SUMMARY:We Keep Us Safe: A Digital Security and Abolition Primer
DESCRIPTION:During this webinar\, we will explore how we can ground ourselves in abolitionist praxis as the digital world continues to evolve.\n\n\nWe are living in a digital age where anti-democratic leaders have leveraged technology to perpetuate and enact state violence and encroach on our freedoms. During this webinar\, we will explore how we can ground ourselves in abolitionist praxis as the digital world continues to evolve and as online threats to social justice activism and organizing increase. A volatile election season is upon us\, making it all the more important for our communities and allies to know how to better protect themselves online. While our ever evolving digital landscape and international access to social media platforms can empower progressive activists like ourselves to organize\, they also aid in the spread of misinformation—which poses an increasing risk to democracy and equity. Disenfranchised groups are disproportionately impacted by digital security threats\, making digital violence a threat to civil rights. In this webinar\, we will discuss the current landscape of digitals security risks as well as practical tips and resources our community members can use to protect themselves from digital harm. We will also define abolition and its relation to digital security frameworks in today’s movement spaces and educational institutions. \nAbout the panelists: \nAlison Macrina: Alison Macrina is an activist librarian and the director of Library Freedom Project. Alison started LFP in 2015 to organize and build community with other librarians who are dedicated to library values of privacy\, intellectual freedom\, social responsibility\, and the public good. \nPraveen Sinha: Praveen is an activist and engineer who believes technology should always be a force for the people. He is a security director and loves helping people get through tough situations. \nSammy John: Sammy is an open-source intelligence researcher whose work involves gathering broad landscapes around digital threat monitoring. Sammy is an advocate for digital resilience and enjoys helping movement-aligned organizations protect their rights in the digital age. \nSome key questions we will address include: \n\nWhat is abolition and how does it relate to our work? How does it apply to digital security frameworks?\nHow might abolitionist praxis facilitate freedom and safety in our digital security strategies?\nWhy might certain individuals be targeted online and what is the current landscape of digital attacks against activists?\nWhat is the current digital security landscape looking like for movement organizations?\nHow can students protect themselves\, their spaces\, and their advocacy on campus?\nWhat is the influence or impact of tech on politics?\nHow can we identify misinformation and what can we do about it?\nWhat practical tips can you provide people (but especially BIPOC activists) to safeguard their identities and personal information online?

SUMMARY:MOCA TALKS with Mimi Kwa – House of Kwa
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this captivating discussion that uncovers a deeply personal journey of thriving through adversity!\n\n\nCan’t attend in person? Register for virtual participation \nThe Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) cordially invites you to an insightful discussion with Mimi Kwa\, author of the best selling memoir House of Kwa. Kwa\, a journalist and news anchor for two decades\, reveals a life behind the camera that is far stranger than anything she has reported on. When her own father sued her\, turning her hair grey overnight\, Kwa delved into her rich family history to understand her complicated relationship with her father\, Francis. \nRiveting\, colorful\, and often darkly humorous\, House of Kwa is an epic story spanning four generations of Kwa’s Chinese family. From the imperial compound in Beijing\, down the silk and opium road to Southern China\, and across to Hong Kong\, it is an unforgettable tale of one woman’s courage to stand up to a lifetime of bullying and prejudice. Throughout her journey\, Kwa finds inspiration in her father’s late older sister\, the jet-setting\, free-spirited Aunt Theresa\, whose extraordinary life serves as a beacon of hope. \nThe conversation will be moderated by Yifan Wu\, MOCA’s Director of Programs. Join us for this captivating discussion that uncovers a deeply personal journey of surviving against the odds and thriving through adversity. \nAbout Mimi Kwa \n25 years on TV\, Mimi Kwa has cracked up John Cleese\, and Serena Williams says Mimi’s interview was the best one she had ever done. But behind the scenes of Mimi’s glamorous and polished on-air appearance is a story of surviving against the odds. As a keynote speaker\, Mimi speaks about thriving through adversity\, sharing her deeply personal journey with humor and heart. Her life story is so extraordinary\, it’s being adapted for the screen. The former Head of Disney Creativity says\, “Mimi’s storytelling rivals my friends at PIXAR\,” and Crazy Rich Asians 2 writer Amy Wang calls Mimi’s book a “must read.” As an MC\, she brings warmth and poise\, along with her veteran ABC newsreader and Channel Nine journalist skills\, to the stage. She is also an accredited mindfulness meditation teacher.

SUMMARY:Opening for Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City
DESCRIPTION:Organized by Howie Chen\, Jayne Cole Southard\, and christina ong. Co-sponsored by the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU. \nLegacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001) is an expansive survey of rarely-seen artwork and archival material by artists that constitute and exceed “Asian American\,” a label denoting a cultural and national identity invented in 1968. Utilizing an interdisciplinary and research-driven praxis\, Legacies uncovers how artists of Asian descent have historically negotiated identity in America as a set of situated practices and institutional structures amidst transnational diasporas\, racial phantasms\, and political imaginaries. \nThe exhibition opens with a reception on Wednesday\, September 11\, 2024. No registration is required. \nAccessibility note: The gallery is wheelchair accessible via the gallery entrance at 80 Washington Square East\, and has all gender restrooms. Please contact 80wse@nyu.edu with any access needs. \n\n  \n  \n\nImage credit: Hanh Thi Pham\, Self Portrait/Hairy/Pipe\, 1985.

SUMMARY:MOCA PERFORMS - Tomorrow\, by the Sea
DESCRIPTION:This musical reading revisits Japan’s tragic 2011 earthquake and explores the process of healing through cultural practices during Obon.\n\n\nThe Museum of Chinese in America is excited to present a staged reading of a new musical\, Tomorrow\, by the Sea\, by Yunhye Park (book\, lyrics)\, Alexander Ronneburg (music\, book\, lyrics)\, and Erika Ito (music). This poignant work revisits the tragic 2011 earthquake in Japan and explores the process of healing through cultural practices during Obon\, a festival that honors the spirits of ancestors. \nWorshiping ancestors and venerating the deceased are longstanding traditions in Chinese culture. Festivals such as the Qingming Festival and Ghost Festival (commonly known as Zhongyuan Festival) include rituals of veneration. This cultural practice is shared by many other Asian cultures. In Japan\, the Festival of Obon\, derived from Buddhism\, is a custom for honoring the spirits of one’s ancestors and traditionally takes place in mid-August. It has been celebrated in Japan and by the Japanese diaspora for over 500 years. \nTomorrow\, by the Sea is set during the festival of Obon\, seven years after the devastating 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The musical follows train officers who care for the suspended train stations following the nuclear disaster. The officer Semi\, who lost his girlfriend in the tragedy\, is still processing his loss. During the preparations for Obon\, a mysterious guest arrives at the station\, unexpectedly entering his life. \nRun Time: approx. 90 minutes \n \nABOUT Creative Team\nYunhye Park (book\, lyrics) \nYunhye Park is a playwright/lyricist/dramaturg who was born and raised in Seoul\, South Korea and resides in New York City.
