SUMMARY:Writing the Family Story
DESCRIPTION:Your family is unique in all the world\, but how do you best tell its story? Whether you’re starting with boxes (or electronic folders) of photos\, diaries\, news clippings\, recipes\, and other mementos or whether memories themselves are your main material\, documenting a family history can be daunting. But it can be done well and meaningfully and shared with the people you love for decades to come. \nMathina Calliope\, a writer\, editor\, teacher\, and writing coach\, shares the tools and guidance you need to move from daunted through motivated and on to accomplished. \nFebruary 3  Nostalgia and Brainstorming  \nFebruary 10  Genre and Structure  \nFebruary 24  Nuts and Bolts  \nMarch 3  Impact \n Photo Credit:: Shutterstock/ New Africa

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Amitava Kumar Discusses My Beloved Life with Katie Kitamura
DESCRIPTION:An absorbing\, exceptionally moving novel that traces the arc of a man’s life\, an ordinary life made exceptional by the fact that he has loved and has been loved in turn. \nJadunath Kunwar’s beginnings are humble\, even inauspicious. In 1935 in a village near George Orwell’s birthplace\, Jadu’s mother\, while pregnant with him\, nearly dies from a cobra bite. When we see Jadu again\, he is in college\, meeting the Sherpa who first summited Everest and wondering what it means to be modern. As his life skates between the mythical and the mundane\, and as changes big and small sweep across India\, Jadu finds meaning in the most unexpected places. He befriends poets and politicians. He becomes a historian. And he has a daughter\, Jugnu\, a television journalist with a career in the United States—whose own story recasts the past in a new light. Piercing\, fleet-footed\, and undeniably resonant\, here is a novel from a singularly gifted writer about how we tell stories and write history\, how individuals play a counterpoint to big movements\, how no single life is without consequence. \nAmitava Kumar was born in Ara\, India\, and grew up in the nearby town of Patna. He is the author of the novel Immigrant\, Montana\, as well as several other books of nonfiction and fiction. He lives in Poughkeepsie\, New York\, and teaches at Vassar College. Photo credit Imrul Islam \nKatie Kitamura’s most recent novel is Intimacies. One of The New York Times’ 10 Best Books of 2021 and one of Barack Obama’s Favorite Books of 2021\, it was longlisted for the National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award. The recipient of a Rome Prize in Literature and the Prix Litteraire Lucien Barriere\, her work has been translated into 21 languages and is being adapted for film and television. Her new novel\, Audition\, will be published in 2025.

SUMMARY:MOCA x NYAFF Film Club: Better Luck Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Quarterly screenings & conversations on Asian and Asian American cinema in collaboration with New York Asian Film Festival\n\n\n\n*The film is Rated R. \nMOCA is thrilled to partner with the New York Asian Film Festival to present the MOCA x NYAFF Film Club\, a quarterly program celebrating the brilliance and boldness of Asian and Asian American cinema. This series highlights films of historic and cultural significance under the theme Subversion\, spotlighting daring films that challenge the norm\, rewrite narratives\, and push boundaries. \nEach session is more than just a movie night—it’s an opportunity to connect\, discover\, and engage. Following the screening\, join us for a moderated conversation to explore the film’s themes\, creative impact\, and cultural context. Attendees are encouraged to share their thoughts and continue the dialogue during a casual networking reception afterward. \nDon’t miss this chance to immerse yourself in the world of bold cinema and meaningful connections. Let’s watch\, chat\, and celebrate together! \n \nFEBRUARY SCREENING\nBetter Luck Tomorrow (2002) \nDirected by: Justin LinRuntime: 101 minutes | Rated: R \nA searing portrait of ambition and moral disintegration\, Better Luck Tomorrow follows a group of high-achieving Asian American teenagers as they navigate the pressures of suburban privilege in Orange County\, California. When their drive for academic success spirals into a dangerous foray into crime\, the film paints a riveting picture of teen hubris and the seductive power of subversion. \nDirector Justin Lin maxed out ten credit cards to finance this bold independent feature\, later receiving backing from none other than MC Hammer. Loosely inspired by a 1992 murder case\, this gritty drama leaves audiences pondering questions of identity\, morality\, and privilege. \nStarring: Parry Shen\, Jason Tobin\, Sung Kang\, Roger Fan\, Karin Anna Cheung \n \nPOST-FILM CONVERSATION\nStay after the screening for a conversation between MOCA’s Curator Herb Tam and NYAFF’s Executive Director Sam Jamier\, starting at 8:20 PM. Explore the film’s deeper meanings and behind-the-scenes context before engaging in further discussions with fellow attendees over beverages. \n \nABOUT New York Asian Film Festival \nThe New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) is North America’s premier event showcasing the very best in new Asian cinema. Held annually in July at Film at Lincoln Center and various venues across New York City\, NYAFF is celebrated for its bold\, diverse\, and dynamic programming. \nThe festival highlights a wide spectrum of films—from emerging voices to masterful auteurs—spanning genres such as cutting-edge blockbusters\, independent treasures\, and groundbreaking works. \nAs a vital platform for Asian filmmakers\, NYAFF fosters cross-cultural dialogue and champions the innovation\, creativity\, and richness of Asian storytelling on a global stage.

