SUMMARY:Panel: Is Deglobalization Inevitable?
DESCRIPTION:Is the current movement towards deglobalization just part of a cycle that has had its ups and downs\, or are we in a structural movement towards a more permanent isolation of countries from a trade and economic point of view? \nThe topic of deglobalization has never been more prominent than it is today. The topic has been elevated in importance for some time now as we have seen dramatic changes in country trade practices\, relative manufacturing and service strengths\, economic trends\, and political positions. The tariff situation brought about by the U.S. recently has made it even more consequential today. \nNobel Prize-winning economist Professor Joseph Stiglitz will open with a fireside chat on the evening’s central issue\, followed by a lively debate between two leading experts: Professor Walden Bello\, credited with coining the term “deglobalization\,” and Professor Edward Ashbee. They’ll present opposing views in a traditional debate format—opening statements\, rebuttals\, and closing remarks. \nThe audience will vote electronically before and after the debate to see how opinions shift. \nIs Deglobalization Inevitable?\nTuesday\, September 23 | Online\n5:30 PM ET Keynote | 6:15 PM ET Debate

SUMMARY:Understanding AI with Data & Society | The Environmental Costs of AI Are Surging—What Now? (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Researcher Tamara Kneese speaks with environmental justice researcher Sanjana Paul and critical social scientist Jasmine McNealy about the environmental toll AI development is taking on local water supplies\, energy systems\, and communities around the world. \nThis event will take place online and in person at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library on the 7th Floor \nArtificial intelligence technologies run on powerful computers that require vast amounts of energy\, water\, and critical minerals. As AI use grows\, so does its environmental footprint. Yet there is little consensus on how to assess and address the technology’s toll on the climate before irreparable damage is done. How can we understand the impact AI data centers have on communities and the environment? How can we ensure that communities are able to use empirical data about those impacts to fight back? \nABOUT THE SPEAKERS \nTamara Kneese is the director of Data & Society’s Climate\, Technology\, and Justice program. Previously\, she led Data & Society’s Algorithmic Impacts Lab (AIMLab). Tamara’s research juxtaposes histories of computing and automation with ethnographies of platform labor. Her first book\, Death Glitch: How Techno-Solutionism Fails Us in This Life and Beyond\, was published by Yale University Press in 2023. \nJasmine McNealy is an attorney\, critical public interest technologist\, and social scientist who studies emerging media & technology with a view toward influencing law and policy. An internationally recognized scholar\, her research is interdisciplinary\, centered at the intersection of media\, technology\, policy\, and law. Of particular focus are the areas of privacy\, surveillance\, and data governance and emphasizing technological and the impacts on marginalized and vulnerable communities. She is a professor at the University of Florida where she directs the Infrastructure for Communities\, Ecology for Data Hub (ICED Hub)\, which annually hosts the Rural x AI + Policy Workshop. She is also Faculty Associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. \nSanjana Paul is an engineer\, environmental justice researcher\, and systems thinker working at the intersection of infrastructure\, climate\, and technology. She is a PhD student at MIT\, where her research focuses on renewable energy\, energy justice\, and the electric grid. She is the co-founder of Rooted Futures Lab\, a research and action collective advancing environmental justice in technology\, and Earth Hacks\, a nonprofit harnessing hackathons as a form of climate action. Her work has ranged from atmospheric science software engineering at NASA to passing decarbonization policy at the local level. She holds a BS in electrical engineering and physics\, and a Master’s in City Planning from MIT.

DESCRIPTION:Join acclaimed biographers Jeff Chang (Water Mirror Echo: Bruce Lee and the Making of Asian America) and Katie Gee Salisbury (Not Your China Doll: The Wild and Shimmering Life of Anna May Wong) for a timely and powerful conversation about two iconic trailblazers who redefined what it meant to be Asian American in the reels and in real life. From Hollywood’s golden age to the birth of martial arts cinema and into the age of Asian America\, Anna May Wong and Bruce Lee fought to claim their stories—and helped shape the ongoing struggle for visibility\, pride\, and power in popular culture. \nModerated by Ed Park\, Pulitzer Prize finalist and author of Same Bed\, Different Dreams\, this event explores the legacy of these stars\, the barriers they broke\, and how their influence still reverberates in today’s Asian American “renaissance.” \nPhoto of Bruce Lee courtesy of the Bruce Lee Family Archive

SUMMARY:Education Workshop Webinar – Immigration
DESCRIPTION:APIDAs were once excluded from entering the U.S. The Civil Rights Movement spearheaded by Black Americans led to the revision of discriminatory laws including immigration laws—leading to the passage of the Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1965. Today\, APIDAs are the fastest growing population in the U.S. This workshop shows activities for students to examine the cause and effect of various events and policies in U.S. history. This workshop also shows how Black American and APIDA histories are interconnected. Students will learn about cross-cultural solidarity. \nThis workshop is free for educators and will take place virtually. It will be facilitated by Laura Ouk.

