SUMMARY:Paperback Launch: Same Bed Different Dreams by Ed Park in conversation with Ava Chin
DESCRIPTION:Join Yu & Me Books at New Design High School to celebrate the paperback launch of Same Bed Different Dreams with author\, Ed Park! In conversation with Ava Chin \nABOUT THE BOOK \nA wild\, sweeping novel that imagines an alternate secret history of Korea and the traces it leaves on the present—loaded with assassins and mad poets\, RPGs and slasher films\, pop bands and the perils of social media \nOne of the New York Times’ 100 Notable Books of the Year • One of Publishers Weekly Ten Best Books of the Year • Finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize \nIn 1919\, far-flung patriots establish the Korean Provisional Government to protest the Japanese occupation of their country. This government-in-exile proves mostly symbolic\, though\, and after Japan’s defeat in World War II\, the KPG dissolves and civil war erupts\, resulting in the tragic North-South split that remains today. \nBut what if the KPG still existed—now working toward a unified Korea\, secretly pulling levers to further its aims? Same Bed Different Dreams weaves together three distinct narrative voices with an archive of mysterious images\, and twists reality like a kaleidoscope. Korean history\, American pop culture\, and our tech-fraught lives come together in this extraordinary and unforgettable novel. \nSoon Sheen\, a former writer now employed by the tech behemoth GLOAT\, comes into possession of an unfinished book seemingly authored by the KPG. The manuscript is a riveting revisionist history\, connecting famous names and obscure bit players to the KPG’s grand project—everyone from Syngman Rhee and architect-poet Yi Sang to Jack London and Marilyn Monroe. M*A*S*H is in here\, too\, as are the Moonies and a history of violence extending from the assassination of President McKinley to the Reagan-era downing of a passenger plane that puts the world on the brink of war. \nFrom the acclaimed author of Personal Days\, Same Bed Different Dreams is a raucously funny feat of imagination and a thrilling meld of history and fiction that pulls readers into another dimension—one in which utopia is possible. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nEd Park is the author of the novel Personal Days. He was a founding editor of The Believer\, the literary editor of The Village Voice\, and an editor at Penguin Press. His stories and articles have appeared in The New Yorker\, Bookforum\, The New York Review of Books\, and Harper’s. He wrote a science-fiction column for the Los Angeles Times and a comics column for The New York Times. He lives in Manhattan with his family. \nin conversation with \nAva Chin is the author of Eating Wildly\, winner of the Les Dames d’Escoffier International M.F.K. Fisher Book Prize. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, the Los Angeles Times\, The Village Voice\, and Saveur. She is the recipient of grants and fellowships from the New York Public Library’s Cullman Center\, the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program\, New York Foundation for the Arts\, New York Institute for the Humanities\, and the Asian American Writers’ Workshop. She is a professor of creative nonfiction at the City University of New York.

SUMMARY:Ginko Okazaki: a Japanese American Novelist in an Age of Ultranationalism
DESCRIPTION:This panel presentation introduces an ongoing project to recover and translate the Japanese-language writings of the Issei novelist and teacher Ginko Okazaki (pen-name of Masue Shinozaki Orimo\, 1895-1973). Ginko was part of a cohort of highly educated Japanese women who emigrated to the United States in the 1920s. She is best known for her publication of the novel Soil of Salinas (サリナスの土\, currently in draft translation by Stephen Kohl\, professor emeritus\, University of Oregon). Originally written in the 1930s\, the Soil of Salinas manuscript was lost during World War II. After the war\, Ginko rewrote the novel from recovered notes and published it in 1967. \nAlan K. Ota\, nephew of Ginko’s daughter\, will present on how the study of Ginko’s life and work may offer insights to aspiring artists\, activists\, and teachers as they confront new forms of oppression and ultranationalism in the 21st century. Andrew Way Leong (UC Berkeley) will present on the ongoing work involved in bringing Ginko’s work to a contemporary English-language readership. Talk will feature a pre-recorded reading by Sophie Oda\, great-granddaughter of Ginko Ozaki\, of a short excerpt from Soil of Salinas.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Amanda Lee Koe with Zoë Chao: Sister Snake
DESCRIPTION:Writer Amanda Lee Koe joins us to discuss her new book\, Sister Snake\, with Actress Zoë Chao. \nA glittering\, bold\, darkly funny novel about two sisters—one in New York\, one in Singapore—who are bound by an ancient secret \nSisterhood is difficult for Su and Emerald. Su leads a sheltered\, moneyed life as the picture-perfect wife of a conservative politician in Singapore. Emerald is a nihilistic sugar baby in New York\, living from whim to whim and using her charms to make ends meet. But they share a secret: once\, they were snakes\, basking under a full moon in Tang dynasty China. \nA thousand years later\, their mysterious history is the only thing still binding them together. When Emerald experiences a violent encounter in Central Park and Su boards the next flight to New York\, the two reach a tenuous reconciliation for the first time in decades. Su convinces Emerald to move to Singapore so she can keep an eye on her—but she soon begins to worry that Emerald’s irrepressible behavior will out them both\, in a sparkling\, affluent city where everything runs like clockwork and any deviation from the norm is automatically suspect. \nRazor-sharp\, hilarious\, and raw in emotion\, Sister Snake explores chosen family\, queerness\, passing\, and the struggle against conformity. Reimagining the Chinese folktale “The Legend of the White Snake\,” this is a novel about being seen for who you are—and\, ultimately\, how to live free. \nAt this event\, Amanda Lee Koe will discuss her new book with Zoë Chao \nTo join the event in person | Doors will open 30 minutes before the program begins. For free events\, we generally overbook to ensure a full house. Priority will be given to those who have registered in advance\, but registration does not guarantee admission. All registered seats are released shortly before start time\, and seats may become available at that time. A standby line will form 30 minutes before the program. \nABOUT THE SPEAKERS \nAmanda Lee Koe was born and raised in Singapore and has lived in New York\, Beijing\, Berlin and Bangkok. Her debut novel\, Delayed Rays of a Star (Doubleday\, 2019) was named a Most Anticipated Title by ELLE\, Los Angeles Times\, Thrillist\, and USA Today\, and one of NPR’s Best Books of The Year. Amanda has received fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts\, PEN America\, the University of Iowa’s International Writing Program\, the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program\, the National Arts Council of Singapore\, and the Fóndation Jan Michalski. She was previously fiction editor of Esquire Singapore. \nZoë Chao can most recently be seen in Peacock’s sci-fi rom-com IF YOU WERE THE LAST opposite Anthony Mackie and in the Netflix romantic comedy\, YOUR PLACE OR MINE\, opposite Reese Witherspoon. In December\, Zoë can be seen in Marielle Heller’s NIGHTBITCH opposite Amy Adams and soon also\, in James Gunn’s animated series CREATURES COMMANDOS. Chao is also in the newest season of STARZ’s cult favorite PARTY DOWN. And in Apple’s two seasons of Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s murder mystery comedy\, THE AFTERPARTY. Chao was awarded the “Actress Award for Television” at the Inaugural Critics Choice Association Celebration of Asian Pacific Cinema & Television for her work on the show. Zoë was also named one of Variety’s 10 Actors to Watch in 2024.
