SUMMARY:National Landscape of AANAPISIs History and Influence on Higher education
DESCRIPTION:AANAPISIs\, focusing on their history and influence in higher education\, as well as current dilemmas in today’s political climate.\n\nJoin the Asian American / Asian Research Institute for a presentation and discussion with Mike Hoa Nguyen (New York University)\, Caroline Hong (Queens College AANAPISI Project)\, Linh An (Hunter College AANAPISI Project)\, and Sau-fong Au (Brooklyn College AANAPISI Project) on the historical foundation of the AANAPISI program and its impact on the students and campuses at The City University of New York (CUNY). This workshop offers a national landscape of AANAPISIs\, focusing on their history and influence in higher education\, as well as current dilemmas in today’s political climate. \nOverview\nIn 2007\, the United States Congress established the Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISI) designation\, one of the federal government’s most recent Minority-Serving Institutions (MSI)\, to enhance the capacity of institutions to serve Asian American\, Native Hawaiian\, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) students. Today\, colleges and universities that become AANAPISIs are critical sites of innovation\, working to expand educational access and opportunities for AANHPIs. \nQueens College AANAPISI Project (QCAP)\nQCAP aims to support the academic success\, mental health\, and community engagement of Queens College’s diverse and underserved Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) students. QCAP addresses the specific needs of our AAPI students via a range of programs\, including multilingual peer tutoring in the Writing Center\, faculty development workshops\, mental health and art-making workshops\, an internship program\, and a community space.\n \nHunter College AANAPISI Project (HCAP)\nHCAP aims to enhance academic and student support services for Asian American and Pacific Islander students and other under-served students at Hunter College\, including first-generation college goers\, multilingual learners\, and students from immigrant families. We support students through our research skills programs\, writing and speaking seminars\, financial literacy programs\, mental wellness workshops\, and our transfer peer mentor programs. We also build institutional capacity to serve our students with faculty development workshops that focus on culturally sustaining pedagogies. \n \nBrooklyn College AANAPISI Project (BCAP)\nBCAP supports our 25% Asian American\, Native Hawaiian\, and Pacific Islander students—including Central Asian & Nomadic\, East Asian\, South Asian & “Desi\,” Southeast Asian & Pacific Islander\, West Asian & “MENA\,” and mixed heritage & intersecting communities. Our program aims to mitigate AAPI students’ barriers to educational achievement by enhancing institutional programs and services. BCAP addresses three main goals: 1) providing academic support for AAPI students by enhancing existing services and curriculum\, particularly Asian American Studies; 2) developing sustainable student leadership opportunities\, including the BCAP internship program; 3) engaging the campus community on AAPI students’ needs to provide culturally responsive services. \nThis event is supported by funding from the U.S. Department of Education through the Hunter College AANAPISI Project

SUMMARY:Korean Pop Culture Beyond Asia: Race and Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join GEMS for a talk on Korean Pop Culture Beyond Asia: Race and Reception (edited by David Oh and Benjamin Han).\n\n\nThe Research Center for the Study of Gender\, Media\, and Sexuality (GEMS) in the Department of Communications\, Drama\, and Film at the University of Exeter invites you to a book talk on Korean Pop Culture Beyond Asia: Race and Reception (edited by David Oh and Benjamin Han\, University of Washington Press\, 2024). As an example of counter-media flows\, the global popularity of Korean popular culture challenges us to rethink and reshape gender and racial politics and global fans’ subjectivities. At this book talk\, the editors and contributors to this book will discuss various forms of production\, interpretation\, and embodied practices by Korean popular culture fans\, generating conversations about intimacy\, racialized gender\, gendered race\, and globalization from transnational and transcultural perspectives. \nDate: March 19 4:30 pm- 6:00 pm (GMT); 12:30 am – 2pm (EDT) \nBook Description: \nKorean media has exploded in popularity across the globe in the past decade: BTS and other K-pop groups have packed stadiums\, Parasite garnered record-breaking critical success\, The Masked Singer and Single’s Inferno became viral TV hits\, and multiday KCON fan events have highlighted not only media but Korean food\, cosmetics\, and fashion. Exploring how fans from different cultural and racial backgrounds engage with Korean media in local and individual contexts\, this edited collection reveals complex transcultural affinities\, conflicts\, and negotiations. The essays delve into the ways people create meaning from\, and shape affinity to\, Korean television and music. The book also explores Korean popular culture’s influence on audiences’ imaginative play\, desires\, and fantasies\, critically examining topics such as TikTok as a space of Asian fetishization\, Black YouTubers’ K-pop reaction videos\, the perception of Korean men in opposition to European hegemonic masculinity\, and Middle Eastern fans’ responses to appropriation in K-pop. Throughout\, the contributors provide perceptive analyses that reveal what the interplay of race and Korean entertainment tells us about the complex nature of transnational fandom \n(University of Washington Press: \nhttps://uwapress.uw.edu/book/9780295752969/korean-pop-culture-beyond-asia/) \nEditors of the book: \nDavid Oh is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communications in the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. SUMMARY:MOCA TALKS with Karen Fang – The Life and Work of Tyrus Wong