SUMMARY:Theater: From Trinity to Trinity
DESCRIPTION:Amaterasu Za\, New York’s only bilingual Japanese-English theater company\, presents the New York premiere of From Trinity to Trinity\, a powerful one-woman play based on the autobiographical writings of Kyoko Hayashi\, a survivor of the Nagasaki atomic bombing. The play follows Hayashi’s 1999 pilgrimage to the Trinity Site in New Mexico\, where the bomb that changed her life was first tested.\n\nPerformed by acclaimed actress Ako (Shogun\, God Said This\, Snow Falling on Cedars)\, this one-woman play is adapted from an English translation of Hayashi’s book by Eiko Otake (of Eiko & Koma). Ako’s performance—enhanced by evocative imagery and soundscape — offers an intimate yet universal meditation on trauma\, resilience\, remembrance\, and the stories nations tell themselves.\nOn August 9th\, 1945\, fourteen-year-old schoolgirl Kyoko Hayashi was sent to work at the Mitsubishi Munitions Factory and miraculously survived the blast only to endure radiation sickness and its painful after-effects for the next 73 years. Hayashi started writing in 1962 and became a leading literary voice for the Hibakusha\, those who survived the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. She published dozens of books\, articles\, stories\, and poems\, and won multiple literary awards. \nHer moving autobiographical short work\, From Trinity To Trinity\, about her 1999 pilgrimage to Trinity Site in New Mexico\, where the atomic bomb that would define her life was first tested\, was published in 2000 and translated into English by Eiko Otake of the performance artist duo Eiko & Koma (Station Hill Press\, 2010). In 2009\, Eiko reached out to the NY-based actress Ako (Shogun\, God Said This\, Snow Falling on Cedars\, and the founder of the Amaterasu Za theater company in NYC) suggested she perform it as a one-person play. It has been performed only twice\, in workshops at New York Theater Workshop in 2009 and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in 2010. They say that those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it\, but how you remember the past and whose eyes you are seeing it through are just as important. \nIn this\, the 80th anniversary year of the 1945 atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, which coincides with the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi death camps throughout Germany that same year\, we are reminded of humanity’s boundless capacity for cruelty and destruction. Those who survived these catastrophes came away with perspectives that some expressed in art and others in literature or advocacy. Their voices were powerful\, and they deserve to be heard and even amplified again and again in this time when the news\, sadly\, seems to be filled once again with stories of violence\, indifference\, and nationalism. \n\nPerformed in English with Japanese subtitle translation.\nRunning time: approximately 45 minutes.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: hapa.me: 25 Years of the Hapa Project
DESCRIPTION:In 2001\, artist Kip Fulbeck began traveling the country photographing multiracial individuals of all ages and walks of life. Fulbeck’s work sought to address in words and images the one question that Hapa people are frequently asked — What are you? After photographing more than 1\,200 people\, the project culminated in the landmark book and exhibition Kip Fulbeck: Part Asian\, 100% Hapa\, which toured throughout the U.S. A new exhibition Hapa.me — 25 Years of The Hapa Project\, revisits some of the original subjects two decades later. How do they look now? How have their views on their own identity changed? \nDerived from the Hawaiian word for “half\,” the word “hapa” has been embraced as a term of pride by many whose mixed-race heritage includes Asian or Pacific Islander ancestry. The exhibition comes at a time of increasing awareness and identification with being mixed race. The 2020 Census showed that 10% of the population identified as multiracial\, almost tripling from ten years before. In Hapa.me\, Fulbeck presents a nuanced portrait of change and growth within this broad identity by focusing on individual faces and voices. \nOriginating at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles\, this New York presentation will feature 30 portraits and responses of local subjects\, installed amidst a hand-painted mural that captures the beauty of being mixed. A central reading table encourages visitors to flip through Hapa.me artist’s books for a fuller archive of the project. This exhibition is a homecoming of sorts for Fulbeck: MOCA was one of the first museums to exhibit the Hapa Project and it has remained a fixture of our permanent exhibition which explores over 200 years of the experiences of Chinese in America. \nhapa.me: 25 Years of the Hapa Project and related programs are made possible with generous support from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature; public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs\, in partnership with the City Council; Bloomberg Philanthropies; and is funded by a grant from the New York City Tourism Foundation. \nAbout the Artist \nKip Fulbeck has exhibited and performed in over 20 countries and throughout the U.S. He is the author of six books including Part Asian\, 100% Hapa; Mixed: Portraits of Multiracial Kids; and Hapa.me – 15 Years of The Hapa Project\, and the exhibition artist of Perseverance: Japanese Tattoo Tradition in a Modern World. He teaches as a Distinguished Professor of Art at the UCSB\, where he received the Faculty Diversity Award and the Distinguished Teaching Award\, and has been named an Outstanding Faculty Member five times.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Immigration Detention Inc.: Deirdre Colon and Nancy Hiemstra in conversation with Gregory Donovan
