SUMMARY:An Evening of Film and the Power of Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Film Screening & Conversation: The Bengali\nPart of the #UnderOurSun Impact Campaign \nRSVP Link: https://forms.gle/LKw1uFY6jUvQcP9H6 \nJoin for an evening of film\, conversation\, and community at Turkevi Center (Turkish House) to explore the stories you inherit\, the identities you carry\, and the unexpected connections that shape the world. \nIn The Bengali\, named one of Nonfics’ Top 20 Documentaries\, director Kavery Kaul takes an American woman to India to uncover her grandfather Shaik Mohamed Musa’s past. He was one of the early group of men who arrived in the late nineteenth century and married African American women. Her unlikely quest triggers a boldly different encounter between East and West. A personal search becomes a deeper journey into culture\, memory\, and identity\, breaking barriers and building bridges\, revealing how histories travel\, and families form across unexpected places. \nThe Bengali has inspired the @Under.Our.Sun impact campaign\, a digital storytelling movement that invites everyone to share their own cultural heritage and lived experience. Through in-person screenings\, lively panel discussions\, and digital storytelling\, the campaign sparks timely conversation about migration and belonging. \nThe Alliance of Women Film Journalists calls The Bengali “a lyrical and poetic documentary that shows how stories and presumptions can change\, forging connections that are rich and real — not just to the past\, but to the world at large.” \nProgram\n5:30 PM — Reception\n6:00 PM — Film Screening\n7:15 PM — Conversation & Audience Q&A \nFeaturing\nKavery Kaul\, Director\, The Bengali\nGordon Tapper\, President\, Give Them a Hand Foundation\, Former Section Chief\, United Nations\nModerated by Bedatri D. SUMMARY:Puppet Theater: Kojiki de Creation
DESCRIPTION:CONTEMPORARY PUPPET THEATER | WORLD PREMIERE \nThursday\, October 15 at 7:30 pm—Followed by a Private Gathering for Artists and Members\nFriday\, October 16 at 7:30 pm—Preceded by a Pre-Performance Lecture\nSaturday\, October 17 at 7:30 pm—Preceded by a Pre-Performance Lecture\nSunday\, October 18 at 2:30 pm—Followed by an Artist Q&A \nFollowing the acclaim of 2022’s 9000 Paper Balloons\, New York-based puppeteer Maiko Kikuchi returns to Japan Society with Kojiki de Creation — a world premiere animating the gods\, islands\, critters and howling chaos of the Kojiki\, Japan’s oldest mythological chronicle. As a lone reader opens the book\, an ancient world erupts from its pages onto the stage: Kikuchi fashions fearsome Shinto gods from everyday objects and draws primordial creatures into being before your eyes. The result is a theatrical conjuring of the birth of Japan itself — assembled\, with characteristic whimsy\, from paper\, ink and imagination. \nOn Friday\, October 16 and Saturday\, October 17\, a pre-performance lecture on Japanese creation myths and the Kojiki begins at 6:30 pm.

SUMMARY:The 2046: A World of Wong Kar Wai
DESCRIPTION:The Red Pavilion presents The 2046: A World of Wong Kar Wai\, a chamber ensemble experience inspired by the films of Wong Kar Wai. Led by Victor Lin\, the music draws from In the Mood for Love\, 2046\, Days Of Being Wild\, and related works\, shaped by the understated\, recurring motifs that define his cinematic language. \nBuilt on restrained\, cyclical phrasing\, the ensemble moves through slow waltzes and suspended harmonies\, where small shifts in texture carry emotional weight. The sound is intimate and deliberate\, connecting what remains physically separate but emotionally intertwined.  As the music unfolds\, it becomes a point of convergence – where memory\, distance\, and longing gather just beneath the surface\, giving voice to what cannot be expressed openly. \nBring your would-be lover\, your lover’s lover\, or come as your wistful self.\nJust remember: Love is all a matter of timing.\n \n\nWalk-ins welcome pending availability. 2 Drink Minimum per person for table service. 21+ ID Required. All Sales Final.

