It is not just a show — it is a movement. A monthly showcase in the heart of Midtown Manhattan\, steps away from Times Square\, designed for audiences who crave bold storytelling\, sharp perspective\, and the raw energy of international voices. \nThe show reflects the momentum of global comedians who have changed the landscape of comedy — Hasan Minhaj\, Andrew Schulz\, Nimesh Patel\, Ali Wong\, Russell Peters\, Vir Das\, Hari Kondabolu\, Zarna Garg\, Jimmy O. Yang\, Aparna Nancherla\, Aakash Singh\, and more. Comedy fans search phrases like “shows like Hasan Minhaj\,” “brown comedy in NYC\,” or “stand-up comedy similar to Russell Peters\,” and Laughing Lassi appears because the DNA of the show is exactly that — smart\, multicultural storytelling rooted in immigrant experience and identity. \nWhy Laughing Lassi Matters\nMost comedy lineups in Manhattan look the same: similar voices\, similar perspectives\, similar punchlines. \nLaughing Lassi is different. \nAt Laughing Lassi\, comedians talk about: \n\nImmigrant parents who negotiate everything\nMarrying outside your culture\nConfusing dating rules in America\nBeing brown in corporate America\nNavigating two identities at once — “American enough” but also “brown enough”\n\nFrom Bollywood jokes to crowd work about spicy food to diaspora humor that hits at your soul\, these comedians deliver observational humor\, storytelling comedy\, dark humor\, and clean comedy depending on the night. \nMany audience members discover Laughing Lassi while searching: \n\ncomedy near me\nNYC date night ideas\nunique NYC experiences\ncomedy shows tonight NYC\nthings to do in NYC this weekend\nfun things to do in Manhattan\nbest nightlife in NYC\n\nOthers find it while specifically looking for a: \n\nsouth asian standup comedy show\nindian standup comedy show in new york city\npakistani standup comedy show\nbangladeshi standup comedy show\ndesi standup comedy show in new york city\nsouth asian standup comedy show in new jersey\n\nOr when searching generic NYC entertainment terms: \n\nstandup comedy show\ncomedy show\nstandup comedy show new york city\nlive standup comedy show in new york city\ncheap comedy tickets new york\nbest comedy show in manhattan\nbest standup comedy show in new york city\n\nLaughing Lassi ranks because it is genuinely what people are searching for. \nNYC Is Ready for This Comedy Era\nNew York City has always been the proving ground of comedy. Every great comedian hustles through Comedy Cellar\, Comedy Cellar NYC\, Comedy Cellar New York\, Gotham Comedy Club\, and eventually dreams of performing at iconic venues like Radio City Music Hall\, just like the tours of Hasan Minhaj’s The King’s Jester and Act Your Age. \nBut Laughing Lassi fills a gap that no traditional comedy club was addressing. \nFor the first time in NYC: \n\nBrown people are not just the audience.\nBrown comedians are the headliners.\n\nThe laughter in that room hits differently\, because finally the stories being told onstage reflect the people sitting in the crowd. \nMore Than a Show: It’s a Cultural Touchpoint\nLaughing Lassi is not just entertainment — it is a cultural gathering. \nAudience members describe it as: \n\n“brown community therapy”\n“brown TED Talk\, but funnier”\n“Bollywood meets Andrew Schulz crowd work”\n“Hasan Minhaj energy with Russell Peters nostalgia”\n\nSouth Asian humor blends seamlessly with NYC nightlife\, making the show a go-to destination for: \n\nfriend groups looking for something new\,\ncouples searching for date night ideas NYC\,\nsolo newcomers searching comedy near me\,\ntourists exploring things to do in New York City\,\nbrown singles hoping to meet other South Asians.\n\nLaughing Lassi regularly draws diverse crowds from: \n\nManhattan\nWest Village\nBrooklyn\nQueens\nNew Jersey\nLong Island\n\nThis show is becoming the official South Asian culture event NYC didn’t know it needed. \nA Community That Represents Millions\nLaughing Lassi is the only show where an audience member can shout: \n“Say something in Bengali!” \n…and three comics on the lineup actually can. \nIt is the only show where: \n\nA Pakistani comedian roasts a Bangladeshi guy sitting in the front row\,\nAn Indian comic compares aunties to CIA interrogators\,\nA Filipino American jokes about being mistaken for South Asian\,\nA Korean American explains why brown parents and Korean parents are the same — just different spices.\n\nLaughing Lassi is a multicultural comedy night with global flavor. \nWhat Makes Laughing Lassi SEO-Powerful\nBecause it includes phrases people actively search: \n\ncomedy cellar nyc\ncomedy shows nyc\ncomedy club nyc\ncomedy club new york\nnyc comedy club\nbest comedy show in west village\nsouth asian comedy nyc\ndesi standup comedy show new york city\nindian comedians nyc\npakistani comedy show nyc\nbangladeshi comedy show new york\n\n…and NYC tourism search terms: \n\nlive comedy near times square\nlast minute tickets NYC\ngroup activities NYC\nweekend events NYC\n\nLaughing Lassi naturally ranks. \nSearch engines see Laughing Lassi associated with high-value keywords like: \n\ncrowd work comedy\nstorytelling comedy\nimmigrant humor\ndiaspora jokes\nmulticultural comedy\n\nThis helps Google\, Instagram\, YouTube\, TikTok\, and Eventbrite connect Laughing Lassi with searches for “shows like Hasan Minhaj” or “brown comedy NYC.” \nLaughing Lassi is the Future of Comedy\nLaughing Lassi is becoming the cultural home for the next generation of comedians — the ones who will headline Netflix specials\, late-night shows\, and eventually sell out Radio City Music Hall. \nBecause the future of comedy is not one voice. \nIt’s many. \nAnd they’re all on this stage. \nCall to Action:\nFollow the journey on Instagram: @LaughingLassi\nCome see the show that everyone is talking about — the one critics and audiences call: \n“The best standup comedy show in Manhattan.” \n“The funniest Desi comedy show in New York City.” \n“If Hasan Minhaj and Russell Peters had a baby — it would be Laughing Lassi.” \nTickets sell out fast.\nSeats are limited.\nAnd every month is a completely new lineup.