DESCRIPTION:The trio of scholars will discuss “Immigration Detention Inc.: The Big Business of Locking Up Migrants” — the new book authored by Dr. Conlon and Dr. Hiemstra. \nNancy Hiemstra and a panel of scholars discuss her new co-authored book (with Deirdre Conlon)\, a damning exposé of the ways immigration detention generates income while those detained are starved\, sickened\, and exploited\, and how that profit making is driving the explosive growth of the U.S. detention system today. \nThe United States has the most extensive immigration detention system in the world\, expanding from a capacity of less than 5\,000 detainees per day in the 1980s to 52\,000 by 2019\, and even higher today. While the most vociferous anti-immigrant rhetoric may be attributed to Republicans\, US detention infrastructure has grown exponentially regardless of the political party in power as reports of abysmal detention conditions pile up. \nNancy Hiemstra is Associate Professor of Women’s\, Gender\, & Sexuality Studies at Stony Brook. A political geographer whose research focuses on US immigration enforcement policies\, she is co-author of Immigration Detention Inc: The Big Business of Locking Up Migrants\, author of Detain and Deport: The Chaotic U.S. Immigration Enforcement Regime\, and co-editor of Intimate Economies of Immigration Detention. \nDeirdre Conlon is Associate Professor of Geography based at the University of Leeds. A critical geographer working in the US and Britain\, her work focuses on how immigration and border controls are proliferating as they are monetized. She is co-author of Immigration Detention Inc: The Big Business of Locking Up Migrants\, and co-editor of Intimate Economies of Immigration Detention and Carceral Spaces: Mobility and Agency in Imprisonment and Migrant Detention.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: In Celebration of Where Are You Really From - Virtual
DESCRIPTION:Join AAWW for a celebration of Elaine Hsieh Chou’s Where Are You Really From\, featuring Delia Cai!\n\n\nJoin AAWW for a celebration of Elaine Hsieh Chou’s Where Are You Really From\, featuring Delia Cai! \n__ \nA mail order bride from Taiwan is packed up in a cardboard box and sent via express shipping to California\, where her much older husband awaits her. Two teenage girls meticulously plan how to kill and cook their downstairs neighbor. An American au pair moves to Paris to find herself\, only to find her actual French doppelgänger. A father reunites with his estranged daughter in unusual circumstances: as a background actor on the set of her film. A writer’s affair with a married artist tests the line between fact and fiction\, self-victimization and the victimization of others. \nIn these six singular stories and a novella that pivot from the terrible to the beautiful to the surreal\, Elaine Hsieh Chou confronts the slipperiness of truth in storytelling. With razor-sharp precision and psychological acuity\, she peels back the tales we tell ourselves to peer beneath them: at our treacherous desires\, our self-deceptions and our capacity for cruelty\, both to ourselves and each other. Expansive and provocative\, Where Are You Really From is a visionary achievement. \n__ \nElaine Hsieh Chou is a Taiwanese American author and screenwriter from California. Described as “the funniest\, most poignant novel of the year” by Vogue\, her debut novel Disorientation was a New York Times Editors’ Choice Book\, New York Public Library Young Lions Fiction Award finalist and Thurber Prize finalist. A former Rona Jaffe Graduate Fellow at New York University\, her Pushcart Award–winning short fiction appears in Guernica\, Black Warrior Review\, Tin House Online\, Ploughshares and The Atlantic\, while her essays appear in The Cut and Vanity Fair. She is a Fred R. Brown Literary Award recipient\, a Sundance Episodic Lab Fellow and a Gotham Series Creator to Watch. Her work has been supported by the Harry Ransom Center\, the New York Foundation for the Arts and Hedgebrook’s Writers-in-Residence Program. \nDelia Cai is a writer and editor based in New York. She writes the culture newsletter\, Deez Links. \n__ \nCOMMUNITY CARE & ACCESSIBILITY \nThis event will be streamed on Zoom Webinar. Please RSVP to receive a Zoom link via email\, which will be sent out two days in advance of the event. SUMMARY:The Original: A Chinese Bohemian in the Village\, Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:H T Tsiang with actress Joanna Moore in a 1960s TV program \nThe Original is an immersive walking tour through Greenwich Village with Michael Salgarolo following the strange\, hilarious life of Chinese American author H T Tsiang. Alternatively ignored and ridiculed in his own time\, Tsiang is now known as a visionary forebearer of modern Asian American literature. His two major novels\, The Hanging on Union Square (1935) and And China Has Hands (1937) challenged mainstream representations of Chinese Americans and presented a deeply unhinged satire of the American Dream. The Original explores how the cafeterias\, hand laundries\, and radical arts scene of the Depression-era West Village inspired Tsiang’s writing and made him an “original.”