SUMMARY:Works & Process Presents Minnesota Opera: The Many Deaths of Laila Starr
DESCRIPTION:Works & Process presents The Many Deaths of Laila Starr\, a performance from the Minnesota Opera by Kamala Sankaram and Minita Gandhi on Monday\, October 12\, 2026 at 7PM at the Peter B. Lewis Theater\, 1071 Fifth Avenue\, New York\, NY\, 10128. Tickets start at $15 and can be purchased at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/guggenheim/3515/event/1476994. \nWitness the transformation of BOOM! Studios’ acclaimed graphic novel The Many Deaths of Laila Starr by Ram V. and Filipe Andrade into a vivid and transporting tale for the operatic stage by composer Kamala Sankaram and librettist Minita Gandhi. Commissioned and developed by Minnesota Opera’s groundbreaking New Works Initiative\, the opera explores the blurred boundary between divine and human through the lens of magical realism when the goddess of Death is cast down to Earth to live as a mortal named Laila Starr. \nAhead of the world premiere in Saint Paul join Ram V.\, Sankaram\, Gandhi\, and members of the opera’s creative team––including director Mary Birnbaum\, scenic designer Mimi Lien\, costume designer Oana Botez\, and choreographer Rohit Gijare––for a conversation about their collaborative process\, interwoven with cast members performing excerpts. Infused with elements of Konnakol\, Raga\, and EDM\, this fantasy on purpose and impermanence unfolds with both kinetic energy and striking clarity\, as a god made mortal begins to see the world––and life itself––through fresh eyes. All are invited to continue the conversation at a reception in the rotunda. \nMinnesota Opera’s New Works Initiative is a groundbreaking commissioning program aimed at invigorating the operatic canon with an infusion of contemporary works. Launched in 2008\, it has resulted in the premiere of nine new operas including Silent Night\, The Shining\, Doubt\, Edward Tulane\, The Song Poet\, and more. The initiative is centered around a six-person creative cohort of three composers and three librettists who work in different pairings to collectively create three full-scale operas\, three chamber operas\, and three song cycles. The Many Deaths of Laila Starr is the second opera from the current cohort—composers Kamala Sankaram\, David Hanlon\, and B.E. Boykin and librettists Minita Gandhi\, John de los Santos\, and Harrison David Rivers—to premiere\, following Boykin and Rivers’ My Name is Florence in January 2026.

SUMMARY:The Orchestra Now Celebrates America’s 250th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:As the finale of the ninth season of the China Now Music Festival\, The Orchestra Now tells the story of the Chinese laborers who carved the Transcontinental Railroad out of the Sierra Nevada in the 1860s. Men of Iron and the Golden Spike is a large-scale symphonic oratorio by composer Zhou Long. It is a story of grit and sacrifice that history books have largely left out. This monumental work returns to the stage in New York City after its premiere during the 2019 China Now Music Festival and features a large orchestra\, 120 choristers\, and vocal soloists. \nPaired with it is the US premiere of Chasing the Sky\, a five-movement symphonic suite by Li Shaosheng that turns its gaze upward\, tracing humanity’s dream of reaching the stars\, which explores our enduring fascination with the skies and the journey of space exploration. SUMMARY:America-bound: Lin Huiyin & Liang Sicheng
DESCRIPTION:Over a century ago\, Lin Huiyin (Phyllis Lin) and Liang Sicheng crossed the Pacific to study at the University of Pennsylvania. Their years in the United States broadened their intellectual horizons and profoundly shaped their later contributions to Chinese architectural history\, architectural education\, urban planning\, and the preservation of China’s built heritage. \nOn October 10\, China Institute’s Renwen Society marks this remarkable chapter in their lives with a lecture by Dr. Sidney Wong and Ms. Annie Liang-Zhou. Together\, they revisit the formative years that helped shape two of the most influential figures in modern Chinese architecture. \nThe presentation also examines Lin and Liang’s enduring intellectual connections with American architects\, scholars\, and institutions during the 1930s and 1940s\, highlighting the reciprocal exchange of ideas that enriched both countries. Drawing on original archival research from the University of Pennsylvania and the City of Philadelphia\, Dr. Wong will present newly uncovered documents\, photographs\, and historical records that illuminate this formative period in their lives and reconstruct the remarkable network of people\, places\, and ideas that surrounded their American experience. \nBringing together original archival research with perspectives on historic preservation and family legacy\, the lecture offers fresh insight into the transnational experiences that shaped Lin Huiyin and Liang Sicheng’s careers\, their enduring intellectual legacy\, and the continuing relevance of their work for cross-cultural exchange and heritage preservation today. \nIn-Person Bilingual Lecture (English & Chinese)

SUMMARY:A Night at the Opera 闽剧之夜
DESCRIPTION:A special one-night only production of regional play\, Red Flower Princess 紅花公主 by Chinatown-based Min (Fujianese) opera group\, Sino-US Culture & Art Drama Theatre 中美文化戏剧院. \nRed Flower Princess 紅花公主 is a period comedy written by Fuzhounese director Hong Keren 洪可人 in the 80’s or early 90’s. The play follows the life of two cousins\, Miaozai (male) and Yehao (female) as they navigate cultural norm of 重男輕女\, or the preferential treatment for sons over daughters. Since its premiere\, this has become a classic piece for the Fuzhounese diaspora. \nThis production will feature the first 45 minutes of a nearly 3 hour play. Supertitles for the libretto will be provided in Chinese characters and translated into English. Backdrop artwork by Jia Sung. \nThis performance is part of Nights in Sara Roosevelt Park\, a free evening event series presented by FABnyc (Fourth Arts Block) held in “The Pit” at Sara D. Roosevelt Park in collaboration with other local groups. This performance is also a part of the 9th annual  month-long Chinatown Arts Festival presented by Think!Chinatown across Manhattan’s Chinatown.
