SUMMARY:MOCA x NYAFF Film Club: Saving Face
DESCRIPTION:Quarterly screenings & conversations on Asian and Asian American cinema in collaboration with New York Asian Film Festival\n\n\n*The film is rated R. \nMOCA x NYAFF Film Club is a quarterly program celebrating the brilliance and boldness of Asian and Asian American cinema. This series highlights films of historic and cultural significance under the theme Subversion\, spotlighting daring films that challenge the norm\, rewrite narratives\, and push boundaries. \nEach session is more than just a movie night—it’s an opportunity to connect\, discover\, and engage. Following the screening\, join us for a moderated conversation to explore the film’s themes\, creative impact\, and cultural context. Attendees are encouraged to share their thoughts and continue the dialogue during a casual networking reception afterward. \nDon’t miss this chance to immerse yourself in the world of bold cinema and meaningful connections. Let’s watch\, chat\, and celebrate together! \n*This ticketing policy is not intended to create barriers based on financial status but rather to ensure the sustainability of our practice—helping us cover event costs while keeping it accessible and welcoming to all. All registrations are final. Unfortunately\, we are unable to issue refunds under any circumstances at this time. \nSEPTEMBER SCREENING\nSaving Face (2004) \nDirected by: Alice WuRuntime: 91 minutes | Rated: R \nA queer romantic comedy set in vibrant\, multicultural New York City\, Alice Wu’s irresistible feature debut breathed fresh life into the charming story of a young woman’s complicated life and her pursuit of love amid the chaos. Wilhelmina is a 28-year-old overworked medical resident living in Manhattan with no social life. Her widowed mother\, Ma\, cannot understand why her desirable daughter spends all her time at work. Ma\, meanwhile\, appears to be a traditional ChineseAmerican woman still under the thumb of her ultra-strict father. That Wilhelmina and her mother are both products of the very insular\, traditional (and\, yes…gossipy) Chinese-American community in Flushing\, Queens makes the usual family ties even tighter. \nA true love letter to New York City\, SAVING FACE is told with a great deal of warmth and humor\, as everyone tries to sort out their emotions and fulfill their obligations…to themselves and to each other\, while all along acknowledging their not-so-secret lives and trying to “save face.” \nIt was the first Hollywood movie that centered on Chinese Americans since The Joy Luck Club (1993). \nStarring: Michelle Krusiec\, Joan Chen\, Lynn Chen \nPOST-FILM CONVERSATION\nStay after the screening for a conversation between MOCA’s Curator Herb Tam and NYAFF’s Executive Director Sam Jamier\, starting at 8:00 PM. Explore the film’s deeper meanings and behind-the-scenes context before engaging in further discussions with fellow attendees over beverages. \nABOUT New York Asian Film Festival \nThe New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) is North America’s premier event showcasing the very best in new Asian cinema. Held annually in July at Film at Lincoln Center and various venues across New York City\, NYAFF is celebrated for its bold\, diverse\, and dynamic programming. \nThe festival highlights a wide spectrum of films—from emerging voices to masterful auteurs—spanning genres such as cutting-edge blockbusters\, independent treasures\, and groundbreaking works. \nAs a vital platform for Asian filmmakers\, NYAFF fosters cross-cultural dialogue and champions the innovation\, creativity\, and richness of Asian storytelling on a global stage.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Ed Park: An Oral History of Atlantis with Mira Jacob - Hybrid
DESCRIPTION:A deadpan\, wildly imaginative collection of stories that slices clean through the mundanity and absurdity of modern life\, An Oral History of Atlantis is the newest collection of short stories from Ed Park\, the author of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize–winner and Pulitzer Prize finalist Same Bed Different Dreams. \n\n\nIn this utterly original collection\, characters question the fleetingness of youth and art\, reckon with the consequences of the everyday\, and find solace in the absurd\, the beautiful\, and the sublime. Throughout\, Ed Park deploys his trademark wit to create a world both strikingly recognizable and delightfully other. All together\, these fifteen stories have much to say about the meaning—and transitory nature—of our lives. And they are proof positive that Ed Park is one of the most insightful and imaginative writers working today. \nIn this conversation with Mira Jacob\, presented in collaboration with Yu & Me Books\, Ed Park discusses his latest book. \n* An Oral History of Atlantis will be available for sale at the venue. The author will sign books after the program.

SUMMARY:Theater: Destination Undefined
DESCRIPTION:A futuristic sci-fi play in NYC—robots\, memory cubes\, and a society that forgot what it meant to be human. \nSynopsis/ \nFive AI researchers from the Human Research Institute discover a mysterious Memory Cube buried in a long-forgotten Gold Vault beneath Manhattan. It contains something unimaginable: a living record of human consciousness from the year 2051. \nAs they decode the fragments\, a lost cyborg world begins to emerge — AI units fight for voting rights\, chip-enhanced humans scramble to survive a collapsing system\, and hidden secrets pulse beneath the vault’s rusted doors. Above ground\, a civilization built on algorithms begins to collapse. Below\, the last defenders of a relic economy are trapped with more questions than answers. \nBut the deeper the researchers dive\, the more unstable the memory becomes. Is this just a simulation of the past — or a warning from it? \nDestination Undefined is a genre-bending sci-fi absurdist play about trust\, identity\, and the cost of being human in a world that no longer knows what that means.

