SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: "Defiant to the Last" Screening and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Lunch and Learn film screening and filmmaker discussion of Defiant to the Last: Resistance at Tule Lake\, which tells the story of the Tule Lake Segregation Center where dissident Japanese Americans were demonized and punished for speaking out against the false wartime incarceration. \nIn 1943\, Tule Lake was converted into the only maximum-security Segregation Center where the Army deployed a 1\,000 person battalion to oversee the imprisoned men\, women\, and young children. Tanks rolled in\, six guard towers were increased to 28\, and an eight-foot high double “man-proof” fence was constructed to prevent escape from this remote concentration camp located in the isolated northeastern corner of California. Tule Lake became a repressive\, high-security prison filled with the dissatisfied. \nFor over 80 years\, the iconic Tule Lake jail was a structure that remained a mystery. Why did the government build a jail inside the concentration camp? Piecing together government photos and reports\, a chilling story of human and civil rights violations at the Tule Lake Segregation Center was revealed. Inmates were threatened and coerced into giving up birthright US citizenship\, separated from their families\, and removed to Department of Justice camps in Bismarck\, ND and Santa Fe\, NM. Thousands were deported for daring to protest and resist the unjust WWII incarceration. \nToday\, history is repeating. Once again\, the government is using repressive tactics to round up aliens and US citizens\, disregarding their constitutional rights and due process\, and imprisoning them with the goal of deporting them. Defiant to the Last honors those who challenged injustice and reminds us how fragile civil liberties can be\, in any era.

SUMMARY:National Dance Company of Korea: Mask Off
DESCRIPTION:Mask Off looks beyond the ornate costumes\, accessories\, and visual images typically associated with “tradition\,” and instead delves into the breath\, form\, and movement that lie at its core. Choreographer Lee Jae-hwa\, who has long explored the essence of “contemporary Korean dance\,“ draws inspiration from talchum (Korea’s traditional mask dance) to break away from fixed ideas of what is considered “Korean.“ Talchum is a traditional masked dance known for its satire of social issues and the ruling classes during the Joseon Dynasty. Performed outdoors for common people\, it features raw breathing\, exaggerated gestures\, and energetic physicality— elements that\, in many ways\, resonate more closely with street dance than with other traditional forms. Focusing on these dynamic qualities\, Lee reimagines the methodology of talchum as a contemporary language of movement that speaks directly to today’s audiences. The music is composed and performed by Park Da-ul\, a geomungo artist celebrated for redefining the instrument’s expressive possibilities with his bold and innovative sound. The charged synergy between the dancers creates an electrifying experience\, delivering a surge of energy that reverberates through the entire stage. \nSaturday\, October 31\, 2026 7:30 PM \nSunday\, November 1\, 2026 5:00 PM \nAdmission: FREE (Pre-registration is Required)

SUMMARY:Seat at the Table Screening and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Seat at the Table with filmmakers and special guests in person \nFollowed by a conversation with filmmakers and special guests \nDirs. Sarita Khurana and Yoav Attias. 2026\, 90 mins. U.S. DCP. Seat at the Table  chronicles the rise of South Asian Americans in U.S. politics\, tracing a remarkable journey from political disenfranchisement to an increasingly powerful presence in American civic life. The final lineup brings together acclaimed headliners\, rising stars\, and standout new voices who have been making audiences laugh across New York and the U.S. comedy scene. \nThe festival celebrates the full diversity of South Asia by featuring comedians from different countries\, cultures\, languages\, and comedic styles. From clean to edgy\, every show offers a unique experience. Held in the heart of New York City across multiple venues over several days\, the festival also includes after-parties every night\, with an opening night celebration featuring a live DJ and dance party. We keep ticket prices as affordable as possible so more people can experience the festival while ensuring comedians are fairly compensated. This is our stage\, our stories\, and our community. When you join us\, you’ll feel right at home.

SUMMARY:King of the Yees
DESCRIPTION:For nearly twenty years\, Larry Yee has been the heart and soul of the Yee Fung Toy Family Association\, a fraternal organization in San Francisco’s iconic Chinatown. But to his daughter Lauren\, a playwright living in New York\, the association is an obsolete relic of a vanishing world. When Larry suddenly disappears\, Lauren sets off on a wild quest to find him\, embarking on a surreal\, magical journey through the history and myths of her own lineage. KING OF THE YEES is a hilarious and heartfelt “kind of true” story by Signature resident artist Lauren Yee\, who turns her incisive comedic eye on what we inherit and what it means to truly be a Yee.  \n \nAbout the Playwright \n \nLAUREN YEE is proud to be a Signature Theatre resident playwright. She is an award-winning playwright\, screenwriter\, and librettist based in New York City. Prior to the pandemic\, Lauren was named by American Theatre as the second-most-produced playwright of that upcoming season. Recent plays include Cambodian Rock Band with music by Dengue Fever (South Coast Rep\, Oregon Shakespeare Festival\, La Jolla Playhouse\, Signature Theatre\, East West Players)\, The Great Leap (Denver Center\, Seattle Rep\, Atlantic Theatre\, Steppenwolf\, American Conservatory Theatre)\, King of the Yees (Goodman Theatre\, Center Theatre Group)\, and Mother Russia (Seattle Rep\, Signature Theatre\, upcoming at Hampstead Theatre\, South Coast Rep\, Trinity Rep). She is writing the book for the musical adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time\, with music and lyrics by Heather Christian. Honors include the Doris Duke Artists Award\, Whiting Award\, Steinberg/ATCA Award\, American Academy of Arts and Letters literature award\, Horton Foote Prize\, Kesselring Prize\, Primus Prize\, a Hodder Fellowship at Princeton\, and the #1 and #2 plays on the 2017 Kilroys List. TV: ”Pachinko” (Apple)\, “Soundtrack” (Netflix)\, “Interior Chinatown” (Hulu)\, “Billions” (Showtime)\, “Clipped” (FX). She’s previously developed pilots for Netflix and Apple and is currently developing TV and feature projects for Netflix and Universal. BA: Yale\, MFA: UCSD. laurenyee.com
