SUMMARY:MOCA TALKS – A Chinese Reformer in Exile: Kang Youwei and the Baohuanghui
DESCRIPTION:Discover the untold story of Kang Youwei’s exile and the Chinese Empire Reform Association in North America.\n\n\n$10 General Admission | $5 Student and Senior Admission | Free for MOCA Members \nHow did a reform movement championed by imperial China’s most famous reformer take root across North America\, and what can it tell us about the birth of modern Chinese politics? Join authors and scholars Robert L. Worden and Jane Leung Larson for an in-depth conversation on their new reference work\, A Chinese Reformer in Exile: Kang Youwei and the Chinese Empire Reform Association in North America\, 1899 to 1911 (Brill\, 2025; Open Access PDF and hardcover). \nDrawing on five decades of scholarship and newly uncovered archives\, Worden and Larson trace how Kang Youwei and the Chinese Empire Reform Association (Baohuanghui) built a transnational network of more than 160 chapters across the United States\, Canada\, and Mexico. These chapters founded schools\, newspapers\, women’s associations\, and political pressure campaigns that advanced the goal of transforming China into a constitutional monarchy. The discussion will examine the Association’s on-the-ground organizing tactics\, its role in pivotal moments such as the 1905 anti-American boycott and constitutional petition drives\, and its enduring impact on Chinese diasporic civic life. \nModerated by Evans Chan\, whose films Chinatopia and Datong: The Great Society and the opera Datong: The Chinese Utopia helped revive global interest in Kang Youwei\, this program offers a rare\, richly documented view of a pivotal moment when overseas Chinese reshaped the political imagination of a nation. \nAbout Robert L. Worden \nRobert L. Worden (b. 1945\, Olean\, NY) is a historian specializing in Chinese and Asian affairs. He earned his B.A. in History from St. Bonaventure University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Asian History from Georgetown University. From 1973 to 2007\, he served in the Library of Congress’s Federal Research Division\, producing over 100 analytical studies and co-authoring or editing eight volumes in the Country Studies Series. He later held leadership roles as Acting Chief of the Asian Division and Chief Operating Officer of the Office of Scholarly Programs. Worden is also the author and editor of several books and numerous articles\, and remains active in community service and heritage work. He and his wife\, Norma Chue\, have three children\, twelve grandchildren\, and three great-grandchildren. \nAbout Jane Leung Larson \nJane Leung Larson is an independent scholar based in Goshen\, MA and New York\, NY. A graduate of Reed College (B.A.\, Anthropology\, 1967)\, she has worked in the China field since 1978\, serving as the founding executive director of the Northwest China Council in Portland\, Oregon (1980–95) and later as an editor with China Institute and the Committee of 100 in New York (2000–13). Since 1985\, she has pursued independent research on Kang Youwei and the Baohuanghui\, beginning with the papers of her grandfather\, Tom Leung (Tan Zhangxiao)\, a student of Kang and Baohuanghui leader in Los Angeles. Her work explores the organization’s global evolution\, its role in the 1905 anti-American boycott\, and the constitutional petition movement. She has presented widely in the US\, Canada\, Singapore\, and China\, and in 2010 launched the blog Baohuanghui Scholarship to foster collaboration in the field. \nAbout Evans Chan 陳耀成 \nA critic\, librettist\, and filmmaker\, Evans Chan has directed 15 award-winning films\, including Journey to Beijing (1998)\, Sorceress of the New Piano (2004)\, and Love and Death in Montmartre (2019). His works have been showcased at major film festivals\, such as Berlin\, Rotterdam\, London\, Moscow\, Vancouver\, San Francisco\, and Taiwan’s Golden Horse\, among others. Time Out named Chan’s directorial debut\, To Liv(e) (1991)\, one of the “100 Greatest Hong Kong Films.” Chan’s two films about Kang Youwei —Chinatopia (2011) and Datong: The Great Society (2011) — as well as the opera Datong: The Chinese Utopia (2015)\, for which he wrote the libretto\, have contributed to the revival of interest in the last reformer of imperial China. \nAbout A Chinese Reformer in Exile \nA Chinese Reformer in Exile: Kang Youwei and the Chinese Empire Reform Association in North America\, 1899–1911 (Leiden: Brill\, 2025; Open Access PDF and Hardcover) is an encyclopedic reference work documenting the exile years of imperial China’s most famous reformer\, Kang Youwei\, and his political organization\, in effect China’s first mass political party. With the goal of transforming China’s autocratic empire into a constitutional monarchy\, the Chinese Empire Reform Association network spawned more than 230 chapters on five continents. North America was where Kang’s organizational achievements were most fully realized. Kang\, his disciples\, and local leaders practiced retail politics by organizing 160 chapters in the U.S.\, Canada\, and Mexico\, and associated schools\, newspapers\, military academies\, women’s associations\, businesses\, and political pressure campaigns. Kang’s most potent contribution to the Chinese polity was his success in rousing Chinese at home and abroad to care about their country’s political future and to act together to further their goals in a constructive way. Based on Robert Worden’s 1972 Georgetown University Ph.D. dissertation\, a multinational team of historians contribute new insights from 50 years of additional scholarship and previously unknown archival materials. \n\n\n\nNot a MOCA member yet? SUMMARY:Film: The Joy Luck Club with Executive Producer Janet Yang
