SUMMARY:Book Launch | To Grieve Is to Carry Another Time by Matthew Salesses
DESCRIPTION:From the critically acclaimed author of The Sense of Wonder and Craft in the Real World comes a deeply personal\, poignant memoir\, weaving together Salesses’ multiple identities: adoptee\, Asian American\, husband\, father\, and\, finally\, widower. \nMatthew Salesses has spent his career writing about the power of storytelling\, but he wasn’t prepared for the story of his own life to fall apart. A Korean American adoptee\, Salesses grew up unsure of who he was—until he fell in love and started a family with a native Korean\, Cathreen. But when Cathreen was diagnosed with stage four stomach cancer\, the map they made together suddenly led nowhere. After her untimely death\, Salesses realized he would need new paths\, new stories\, new philosophies\, new ways of understanding the world\, to navigate the unknown landscape of loss. \nTo Grieve Is To Carry Another Time is a stunning\, thought-provoking meditation on what grief can offer the grieving\, illuminating the way to embracing yourself\, finding your community\, and even loving and changing the world. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nMatthew Salesses is the author of The Sense of Wonder (Little\, Brown\, 2023)\, Craft in the Real World (Catapult Books\, 2021)\, Disappear Doppelgänger Disappear (Little A\, 2020)\, and other books. He was adopted from Korea and lives in Blacksburg\, VA\, where he is an Associate Professor of Creative Writing in the Virginia Tech MFA Program. \nIN CONVERSATION WITH \nKirstin Chen is the New York Times best-selling author of four novels\, including Counterfeit\, a Reese Witherspoon book club pick\, a Roxane Gay book club pick\, and a New York Times Editors’ Choice. Her latest\, Tech Wives\, is forthcoming in April.

SUMMARY:Saigon
DESCRIPTION:In a bustling restaurant in both 1950s Vietnam and 1990s France\, strangers gather to eat\, drink\, sing\, argue\, remember\, and mourn. Across decades and continents\, lives intersect as people reckon with exile\, longing\, and the lasting impact of history. \nCreated by acclaimed director Caroline Guiela Nguyen\, Saigon is an epic and deeply personal portrait of migration\, memory\, and belonging. As characters search for lost homes\, lost loves\, and lost versions of themselves\, ordinary encounters unfold into a sweeping story of resilience and connection. \nBy turns intimate and expansive\, joyful and heartbreaking\, Saigon is a richly diverse theatrical experience that celebrates the lives shaped by movement across borders and generations.

SUMMARY:The Art of Chinese Tea: From Ancient Wisdom to Modern Living
DESCRIPTION:A cup of tea can offer much more than refreshment. It can evoke memories of home\, bring people together\, and create a moment of quiet in a busy day. In this accessible talk\, tea culture scholar Liu Feng will explore how Chinese tea traditions bring beauty\, thoughtfulness\, and a sense of balance to everyday life. \nBeginning with the familiar act of brewing and drinking tea\, Dr. Liu will introduce the aesthetics of Chinese tea as an experience shaped by the senses\, surroundings\, and human relationships. What draws us to a particular teacup? How do light\, color\, and the arrangement of a tea table influence our mood? How can sharing tea become an expression of hospitality and care? For Chinese Americans\, these questions also open a conversation about cultural heritage and the traditions we pass from one generation to the next. \nThe talk will trace these ideas to the Tang dynasty writer Lu Yu and his Classic of Tea\, a foundational work in the history of tea culture. Through stories and examples\, Liu will discuss how this classic connects the practical details of preparing tea with ideals of attentive conduct\, simplicity\, and personal cultivation. \nLiu will also explore the influence of Confucian\, Daoist\, and Buddhist thought on Chinese tea traditions. Courtesy and harmony\, an appreciation of nature\, and a contemplative awareness of the present all find expression in the ways people prepare\, serve\, and enjoy tea. These ideas come to life in familiar settings: welcoming a guest\, sharing a pot with family\, or sitting quietly with a cup of one’s own. \nMoving from philosophy to practice\, Liu will consider the beauty of teaware\, the composition of a tea setting\, the atmosphere of a tea space\, and the gestures and sensibilities of the person preparing tea. He will also invite listeners to consider how a tea’s color\, aroma\, flavor\, and lingering finish deepen the experience of tasting. Drawing on his work sharing Chinese tea culture internationally\, he will explore how these traditions can enrich contemporary life across cultures. \nThe program will conclude with a question-and-answer session on tea\, teaware\, etiquette\, and everyday tea practices. Longtime tea enthusiasts and curious beginners alike are welcome.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Min Jin Lee | Fundraiser for New Life Community Development