DESCRIPTION:We will celebrate Wong’s enduring impact on American visual storytelling\, including his contributions to the beloved Disney classic Bambi.\n\n\nCan’t attend in person? Join us online. \nThe Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) invites you to an insightful conversation with Karen Fang\, Professor of English at the University of Houston\, film scholar\, cultural critic\, and author of Background Artist: The Life and Work of Tyrus Wong. \nYou may not recognize the name Tyrus Wong\, but you’ve likely seen his work—most notably in the atmospheric scenes of Disney’s Bambi. Background Artist shares the inspiring story of Wong’s remarkable 106-year life and showcases his wide array of creative work\, from the paintings and fine art prints he made working for Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration to the unique handmade kites he designed and flew on the Santa Monica beach. It tells how he came to the United States as a ten-year-old boy in 1920\, at a time when the Chinese Exclusion Act barred him from legal citizenship. Yet it also shows how Wong found American communities that welcomed him and nurtured his artistic talent. Covering everything from his work as a studio sketch artist for Warner Bros. to the best-selling Christmas cards he designed for Hallmark and other greeting card companies\, this book celebrates a multitalented Asian American artist and pioneer. \nAs part of this event\, two original paintings by Tyrus Wong will be temporarily displayed. Through this discussion\, MOCA honors Wong’s enduring influence on American visual storytelling\, his ability to bridge cultures through art\, and the creative vision that continues to inspire generations. The program will be moderated by Yifan Wu\, MOCA’s Senior Director of Events and Operations. \nAbout Karen Fang \nKaren Fang is a film scholar and visual culture critic who writes and speaks for museums and film festivals around the world. Known for previous books about Hong Kong cinema and nineteenth-century British interest in exotic objects\, Karen often writes about the intersection of eastern and western aesthetics. Her work has appeared in Smithsonian Magazine\, Hyperallergic\, Nikkei Asia\, and the Los Angeles Review of Books. She is also a prominent contributor to The Engines of Our Ingenuity\, a long-running\, widely distributed public radio series about science and innovation\, where her episodes always focus on the visual arts. A Sunday painter\, Karen’s favorite media are watercolor and pen and ink.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Have You Eaten Yet?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Cheuk Kwan\, director and producer of the 15 part documentary series\, “Chinese Restaurants” on YouTube and author of “Have You Eaten Yet?” a book inspired by his series. Before Anthony Bourdain’s “A Cook’s Tour”\, there was Cheuk Kwan’s\, “Chinese Restaurants.” He traveled for 4 years to unexpected places in the world of the Chinese diaspora. \nCheuk will share the stories of Chinese immigrants found in unexpected places in the world.  From the Amazon River in Brazil to Israel; to Norway\, the land of the midnight sun and one of the few Chinese restaurants within the Arctic Circle; to Cape Town’s first Chinese restaurant to the oldest one in Istanbul. Running a restaurant is the easiest path for the Chinese immigrants to integrate into a new community and get on their feet. Through the lens of food\, they shared their stories with Cheuk – stories of courage\, survival and hope. Each story is unique and at the same time\, very familiar to our own immigrant story. \nWe will also have a drawing for 3 signed books at the end of the webinar.  Winner must be present.

SUMMARY:Top Chef’s Kristen Kish in Conversation with Stacy London: Accidentally on Purpose
DESCRIPTION:The pivotal moments in Kristen Kish’s life are chronicled on her tattooed arms — arms that can barely contain the moments and now also reflect an Emmy nomination. \nKish’s unlikely trajectory — born in South Korea and adopted into a family in Michigan\, a meteoric rise in the culinary world that took her from Top Chef contestant and winner to the full-circle moment of becoming the show’s host — has been full of unexpected turns. But as she reveals in her deeply personal new memoir\, Accidentally on Purpose\, it’s in the unplanned moments that life truly takes shape. Kish joins us with stylist\, fashion designer\, author and friend Stacy London to talk about the book and the backstory of her journey in food and in life\, about coming out and finding love\, and more. And she shares the lessons she has learned along the way: there is no map\, accidents happen\, curveballs come\, be open. \n“She’s written a recipe for a life worth living: with purpose\, curiosity\, forgiveness\, luck\, and of course—what every recipe relies on—love.” ― Stacy London\, co-host Wear Whatever the F You Want on Amazon Prime