SUMMARY:Science\, Tonight! - A peer-reviewed comedy talkshow
DESCRIPTION:The peer-reviewed comedy talkshow where science comes to life!\n\n\nScience\, Tonight is a late-night comedy talk show with guests scientists who are prepared\, and improvisers who are not\, to talk about science. Host Dr. Mark Popinchalk and the Science\, Tonight reporting team are going to have their hands full keeping the show on the road as scientists and literal forces of nature have their turn in the hot seat. \nScience\, Tonight is like if Conan O’Brien met Charles Darwin\, Eric Andre met Marie Curie\, and John Oliver met the greatest\, underrated scientists of our time\, all to answer the universe’s biggest questions like: What has the speed of light been doing since college? When is my sleep paralysis demon’s new bedtime product line dropping? Has Betelgeuse heard the ending of Romeo and Juliet? The show is packed full of interviews\, audience “peer-review”\, learning\, laughs\, and an escalating sense of wonder and doom as our cast of experts and improvisers bring each topic to life. It’s science today\, tomorrow\, and Tonight! \nMark Popinchalk is an astronomer at the American Museum of Natural History who guesses how old stars are by looking at how quickly they spin; old stars spin slow\, young stars spin fast. He hosts the comedy talk show Science Tonight\, and is also a planetarium presenter\, ultimate frisbee player\, and bread maker. His favorite color is sky-blue-pink. He releases short form videos on socials every week\, and a new video every new moon on YouTube (@markpopinchalk). \nKristina Gustovich is an Earth scientist\, performer\, and educator. When she’s not puttin’ on the Ritz in live shows like Yesterday’s Horoscope\, she’s a doctoral student at Columbia’s Teachers College studying science education in informal settings like museums (and Caveat!). Find her on socials at @K_Gustovich on X and @mucho_gustovich on Instagram. \nIman Behbehani (she/her) is a masters student at the CUNY Graduate Center studying stellar explosions\, from dwarf novae to supernovae. Iman is a producer for Astro on Tap\, and started an affinity group for women of color in stem\, as she strives to make science more fun and inclusive. Outside of astro\, Iman enjoys boxing and riding her bike along riverside park. (Insta: @astroontapnyc) \nEmily Zhang is a writer/director specializing in science YouTube. Her path began with an astrophysics degree\, a lifelong love of video\, and a dream. She cut her teeth making videos and running operations at the science YouTube channel Veritasium\, and now freelances as a producer & advisor across a variety of channels. No\, she doesn’t have her own. Yet. IG @emilylinzhang. \nThis month’s guest! \nKyle Marian is a comedian\, producer\, science journalist and former scientist. She performs across the US and UK\, creating socially-mindful\, inclusive and accessible shows like ‘The Filipino Comedy Festival\,’ ‘Asians Strike Back: A Coronavirus Comedy & Science Show’ and ‘The Symposium: Academic Stand-Up.’ Kyle is now cultivating a network of educational standup comedians through the Science Comedy Collective (IG: @thesefunnynerds). SUMMARY:Exhibit: The New York Sari: A Journey Through Tradition\, Fashion\, and Identity
DESCRIPTION:The New York Sari showcases the deep influence that South Asians have had on the culture of New York City and how individuals have drawn strength from tradition while looking clearly towards a bolder future of inclusion and progress. \nThe New York Sari centers the sari as an essential part of the cultural fabric of New York City\, using it as a metaphor for the ways in which the individuals who wear and create saris have straddled tradition\, culture\, and modernity in their work\, art\, and lives. The exhibition tells the stories of who wears saris\, the relationship between saris and identities\, and how they’ve evolved over time. \nThe New York Sari showcases the deep influence that South Asians have had on the culture of New York City from the Gilded Age to the present day\, beginning with the little known history of Coney Island’s first theme park and culminating with the vibrant communities that are home to the South Asian diaspora today. Offering a unique history of migrant communities and gender in New York City\, the exhibition explores how individuals have drawn strength from tradition while looking clearly towards a bolder future of inclusion and progress.