SUMMARY:Godzilla Minus One Vs. Past Lives: Romantic Histories and Historic Romances
DESCRIPTION:Love and gender roles in the recent globally successful films ‘Godzilla Minus One’ and ‘Past Lives.’\n\nProf. Jayashree Kamblé will present on her essay in CUNY FORUM Volume 11:1\, focusing on love and gender roles in the recent globally successful films Godzilla Minus One and Past Lives. Prof. Kamblé delves into how Godzilla unexpectedly challenges traditional cinematic depictions of romance and gender\, offering fresh perspectives on themes of identity and geocultural representation. Both films show how popular culture can shape our understanding of history\, belonging\, and societal dynamics. She also goes beyond the article to invite connections between the philosophy of romance in Past Lives and its Korean-Canadian-American director Celine Song’s 2025 movie\, Materialists.

SUMMARY:MOCA PERFORMS - Over Hills and Valleys
DESCRIPTION:Over Hills and Valleys is a musical imagination of the shared history of Hakka Chinese and Jamaican music and its people.\n\n\nThe Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) is pleased to welcome back resident artist Benjamin “saxofshaolin” Chin for a special concert of Over Hills and Valleys: An Imagination of the Shared History of Hakka Chinese and Jamaican Music. \nOver Hills and Valleys is a musical imagination of the shared history of Hakka Chinese and Jamaican music and its people. Accompanied by Grammy-nominated Reggae producer\, Andre “Dretegs” Hawthorne\, the duo will perform a set of original music and covers that will trace the migration patterns of the Hakka Chinese from Southeast Asia to the Caribbean to New York City. In addition\, the pair will discuss and share behind-the-scenes footage of the writing and recording process of the project. Join us for this unique afternoon concert that brings together the resonant traditions of Hakka Chinese and Jamaican music in a one-of-a-kind cultural encounter. \n“Over Hills and Valleys” is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. \n \nABOUT Benjamin “saxofshaolin” Chin\nBen Chin\, aka saxofshaolin\, is the confluence between East and West. As a saxophonist\, composer\, and bandleader\, he seeks to merge the musical lineages of his upbringing. He fuses American\, South East Asian\, and Afro-Caribbean music and creates music that sounds like a dance between the ancestors of the three traditions. This is not only an effort to experiment with music but also to find common ground between far-flung cultures. It’s an approach that has developed\, instinctually\, from his experience as an immigrant and a Hakka Chinese\, a nomad by blood. His music is simultaneously traditional and contemporary. Equally aggressive and tasteful. Always danceable and spiritual. \nOutside of saxofshaolin\, Ben is a part of a handful of music and food startups in New York City. Whether it’s via Resonator\, QNA\, Moonlite\, or Bagel Joint\, he integrates his love of culture into every project\, product\, or piece of food. \nBen Chin is a 2024 Artist-in-Residence at the Museum of Chinese in America\, and Google Next Gen Policy Leader.