DESCRIPTION:This event is benefiting New Life Community Development Corporation\, a 501c3 nonprofit serving low income individuals in Elmhurst and Corona. \nDoors open at 6:30! \nJoin Min Jin Lee in conversation with Lucy Yu in the bestselling author’s very own hometown of Elmhurst\, NY\, to celebrate the arrival of her latest novel American Hagwon\, and to fundraise for an Elmhurst-based non-profit. \nTicket price will include a signed copy and a donation to New Life Community Development Corporation\, a 501c3 organization serving low income individuals in Elmhurst and Corona with a food pantry\, health center\, financial literacy\, and social emotional wellness programming. \n10% of each purchased copy of American Hagwon will also be donated towards New Life Community Development Corporation. \nABOUT THE BOOK \nThe National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestselling author of Pachinko returns with a breathtaking contemporary epic: a masterpiece by turns sweeping and intimate\, that reckons with ambition and moderation\, lust and loyalty\, personal dreams and familial duty. \nMin Jin Lee brings grand ambition\, fierce heart\, and the tenderest hope to a novel I didn’t want to end.” —Roxane Gay\, bestselling author of Bad Feminist and Hunger \nIn schools and churches\, hotel rooms and nail salons\, law firms and fried-fish shops; in cramped\, dingy apartments and luxury\, gated communities\, the men\, women\, and children in American Hagwon struggle to find satisfaction and meaning in a world that seems to grow less forgiving with each passing year. Once comfortably middle class in Korea\, John and Helen Koh and their three children—Bo\, DH\, and Mido—find their lives upended\, first by a shocking betrayal by John’s oldest friend\, then by the 1997 Asian financial crisis. \nDesperately striving to regain their footing\, they leave Seoul for Sydney and eventually settle in Southern California—where new vistas of opportunity open up for the children as their parents\, strangers in a strange land\, must adjust to a new life in which their experience and education mean little\, and they set their sights on whatever it takes to provide for their children’s futures. The Kohs\, their friends\, relatives\, and even their foes move in and out of each other’s lives as they navigate new courses across the years\, always nursing the almost all-consuming faith that education will lead the next generation to success and security. \nIn American Hagwon\, Min Jin Lee has crafted an unforgettable\, panoramic novel where the smallest of gestures can have enormous repercussions\, where the bonds of family and of memory twist and fray but rarely break\, and where willful self-sacrifice—for the benefit of loved ones and even strangers—is a kind of prayer. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nMin Jin Lee was born in Seoul\, South Korea and immigrated to Queens\, New York with her family when she was seven years old. She is a writer whose award-winning fiction explores the intersection of race\, ethnicity\, immigration\, class\, religion\, gender\, and identity of a diasporic people. \nLee’s debut novel Free Food for Millionaires (2007) was a Top 10 Books of the Year for The Times of London\, NPR’s Fresh Air\, USA Today\, and a national bestseller. Pachinko\, her second novel\, is an epic story which follows a Korean family who migrates to Japan; it is the first novel written for an adult\, English-speaking audience about the Korean-Japanese people. Pachinko was a finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction\, runner-up for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize\, winner of the Medici Book Club Prize\, a New York Times 10 Best Books of 2017\, and is one of Kirkus Review’s Best Books of the 21st Century (So Far). A New York Times Bestseller\, Pachinko was also a Top 10 Books of the Year for the BBC\, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation\, and the New York Public Library. Pachinko was a selection for “Now Read This\,” the joint book club of PBS NewsHour and The New York Times. It was on over 75 best books of the year lists\, including NPR\, PBS\, and CNN. Pachinko has been translated into over 35 languages and is an international bestseller. President Barack Obama selected Pachinko for his recommended reading list\, calling it\, “a powerful story about resilience and compassion.” In 2024 Pachinko (#15) was named one of the New York Times Book Review’s 100 Best Books of the 21st Century. \nIN CONVERSATION WITH \nLucy Yu is a writer and multi-disciplinary artist living in Brooklyn\, New York. SUMMARY:White Stones
DESCRIPTION:A stone can mark a boundary. Or it can open one… Japanese-American musician Kaoru Watanabe and Lakota performance/visual artist Kite (Suzanne Kite) bring two inheritances together\, asking what it means to seek ancestral guidance in a country built on forgetting. On Japanese drums\, flute\, koto\, voice\, violin\, electronics and invented instruments\, they weave a soundscape moving between meditative stillness and ritual intensity\, while Kite’s sovereign AI\, built entirely from Indigenous worldviews and ancestral stories\, shapes what unfolds in real time. Drawing on the sacred vocabularies of Noh theater and Lakota ceremonial practice — both centered on stone\, here cast in patterns across the performance space — the artists forge the friction of these visions into something neither tradition could reach alone.