DESCRIPTION:A special screening of The Joy Luck Club\, followed by a talk with Janet Yang\, one of the executive producers.\n\n\nThe Joy Luck Club (1993) \nDirected by: Wayne Wang\nRuntime: 139 minutes | Rated: R\nCast: Tamlyn Tomita\, Kieu Chinh\, Tsai Chin\, France Nuyen\, Lisa Lu \nBased on Amy Tan’s bestselling novel\, The Joy Luck Club unfolds the stories of four Chinese American women and their immigrant mothers\, weaving together memory and generational experience to reveal the challenges of identity\, love\, sacrifice\, and belonging. Directed by Wayne Wang\, the film was groundbreaking as one of the first major Hollywood productions to center Asian American lives and feature a predominantly Asian cast. More than thirty years later\, it continues to resonate as a touchstone for Asian American representation in cinema. \nEarlier this year\, MOCA proudly presented a screening of Wayne Wang’s Chan Is Missing (1982)\, widely considered the first Asian American feature film to gain national recognition. With this special screening of The Joy Luck Club\, MOCA continues its commitment to preserving and advocating for the legacy of Asian American cinema\, offering audiences an opportunity to revisit and reflect on this landmark work. \nFollowing the screening\, Janet Yang—one of the film’s executive producers and a trailblazing figure in the industry—will join us for a post-screening conversation about the making of the film and its enduring impact on Hollywood and Asian American storytelling. \n  \nBecome A MOCA Member

SUMMARY:PÀO PÀO: A Fermentation Make & Taste Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Make your own paocai 泡菜! Taste preserved veggies\, learn Chinese pickling traditions\, and take home a jar from this hands-on workshop. \n\nThis workshop includes a tasting of preserved vegetables from Chinatown and hands-on instruction on how to make paocai. You will go home with your own paocai guan (traditional Chinese pickling jar) filled with veggies & spices.\n\n\n\nThere are two time slots for this workshop: Session 1 is from 11:00AM – 12:30PM | Session 2 is from 2:30-4PM \nJoin us at Think!Chinatown for a hands-on paocai 泡菜 workshop. We’re excited to welcome food writer and fermentation instructor Jess Eng (@goudatalks) to guide us through paocai\, a centuries-old style of lacto-fermenting pickling that remains a cornerstone of many kitchens across the Chinese diaspora today. \nTogether\, we’ll sample a selection of pickles and preserved vegetables sourced from neighborhood small businesses here in Chinatown. Along the way\, you’ll learn how these savory\, tangy creations are used in everyday cooking\, and discover brands and ingredients you can bring into your own kitchen directly from local shops. \nEach participant will assemble their own jar of lacto-fermented vegetables in a traditional paocai jar to take home\, and will leave with the knowledge to continue fermenting beyond the workshop. \nPlease note: \n\nThis workshop is designed for adults\, but children over the age of 10 are welcome if they are able to participate in a “grown-up” setting and if they are accompanied by an adult. Every person will require a ticket.\nIt is also intended for our community and folks curious to learn more about paocai. Our workshop is not designed as a corporate team-building activity. For large groups of more than four people\, please email us in advance to inquire about availability. We’d love to connect!\n\nEarly Bird Sliding Scale Tickets: $45-55General Admission Tickets: $65 \nAbout the instructor: Jess Eng is a food and culture writer based in New York. SUMMARY:Agbayani Worship: the Problematics of a Filipino Captain America (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Vina Orden examines how narratives in popular media can perpetuate or challenge existing power structures and colonial mentalities.\nVina Orden will present on her essay in CUNY FORUM Volume 11:1\, examining how narratives in popular media can perpetuate or challenge existing power structures and colonial mentalities. Orden explores this through the complex dynamics behind the pop culture success of comics like “The United States of Captain America.” Her analysis delves into the diverse creative team behind these comics\, including queer\, Filipino\, First Nation\, and South African writers. And she critically questions whether Captain America\, despite such diverse creative input\, must still operate within a context of “imperial power dynamics” and the realities of the U.S. nation state.\n\nVina Orden is a writer based in Lenapehoking/New York City whose work has appeared in Asian Journal\, CUNY FORUM\, The FilAm\, The Halo-Halo Review\, hella pinay\, Hyperallergic\, and The Margins. As senior poetry editor at Slant’d magazine\, Vina supports and amplifies other emerging Asian American writers. She is a 2025 VONA Poetry Residency Fellow and has received fellowships from the Asian American Writers’ Workshop\, Kweli\, Roots. Wounds. Words.\, and Tin House. She also is working on her first novel for young adults.