The first installment of Araki’s “Teenage Apocalypse” trilogy\, the film follows six gay and lesbian teenagers who form a fragile chosen family as they navigate love\, friendship\, and despair in a world that refuses to see them. \nAndy (James Duval) is a vulnerable youth with a James Dean melancholy who believes love doesn’t exist—until he’s swept up by the alluring and more experienced Ian (Alan Boyce). Around them orbit Steven (Gilbert Luna)\, an aspiring filmmaker chronicling their lives; Deric (Lance May)\, Steven’s conflicted boyfriend; Tommy (Roko Belic)\, an easygoing skater; and Patty (Susan Behshid) and Michelle (Jenee Gill)\, a grounded lesbian couple who offer moments of stability within the chaos. Through fragmented vignettes\, confessional interviews\, and Godard-inspired intertitles\, Araki captures the volatility of youth\, the ache of disconnection\, and the will to survive amid systemic rejection. \nPremiering at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival\, Totally F***ed Up became a cornerstone of New Queer Cinema\, establishing Araki as one of its most provocative and visionary voices. Merging punk energy with emotional candor and avant-garde experimentation\, Araki reimagined the American teen movie through a radical queer lens—illuminating the interior lives of young people on the margins and laying the groundwork for a new era of queer independent filmmaking. \nStarring: James Duval\, Susan Behshid\, Jenee Gill\, Gilbert Luna\, Roko Belic \nPOST-FILM CONVERSATION\nStay after the screening for a conversation between MOCA’s Curator Herb Tam and NYAFF’s Executive Director Sam Jamier\, starting at 8:20 PM. Explore the film’s deeper meanings and behind-the-scenes context before engaging in further discussions with fellow attendees over beverages. \n \nABOUT New York Asian Film Festival \nThe New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) is North America’s premier event showcasing the very best in new Asian cinema. Held annually in July at Film at Lincoln Center and various venues across New York City\, NYAFF is celebrated for its bold\, diverse\, and dynamic programming. \nThe festival highlights a wide spectrum of films—from emerging voices to masterful auteurs—spanning genres such as cutting-edge blockbusters\, independent treasures\, and groundbreaking works. \nAs a vital platform for Asian filmmakers\, NYAFF fosters cross-cultural dialogue and champions the innovation\, creativity\, and richness of Asian storytelling on a global stage.

SUMMARY:The Affordability Crisis Facing NYC’s Older Adults (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:New York’s affordability crisis has finally begun to get the attention it deserves. But few New Yorkers feel the strain more acutely than the city’s 1.3 million older adults. Over the past decade\, the number of older adults living in poverty has surged by 41 percent across the five boroughs\, and today 18.4 percent of New Yorkers age 65+ live below the poverty line. Even more alarming\, nearly one in five older adults report no income from Social Security at all—and many others are working longer out of necessity\, struggling to keep up with rising costs and insufficient retirement savings. \nThis forum will explore how city efforts to tackle New York’s affordability crisis can ensure that older adults’ unique cost-of-living challenges are front and center. Panelists will discuss the bold policy actions and investments needed to strengthen financial security\, stabilize incomes\, expand access to vital supports\, and reverse the alarming rise in older adult poverty. \nConfirmed speakers include: \n\nQueens Borough President Donovan Richards\nMurad Awawdeh\, New York Immigration Coalition\nGrace Bonilla\, United Way of New York City\nBeth Finkel\, AARP\nWayne Ho\, Chinese-American Planning Council\nAllison Nickerson\, LiveOn NY

SUMMARY:House of Mirrors: How Mis and Disinformation Amplify Imperialist Histories to Shape Asian American Political Participation
DESCRIPTION:How Mis- and Disinformation Amplify Imperialist Histories to Shape Asian American Political Participation in California’s 45th District\n\n\nHouse of Mirrors: How Mis- and Disinformation Amplify Imperialist Histories to Shape Asian American Political Participation in California’s 45th District \nIn many Asian American spaces\, we are witnessing narrative trends that contribute to tensions within\, across\, and about our communities. This research project seeks to more deeply understand these tensions through a case study of the California 45th congressional district (CA-45) where two Asian American candidates ran in 2024 in a race set against the backdrop of imperialism\, war\, trauma\, displacement\, grief\, healing\, identity-building\, identity politics\, electoral power\, and most of all\, our shared desire to be seen as who we are. \nIn 2024\, CA-45 was the most expensive House race in the country. In the recent special election in November 2025\, Californians passed proposition 50 that authorized the temporary redrawing of district boundaries\, including CA-45. It will be one of the most watched House races in 2026. \nAbout the Instructor: Shengxiao Yu\, known by her nickname Sole\, is a speaker\, facilitator\, writer\, and social justice educator. She is the creator of Nectar\, a space where she provides political education for the community through giving keynote speeches\, facilitating workshops\, and providing thought leadership. In 2024\, Sole served as the activist-in-residence at the Asian American Studies Center at the University of California\, Los Angeles. In this capacity\, Sole conducted research to more deeply understand the AAPI electoral landscape and the role of mis- and disinformation. Sole is a writer for the Xin Sheng Project\, a platform combating misinformation in the Chinese diaspora community by publishing in-language\, progressive articles that shift perspectives and build intergenerational power. As a generation 1.5 Asian American\, Sole is also working to build community among her fellow Asian Americans in order to build socio-political power and to lift up her lineage. Sole is inspired by BIPOC activists\, grassroots community leaders\, and all the intersectional movement ancestors who have paved the way.