Blending Bharatanatyam\, Sanskrit poetry\, and a commissioned score\, Jiva Dance brings Indian classical dance thrillingly into the present. \n“Portal” by Vivake Khamsingsavath\nVivake debuted in 2013\, with a cast of 10\, and reviews that read “Darkly Alluring”\, “Sensuous energy”\, “Super smooth Gotham-movers”. SUMMARY:AAPI Dance Festival: Rising Stars
DESCRIPTION:Asian American Arts Alliance (A4) and Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company are pleased to present the AAPI Dance Festival\, featuring three compelling sets of performances by AAPI choreographers and dancers staged across two days. Rising Stars will feature dynamic performances from Jiemin Yang\, Chisato Fujii\, DRWN\, Samanvita Kasthuri\, Chia-Ying Kao Dance\, and Ah-Molla Dance Collective (AMDC). \nThe AAPI dance festival is an annual celebration of dance and choreography that highlights the artistry and innovation of choreographers of Asian descent\, presented as part of the Dance Managers Collective’s Association of Performing Arts Professionals (APAP) showcase. \nThe AAPI Dance Festival is made possible with support from the CJ Huang Foundation\, Howard Gilman Foundation\, Mertz Gilmore Foundation\, Nai-Ni Chen Dance Foundation\, National Endowment for the Arts\, New Jersey Cultural Trust\, New Jersey State Council on the Arts\, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs\, New York State Council on the Arts\, and individual donors like you. \nThank you to production community partner Queensboro Dance Festival for their support at the Rising Stars showcase at City Center. \nThis event is ticketed and open to the public. Admission to one performance is $25. Receive a discount when you attend all three performances with a full-festival pass for $50. \n“Portraits of the Moon” (Excerpt) by Jiemin Yang in collaboration with dancers\n“Portraits of the Moon” traces the ache of separation and hope of reunion through movement\, live testimony\, and original music. Drawing on Chang’e’s myth\, classical poetry\, and immigrant memory\, this dance work follows the moon’s pull across distance—a luminous thread connecting memory\, family\, and homeland. \n“hello !” Chisato Fujii\nA newborn emerges from her mother’s womb and meets a world that is raw\, vivid\, and intensely fresh. Through the pains and sorrows of living\, the vitality of youth\, and the body that carries her\, she discovers the joy of existence and celebrates the wonder of being alive. \n“gunwale” by DRWN\ngunwale: the top edge of the hull of a boat. The sound composition\, “Untitled\,” was created by Jasmine Hastings and Conor Elmes of Clitoris\, based in Drogheda\, Ireland. \n“Ghungroo” by Samanvita Kasthuri\n“Ghungroo” is a confrontation of the need for Samanvita to create her own path as an Indian Contemporary dancer. This piece takes inspiration from her experiences as an Indian classically trained dancer in the Contemporary dance community\, which is predominantly made up of trained Western concert dancers. “Ghungroo” takes you on a journey of introspection\, loss\, confusion\, joy\, community\, and finally\, a discovery of love. \n“Fugue for Shadow and Bone” by Chia-Ying Kao Dance\nA startlingly intimate solo\, “Fugue for Shadow and Bone” traces what the body remembers when language fails. Gestures inherited across generations surface and dissolve\, carried by a live score from bassist/composer Giacomo Merega. The work will make its U.S. premiere following its November 2026 performances at The 4th Kyoto International Butoh Festival and JOGONIN International Art Festival. \n“초희|Chohui” by Ah-Molla Dance Collective (AMDC)\n“초희|Chohui” is an evocative dance work inspired by the life of Heo Nanseolheon\, a pioneering Korean poet and artist whose brilliance was constrained by the expectations of her time. Blending contemporary movement\, Korean traditional aesthetics\, and visceral storytelling\, “초희|Chohui” celebrates her legacy through themes of artistry\, womanhood\, resilience\, and freedom.

Through choreography and spoken word\, Shah offers personal counter-narratives. \n“ELSEWHERE” by YY Dance Company\nELSEWHERE is a 70-minute\, full-length dance work that received its world premiere as part of 92NY’s 2025 Women Move the World season.
