by Carolyn Kuan\, is of topical interest as an action hero story with moments of peace and reflection. The Monkey King centers around the mythic hero from China’s classic novel Journey to the West. A monkey born from a stone becomes the ruler of the monkeys and challenges the gods of the seas and heavens in a bid for immortality. SF Opera is producing the world premiere\, performed in English and Chinese\, uniting the disciplines of opera\, dance and puppetry. \nThe Monkey King‘s blended production is not your grandmothers’ traditional opera! It’s also a 2024 blockbuster video game Black Myth: Wukong. \nMusical theatre audiences are familiar with Broadway’s acclaimed Tony award winning M. Butterfly team\, which was also led by Ruo and American librettist/playwright David Henry Whang and conductor Carolyn Kuan. \nDescribing a technique he calls “dimensionalism\,” Ruo uses a “musical voice which draws equal inspiration from Chinese folk\, Western avant-garde\, rock and jazz (Mimakos\, 2011).” Of Monkey King\, he says\, “In our new opera\, which blends cultural traditions with a spectacular multidisciplinary production\, I hope to bring this Eastern superhero to life and shine a hopeful light that will always appear in any turbulent time.” \nShilvock announced that The Monkey King\, opening November 14 at War Memorial Opera House\, reflects SF Opera’s commitment to global storytelling that makes a difference. He notes that “It’s indicative of artistry that affirms the Bay Area as one of the great cultural centers of the world.” \nOur moderator will be Cole Thomason-Redus\, vice chair of the Arts Member-led Forum\, and educational content curator for San Francisco Opera.