SUMMARY:Author Panel: Minh Nguyen\, Memorial Park: Revisiting Vietnam
DESCRIPTION:Launch of book by Minh Nguyen\, with Catherine Quan Damman\, Kaleem Hawa\, Yasmina Price\, and Mark Tseng-Putterman\n\n\nJoin us at e-flux on Tuesday\, October 23 at 7pm for a reading and conversation with Minh Nguyen on the occasion of her new book\, Memorial Park: Revisiting Vietnam\, released by Art Metropole and Wendy’s Subway. Nguyen will read and present from the chapter of the book on art and censorship\, followed by remarks and a conversation with Catherine Quan Damman\, Kaleem Hawa\, Yasmina Price\, and Mark Tseng-Putterman. \nFifty years after the Fall of Saigon and twenty years after her family’s emigration to America\, Minh Nguyen returns to her native Vietnam to find out what’s left of the old revolutionary project. In Memorial Park\, a collection of essays pairing travelogue and criticism\, Nguyen encounters relics of proletarian romance and vestiges of authoritarian control amid an evermore corporatized society. Along the way\, she considers how contemporary artspeak confuses state censors\, the rise of luxury “Smart Cities” as they supplant socialist housing complexes\, and the enduring appeal of propaganda signs that once promised utopia. \nDriven by a diasporic curiosity that seeks discovery over dwelling on loss\, Memorial Park avoids nostalgic idealism or reflexive condemnation. Instead\, Nguyen takes seriously the legacy of Vietnamese liberation by naming what it has become—and what it has not. What emerges is a complex picture of the country today and a reflection on how we inherit and reckon with radical histories that shape our world. \nBios \nMinh Nguyen is a writer and curator based between New York City and Ho Chi Minh City. She is the curator of Dogma\, a collection and gallery in HCMC focused on art and political graphics\, and managing editor of e-flux journal. Her book Memorial Park is out with Wendy’s Subway and Art Metropole. \nCatherine Quan Damman is an art historian and critic; she holds the Valeria Napoleone Linda Nochlin Professorship at the Institute of Fine Arts\, New York University\, where she is Assistant Professor in Modern and Contemporary Art. Her first book\, Performance: A Deceptive History\, is forthcoming with Princeton University Press in early 2027. \nKaleem Hawa is a writer and researcher living in New York. His book on the Palestinian captives’ movement\, Like a Bag Trying to Empty\, was published by Wendy’s Subway last year. \nYasmina Price is a New York–based writer and film programmer completing a PhD at Yale University. She is devoted to visual culture from the African continent and diaspora\, anti-colonial cinema\, and the experimental practices of women artists. Her programming has been featured at Anthology Film Archives\, Light Industry\, Maysles Documentary Center\, e-flux\, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music\, New York; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Pan African Film & Arts Festival\, Los Angeles; and The National Gallery of Art\, D.C. Her writing has appeared in edited volumes and museum catalogues\, with essays in The Nation\, The Baffler\, MUBI’s Notebook\, Hammer & Hope\, Criterion’s Current\, Film Quarterly and World Records Journal. \nMark Tseng-Putterman is a writer\, historian\, and educator based in New York City. His work focuses on how US empire has shaped the politics of Asian American belonging during the unfinished Cold War. His manuscript-in-progress\, Cold War Diaspora\, draws on several years of archival research and oral histories to trace how Chinese\, Filipino\, and Japanese American communities navigated the colliding projects of racial inclusion and diasporic nationalism during the 1950s–1980s. His writing has appeared in publications such as The Atlantic\, Los Angeles Review of Books\, and Boston Review. He is co-editor of a new collection on contemporary Asian American grassroots activism\, Asian America Rising\, published in September by New York University Press\, and is currently a Visiting Scholar at the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU. \nFor more information\, please contact program@e-flux.com. \nAccessibility\n–Two flights of stairs lead up to the building’s front entrance at 172 Classon Avenue.\n–For elevator access\, please RSVP to program@e-flux.com. SUMMARY:MOCA Queer StoryJAM #5 – In-Between
DESCRIPTION:This storytelling program fosters understanding and builds connections across communities by amplifying the voices of queer Asian Americans.\n\n\nWe live at the intersection. We are Asian and American. To friends\, we may be out; to family\, perhaps not. In-betweenness is where the tug-of-war lives—between identities\, expectations\, and choices. But must we choose? \nMOCA Queer StoryJAM returns for another heartfelt gathering. This storytelling program fosters understanding and builds connections across communities by amplifying the voices of queer Asian Americans. This time\, we’re exploring IN-BETWEEN—the daily push and pull of navigating multiple identities. Presented in conjunction with MOCA’s special exhibition hapa.me\, the program also invites deeper reflection on mixed-race identity. \nThrough personal narratives\, LGBTQ+ Asian American storytellers will offer nuanced perspectives on intersectionality and belonging. Afterward\, audience members are invited to share their own stories. Join us for an evening of storytelling\, reflection\, and connection.