SUMMARY:Natalia Nakazawa Artist Activation: Opening Celebration 2025
DESCRIPTION:Activities will include poster printmaking\, writing stories\, creating zines\, recording oral histories and 3D scanning personal objects.\n\n\nNatalia Nakazawa Artist Activation: Opening Celebration 2025 \nFriday\, September 12\, 2025 | TBD \nHow can we visualize our journeys? What have you brought with you? What is important to bring into the future? Inspired by the words of Matsuo Bashō\, “the journey itself is my home\,” \nActivities will include poster printmaking\, writing stories\, creating zines\, recording oral histories and 3D scanning personal objects. \nAbout Natalia Nakazawa: \nNatalia Nakazawa (b. 1982\, Charlotte\, NC) is a Queens-based interdisciplinary artist and educator whose work spans painting\, textiles\, and social practice. As a child of Latin American (Uruguayan) and Asian (Japanese American\, Yonsei) diasporas\, she draws on complex cultural legacies to explore identity\, migration\, and storytelling. Through collaborative\, community-driven projects\, Nakazawa blurs the boundaries between education\, activism\, and art\, inviting collective participation. Her jacquard textiles incorporate images from open-access museum collections\, often highlighting historical moments of cultural exchange. These works serve as tactile archives; places to critically engage with memory. \nAbout the Fellowship: \nThe Socrates Annual Fellowship and exhibition reflects Socrates’ founding commitment to artistic experimentation and excellence\, while also nurturing artists’ careers. Artists are selected through an open call and receive financial support\, access to Socrates’ outdoor studios and technical support\, and inclusion in a Park-wide exhibition. Since 2001\, 279 artists have participated with many subsequently receiving further commissions for public art projects. The Socrates Annual Fellowship & Exhibition is one of the Park’s longest running programs and is an important training ground for early career artists to gain experience creating art in the public realm. \nThis year’s Fellowship will respond to the theme “Up/rooted\,” which explores the complexities of uprooting species for long-term sustainability and resilience. The term “uprooted” evokes the tension between dislocation and resilience. “Up” signifies the act of lifting away\, while “root” refers to the hidden systems below the ground—anchoring life and absorbing essential nutrients. This duality invites us to reflect on the implications of relocation and adaptation\, exploring how when done thoughtfully it can foster new growth and understanding. In what ways can we foster regeneration while acknowledging and mitigating the losses within our ecological and social landscapes? How might we navigate the delicate balance between ecological preservation and community needs to create a more resilient future?

SUMMARY:The Second United Lenape / Lunáapeew Nations Pow Wow
DESCRIPTION:Join the weekend of family friendly fun\, culture\, art and learning with Indigenous dancers\, drummers\, and artisan craft and food vendors. \nJoin Prospect Park Alliance\, the nonprofit that sustains the Prospect Park in partnership with the city\, Éenda-Lŭnaapeewáhkiing Collective\, which brings together Lunáapeew/Lenape communities who have been displaced across Turtle Island (North America)\, and American Indian Community House\, which promotes the well-being and visibility of the American Indian community\, for the Second United Lenape/Lunáapeew Nations Pow Wow at the LeFrak Center at Lakeside in Prospect Park. \nThe first Pow Wow held in Prospect Park since 1972\, and the second ever Lenape Pow Wow in New York City\, this free\, two-day public event welcomes the original Indigenous Lenape peoples who were forced to relocate across the continent back to their ancestral homelands to reunite and share their cultures with Brooklynites today. Join the weekend of family friendly fun\, culture\, art and learning with Indigenous dancers\, drummers\, and artisan craft and food vendors. \nPow Wows are gatherings where Lenape/Lunáapeew and neighboring Indigenous nations socialize and celebrate life. Prospect Park hosted formal Pow Wows from 1916 to 1972. Reviving this tradition in Prospect Park provides the Lenape/Lunáapeew an opportunity to celebrate their culture in their homelands and offers Brooklynites of all backgrounds the chance to enjoy the drumming\, dancing\, singing\, art\, crafts and foods of the original stewards of this land. \nLenape grandfather George Stonefish organized the First United Lenape/Lunáapeew Nations Pow Wow at the Park Avenue Armory in 2018. In 2024\, Prospect Park Alliance held a culture fair with the American Indian House and EL Collective as a precursor to the Pow Wow. Prospect Park Alliance is honored to help continue this important tradition by hosting Lenape and allied Indigenous artists and creators\, dancers and drummers\, and artisan craft and food vendors in Prospect Park for a weekend of family-friendly culture\, learning and fun. \nLunáapeew/Lenape means human beings or\, more specifically\, “the ones who came from thought\,” and is the name of the indigenous peoples whose ancestral homelands encompassed what is today Brooklyn and the surrounding region. Éenda-Lŭnaapeewáhkiing\, “the land of the Lunáapeew\,” holds the stories of a civilization rich with a deep understanding of the delicate balance and mutual relationships necessary to nurture and sustain a healthy world. \nThe Pow Wow is part of the Alliance’s ReImagine Lefferts initiative\, which is transforming the Lefferts Historic House museum to explore the lives\, resistance and resilience of the Indigenous people of Lenapehoking\, whose unceded ancestral lands the park and house rests upon\, and Africans who were enslaved by the Lefferts family.