SUMMARY:In Celebration of The Magnificent Ruins
DESCRIPTION:Join AAWW in-person and online for a celebration of Nayantara Roy’s The Magnificent Ruins!\n\n\nJoin AAWW in-person and online for a celebration of Nayantara Roy’s The Magnificent Ruins\, a “rare feast” of a novel in which a young Indian American book editor inherits her estranged family’s ancestral home–and their long-buried secrets (Rachel Lyon\, author of Self-Portrait With Boy)! Nayantara will be in conversation with writer Nina Sharma\, and the evening will feature performances by Aditi Misra\, Shayon Maitra\, and Priya Roy. \n__ \nIt is the summer of 2015\, and Lila De is on the verge of a breakthrough in her career at a prestigious New York publishing house. But when she gets a call from her mother in India\, informing her that she’s inherited her family’s sprawling estate\, she must confront the legacy of an extended family that she thought she left behind sixteen years ago. \nReturning to Kolkata reunites Lila with her mother after a decade of estrangement\, and then there are her grandmother\, aunts\, uncles\, and cousins\, all of whom still live in the house\, all of whom resent her sudden inheritance. To make matters more complicated\, her first boyfriend seeks her out when she arrives\, and her star author—and occasional lover—is suddenly determined to make things serious. \nAs Lila tries to come to terms with both past and present\, long-suppressed secrets from her family emerge\, culminating in an act of shocking violence\, and she must finally reckon with her inherited custom of keeping everything under the surface. \nWise\, witty\, and deeply moving\, The Magnificent Ruins is an utterly addictive read and a stunning debut. \n__ \nNayantara Roy is the author of THE MAGNIFICENT RUINS which was a New York Times Editor’s Choice novel\, an LA Times Editor’s Pick\, a Washington Post Best Book\, a People Magazine Best Book\, an Apple Books best debut\, a Hachette book club pick\, a Lilly’s Library book club pick and a Gold House book club pick amongst others. Her plays have been performed internationally\, in the UK and India. Roy lives in Silver Lake\, Los Angeles\, where she works as a television executive by day. \nNina Sharma is the author of THE WAY YOU MAKE ME FEEL: INTERRACIAL LOVE IN BLACK AND BROWN. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker\, Electric Literature\, Women’s Studies Quarterly\, Longreads\, and The Margins\, among other publications. She received her MFA in writing from Columbia University’s School of the Arts and has been awarded residencies from Vermont Studio Center and St. Nell’s Humor Writing Residency. SUMMARY:Leading with Love: Reframing Conflict & Accountability
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a teach-in about how conflict can transform our relationships and communities for the better.\n\n\nLeading with Love: Reframing Conflict & Accountability \nConflict is everywhere\, yet many of us are adverse to confronting it. Join us for a teach-in about how conflict can transform our relationships and communities for the better. \nThis session utilizes the teachings of Dr. King’s philosophy of Nonviolence and Dr. Marshall Rosenberg’s Nonviolent Communication. \nAbout Kingian Nonviolence (KNV): \nKNV is the philosophy and strategy that Dr. King utilized in organizing the Civil Rights movements. Since his passing\, many of his close friends and allies took to teaching and passing down this philosophy. \nAbout Nonviolent Communication (NVC): \nNVC is a language and tool developed by the late Dr. Marshall Rosenberg to answer the question: “why do people hurt each other”? It’s a communication framework that can help us resolve conflicts in a positive way. \nParticipants should come to the session with a conflict they’d like to explore\, and ideally\, that they would want to share. Sharing is encouraged\, but not required. \nOur Instructor \nGeorge Dou (he/him) is an educator and conflict resolution trainer\, and a double-alumnus of North Carolina State University\, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Masters of Education. He received certification in Kingian Nonviolence training from the University of Rhode Island. \nHis current work revolves around supporting college students of underrepresented and historically marginalized backgrounds.

