SUMMARY:MOCA TALKS: Hyphen Reunion with Co-Founders Melissa Hung and Bernice Yeung
DESCRIPTION:A celebratory event for Hyphen readers\, contributors\, and community members to reconnect and share stories!\n\n\nThe Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) warmly invites you to an insightful conversation with Melissa Hung and Bernice Yeung\, co-founders of Hyphen magazine. Established in 2002 as a direct response to the closure of A. Magazine\, Hyphen emerged from the collective vision of a new generation of Asian American voices. \nMelissa Hung and Bernice Yeung\, friends since their college days at Northwestern University\, were deeply saddened by the shuttering of this influential publication. Determined to address this void\, they convened a gathering of writers and scholars—including Chris Fan\, Claire Light\, and Oliver Wang—in San Francisco. From this pivotal meeting\, the concept of Hyphen magazine was born. Its name symbolizes the intersectionality of identities and the connections within the Asian American community. Hyphen challenged stereotypical portrayals of Asian Americans by skillfully blending rigorous investigative journalism with creative and offbeat cultural coverage. \nFollowing the discussion\, a reunion reception will provide an opportunity for Hyphen readers\, contributors\, and community members to reconnect\, share stories\, and explore MOCA’s special exhibition\, Magazine Fever: Gen X Asian American Periodicals: \nIn the 1980s and ’90s\, as Asian American identity transformed from a radical vision born of political agitation into a broadly recognized demographic\, how did ethnic magazines reflect this new consciousness? Magazine Fever surveys a surge of Asian American magazine publishing during the multicultural era including A. Magazine\, AsiAm\, AsianWeek\, Audrey\, Giant Robot\, Hyphen\, Jade\, KoreAm\, Rice\, Transpacific\, YOLK\, and others. Through magazine publishing\, a vital form of mass media in the 1990s\, Asian Americans editorialized issues central to their lives and depicted themselves in ways that were unimaginable before. Magazine Fever presents stories of Generation X magazines–how they were founded and sustained; how they captured the essence of multiculturalism and Generation X paradigms\, and how they impacted the ways Asian American identity is understood today. \nAbout Melissa Hung \nMelissa Hung is a writer and journalist. She is the founding editor in chief of Hyphen and served in leadership roles at the independent magazine for more than a decade. Melissa writes about immigrant communities\, culture\, food\, disability\, grief\, and more. Her essays and reported stories have appeared in NPR\, Vogue\, Longreads\, and the anthologies Body Language and Disability Intimacy. A 2024 Sewanee Scholar\, she is at work on a collection of creative nonfiction about her mother and inheritance. She grew up in Houston\, Texas\, the eldest child of Chinese immigrants. \nAbout Bernice Yeung \nBernice Yeung is a co-founder and former board member of Hyphen\, and has contributed to Asian American media outlets such as A. Magazine and public radio’s “Pacific Time.” Currently\, she’s the managing editor of the Investigative Reporting Program at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism. Before that\, she was a reporter for ProPublica and “Reveal” from The Center for Investigative Reporting. The author of In a Day’s Work: The Fight to End Sexual Violence Against America’s Most Vulnerable Workers\, Bernice’s work has appeared in The New Yorker\, The New York Times and PBS Frontline. She grew up in San Jose\, California\, to immigrants from Hong Kong.

SUMMARY:MOCA TALKS – Subversities: Interventions in Queer Activism Past & Present
DESCRIPTION:Daniel C. Tsang\, a pioneering LGBTQ+ activist\, will reflect on fifty years of activism.\n\n\nCan’t attend in person? Join us online. \nThe Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) is honored to partner with the American LGBTQ+ Museum and Asian American / Asian Research Institute – CUNY to welcome Daniel C. Tsang\, a pioneering LGBTQ+ activist\, for a special conversation reflecting on his fifty years of activism. In his groundbreaking article Gay Awareness\, published in Bridge Magazine (February 1975)\, one of the earliest pieces to openly discuss LGBTQ+ issues within the Asian American community\, he wrote: \nGay people have long been misunderstood by society. They have been ridiculed\, discriminated against\, and rejected\, even by their own families. It is time that we confront these realities\, challenge these prejudices\, and create spaces where we can live openly and with dignity. \nAt a time when such discussions were rare\, Tsang’s words served as a powerful call to action\, igniting dialogue and increasing visibility for LGBTQ+ Asian Americans. His activism continued with Gay Insurgent\, a radical queer journal he co-founded in 1980\, which provided a platform for intersectional voices challenging mainstream narratives on gender\, sexuality\, and racial justice. As an archivist\, journalist\, and scholar\, Tsang has remained at the forefront of advocacy\, shaping discussions on intersectionality and community empowerment. \nIn this program\, Tsang will reflect on the evolution of LGBTQ+ rights over the past 50 years\, his contributions to activism\, and the ongoing challenges faced by the community today. The conversation will be moderated by Herb Tam\, MOCA’s Chief Curator and Senior Director of Exhibitions and Programs\, and will be followed by a Q&A session\, offering the audience an opportunity to engage directly with Tsang’s insights and experiences. SUMMARY:Talking Our Way To Justice: Civic Dialogue for Building the Future
DESCRIPTION:Join us in a conversation about the central role that dialogue has in advancing justice.\n\n\nThis session is open to all\, but there is a limit on the number of participants. Please add yourself to the waitlist if the capacity is full\, and please cancel your registration if you know you will not be able to attend so we can offer the spot to someone else. Thank you! \n \nTalking Our Way To Justice: Civic Dialogue for Building the Future \nWe have likely all had experiences where the reason we left a movement or organization was not because of the mission\, but because of how difficult it felt to work with the other people in the movement. The central problem with the ethic of “less talk\, more action” is that human action goes through human communities. Therefore\, there is no non-authoritarian pathway toward justice that does not at some point include bringing people together to talk about hard problems and develop collective solutions. \nHowever\, these conversations can be extraordinarily challenging\, and continued failures in these conversations leads to organizational failure\, individual disinvestment\, and burnout. It can be easy to conclude that the problem is simply that people are bad\, inefficient\, and self-absorbed\, but it is much more helpful to consider that communication about things that are important to us is more difficult than we might like to imagine. \nIn this session\, we will re-center talk as a critical component of justice work\, validate the skills and dispositions people need to develop (that most of us have not) in order to have dialogue about justice\, and work through processes that been used across communities to help people come together to develop civic solutions that advance justice. \n \nMeet the Instructor: \nRicky Blissett is the Associate Director of the Center for Democracy and Civic Life at the University of Maryland\, Baltimore County. Both within and outside of their role at UMBC\, their research primarily focuses on attitudes and ideologies in the politics of educational equity and justice\, as well as the spaces in which public ideologies translate into policy action. Their expertise includes educational politics and governance\, ideological politics of race- and gender-conscious policy\, and program evaluation and research methodology. Further\, they are a dialogue facilitator with training in conflict mediation and multiple models of dialogue. They are the principal investigator of the Democracy and Equity in Education Politics research group\, program co-chair for the Policy and Politics division (L) of the American Educational Research Association\, and principal coordinator for the Just Education Policy institute. Ricky holds a Ph.D. in Leadership and Policy Studies (with a minor in Quantitative Methods) from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University\, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (with a minor in Computer Science) from the University of Maryland\, Baltimore County.