SUMMARY:Skin as Technology in Asian/America
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Tara Fickle. Presented by the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU. \nREGISTER \n“Skin” has multiple and fraught meanings in Asian America. Asian skin tones are ambiguous\, variously labeled as yellow\, brown\, or white-ish. Colorism and the stigma of darker skin are frequently raised as evidence of Asian anti-Blackness\, and a preference for skin whitening likewise interpreted as imitating whiteness. As scholars like Thuy Linh Nguyen Tu\, S. Heijin Lee\, and Natalia Duong have pointed out\, Asian skin is a porous site where racial\, national\, gendered\, and aesthetic meanings collide\, and where the legacies of war\, imperialism\, and neoliberalization are written on the body.  \nAlongside cosmetic surgery\, self-care and beauty trends\, skin can also be understood as a kind of technology. We can “reskin” ourselves online by choosing from a nearly endless color palette for our virtual avatars. Military technology aims at constructing body armor that is essentially a “second skin.” Pharmaceutical companies promise to create a kind of barrier that protects skin itself from the harms of life\, to\, in short\, use “bioactive” technology to reverse natural processes like aging. Scholars in this conversation will discuss the ways in which attention to skin as a technology (e.g. as virtual costume in digital spaces\, as environmental interface\, military armor\, etc.) can accordingly nuance our understandings of race\, nationality\, class\, and aesthetics in Asian/America. \nThis virtual discussion\, curated and moderated by Professor Tara Fickle (Northwestern University)\, features Professors Michelle Huang (Northwestern University)\, Miliann Kang (University of Massachusetts\, Amherst )\, and Sunny Xiang (Yale University). \nAccessibility note: This event will be hosted virtually on Zoom. A Zoom account\, internet access\, and a smartphone or computer is required. Closed captioning will be provided for all audio. If you have any access needs\, please email apa.rsvp@nyu.edu. \nTara Fickle is associate professor of Asian American Studies at Northwestern University. She is the author of The Race Card: From Gaming Technologies to Model Minorities (2019)\, and co-editor of the volume Made in Asia/America (2024)\, both of which explore material and ideological linkages between games and Asian/American racialization. Fickle’s current research projects include the racialized and gendered dimensions of global esports (competitive gaming)\, and a book and digital archive of the canonical Asian American anthology\, Aiiieeeee! (1974). \nImage: A still from the film\, Ex Machina (2014).

In parallel to the theme of solidarity in the “In Our Corner” exhibition\, Think!Chinatown is proud to bring a host of ally organizations to the Studio. The organizations will include Black Gotham\, Blasian March\, en foco\, and Vietnamese Boat People. Each group will share what they are working on and what asks they might have. The exhibition’s artists and visiting groups have been collaborating on a playlist\, building something small together to be shared during the reception with food and chat. Be a part of this great exchange where tomorrow’s solidarity is forged and come share your thoughts and support for these amazing artists and organizations! \nRSVP required for entry\, no walk-ins allowed! \nIn Our Corner: Exchanges in the Asian American Art Movements and Beyond explores the personal and professional support that artists of Asian descent received during and after the Asian American Art Movements. This companion exhibition to Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001) at New York University’s 80WSE Gallery\, invites five artists of the three key art collectives and organizations featured in Legacies to show alongside five non-Asian American artists who supported their work and growth over the years. These relationships range from recently made friendships to lifelong partnerships and even marriage: Kathleen Foster joins Ching Ming Cheung; Charles Luce joins Helen Oji; Howardena Pindell joins Arlan Huang; Shellyne Rodriguez joins Tomie Arai; and Arleen Schloss joins Nina Kuo. To highlight AAAC’s collection and its ongoing solidarity-building\, In Our Corner presents five works by non-Asian American artists from the collection\, Columbia Fiero\, Kitty Katz\, Donald Lipski\, Eva Mantell\, and Sepp Seitz. As the hosting institution for In Our Corner\, Think!Chinatown’s commission of Black Gotham’s Grand Rising and its inclusion in the show demonstrates the organization’s ongoing exchange and collaboration with communities of color. Through interviews and writings from the artists\, In Our Corner highlights these bonds and explores how artist collectives/organizations intersected and fostered connections.
